The Gem State taxes all income, except Social Security and Railroad Retirement Benefits. Its top tax rate of 7.4% applies to taxable income of $21,136 and above, seniors get a retirement benefits deduction. Your primary residence is eligible for an exemption of up to 50% of assessed value. Idaho does not have an inheritance tax or estate tax. Idaho’s sales tax rate is 6%.

If you love the outdoors, Coeur d’Alene is a vast outdoor playground. Referred to by locals as the Lake City, Coeur d’Alene has more than 55 lakes within easy driving distance of town, as well as 150 miles of biking and walking trails. Lake Coeur d’Alene is one of the most beautiful natural alpine lakes in the world. The downtown core is small and quaint, yet there’s a Costco. There are numerous festivals that attract tourists, but also a solid year-round community with civic organizations and plenty of ways to volunteer.

For those who love to golf and fish, it's the best of both worlds. The area is known for its excellent golf courses, including the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course, home to the world-famous floating green and the Circling Raven Golf Course, a par 72 course that spans 620 acres that land on a number of top 100 courses lists.
