This is a very special evening as we celebrate the research and advancements we have made for type 1 diabetes which has improved greatly over the past 42 years. Your presence here tonight helps the wonderful doctors and researchers who are striving to find a cure for diabetes, and I thank you so much for your support. These efforts will help the 30 million people in America living with diabetes and the 463 million who are battling this disease all around the world. We have come a long way since we opened the Barbara Davis Center forty years ago and we won’t stop fighting until there is a cure.
To my dear, dear friend Clive Davis - who knows music better than anyone. Your talent for music has been a gift to not only me, but to the world. You are the most generous, kind, caring friend and I love you and thank you for always being there for me.
To my George Schlatter who is our producer this evening and who has helped me from the day I met him - I give you a huge hug. And thank you to your beautiful Jolene who has given her time, energy, and love. Words can’t express how I feel about you both.

The disease has doubled over the last twenty years and is projected to double yet again by 2030. Marvin and I began this effort over forty years ago when our daughter Dana was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Our dream was to build a clinic with the most advanced ways to treat diabetes, prevent complications, and do research. Today, the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes has become one of the leading centers for diabetes in the world. The Barbara Davis Center treats thousands of patients from across the nation and around the world regardless of their ability to pay. 35% of our patients are at or below poverty level and 40% are uninsured or underinsured. We welcome everyone with open arms.
I am just so grateful for all of you tonight who have joined us in the fight to overcome a disease which leads to so many terrible complications. I thank you for your generosity and for being here to join our battle against type 1 diabetes.

The Children’s Diabetes Foundation was established by Barbara and Marvin Davis in 1977 in Denver as a non-profit organization dedicated solely to the support of research in diabetes and to provide the best possible clinical and educational programs for people with the disease. The Foundation’s mission is to raise funds to support the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, where thousands of patients of all ages from all over the world receive the finest diabetes care available.

Barbara Davis Center’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art care to children and adults with type 1 diabetes and to teach their patients how to prevent or delay complications. Their research is devoted to preventing diabetes, curing the disease, and the most effective treatment of diabetes and associated disorders.
CDF’s philanthropic efforts enabled the construction of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes in Denver, which opened its doors in 1980. In 2005, BDC moved to a modern facility with 120,000 square feet of clinics and laboratories. Initially, the Center was helping 100 children with diabetes. Today, the BDC is one of the leading diabetes institutes in the world, proudly serving more than 7,600 children and adults with diabetes.
In the past 40 years, the CDF’s support of $110 million has kept the BDC at the forefront of innovation in the rapidly changing field of diabetes research and care. By investing in the BDC’s skilled faculty, state-of-the-art facilities and widely respected programs, CDF has opened a world of opportunity for thousands of patients and families in need of life-changing care. The BDC’s Center of excellence has expanded care to adults (1991) with type 1 diabetes, including pregnant women, diabetes eye care (1996), and telemedicine (2012).
The Brass Ring Award was designed by artist Robert Graham (1938-2008) for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. The Award is still being produced at the studio by his son Steven Graham. It consists of a small child’s hand, catching a brass ring. The award is cast in bronze, and gilded and engraved with the recipient’s name.
Robert Graham was born in Mexico City and studied at San Jose State College and the San Francisco Art Institute. He is known for civic monuments, such as the Olympic Gateway 1984 in Los Angeles; Monument to Joe Louis 1986 in Detroit; Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial 1997 in Washington DC; Duke Ellington Memorial in 1997 in New York City; Charlie “Bird” Parker 1999 in Kansas City, and the Great Bronze Doors of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles 2002 in Los Angeles. Robert Graham also designed the National Medal Arts, presented by the President of the United States, and the California Hall of Fame, presented by the Governor. His work is included in the collection of many national and international museums.

A longtime supporter of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, actress and director Diane Keaton will receive this year’s “Brass Ring Award” for her philanthropic commitments to the community and continued support of the cause. In addition to her work with the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and Stand Up To Cancer, Keaton has also supported causes including Alliance For Children’s Rights, Helen Woodward Animal Center and NCCRA.
Keaton has bolstered the Carousel of Hope and the Children’s Diabetes Foundation by serving on the Entertainment Committee previously and has attended the event for many years not only as a pillar of her community, but as a dear friend of the Davis family.
