BIRD’S NEST DESIGN STUDIO // DECEMBER 2014 // PHILIP BEESLEY GROUP INSTALLATION

Elements of plywood, acrylic, and mylar compose a mechanically joined modular system with the potential for expansion. The environment that results is sheltered, yet completely perforated, static, yet seemingly hovering in mid-air. My major contribution to the installation is the design and fabrication of the “spine” - the central piece to which all other components are attached. Inspired by backbone of a whale, each “vertebrae” is a module designed to carry load, while maintaining enough flexibility and tolerance within itself and the overall system.

JITTERBUG DESIGN STUDIO // OCTOBER 2014 // PHILIP BEESLEY INSTALLATION This installation is an investigation of form inspired by natural structures found in nature and informed by the inherent structural properties of acrylic and mylar. A lightweight, airy scaffold of hexagonal modules supports three Jitterbugs, inspired by Buckminster Fuller. An integrated lever system controls movement, allowing the Jitterbugs to lyrically twirl open in welcome and softly retract into its dormant state.

SYNTHESIS DESIGN STUDIO // NOVEMBER 2014 // PHILIP BEESLEY KINETIC MESH INVESTIGATION

Twelve rods of bamboo from recycled blinds weave together in 3 dimensions, composing a module with a self sufficient central joint in which the rods are capable of sliding past one another. Each module is then connected to another via silicone tubing. The result is a flexible mesh of modular bamboo components, with the ability to warp in form. In this way, the mesh becomes a tectonic element with a multitude of applications - a wall, floor, canopy, or in any combination. The mechanical connections between each module also allow modification for attachments, providing the potential to create separate interior and exterior environments.

MIDWAY DESIGN STUDIO // MARCH 2014 // PHILIP BEESLEY TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA

On an urban scale, this mixed-use complex integrates itself at the edge of two urban conditions, expanding the range of services for the residential community in which it is a part of, while simultaneously activating downtown Toronto’s commercial nature. On the scale of the complex itself, two towers absorb the contrasting characteristics of their surroundings, merging at a central place of repose that juxtaposes and gives balance to the entire system.

PIAZZA MARANA DESIGN STUDIO // NOVEMBER 2015 // LORENZO PIGNATTI ROME, ITALY PARTNER: ANQI ZHANG

In a simple gesture to recall the memory of the Aqua Marana that once flowed through this site, the project utilizes the image of a river pooling into a pond, grounded by three monumental stones. Following the natural axiality created by site conditions, circulation is guided towards the destination - a museum of ancient Roman baths. Bars of program along the piazza activate the surfaces and separate the space into three zones street market, commercial, and garden; these spaces converge behind the museum at a secondary public space, integrating the project within the urban fabric. My major focus was on detailing the museum. Form is governed by ground site conditions, internal program, and sunlight qualities, negotiating with spirals of circulation in the vertical axis, serving to emphasize the spatial experience.

CREATIVE CONFERENCE INTERNSHIP // APRIL 2015 // GENSLER SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA

During my internship at Gensler, I designed, sourced materials, and composed construction drawings for a multi-functional conference room at Adobe’s headquarters. Reminiscent of a garage workshop, the design is based on customizable elements that create a playful and intimate atmosphere, dispelling the austere stigma associated with an ordinary conference room, and serving to encourage interaction. It was noted by the client that since its opening, the room has become a popular destination with employees and is being used constantly.
