Dear Friends, Welcome to the 34th Carousel of Hope Ball. This is a very special evening because for the first time the Carousel Ball is going virtual. We will be seen around the world thanks to our partnering with People.com and I am so happy to welcome so many old friends and new friends. Tonight is also very special as we are celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes and my 90th Birthday. The theme of tonight is from a song written by my dear friend Carole Bayer Sager and Burt Bacharach called “That’s What Friends Are For”, everyone who has donated their time and talent to join in the festivities are dear friends. This has been such a different year for everyone and our lives have dramatically changed, but one thing will always remain, is the importance and love of friends in our lives. We are celebrating the research and advancements we have made for type 1 diabetes which has improved greatly over the past 40 years. Although this year we have been concentrating more on care rather than research, as the coronavirus has made a drastic increase in patients needing our help. Your presence here tonight helps wonderful doctors and researchers who are striving to find a cure for diabetes and I thank you so much for your support. These efforts will help the 30 million people in America living with diabetes and the 415 million who are battling this disease all around the world. We have come a long way since we opened the Barbara Davis Center forty years ago and we won’t stop fighting until there is a cure. To my very, very special friend, David Foster - I can’t thank you enough for being here with me for so many years and for giving your talent, not only as a performer, but also as the music director. My thanks to you comes truly from the bottom of my heart. I truly love you David. Thank you. To my dear, dear friend Clive Davis - who knows music better than anyone. The disease has doubled over the last twenty years and is projected to double yet again by 2030. Marvin and I began this effort over forty years ago when our daughter Dana was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Our dream was to build a clinic with the most advanced ways to treat diabetes, prevent complications, and do

research. Today, the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has become one of the leading centers for diabetes in the world. The Barbara Davis Center treats thousands of patients from across the nation and around the world regardless of their ability to pay. 35% of our patients are at or below poverty level and 40% are uninsured or underinsured. We welcome everyone with open arms. We are just so grateful for all of you tonight who have joined us in the fight to overcome a disease which leads to so many terrible complications. Children’s Diabetes Foundation (CC DF) The Children’s Diabetes Foundation was established by Barbara and Marvin Davis in 1977 in Denver as a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the support of research in diabetes and to provide the best possible clinical and educational programs for people with the disease. The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, where thousands of patients of all ages from all over the world receive the finest diabetes care available.

C – Barbara Davis Center (BDC) Celebrating 40 Years of Excellent Care! The Barbara Davis Center’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art care to children and adults with type 1 diabetes and to teach their patients how to prevent or delay complications. Their research is devoted to finding prevention, cure and most effectively treatment of diabetes and associated disorders. The CDF’s philanthropic efforts enabled the construction of the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes (BDC) in Denver, which opened its doors in 1980. In 2005, BDC moved to a modern facility with 120,000 square feet of clinics and laboratories. Initially, the Center was helping 100 children with diabetes. Today, BDC is one of the largest diabetes institutes in the world, proudly serving more than 4,000 children and 3,000 adults with type 1 diabetes. In the past 40 years, the CDF’s support of $110 million has kept the BDC at the forefront of innovation in the rapidly changing field of diabetes research and care. By investing in the BDC’s skilled faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and widely respected programs, CDF has opened up a world of opportunity for thousands of patients and families in need of life-changing care. The BDC’s Center of excellence has expanded care to adults (1991) with type 1 diabetes, including pregnant women, diabetes eye care (1996), and telemedicine (2012). 5