In her six decade-long acting career, Keaton has starred in some of Hollywood’s most memorable films including “The Godfather” trilogy, “Annie Hall,” “Manhattan,” “Reds,” “Baby Boom,” “The First Wives Club,” “Father of the Bride,” “Something’s Gotta Give,” “Book Club,” and is currently in production filming “Book Club 2: The Next Chapter in Europe.”
Throughout her career, Keaton has received numerous awards for her exemplary work including the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award in 2017 and both a BAFTA and an Oscar for her leading role in the 1977 film, “Annie Hall.”
Outside of her acting roles, Keaton has made a name for herself as a real-estate developer, a best-selling author, and a winemaker. “The Keaton” wine name is now synonymous with its creator for a legacy of excellence and gutsiness.

EGOT-winning, critically acclaimed, multiplatinum singer-songwriter John Legend has garnered 11 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award, among others.
Legend is the first African-American man to earn an EGOT and one of only fifteen people in the prestigious EGOT club. Legend has released seven celebrated albums over the course of his career, including, Get Lifted (2004), Once Again (2006), Evolver (2008), Love in the Future (2013), Darkness and Light (2016), A Legendary Christmas Deluxe (2019), and Bigger Love (2020). Currently, Legend’s “All of Me” ties with Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber’s ”Despacito” as the highest certified track in Recording Industry Association of America’s history.
Legend starred as Jesus in NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” in April 2018. That year, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie and won an Emmy as a producer in the category of Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for the show.
Legend joined “The Voice” for Season 16 (2019) and is currently a coach on Season 19. In October 2018, Legend released his first Christmas album, A Legendary Christmas, and closed out the year with his A Legendary Christmas tour. He released a special A Legendary Christmas Deluxe version in 2019.
Beyond his music career, John, along with partners Mike Jackson and Ty Stiklorius, is a principal in the Get Lifted Film Co. Most recently, Get Lifted produced David E. Talbert’s acclaimed holiday film “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” for Netflix, the HBO docuseries “Atlanta’s Missing And Murdered: The Lost Children,” the IFC and AMC comedy series ”Sherman’s Showcase” and “Sherman’s Showcase: Black History Month Spectacular,” and “Rhythm + Flow” for Netflix. Their forthcoming projects include the documentary “40 Years A Prisoner,” launching on HBO Max on December 8, 2020, the documentary “Giving Voice,” which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival and will be available for streaming on Netflix on December 11, 2020, the film “Monster,” which was recently acquired by Netflix, the sports drama “Signing Day” in partnership with Steph Curry’s Unanimous Media for Sony Pictures, a female-fronted film written by Adam Hoff about a modern-day Jerry Maguire, the film adaptation of S.A. As a philanthropist, Legend initiated the #FREEAMERICA campaign in 2015 to change the national conversation surrounding our country’s misguided criminal justice policies and to end mass incarceration. In addition to Legend’s signature initiatives, he serves on the Board of Directors of Harlem Village Academies and Management Leadership for Tomorrow, and on the Advisory Board for The Quattrone Center for the Fair Administration of Justice at the University of Pennsylvania Law School and Teach for All.

HHowie Mandel has remained a constant force in show business for more than 30 years. He can currently be seen as host of the hit Netflix series Bullshit the Game Show and on NBC’s flagship series America’s Got Talent, where he has served as a judge for over 12 seasons. He can also be heard on his podcast Howie Mandel Does Stuff which he co-hosts alongside his daughter, Jackelyn Schultz. New episodes drop every Tuesday and are available on all platforms. In Spring 2022 he appeared on the reboot of Canada’s Got Talent alongside Lilly Singh, Kardinal Offishall and Trish Stratus which aired on CityTV. Other recent projects include his documentary Howie Mandel: But Enough About Me, currently streaming on Peacock, his annual CW special Howie Mandel & Friends: Don’t Sneeze on Me, now streaming on FuboTV, NBC’s America’s Got Talent: The Champions, CNBC’s Deal or No Deal, co-hosting Nat Geo Wild’s Animals Doing Things with his son Alex. In Summer 2021 Howie launched his own eyewear capsule collection in collaboration with SEE, the “go to” locale for eyewear aficionados looking for an eclectic selection of fashion forward eyewear. The collection is available for purchase on SEE’s website and a portion of sales from the collection will be donated to HFC, Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen’s national non-profit organization whose mission is to care for families impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. In 2020 Howie teamed up with ePlay Digital Inc. and launched the charity, Breakout the Masks, and mobile game campaign to give back to those involved in the fight against COVID-19. Via Howies’ Games the first challenge is Outbreak where players’ points translate to donations of N95 face masks, portable ventilators, gloves and other Personal Protective Equipment to doctors, nurses and more
front line workers. The second game SwishAR has users looking for America’s Got Talent’s, Howie Mandel, to join in a backyard basketball game to shoot hoops. Both games are available on the Apple App store and Google Play.
