Ari Seth Cohen The creator of Advanced Style, a street style blog documenting, in his words, the “fashion and wisdom of the senior set.” Cohen’s blog was made into a best-selling book, also titled ‘Advanced Style.’ Cohen’s grandmothers were his best friends growing up; as a result, Cohen “noticed a lack of older people in fashion campaigns and street style sites.” One of the Cohen’s grandmothers, who attended graduate school at Columbia University, told the young Cohen to move to New York if he wanted to be creative. The blogger duly began his photographic career when he moved into New York City in 2008, “as a way to better connect with older people.” Cohen is passionate about his subjects and society’s treatment of older people. He has spoken at a conference on abuse of the elderly, attending with one of his subjects. “I think that people neglect, forget, or ignore older people and don’t realize their worth. They don’t realize that they still want to be heard and that they still have a lot to offer.”
The Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami (CCBM) was founded in 2006 by Pedro Pablo Pena, Director of the International Ballet Festival of Miami, recognized as one of the most important festivals of its kind in the United States. CCBM is solely dedicated to performing and preserving the classical ballet repertoire as exemplified by the Cuban ballet tradition. CCBM is also the only professional ballet company in Miami that produces classical ballet works exclusively. Famous for its artistic virtuosity and technical brilliance, the Cuban Ballet School has trained some of the most well-known dancers of today and the late 20th century, and has created a technique that is unmatched in modern day classical ballet. One of CCBM’s goals is to establish a permanent classical ballet company and school that will preserve and further the tradition of the Cuban Classical School of ballet outside of Cuba, creating performance and teaching opportunities for the exiled members of this school in Miami and elsewhere for years to come.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES For the past three years, Outre has been trying to get the rights to perform the musical you are about to see tonight. Once every month or so, I would contact the rightsholders, and every time I was told that the rights were not available. But I kept calling. Because the story is important to tell. Especially now. Finally, last April, we secured the rights. As soon as I got the confirmation, I called Mike Westrich to ask him to play Hedwig. I knew that there could be no one else to play this very, very important role. According to Human Rights Watch, 2017 saw the number of murders of transgender people in the United States reach an all-time high. We are now on track for 2018 to exceed that number. Hedwig and the Angry Inch opened Off-Broadway twenty years ago. According to an article in Playbill magazine, “A lot of people were turned off,” book writer and original star John Cameron Mitchell remembers. “Audiences thought it was too loud, and asked, ‘What’s with the drag?’” Now, twenty years later, the conversation about transgendered and queer individuals has come out of the shadows. And it’s about time. As Mitchell said of his musical, the conversation itself needs to be loud. It’s been quiet for much too long. Hedwig is funny, brash, poignant, and offensive. It’s confrontational and persuasive. Even twenty years after its 1998 debut, it reminds us that while we have come so far, we still have so far to go.