ony Bennett’s life and philosophy is the embodiment of the Great American Story. Having celebrated his 93rdth birthday in 2019, his career as the pre-eminent singer of the 20th and 21st centuries is unprecedented. He continues to be embraced and loved by audiences of all generations. Tony Bennett has received 19 Grammy Awards including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, 2 Emmy Awards and is a Kennedy Center Honoree and NEA Jazz Master. In 2017, he became the first interpretive singer to be honored by the Library of Congress receiving The Gershwin Prize. Tony Bennett is one of a handful of artists to have new albums charting in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and now in the first two decades of the 21st century. He has introduced a multitude of songs into the Great American Songbook that have since become standards for pop music. In the new millennium, Bennett’s artistry and popularity was higher than ever and he has sold over 10 million albums in the last 10 years alone. ecognized around the world as an icon of the greatest Italian vocal tradition, to date Andrea Bocelli has sold over 90 million records. He improved his singing skills under the guidance of his mentor, Franco Corelli, and initially became widely famous for winning the Sanremo Music Festival in 1994. At the same time, he started his dazzling classical career, performing masterpieces from the opera repertoire on stage – conducted by Lorin Maazel, Seiji Ozawa and Zubin Mehta. Cynthia Erivo C
ynthia Erivo is a Tony, Emmy and Grammy Award-winning actress, as well as Academy Award, Golden Globe, and SAG nominee. Erivo burst onto West End and Broadway stages in “The Color Purple,” and has since taken the big screen by storm. Erivo recently starred in Kasi Lemmons’ “Harriet” where she brought the legacy of Harriet Tubman to the big screen. Focus Features premiered the film at the Toronto International Film Festival and released the film in theaters on November 1, 2019. Erivo’s performance was met with critical acclaim, garnering two Academy Award nominations, Golden Globe, SAG and multiple NAACP Award nominations as well as AAFCA and Society of Composers & Lyricists Award wins. Erivo can soon be seen as Aretha Franklin in National Geographic’s Emmy-winning global anthology series “Genius: Aretha.” This upcoming season will be the first-ever, definitive and only authorized scripted limited series on the life of the universally acclaimed Queen of Soul. The series is set for a Fall 2020 premiere on National Geographic channels in 172 countries and in 43 languages. In 2020, Erivo launched her production company, Edith’s Daughter, and announced her first-look deal with MRC Television & Civic Center Media. ossessing one of the most outstanding and instantly recognizable voices in music, Grammy, Tony, and Emmy Award-nominated singer, songwriter, and actor Josh Groban has entertained fans across the globe with his multi-platinum albums (over 35 million sold worldwide), electrifying live performances, and comedic film and television appearances. Groban has appeared feature films such as Crazy, Stupid, Love, The Hollars, Coffee Town, and Muppets Most Wanted, as well as on NBC’s The Office, FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and CBS’ The Crazy Ones. In 2017, he concluded his Broadway run in Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which Time Out New York called, “one of the best musicals of the decade”. he great ones endure, and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last sixty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary, and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Knight’s devoted fans have continued to flock to her national and international stages, singing along to her classics and current songs such as her 2014 dance single, “Just A Little.” The song marked Knight’s first mainstream dance single in nearly twenty years. Knight, who is a two-time Grammy winner in the gospel category, yet again embraced her gospel roots, releasing her inspirational album “Where My Heart Belongs”, in September 2014. The album was a major success and won an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Gospel Album.” All told, Knight has recorded more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: “Good Woman” (1991); “Just for You” (1994); the inspirational “Many Different Roads” (1999); and “At Last” (2001). “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. fter blowing everyone away on the eighth season of American Idol, Adam Lambert went on to release his debut album ‘For Your Entertainment’ which included the international hit ‘Whatya Want From Me’ and earned him a Grammy Award nomination. Adam followed this success with his second album ‘Trespassing’ which became the first album to reach the number one spot in the US and Canada by an openly gay artist. His highly anticipated third album ‘The Original High’ was his first for Warner Bros Records which was executive produced by Max Martin and Shellback and included the smash hit ‘Ghost Town’.