His additional projects as a host, actor, and/or executive producer include Take It All and Howie Do It for NBC, Deal With It for TBS and Mobbed for Fox. Previously, Mandel received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program for Deal or No Deal and a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Game Show Host for the syndicated version of the show. Mandel’s versatile career has encompassed virtually all aspects of the entertainment spectrum, including television, film and stage. From his work on the Emmy Award-winning St. Elsewhere, to the international animated children’s series Bobby’s World, Mandel has become a mainstay of the American comedy scene. In 2009, Mandel added author to his resume when he released his frank, funny and noholds-barred memoir, “Here’s the Deal: Don’t Touch Me.”
The memoir revealed his ongoing struggle with OCD and ADHD, and how it has shaped his life and career. It made The New York Times bestseller list on its first week and remained on the list for several consecutive weeks. Mandel has done countless comedy specials both on cable and network television. He has also hosted his own syndicated talk show, The Howie Mandel Show and continues to be a mainstay on the talk show circuit. He also continues to perform as many as 200 stand up comedy shows each year throughout the U.S. and Canada.
George Schlatter is a veteran of over 50 years in network television. Throughout his long and successful career as a producer, director and writer, George Schlatter has been responsible for hundreds of hours of television series and specials. He changed the face of television when he created and produced such breakthrough series as LAUGH-IN and REAL PEOPLE. Over the years, Mr. Schlatter has received numerous honors and awards including 25 Emmy Award nominations, five Emmys, three Image Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Television Critics Awards, the International Radio & Television “Man of the Year” Award, Directors Guild Award, Producers Guild “Man of the Year” Award, as well as many others. When the Television Academy celebrated its 15th Anniversary, they honored him for his outstanding contribution to television. In 1989, he was awarded a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. In 1992 Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra, on behalf of the Scott Newman Center, honored him with a tribute dinner for his showmanship and involvement to so many charitable causes. In 1995, the Museum of Television & Radio did a special tribute to him for his contributions in the world of television.
He was also honored by his alma mater, Pepperdine University, with a three-hour gala at the Saban Theater hosted by many of the stars with whom he has worked over the past 50 years.
In 1987 he created and established the AMERICAN COMEDY AWARDS, which aired for 15 straight years as annual network televised events designed to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of comedic actors and performers. “Of all the work I’ve done, I am perhaps most proud of my involvement in the early careers of performers like Goldie Hawn, Lily Tomlin, Roseanne, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Flip Wilson and others who have gone on to greater heights. Working with stars is rewarding, but helping to create stars is the most fulfilling of all accomplishments.” This year he was invited to participate in the opening of the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.
He produced the first 5 years of the Grammy Awards plus CBS television series with Cher and with Bill Cosby as well as “The Judy Garland Show” and all the way back to the “Dinah Shore Chevy Show” on NBC. He produced specials starring Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Eddie Murphy, Elton John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Liza Minnelli, Cher, Michael Jackson, Doris Day, Jonathan Winters, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine, Lucille Ball, Jackie Gleason, Diana Ross, Lena Horne, Placido Domingo, Nat King Cole and scores of others.
Mr. Schlatter and Whoopi Goldberg co-produced a special based on the life of Moms Mabley which included interviews with Sidney Poitier, Quincy Jones, Tommy Smothers, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Kathy Griffin and many others. He also has produced a “Laugh-In” reunion show for a PBS pledge drive, which was the most successful comedy special ever for PBS and a 50th Anniversary “Laugh-In” special for Netflix.
