District 181 Band & Orchestra Classes

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience private lessons with your band or orchestra instrument this summer! Classes are taught by professional musicians carefully screened by our District 181 instrumental music staff, specializing in each of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass. Class Number: M1 Instructor:: Professional musicians screened by D181 staff Date/Time:: Lessons are held between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be four lessons, one per week, each 30 minutes. The student’s schedule will be determined by the private instructor and parent. Instructors will contact parents in regard to date and time preferences after registration is complete. Grade: 4-8 (Current D181 Students Only) Location: Clarendon Hills Middle School Cost: $100 Refund & Make-Up Policy:: A refund can only be given if the teacher is unable to accommodate a specific time request for an entire series of lessons. With advance notice, teachers will make up one lesson. If a student needs to miss more than one lesson, please make arrangements outside of the school series. Broadway Bound 2014

Join us for a week of singing, dancing and staging some of Broadway’s favorite moments. Students will learn large production numbers and have the chance to be featured in a special way, as well. The week will culminate with a performance for our adoring fans (a.k.a. parents). This opportunity is open to all D181 students in Grades 4-8 (2013-14 school year). Closings/Cancelations: Classes close once a maximum enrollment is reached. Classes will be canceled if a minimum enrollment is not reached. Action Reading: Ready-Set-Grow!

(For students who have completed kindergarten) Jump in with both feet to learn more about reading and writing. Enjoy a fun-filled hour of hands-on activities that will help reinforce literacy skills in reading and writing. Students will have an opportunity to research and explore a specific topic and present it to their peers in a unique and interesting way!

Science and Math is for Everyone! Ready-Set-Explode!

Everyone get active! Physical activity is a tool that helps ready the learner for all core courses. Students will participate in a variety of high energy, cooperative activities that will foster skill development and fitness.

Students will read real-life graphic novels designed to capture their attention and hold their interest. Reading strategies will be taught through nonfiction text. Students will also explore engaging extension activities. Learn a skill that will help you everyday. The more quickly and accurately you can type, the easier your homework projects will become. All skill levels invited! This class is for students at all experience levels. Students who have little or no experience playing guitar will learn to strum, pick, and play melodies. Basic guitar skills and note reading will be taught. Older students who have no guitar experience or who have a little guitar experience and want to develop their skills can cover more material at a faster pace. District-owned instruments can be provided and kept at the school. Students who have their own instrument are invited to use them. This class will focus on landscape, still life, portraits, and abstract painting. Parents and students will be invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class! Students will work with Paper Mache to create a number of sculptures and three-dimensional artwork; they will finish by painting their sculptures with Tempera paint. Half the class will be dedicated to creating artwork on paper using watercolor, pastels, and collage materials. The second half will focus on creating artwork using a variety of applications on the iPad. Students will also create digital artwork for publication in Hinsdale’s Storybook Village. In December, the artwork will be displayed in Hinsdale store windows. Parents and students are invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class! In this course, students will engage in active, close-reading of a wide variety of literature and nonfiction. Students will stretch and grow as readers while reading complex text at deeper levels, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to read like a detective. Overall, students will learn how to slow down, re-read, and critically think about what they are reading. Students will need a journal, folder, and sticky notes. Time to get geared up for middle school! Students will learn and practice skills in organization, listening, following directions, and the dreaded locker combination while simulating a typical routine of a middle school class. Students will read real-life graphic novels designed to capture their attention and hold their interest. Reading strategies will be taught through nonfiction text. Students will also explore engaging extension activities. Did you pack everything in your backpack? Why does it seem like you never have homework? Did you study for your test? Do these questions sound familiar? Executive FUNctioning will lay a foundation to prepare your middle school student for success. Students will discover their individual learning styles, develop skills for managing a heavier academic schedule, and learn how to create the optimal learning environment. The Rush Neurobehavioral Center Executive Function Skills Program will be incorporated into the course. Students will need a binder and dividers.

Students will learn the basics of technology used in school, including computers, iPads and the features available with the student Google accounts. They will also explore programs and apps, such as Comic Life, Keynote, iMovie, and iBooks. These exciting programs can be used to make assignments and projects more creative and engaging. We will also examine apps that can be used for studying and organization. Proven techniques for getting organized, strategies for studying, and so much more are in store for the student who signs up for Everything Study Skills. Using an assignment book, taking notes, preparing note cards, preparing study guides, outlining, and webbing are just some of what we’re going to cover in this class. We are also going to learn testtaking strategies, memorization techniques, textbook reading strategies and listening skills. Students will learn what type of learner they are and in which of the seven intelligences they have strengths. Reading is an important component of being successful in school. Students will learn strategies to be better readers. We will read several types of literature: short stories, newspaper/ magazine articles, essays and nonfiction selections. There will be ten minutes daily for independent reading. We will also talk about how to increase reading speed! If reading has been a challenge for your student, or if the student just doesn’t like to read, this class can make a difference. This class is for all levels of writers, including students seeking improvement, students who love to write, and students who find writing a chore. There are lots of writing activities in store: creating a magazine, writing letters to famous people and/ or writing to companies, making a children’s book, creative writing activities and much more! The course will also include instruction on using descriptive language, spicing up writing with phrases and clauses, and varying sentence structure. In this course, students will engage in active, close-reading of a wide a variety of literature and nonfiction. The course will be discussion-based with students reading closely, thinking critically, and engaging deeply with their own ideas. Students will need a journal, folder, and sticky notes. This course will engage students in a historical inquiry. Each lesson will revolve around a central historical question and feature sets of primary documents. Students will investigate historical questions by utilizing close reading strategies. Instead of memorizing historical facts, students will evaluate the trustworthiness of multiple perspectives in historical issues. Additionally, they will learn to make historical claims backed by text evidence. Students will need a journal, folder, and sticky notes.

Students in this program will receive concrete instruction that will help develop a solid understanding of abstract number concepts. The content will vary according to grade level, but the basic approach will have a similar look. Students will: • Receive instruction at their individual achievement levels. • Develop a strong number sense and basic skills to become more effective problem solvers. • Use manipulatives and games to reinforce learning. • Use software as an additional learning tool. • Enter the new school year with greater confidence in their mathematical abilities.