Adam joined the cast of Glee for a six-episode story in 2013 and performed the role of Eddie in Fox’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He went on to judge on The X Factor Australia where his artist, Isaiah, won the show. Adam has been touring as the lead singer of Queen (Queen + Adam Lambert) since 2012, including two huge world arena tours which sold out in minutes and gained critical acclaim. ionne Warwick’s 50 plus year career has earned more than 60 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records. Launching a professional singing career in 1961 led her to be discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Together they went on to make music history and racked up more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together. Warwick received her first Grammy Award in 1968 for her mega-hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and a second Grammy in 1970 for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” She became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance. In 1970, Warwick received her second Grammy Award for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” and began her second decade of hits. In 1974, she hit the top of the charts with “Then Came You,” a million-selling duet with The Spinners. In 1976, Warwick signed with Arista Records, beginning a third decade of hit-making. In 1985, she reunited with composer Burt Bacharach and longtime friends Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder to record “That’s What Friends Are For,” which became a number one hit record around the world and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness and major funds for the AIDS cause in support of AMFAR. Warwick to this day continues to support along with various other charities. Warwick was recently inducted into the GRAMMY MUSEUM in Los Angeles where a special 50th Anniversary exhibit was held in the Clive Davis Theater, hosted by Clive Davis, Burt Bacharach and Grammy Museum Executive Director, Bob Santelli.

s the record industry’s most innovative and influential executive, Clive Davis has had a profound effect on the world of music. In the first phase of his career, Davis was General Counsel of Columbia Records and was appointed Vice President and General Manager in 1966. In 1967 he was named President of the company and personally signed Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and The Holding Company to Columbia. After that, he was directly responsible for the signing of many more landmark artists in the rock field, among them Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Santana, Loggins & Messina, Laura Nyro, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire. In addition, he brought to the label such artists as Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, and The Isley Brothers. Under Davis’ leadership, Arista launched the careers of Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Kenny G and Sarah McLachlan. The label also attracted such important artists as Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Lou Reed, Eurythmics, Dionne Warwick, Hall & Oates, and Carly Simon. Davis founded Arista Nashville in 1988 and working with Nashville’s Tim Dubois, it quickly became the talk of the industry with the discovery of Alan Jackson, Brooks & Dunn and Brad Paisley. With over 150 major industry awards Arista Nashville set the pace for country music. Also, in 2000, Clive Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the only non-performer. Almost simultaneously, it was announced that he would be the recipient of the Trustees Lifetime Achievement award by NARAS at the Grammy Awards. In August 2000, Clive Davis began a new phase in his career, announcing the formation of J Records. The label quickly became the buzz of the industry, beginning with Alicia Keys whose debut album Songs In A Minor sold over 10 million copies and swept the Grammys. J Records emerged as a dominant music force with chart topping albums by Maroon 5, whose debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide, Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart (whose five Great American Songbook Volumes returned him to the top of the charts selling over 18 million copies worldwide with all five volumes being co-produced by Davis), Jennifer Hudson and Leona Lewis. In 2002, Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and Clive Davis, announced a $5 million gift by Davis to the School for the creation of a new Department of Recorded Music. The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music is the first of its kind to offer a four-year, degree-granting undergraduate program that recognizes the creative producer as an artist in his own right and musical recording itself as a creative medium. In the year 2008, Clive Davis was appointed Chief Creative Officer for all of Sony Music Entertainment, a change in operational responsibility but an expansion of the artists he would now creatively be responsible for. In the year 2010, NARAS named the prestigious state of the art theater inside the Grammy Museum the “Clive Davis Theater”. And in the year 2011, New York University awarded an Honorary PhD of Fine Arts to Clive Davis. Also in 2011, Davis made an additional gift of $5 million to the Tisch School, expanding the Department of Recorded Music into an Institute. In February 2013, Simon and Schuster published Davis’ autobiography The Soundtrack of My Life. It entered The New York Times’ Non-Fiction Best Seller list at #2 and remained in its top ten for nine consecutive weeks. The book was published as a paperback in November 2013. The Ridley Scott firm produced a widely, much praised film documentary on Davis’ life called:“Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives”. It opened the Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall on April 19, 2017 and won The Critics’ Choice Award and The Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best Documentary. It became a big best seller for two years on iTunes for Apple Music reaching #1 for five consecutive weeks and then premiered on Netflix in September, 2019 where it has gone viral all over the world. In January, 2019 Mr. Davis produced the Memorial Concert for Aretha Franklin that became a big television success for the CBS Television Network. And also in 2019, Davis began executive producing an 8 part television series produced by Brian Grazer for Disney on the life of Aretha Franklin. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Clive Davis was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of New York University (1953), where he received his B.A. magna cum laude and he graduated with honors from Harvard Law School (1956). He resides in Manhattan with two sons and a daughter residing in Manhattan and one son living in Los Angeles. 22

amed by Time Magazine as one of the six most influential Jazz artists of the 20th Century, Quincy Jones is an impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word. Over six-decades, Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, television station owner, magazine founder, multi-media entrepreneur and humanitarian. Among the multitude of awards that he has received for his contributions are an Emmy Award, seven Academy Award nominations, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, 27 Grammy Awards, and is the all-time most nominated Grammy artist with a total of 79 nominations. He is the recipient of the Republic of France’s Commandeur de la Legion d’ Honneur, and in 2001 he was inducted as a “Kennedy Center Honoree,” the United States’ most prestigious cultural award, for his lifetime contributions to the culture of the country. He was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master - the nation’s highest jazz honor, and in 2010 was bestowed the National Medal of Arts, our nation’s highest artistic honor. In 2016, Jones received a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical for the Broadway production of “The Color Purple. The award completed the rare EGOT set for Jones, an exclusive club of artists who have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. In 2001, Quincy Jones added the title “Best Selling Author” to his list of accomplishments when his autobiography “Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones” entered the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal Best-Sellers lists. Released by Doubleday Publishing, the critically acclaimed biography retells Jones’ life story from his days as an impoverished youth on the Southside of Chicago through a massively impressive career in music, film and television where he worked beside legends such as Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Jackson, among many others. In conjunction with the autobiography, Rhino Records released a 4-cd boxed set of Jones’ music, spanning his more than 5 decade career in the music business, entitled “Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones.” In 2008, he released the coffee-table book “The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey and Passions.”
In 2010 Jones released his latest record Soul Bossa Nostra, an album featuring some of the day’s biggest recording artists and producers such as Usher, Ludacris, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. eorge Schlatter is a veteran of over 50 years in network television. Throughout his long and successful career as a producer, director and writer, George Schlatter has been responsible for hundreds of hours of television series and specials. He changed the face of television when he created and produced such breakthrough series as LAUGH-IN and REAL PEOPLE. Over the years, Mr. Schlatter has received numerous honors and awards including 25 Emmy Award nominations, five Emmys, three Image Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Television Critics Awards, the International Radio & Television “Man of the Year” Award, Directors Guild Award, Producers Guild “Man of the Year” Award, as well as many others. When the Television Academy celebrated its 15th Anniversary, they honored him for his outstanding contribution to television. In 1989, he was awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. In 1992 Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra, on behalf of the Scott Newman Center, honored him with a tribute dinner for his showmanship and involvement to so many charitable causes. In 1995, the Museum of Television & Radio did a special tribute to him for his contributions in the world of television. He was also honored by his alma mater, Pepperdine University, with a three-hour gala at the Saban Theater hosted by many of the stars with whom he has worked over the past 50 years. In 1987 he created and established the AMERICAN COMEDY AWARDS, which aired for 15 straight years as annual network televised events designed to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of comedic actors and performers. “Of all the work I’ve done, I am perhaps most proud of my involvement in the early careers of performers like Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, Roseanne, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Flip Wilson and others who have gone on to greater heights. Working with stars is rewarding, but