His credits also include The American Film Institute Life Achievement Award Salutes to Dustin Hoffman and Harrison Ford, The 54th and 55th Presidential Inaugural Opening Ceremonies of George W. Bush and The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Inaugural Gala: Finding a Cure and Nancy Reagan: A Love Story. For over twenty years he has produced all of the Barbara Davis Carousel of Hope events here in Beverly Hills, which created the Barbara Davis Children’s Diabetes Center in Denver. He is particularly proud of the work he did in helping Barbara Sinatra create her center for the treatment of sexually abused children at the Eisenhower hospital in Palm Springs.
He is married to former actress Jolene Brand who was a regular on the Ernie Kovacs Show. They have two daughters, Andrea and Maria.
As the record industry’s most innovative and influential executive, Clive Davis has had a profound effect on the world of music. In the first phase of his career, Davis was General Counsel of Columbia Records and was appointed Vice President and General Manager in 1966. In 1967 he was named President of the company and personally signed Janis Joplin’s Big Brother and The Holding Company to Columbia. After that, he was directly responsible for the signing of many more landmark artists in the rock field, among them Blood, Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Santana, Loggins & Messina, Laura Nyro, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire. In addition, he brought to the label such artists as Neil Diamond, Pink Floyd, and The Isley Brothers.
While building the rock roster, Davis also played a key role in the careers of Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand and Andy Williams. Davis figured prominently in shaping career turning points for Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, and he signed Weather Report. Under his aegis, the company made a strong entry into r&b. Davis’ deal with Gamble & Huff brought to the company the famed Philadelphia-International label, which had an enormous string of hits and set the course for black music in the ‘70s with the O’Jays, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes featuring Teddy Pendergrass and Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs. Jones”.
Davis left Columbia Records in May 1973 and, after writing the book, Clive: Inside The Record Business, a national best-seller in both hard cover and paperback, he founded with Columbia Pictures, Arista Records in the fall of 1974. Only three months after the company opened its doors Barry Manilow’s smash hit “Mandy”, found by and named by Davis, went straight to #1.
Under Davis’ leadership, Arista launched the careers of Whitney Houston, Barry Manilow, Patti Smith, Kenny G and Sarah McLachlan. The label also attracted such important artists as Aretha Franklin, The Grateful Dead, The Kinks, Lou Reed, Eurythmics, Dionne Warwick, Hall & Oates, and Carly Simon.
Analogous to his agreement with Gamble & Huff in the seventies, Davis made his agreement with L.A. Reid and Babyface to form LaFace Records in October 1989. During this time, LaFace built an outstanding roster of hitmaking artists including TLC, Toni Braxton, Usher, OutKast, and Pink. In 1994, Davis and producer/entrepreneur Sean “Puffy” Combs entered into a 50/50 joint venture that
resulted in the creation of Bad Boy Records with an artist roster that grew to include Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, Mase, Total, 112, and of course Puffy Combs. Along with LaFace Records, Bad Boy became the most successful HipHop and Rap label of the ’90s.
Throughout the ‘90s, Arista staked its place in music history time and time again. The 9x Grammy winning album, Supernatural, sold over 26 million copies worldwide, produced the #1 hits “Smooth” and “Maria Maria”, marked the reunion of Carlos Santana and Clive Davis and the two accepted, as co-producers, the Grammy for Best Album of The Year.
Also, in 2000, Clive Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as the only non-performer. Almost simultaneously, it was announced that he would be the recipient of the Trustees Lifetime Achievement award by NARAS at the Grammy Awards.
In August 2000, Clive Davis began a new phase in his career, announcing the formation of J Records. The label quickly became the buzz of the industry, beginning with Alicia Keys whose debut album Songs In A Minor sold over 10 million copies and swept the Grammys. J Records emerged as a dominant music force with chart topping albums by Maroon 5, whose debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide, Annie Lennox, Luther Vandross, Rod Stewart (whose five Great American Songbook Volumes returned him to the top of the charts selling over 22 million copies worldwide with all five volumes being co-produced by Davis), and Jennifer Hudson.
In 2002, Mary Schmidt Campbell, dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and Clive Davis, announced a $5 million gift by Davis to the School for the creation of a new Department of Recorded Music. The Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music is the first of its kind to offer a four-year, degree-granting undergraduate program that recognizes the creative producer as an artist in his own right and musical recording itself as a creative medium.
