July 6, 2013 To Whom It May Concern: I had the pleasure of having Jiaxin (Cecylia) Yan as an architectural intern at my firm from January to April 2013. Despite only being in the second year of her studies, Cecylia displayed exceptional performance during her internship. She is diligent, dependable, a fast learner and a great team player who is eager to learn and expresses interest in her work. Cecylia works extremely well in a team setting. Our firm takes on a variety of projects, requiring very high collaborative and adaptability skills. Cecylia was consistently cooperative and dedicated in the multiple project teams she participated in. She fully takes on her role as a member of the team. In addition, she puts the team success as her success and readily adjusts to changing priorities based on the project circumstance. During project crunch times, she would voluntarily offer extra time and effort to help her team complete remaining tasks. Cecylia is keen to learn and face challenges. She contributed to five major projects: the Chongqing Greenland Clubhouse, Shenzhen Universiade Software Town, Jinshan Community for the Elderly, Chengdu Greenland Mixed-Use Façade, and Daocheng Yading Tourism. Her tasks included preliminary design and site research, concept proposals, 3D modeling, construction drawings, project publication diagrams and Chinese to English translations. Her exposure to software included Google Sketchup, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and AutoCAD. Where she lacked knowledge or skills, Cecylia proactively sought the opinion and expertise of her co-workers. She is an excellent listener and follows through on the feedback given to her. She is fully able to play a support role within projects. With her enthusiastic attitude and continuous improvement, I believe Cecylia will continue to develop towards a bright future in this field. Sincerely, ---------------------------------Guoping Shi, RA, LEED AP Partner

ENSEMBLE RESIDENCES CAMBR I D GE, O NTAR I O 2 A DESI GN STUDI O ADR I AN BL ACKW EL L DEC 2 0 1 2
Ensemble aims to build relationships between its inhabitants and with the larger community. In the fast-paced and rapidly changing society today, two demographics that are highly susceptible to negative impact are single parent families and seniors. However, their differing troubles bring up the possibility of collaboration to achieve mutual emotional and physical support.

The building design reflects this notion of unity through its circular form, circulation, and program. Common areas on the residential floors are purposed for different communal activities, encouraging a crossmixing of residents, while the ground floor public program facilitates social interaction with the rest of the Cambridge community.

Prefabricated structural elements are assembled together to form an exoskeletal frame, leaving the ceiling, floor, and walls to be customized according to the function of the space. The project was originally envisioned as an emergency shelter in response to an earthquake in the Philippines. However, the ‘panel’ concept offers potential development of the shelter into more permanent architecture.

HOUSE FOR AN ARTIST CAMBR I D GE, O NTAR I O 1 A DESI GN STUDI O VI CTO R I A BELTR ANO & TR ACEY W I NTO N DEC 2 0 1 1
This residential house is designed as a permanent living and working space for an ink-wash bamboo painter and collector. The design embraces two concepts: connection of the interior with the exterior and functionality - the house itself promoting inspiration in the artist. Materiality, form, and program establish axes which in turn direct circulation, inciting spatial experiences that reflect the design concepts.

False Bridge is a pavillion built as a scenic lookout area; a public resting space for one to enjoy the beautiful skyline of Vancouver’s Fraser Valley and river. Following the 2012 SSEF (Steel Structures Education Foundation) competition theme, recycling, the pavillion proposes a second life for the Pattullo Bridge - a structure slated to be demolished in the near future. It reuses the entirety of the Pattullo bridge, from the site to the steel connections.