helping to create stars is the most fulfilling of all accomplishments.” He produced the first 5 years of the Grammy Awards plus CBS television series with Cher and with Bill Cosby as well as “The Judy Garland Show” and all the way back to the “Dinah Shore Chevy Show” on NBC. He produced specials starring Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Eddie Murphy, Elton John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Michael Jackson, Doris Day, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, Placido Domingo, Nat King Cole and scores of others. Mr. Schlatter and Whoopi Goldberg co-produced a special based on the life of Moms Mabley which included interviews with Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Tommy Smothers, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Kathy Griffin and many others. He also has produced a “Laugh-In” reunion show for a PBS pledge drive, which was the most successful comedy special ever for PBS. In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of “Laugh-In,” George produced a special for Netflix called “Still Laugh-In: The Stars Celebrate.” His credits also include The American Film Institute Life Achievement Award Salutes to Dustin Hoffman and Harrison Ford, The 54th and 55th Presidential Inaugural Opening Ceremonies of George W. Bush and The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Inaugural Gala: Finding a Cure and Nancy Reagan: A Love Story. He has been working on a documentary dealing with Dr. William Rader and his successful use of Fetal Stem Cells in treating many debilitating diseases. For twenty years he has produced all of the Barbara Davis Carousel of Hope events, which created the Barbara Davis Children’s Diabetes Center in Denver. He is particularly proud of the work he did in helping Barbara Sinatra create her center for the treatment of sexually abused children at the Eisenhower hospital in Palm Springs. He is married to former actress Jolene Brand who was a regular on the Ernie Kovacs Show. They have two daughters, Andrea and Maria.

ctor, Singer, Writer, and Producer, Erich Bergen is best known as the trusty assistant Blake Moran on the hit television show Madam Secretary, which recently completed 6 seasons on CBS. Imagine a disease that occupies your thoughts all day long, without a break and requires hundreds of life-threatening or life-saving decisions a day – THIS IS TYPE 1 DIABETES Over 40 years ago, when the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center were created, diabetes looked like a completely different disease. Home blood testing didn’t exist, synthetic insulins were unheard of, and you had to boil syringes in water before injecting large needles. Today, we have artificial pancreases, continuous glucose monitors, a choice between insulin pumps or injections, and so many other exciting medications and therapies that make diabetes management fit into the patient’s life, not the other way around. The Barbara Davis Center is a huge contributor to these advancements as they continually work on cutting-edge technology and medications. But sadly, we haven’t reached the finish line. Diabetes requires constant management and the physical, emotional, and social stress that diabetes can cause is ever-present in a diabetic and their family’s lives. The Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center are fighting to improve patient lives every day by providing the best possible patient care, providing support groups, educating the public, and doing research to prevent diabetes, reduce its complications, and eventually find a cure.
The people who are affected by type 1 diabetes aren’t just patients. They are our heroes and we will help them every step of the way.

Diabetes Technology Research In the past few years, diabetes technology has made incredible strides and 2020 as created even more technology that will improve life for people with type 1 diabetes. The very first Artificial Pancreas (a system that combines an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor that aims to keep blood sugars in target range by automatically collecting insulin does) is now available for the masses, but multiple companies are now in the race with differing features that will improve diabetes care and lessen the burden of diabetes.
Artificial Pancreas The Barbara Davis Center clinical research teams are doing research on several Artificial Pancreas systems currently in development. This gives patients the unique opportunity to participate in these important studies and allows clinical researchers to provide feedback to the manufacturers to ensure that patients are receiving the absolute best technology. The research done at the Barbara Davis Center has contributed to information necessary for several approvals of Artificial Pancreas systems now commercially available in the United States.
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) A Continuous Glucose Monitor checks a patient’s sugar level every 5 minutes through a tiny sensor that stays on the body for several days. The device displays graphs to show how quickly blood sugar levels are rising or falling, and alarms when blood sugar levels are too high or low, a feature that is particularly helpful when the patient is sleeping. The device is truly remarkable and even allows a parent to see their child’s blood sugar when the child is at school or in a different state. This year, research is continuing to make these devices smaller, more accurate, and more user-friendly. As more companies develop systems with unique features, patients will be able to choose the product with features that best fit their needs.