In the year 2008, Clive Davis was appointed Chief Creative Officer for all of Sony Music Entertainment, a change in operational responsibility but an expansion of the artists he would now creatively be responsible for.
In the year 2010, NARAS named the prestigious state of the art theater inside the Grammy Museum the “Clive Davis Theater”. And in the year 2011, New York University awarded an Honorary PhD of Fine Arts to Clive Davis. Also
in 2011, Davis made an additional gift of $5 million to the Tisch School, expanding the Department of Recorded Music into an Institute.
In February 2013, Simon and Schuster published Davis’ autobiography The Soundtrack of My Life. It entered The New York Times’ Non-Fiction Best Seller list at #2 and remained in its top ten for nine consecutive weeks. The book was published as a paperback in November 2013.
The Ridley Scott firm produced a widely, much praised film documentary on Davis’ life called:“Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives”. It opened the Tribeca Film Festival at Radio City Music Hall on April 19, 2017 and won The Critics’ Choice Award and The Hollywood Music and Media Award for Best Documentary.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Clive Davis was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of New York University (1953), where he received his B.A. magna cum laude and he graduated
with honors from Harvard Law School (1956). He resides in Manhattan with two sons and a daughter residing in Manhattan and one son living in Los Angeles.

Named by Time Magazine as one of the six most influential Jazz artists of the 20th Century, Quincy Jones is an impresario in the broadest and most creative sense of the word. Over six-decades, Jones’ career has encompassed the roles of composer, record producer, artist, film producer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, TV producer, record company executive, television station owner, magazine founder, multi-media entrepreneur and humanitarian. Among the multitude of awards that he has received for his contributions are an Emmy Award, seven Academy Award nominations, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, 27 Grammy Awards, and is the all-time most nominated Grammy artist with a total of 79 nominations. He is the recipient of the Republic of France’s Commandeur de la Legion d’ Honneur, and in 2001 he was inducted as a “Kennedy Center Honoree,” the United States’ most prestigious cultural award, for his lifetime contributions to the culture of the country. He was recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master - the nation’s highest jazz honor, and in 2010 was bestowed the National Medal of Arts, our nation’s highest artistic honor. In 2016, Jones received a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical for the Broadway production of “The Color Purple. The award completed the rare EGOT set for Jones, an exclusive club of artists who have received an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award.
In 2001, Quincy Jones added the title “Best Selling Author” to his list of accomplishments when his autobiography “Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones” entered the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal BestSellers lists. Released by Doubleday Publishing, the critically acclaimed biography retells Jones’ life story from his days as an impoverished youth on the Southside of Chicago through a massively impressive career in music, film and television where he worked beside legends such as Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Michael Jackson, among many others. In conjunction with the autobiography, Rhino Records released a 4-cd boxed set of Jones’ music, spanning his more than 5 decade career in the music business, entitled “Q: The Musical Biography of Quincy Jones.” In 2008, he released the coffee-table book “The Complete Quincy Jones: My Journey and Passions.”
In 2010 Jones released his latest record Soul Bossa Nostra, an album featuring some of the day’s biggest recording artists and producers such as Usher, Ludacris, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, T-Pain, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Wyclef Jean, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Three 6 Mafia, David Banner, Bebe Winans, Mervyn Warren, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Paul, and Scott Storch, among others. These artists joined together to celebrate the music of the multi-Grammy winning producer, composer and arranger by recording contemporary versions of popular recordings from his massive catalog.
These days, Quincy is furthering his philanthropic works in conjunction with his business endeavors he conducts through The Quincy Jones Global Network. His newest ventures include managing a roster of young musicians he calls the Global Gumbo All Stars; developing partnerships with multiple companies across the globe to execute various entertainment projects; managing his line of licensed products; and continuing to produce music and films.
A longtime humanitarian and activist, in 1999 Quincy Jones joined Bono and Bob Geldof during a meeting with Pope John Paul II as a part of the Jubilee 2000 delegation to end third world debt. The delegation’s visit resulted in $27 billion in third world debt being relieved. Through his Project Q Foundation, a joint initiative with the Harvard School of Public Health, Jones is actively working with NGO’s such as UNICEF, the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative and the Inter-American Development Bank, among others, to improve the health and well being of millions of children in developing countries such as Rwanda, South Africa and Asia.
