District 181 Band & Orchestra Classes

Take advantage of this opportunity to experience private lessons with your band or orchestra instrument this summer! Classes are taught by professional musicians carefully screened by our District 181 instrumental music staff, specializing in each of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass. Class Number: M1 Instructor: Professional musicians screened by D181 staff Date/Time: Lessons are scheduled between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students will receive four lessons, one per week, each 30 minutes. The student’s schedule will be determined by the private instructor and parent. Instructors will contact parents in regard to date and time preferences after registration is complete. Grade: 4-8 (Current D181 Students Only) Location: Clarendon Hills Middle School Cost: $100 Refund & Make-Up Policy: A refund can only be given if the teacher is unable to accommodate a specific time request for an entire series of lessons. With advance notice, teachers will make up one lesson. If a student needs to miss more than one lesson, please make arrangements with the instructor. Students are not considered registered for the Summer Learning Program until class payment is received in full. Cost: The cost is $175 per class with the exception of: Band & Orchestra ($100 per four lessons); Advanced Learning ELA: 6th Grade ($350 per two-hour class); Advanced Learning Math Algebra I ($350 per two-hour class) and Early Childhood Summer Camp for preschoolers ($525 per three-hour class). Closings/Cancelations: Classes close once a maximum enrollment is reached. Classes will be canceled if a minimum enrollment is not reached. Drawing / Printmaking on Paper & iPads

Half of this class will be dedicated to creating artwork on paper using watercolor, pastels, collage materials and forms of printmaking. The​​second half will focus on creating artwork using a variety of​​applications on the iPad. Parents and students are invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class!

This integrative teaching approach will engage students in creative art projects based on children’s literature. Students will conclude the session by creating their own version of a children’s book. Parents will be invited to an open house on the last day to view the projects. This class will focus on landscape, still life, portraits, and abstract painting. Students will work on life skills such as planning, problem-solving and critical thinking. Students will learn about different artists, styles, and techniques of painting! Parents and students will be invited to an​​​art ​show and reception on the last day of class!

Sculpture

This class will focus on multiple forms of sculpture. Students will work with a variety of three-dimensional materials from paper mache to clay, to recycled objects. Parents and students are invited to an art show and reception on the last day of class!

This reading class will introduce students to delightful and humorous mysteries that not only teach important skills, but also help children realize what fun reading can be. Students will stretch and grow as readers while reading complex text at deeper levels, allowing them to develop the skills necessary to read like a detective. This class will help students to read and talk about stories, expand their vocabulary, and develop their writing skills. Exciting news broadcasts will allow readers to have a multisensory experience. Children will listen to broadcasts and become familiar with the vocabulary and content before reading various news selections. This class will allow students to engage in a complete literary experience. Stories about adventures, mysteries, ghosts, mythical creatures, and amazing true stories will definitely capture the attention of all readers. The diversity of reading activities will have all students wanting to know, ‘What’s Trending?’ Read, write, and discuss a variety of poems, stories, and essays. Connect writing with art to deepen your understanding of both.

This class is for students at all experience levels. Students who have little or no experience playing guitar will learn to strum, pick, and play melodies. Basic guitar skills and note reading will be taught. District-owned instruments can be provided and kept at the school. Students who have their own instrument are invited to use them.

Students will explore a variety of cooking and baking recipes. During each class, students will learn about well-paired foods and create a delicious cuisine. On our final class, parents will be invited to sample some of our meals and treats. This keyboarding course teaches students to type while reinforcing spelling, grammar, composition, and punctuation skills.

This course will introduce students to useful tech tools to help them in their middle school classes. Students will learn organization strategies, tools for studying, and engaging methods to demonstrate their knowledge of classroom assignments. Speak up! Be more confident when you are speaking and improve your writing, too! Also, students will collaborate with a team to research and debate a topic. This course curriculum will address motivation, effort, overcoming obstacles in positive ways, and providing a rationale for trying your best.