BDCC Is One of Few labs in the World Making Insulin-Producing Beta Cells from Stem Cells Stem cell researchers at the Barbara Davis Center are now able to make insulin-producing beta cells derived from human stem cells on a large-scale. There are only a few labs in the world that are capable of this feat and the hope is to use these cells to treat type 1 diabetes patients. Several hurdles remain before cell replacement therapy can become a reality. Generated beta cells need an efficient delivery method, as well as effective protection to keep the patient’s immune system from destroying the cells. Dr. Holger A. Russ and his colleagues discovered that more than half of all beta cells die shortly after being transplanted. The lab is now working on strategies to improve the cell survival rate and protect them from autoimmune destruction to eventually use this cell therapy method to cure patients of diabetes. Dr. Holger A. Russ is currently an Assistant Professor at the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. His research focuses on the function of the human pancreatic beta cell, its interaction with the immune system, and how autoimmune type 1 diabetes develops. Dr. Russ and his team use this basic knowledge to develop novel strategies for cell therapy approaches to combat diabetes.
The Latino Program The Latino Program serves around 100 Latino patients and over 300 family members. Latino patients with type 1 face specific challenges to care related to cultural and language barriers, which puts them at high risk for poor diabetes control. The program spearheaded by Dr. Andrea Gerard Gonzalez, ensures that patients and their families are given care in a group of families with patients of similar ages and that all care and educational materials are given in their preferred language, which are adapted to be culturally appropriate. Almost all providers in the Latino Program are native speakers and are able to connect to patients through language and shared cultural values.

The Cost of Diabetes When a patient is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, the start-up education and appointment fees total $1,600. Insulin is absolutely necessary for a type 1 to survive and can cost $400 per month for children and $900 per month for adults. People with Type 1 diabetes need to test their blood sugar 4 to 10 times a day. Test strips are needed to do this and can cost up to $100 per week. Insulin pumps allow a patient to get 1 needle every 2-3 days instead of multiple times a day and can give small doses to manage type 1 diabetes more minutely. The start up for an insulin pump can be up to $6,500. Supplies for the insulin pump cost up to $1,200 per month. The Artificial Pancreas requires patients to start on an insulin pump and then upgrade to the automated version. This upgrade costs $2,500. Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) test a patient’s blood sugar every 5 minutes and give an immense amount of detail to better control blood sugar levels. Supplies for a CGM can cost $600 for a three-month supply. When blood sugars are too high, a patient may go into a dangerous physical state known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis. A hospital stay for this can easily cost $10,000 per day. If blood sugars are too low, a patient may go unconscious, have a seizure, or in extreme cases, die. Glucagon kits are the last resort to save a patient when they are not able to chew or swallow carbs and sugars to raise their blood sugar. These kits cost $300 per year and need to be replaced every 12 months.

MEANWHILE, WE ARE SEARCHING FOR A CURE‌ Research at the Barbara Davis Center costs about $1,000 per hour for expert staff and state-of-the-art equipment. Stem cell research is looking incredibly promising in ways of a cure, but $35,000 is required to produce enough beta cells for one patient. $75,000 will support a post-doctoral fellow for one year for clinical care at the Barbara Davis Center. $100,000 is needed to establish a new, groundbreaking research project for one year.

he Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes (BDC) is one of the largest centers in the world specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for children and adults. Clinicians, clinical researchers, and biomedical scientists work at the BDC to find the most effective treatment, prevention, and cure for type 1 diabetes. The center’s clinics provide state of the art care for over 7,000 children and adults with diabetes. Barbara Davis Center clinics offer extensive education and support for patients and their families as well as specialized programs such as the Pregnancy and Diabetes Clinic, the Hispanic/Latino Diabetes Care Program, and a model Telemedicine program servicing residents in Wyoming and remote parts of Colorado. BDC research goals include investigation of the causes of type 1 diabetes, the early detection of autoimmunity, prevention, and early intervention. BDC clinical faculty members are developing new strategies and treatments for improved outcomes of care, including prevention of complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Investigators of the BDC receive more than $6 million in research funding per year from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, and other federal, foundation and industry sponsors. Research areas include: • Artificial Pancreas/Hybrid Closed Loop Systems: The evaluation of devices for continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy and their combination with computer algorithms designed to adjust insulin delivery • Finding the Cause of Diabetes: The investigation of environmental and immunogenetic causes of type 1 diabetes and development of tests to predict the disease • Finding a Cure: The development of novel ideas and discoveries in the immunology, genetics, and cell biology of diabetes
The BDC Research Division provides cytometry and islet preparation services for local clientele. The Molecular Biology Service center provides basic molecular biology support, DNA sequencing and cell line authentication. The Autoantibody/HLA Service Center performs assays for islet autoantibodies and markers of other autoimmune disorders, including celiac and Addison’s disease. This laboratory serves as the core laboratory for numerous national and international trials for the prevention of type 1 diabetes. The BDC serves as a model for combining basic and clinical investigation and is an outstanding training environment for developing physician-scientists, clinicians and basic science researchers. Faculty members provide laboratory and clinical research training opportunities for young investigators from around the world including participants in the highly successful Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program and Pediatric Endocrinologist Career Development Program. The annual Keystone Conference remains the Center’s flagship in the area of continuing medical education (CME) in Management of Diabetes, regularly selling out with over 500 participants. What is Diabetes? KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF Type 1 Diabetes Extreme Thirst Frequent Urination Excessive Irritability Drowsiness or Lethargy Sudden Weight Loss Sudden Vision Changes Fruity Odor on the Breath
Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that afflicts 30 million people in the United States, about 1.25 million of whom have type 1 diabetes (also known as childhood, juvenile, or insulin-dependent diabetes). Approximately 40,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year and this number continues to rise. You have probably heard of insulin and glucose, but how do they work? After you eat a meal, food is broken down into glucose and nutrients, which are absorbed into the blood stream. This causes sugar levels in the blood to rise, which triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and release it into the bloodstream. In people with diabetes, the body either can’t make or can’t respond to insulin properly. Because of this, people with type 1 diabetes take artificial insulin throughout the day to counteract high blood sugars. They take the medicine through multiple doses of insulin every day, either through injections or an insulin pump worn on the body. While these measures are certainly helpful for maintaining a steady blood sugar, they are not a perfect science. There are many variables that go into diabetes management, such as diet, exercise, hormones, stress levels, and countless others.
Another concern for diabetics is low blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurred vision, shaking, sweating, slurred speech, irritability, drowsiness, and acting incoherent or spacey. If the blood sugar is severely low, the person may become unconscious or have a seizure. These low blood sugars put a diabetic in immediate danger. Type 1 diabetes means being connected to multiple devices 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Many people use an insulin pump, which is dispensing artificial insulin throughout the day, as well as a Continuous Glucose Monitor, which measures blood sugar levels every 5 minutes to show trends and reduce finger pricks. These devices are extremely helpful for diabetes management, but often require more needles and devices to be worn. While they usually improve blood sugar levels, these medical supplies come at a huge expense for the patient or family. Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes. Each child who is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will have the disease for the rest of his or her life, unless we can find a cure. The risk of developing diabetes is higher than virtually all other childhood, chronic illnesses. It is estimated that one out of every three babies born today will have diabetes in their lifetime. For this reason, the Barbara Davis Center continues to improve diabetes care and search for a cure for diabetes.
The Advocate Program The Children’s Diabetes Foundation’s (CDF) Advocate Program was created in 2017 for individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) between the ages of 6 and 22, who want to educate, volunteer, and socialize with other type 1’s. These Advocates are the face of CDF and exude a positive attitude about T1D while creating awareness for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. Meet a few of our Advocates.
Sequoia “Pepper” Boeke Meet Pepper! She is an outgoing 9 year old in the 3rd grade. She was 7 years old when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, but it has never slowed her down. Pepper competes in the Master’s division in Taekwondo and is fiercely competitive when she’s on the mat. She also loves golf, basketball, cooking, art, reading, American Girl dolls and all things girlie. Pepper is passionate about spreading kindness and type 1 diabetes awareness. You will always see her with a smile on her face and a CGM in her arm. Her goal is to combine her love of teaching others and medicine to one day be a provider at a teaching hospital.