Jones is also the founder of the Quincy Jones Music Consortium, a cooperative of musicians, music and arts educators, corporations, foundations and philanthropists tasked with developing an innovative curriculum to be implemented in America’s schools that explores, celebrates and preserves the history of American Popular Music so that music education can be an ongoing part of the lives of the children of the United States.
My name is Hailey Kiker and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was just two years old. I live in Denver, Colorado, and I have been a patient at the Barbara Davis Center for over 8 years now.
I am so honored to be leading you in a prayer this evening.

We thank you for bringing us together to support a cause that affects a tremendous amount of people and certainly a lot of kids. And we are very thankful that You have kept us safe & healthy throughout the year. We pray for the doctors and nurses at the Barbara Davis Center because they are more than doctors and nurses to us. They are individuals who deeply care about every patient. We pray for the researchers as they work tirelessly to understand this complex disease. And we pray for all the families affected by type 1 diabetes. It’s not an easy disease to live with.
Those of us impacted by this disease envision a life without constantly managing our blood sugar. We envision a time when we no longer will have to wear a pump and inject insulin into our bodies. We envision a world free of this disease. And so with this hope, we pray for a cure.
I want to thank Barbara Davis, Dana Davis, and each of you for being here tonight and for your support. It means a lot to all of us living with type 1 diabetes and offers hope that we will someday achieve the cure we seek.

Hailey is a very busy 10-year-old who is active in playing softball, basketball, swimming on her neighborhood swim team, and learning to play volleyball. She is passionate about reading and creating art. Hailey serves as an advocate for for the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center in which she participates in events throughout the year and helps to fundraise. She was diagnosed at the age of two, however it hasn’t slowed her down. She is very open with being a type 1 diabetic so that her friends and the world around her can understand the complexity of this disease. Learning to think like a pancreas has become her superpower. When she grows up, Hailey aspires to be our country’s president.

The 2022 Carousel of Hope (COH) symposium’s first session will focus on emerging diabetes technologies for improving healthcare outcomes. There is strong data that supports the use of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in patients requiring insulin therapy for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Specifically, data supports improvement in glucose control and significant reduction in hypoglycemia especially severe and nocturnal and reduced episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
There are more than 537 million people with diabetes diagnoses globally and in the US there are about 40 million with diabetes. There are approximately 100-150 million people with diabetes requiring insulin treatment. More recently, there have been 3 hybrid closed loop systems (HCL) that are either FDA or EMA approved for the use in patients with type 1 diabetes. Globally, (mostly in the USA and western Europe) about 1.5 million people with type 1 diabetes use one of the three systems (Medtronic 780G, Tandem Control IQ, and OmniPod 5), commonly referred to as artificial pancreas systems. Past, present, and future of CGM and HCL systems were discussed by Dr. Satish Garg.
Dr. Sarit Polsky discussed the different implantable CGMs and the future of continuous ketone measurements along with CGM. Barriers of implementing different diabetes technologies was discussed by Dr. Anne Peters. Jake Leach highlighted the sensor technologies for the future.
The basic science research session chaired by Dr. Lori Sussel highlighted the future of cell therapy for people with type 1 diabetes. It is likely that in the fall of 2022 the first drug for preventing type 1 diabetes (teplizumab) might be approved by the FDA. Dr. Francisco Leon discussed ways to identify possible patients with antibody positive who might benefit from this new therapy in delaying the onset of T1D by at least two years. Dr. Todd Brusko discussed frontier immunology of T1D and Janet Snell-Bergeon updated the participants on cardiovascular complications in T1D.

He currently serves as the Research Director of the UF Diabetes Institute where he oversees multiple projects seeking to understand pediatric immune system development in health and in those with T1D.

