The Story of The Nutcracker Ballet Act I Scene 1 Christmas Eve at Stahlbaum’s Home It is Christmas Eve at Herr and Frau Stahlbaum’s home. Family and friends have gathered in the parlor to decorate the beautiful Christmas tree in preparation for the night’s festivities. Once the tree is finished, the younger children are sent for; among them are Clara, the Stahlbaum’s young daughter, and her brother Fritz. The party begins. A march is played on the piano. Presents are given out to the children. Suddenly, as the clockstrikes nine, a mysterious figure enters the room. It is Herr Drosselmeyer, a local councilman and Clara’s godfather. He is also a talented toymaker who has brought with him gifts for the children, including four lifelike dolls -- a Harlequin and Columbine, and a Vivandière and Soldier -- who dance to the delight of all. Herr Stahlbaum has the precious dolls put away for safekeeping. Clara and Fritz are sad to see the dolls taken away, but Herr Drosselmeyer has yet another toy for Clara: a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man, used for cracking hazelnuts. Clara is delighted and immediately takes a liking to it. Fritz, who did not get another present, tries to take the nutcracker doll away from Clara and breaks it. Clara is heartbroken. Herr Drosselmeyer fixes the Nutcracker and Clara takes the wounded toy to her doll’s bed, lulling it to sleep. The boys interrupt with their toy trumpets and horns. Herr and Frau Stahlbaum announce it is time to finish off the evening with a traditional dance. After the dance, the guests depart, and the children are sent off to bed. During the night, after everyone else has gone to bed, Clara returns to the parlor to check on her beloved nutcracker. As she reaches the little bed, the clock strikes midnight and she looks up to see her Godfather Drosselmeyer. Suddenly, mice begin to fill the room and Clara realizes she is shrinking as the Christmas tree seems to grow to dizzying heights. Clara finds herself in the midst of a battle between an army of soldiers and the mice, led by the Mouse King. The Nutcracker appears to lead the soldiers. As the Mouse King advances on the Nutcracker, Clara hits the Mouse King on the head with her slipper, and the Nutcracker kills him.
Scene 2 Land of Snow The mice retreat and the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. He leads Clara through the moonlit night to the Land of Snow in which the snowflakes dance around them.
Act II Scene 1 The Palace of Sweets Clara and the Prince travel to the Palace of Sweets. The Prince recounts for the Sugar Plum Fairy how he had been saved by Clara from the Mouse King and had been transformed back into a Prince. In honor of the young heroine, a celebration of sweets from around the world is produced: Chocolate from Spain, Coffee from Arabia, and Tea from China all dance for their amusement; Candy Canes from Russia perform an intricate hoop dance; Danish Marzipan Shepherdesses perform on their flutes; the Polichinelle children dance to a beautiful music; a string of beautiful flowers perform a waltz. To conclude the night, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier perform a Pas de Deux. A final waltz is performed by all the sweets after which Clara is crowned as the ruler of the Land of the Sweets. At the end Clara is asleep and wakes up next to her beloved nutcracker doll to find out the battle and the trips to the Land of the Snow and the Land of the Sweets were part of a dream.

an exploration of lineal descent from ancestor; ancestry or extraction In Celebration of African American Heritage Month in February, “afrique” spotlights artists from Africa, Haiti and Jamaica.
audience with artist: thursday, jan 11 | 7pm jan 2 thru feb 18
Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable sources of life and inspiration. Afrique takes a look at the community that embodies the city’s unique identity by celebrating the pillars of our community who have made it their life’s work to bring attention to the injustices in the world.
Afrique is a journey to discover the ancestors that came before these community leaders, their ancestry that made them these prolific community figures. In an increasingly socially connected and (virtually) borderless world, we can no longer make assumptions about what it means to be from a specific place – cultural identity is becoming increasingly complex and flexible. The Global Neighborhood trend is about embracing the state of flux, as our collective cultural identities will be less about where we are and more about what we believe. Are we in fear of loosing our true heritage?

A Civil War Christmas An American Musical Celebration
Friday Dec. 15 • Saturday Dec. 16 Friday Dec. 22 •Saturday Dec. 23
ABOUT THE PLAY Set on a chilly Christmas Eve in 1864 during the latter days of the Civil War. Washington, D.C. is settling down to the coldest Christmas Eve in years. In the White House, President and Mrs. Lincoln plot their gift- giving. On the banks of the Potomac, a young rebel challenges a Union blacksmith’s mercy. In the alleys downtown, an escaped slave loses her daughter just before finding freedom. “A Civil War Christmas” (known as the American version of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol”) weaves a tapestry of fictional and historical characters, such as President and Mrs. Lincoln – together with holiday music, marches, hymns, and spirituals of the period – to tell a story of companionship and communal hope arising from one of our nation’s darkest hours. “A Civil War Christmas” is a delight for people of all ages and contains many of the classic Christmas songs that we all know and love such as “Silent Night,” “ I Heard the Bells,” “What Child is This?,” “ God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and “O Christmas Tree.” The production premiered in 2008 at the Long Wharf Theater in New Haven, Connecticut and has been produced at a host of regional theaters across the U.S. since its debut. 16 | ccpompano.org