Christian Dana Christian is 11 years old. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 6 years old. He stays active by being involved with a variety of sports including football, wrestling, and basketball. Christian also loves spending time with his friends and family, anything outdoors, and riding his 4 wheeler. Ever since a young age, Christian has always said that he wants to grow up and be in the military (specifically the Air Force). He has however realized that since his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes, this dream may be limited. This does not stop him though from hoping things will change, otherwise he says he will grow up and serve his community as a police officer. Christian’s hope for the future is a cure for type 1 diabetes.
Ellie Hampton Meet Ellie. She is 8 years old and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 6 years old. Ellie lives in Illinois and enjoys spending time at her family’s farm. She likes to tumble, ride her horse Sparky, draw and swim. When she grows up she wants to be a veterinarian so she can take care of animals. Ellie’s hope for the future is to have a healthy life without the worries and daily struggles of diabetes.

Frankie Hodgson Frankie is 6 years old. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was 2 years old. She enjoys going to concerts, hanging out with friends, and swimming on the swim team. When she grows up she wants to be a scientist. Her number one hope for the future is to cure type one diabetes for children and grown-ups.
Keaton Isakon Keaton is 10 years old and in the 5th grade. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was only 2 years old and doesn’t really remember life without it. He refuses to let type 1 slow him down. He loves all sports, but is really passionate about tennis. He’s obsessed with animals, especially his dog, Sawyer. He dreams of living by the ocean someday, surfing part time, being a professional tennis player, and actively helping to find a cure for type 1. Keaton believes CDF and the Barbara Davis Center will find the cure and he loves to use his gifts to advocate and raise awareness in the mean time.
Keller Sears Keller is 11 years old. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 8 years old. Keller don’t let diabetes stop him from doing anything! He likes to stay active and be funny! When he is not on the court playing basketball or on the mountain skiing you might find Keller playing video games. His hope for the future is to be in the NBA and to find a cure for diabetes.

My darling Dana, You are the most precious, wonderful, hard working girl, helping and doing so much work to help find a cure for a disease called Type 1 diabetes. When you were 7 years old, a trip to the doctor told us that you had a disease called diabetes. I called your dad from the hospital and said Dana has diabetes, your dad said, “What’s that”? I said “it’s an illness” and he said, “Fix it.” We built the Barbara Davis Center to “fix it” and to help treat and find a cure for this disease that had just come on us. In the years fixing it, since the day you were diagnosed, we have worked very hard and enlisted the most wonderful doctors and researchers to help fix it. On this 40th anniversary of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes I am so proud of the work, the progress and great strides that has been achieved in the fight against diabetes - made in great part to you. After you were diagnosed, as parents, your dad and I only wanted to help you and to assure you everything would be fine, you were a brave seven year old asking questions which had no answers - we only wanted to hold you, love you and tell you it will be alright, but in our hearts we were as lost for answers as you. The Barbara Davis Center was built with you in mind as our guide, to do the research and clinical testing needed to help thousands, now millions of other type 1 diabetics. You have been the inspiration, you have been the leader and now you are the Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. It is a legacy in your honor which never would have been possible, the world now knows more about diabetes than ever before. Watching you as a little girl riding the carousel and reaching for the Brass Ring inspired the Carousel of Hope which we are now celebrating the 34th Annual event and for the first time it is being shown virtually all over the world. With so many viewers tuning in to see the talent that has joined together to help in our fight, we are bringing awareness to every corner of the globe. The treatment has improved greatly over the past 40 years and we are still striving for a cure. Your tireless efforts in meeting with doctors and researchers, always making time to reassure parents and their children that diabetes is not the end of the world, they will still lead healthy, productive lives and there is now so much help available... lots of it... and the Barbara Davis Center welcomes everyone with open arms.