Dr. Garg is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Adult Clinic of the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes of the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. He joined the faculty of the Barbara Davis Center in 1992 and became the founder and director of the Adult Clinic. He established and holds two Garg Endowed Chairs (clinical and clinical research) at the University of Colorado Denver. His team is one of the top teams world-wide in clinical trials involving insulin analogues and novel methods of insulin delivery (pens, pumps, oral, buccal and inhaled) and non-insulin adjunctive treatment options for Type 1 Diabetes. Other areas of interest include continuous glucose monitors, evaluating the accuracy of meters at high altitude, and artificial pancreas systems.
Dr. Garg is the Editor in chief of Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics journal since 2006 and Chair of the planning committee for Clinical Therapeutics and New Technology area for 2007 and 2008 Annual American Diabetes Associations meetings. He is the director of ATDC Diabetes Conference, in Keystone, since 2005 and helps coordinate 1-year Diabetes Fellowship at BDC/UCD. He is an international lecturer and speaker—he received several international oration awards—and has published many chapters in the books, on the editorial boards for many of the diabetes journals globally and has published more than 335 original manuscripts in peer-review journals.
Mr. Leach is responsible for the leadership of scientific research, engineering, product development, project management, clinical affairs, medical affairs, and global access and evidence. His teams are responsible for delivering best in class glucose monitoring technology paired with an exceptional user experience.
Jake joined Dexcom in March 2004 to lead development of sensor electronics which were part of the first generation Dexcom system. Jake has since served in various leadership roles at Dexcom. Prior to Dexcom, Jake held positions in research and development at MiniMed and subsequently Medtronic Diabetes, focusing on the development of glucose sensing systems.
Jake holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Dr. Leon is the Chief Scientific Officer and co-founder of Provention Bio, the company driving development of teplizumab and the T1D-oriented coxsackievirus vaccine. Francisco is an immunologist and entrepreneur focused on autoimmunity who has started three companies and has contributed to the development of 5 approved medicines for autoimmune diseases.

Dr. Peters runs diabetes centers in Beverly Hills and in underserved East Los Angeles. In addition to her clinical work, she has been a Principal Investigator on multiple grants and has written over 200 abstracts and publications and 4 books. Her major interests involve translating research findings, from lifestyle interventions to technology, to people with diabetes throughout the socioeconomic spectrum. She was presented with the ADA “Outstanding Physician Clinician” award, the Bernardo Alberto Houssay Award from the National Minority Quality Forum, the Endocrine Society Laureate Award for public service and has been listed on the “Best Doctors in America” continuously since 2001.
Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO
Dr. Polsky is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She joined the BDC in 2014. Dr. Polsky’s research focuses on the use of advanced diabetes technologies and therapeutics to improve glycemic control and health outcomes in people with T1D.
Professor of Pediatrics and Medicine, Executive Director, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, University of Colorado School of Medicine, Aurora, CO
Dr. Rewers is a pediatric diabetologist and an internationally recognized scientist. He has made important contributions to our understanding of the etiology of type 1 diabetes and its macrovascular complications by creating large prospective studies: DAISY and TEDDY that are finding the causes of type 1 diabetes and ways to prevent it. His Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) program in Colorado is screening children for early diabetes and celiac disease to prevent or treat these diseases as soon as possible.
Janet Snell-Bergeon, Ph.D.
Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology Division Director, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Aurora, CO
Dr. Snell-Bergeon is a Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology and is the Clinical Epidemiology Division Director at the Barbara Davis Center. Her research focuses on the complications of type 1 diabetes, particularly cardiovascular and kidney disease, sex differences in complications, and maternal and child health in the context of diabetes.
Lori Sussel, Ph.D.
Professor of Pediatrics and Cell & Developmental Biology, Sissel and Findlow Stem Cell Chair, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Associate Vice Chancellor for Basic Science Research, University of Colorado, Aurora, CO
Dr. Sussel is a Professor of Pediatrics and the Director of Basic and Translational Research Division at f the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes. She is also Director of the NIH funded Diabetes Research Center. Her research program investigates the regulation of islet cell biology during physiological and diabetic conditions.
R. Paul Wadwa, MD
Professor of Pediatrics, Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes, Aurora, CO
Dr. Wadwa is Director of the Pediatric Clinic at the Barbara Davis Center and is the Wagner Chair in Childhood Diabetes. His primary research focus is on the clinical implementation of automated insulin delivery systems. He has served as the site principal investigator for several studies with the goal of advancing diabetes technology and other therapies to improve the lives of people with diabetes mellitus. Dr. Wadwa also leads the Barbara Davis Center telemedicine program and currently serves on the Advisory Council for the International Society of Pediatric Diabetes (ISPAD).
Over 40 years ago, when the Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center were created, diabetes looked like a completely different disease. Home blood testing didn’t exist, synthetic insulins were unheard of, and you had to boil syringes in water before injecting large needles.
Today, we have artificial pancreases, continuous glucose monitors, a choice between insulin pumps or injections, and so many other exciting medications and therapies that make diabetes management fit into the patient’s life, not the other way around. The Barbara Davis Center is a huge contributor to these advancements as they continually work on cutting-edge technology and medications.
But sadly, we haven’t reached the finish line. Diabetes requires constant management and the physical, emotional, and social stress that diabetes can cause is ever-present in a diabetic and their family’s lives.
The Children’s Diabetes Foundation and the Barbara Davis Center are fighting to improve patient lives every day by providing the best possible patient care, providing support groups, educating the public, and doing research to prevent diabetes, reduce its complications, and eventually find a cure.
The people who are affected by type 1 diabetes aren’t just patients.
They are our heroes and we will help them every step of the way.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our faculty member, colleague and friend, Dr. Robert H. Slover II.
During his career, Dr. Slover had a major impact on pediatric endocrinology and diabetes. He served as a mentor and educator for hundreds of faculty, fellows, residents and students, and a compassionate physician to thousands of patients and families. His research contributions as a clinical investigator impacted clinical care of diabetes at the international level.
Dr. Slover was known for his compassion, commitment to the highest level of patient care and teaching of trainees as well as his contributions in clinical research. His clinical research most recently focused on the implementation of diabetes technology and the artificial pancreas to benefit pediatric and young adult patients with type 1 diabetes. He served as the site principal investigator for several studies at the Barbara Davis Center including hybrid closed loop systems in children as young as age 8 years.
He has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications.
From 2011 to 2021. Dr. Slover served as the Director of the Barbara Davis Center Pediatric Clinic and was the first holder of the Wagner Family Chair in Childhood Diabetes. He was a Professor of Pediatrics in the University of Colorado School of Medicine. During his time as director, the division doubled its clinical and research operations.
The impact he has had during his career will continue to benefit countless colleagues, trainees, patients and families for many years to come.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, mentees, clinical and research staff and by his patients and their families.
In the past few years, diabetes technology has made incredible strides and 2022 has created even more technology that will improve life for people with type 1 diabetes. Since the availability of the first Artificial Pancreas system from Medtronic in 2016, many newer systems are now available for insulin-requiring patients with diabetes. The artificial pancreas, or Hybrid Closed Loop, is a system that combines an insulin pump working in conjunction with a continuous glucose monitor to keep blood sugars in target range by automatically adjusting insulin delivery based on predicted blood sugars. Most of the Hybrid Closed Loop systems significantly reduce hypoglycemia and make an attempt at reducing diabetes burden.
A Continuous Glucose Monitor checks a patient’s glucose level every 1-5 minutes through a tiny sensor that stays under the skin for 7, 10 or 14 days. Most of the current CGMs now do not need finger-pricks to calibrate the CGM and are used as stand-alone devices. The device displays graphs of data on a receiver or a smartphone throughout the day to show how quickly blood sugar levels are rising or falling, and alarms when blood sugar levels are too high or low. This feature is particularly helpful when the patient is sleeping. These devices are truly remarkable and even allows a parent to see their child’s blood sugar when the child is at school or in a different state. Now the research is continuing to make these devices smaller, longer lasting for 16 days, and more accurate. As more companies develop systems with unique features, patients will be able to choose the product with features that best fit their needs.
The Barbara Davis Center clinical research teams are doing research on several Artificial Pancreas systems currently in development. This gives patients the unique opportunity to participate in these important studies and allows clinical researchers to provide feedback to the manufacturers to ensure that patients are receiving the absolute best technology. The research done at the Barbara Davis Center has contributed to information necessary for several approvals of Artificial Pancreas systems now commercially available in the United States. Most of the Artificial Pancreas technology coming to the market in the next five years will have been tested in clinical trials at the Barbara Davis Center.
Scientists at the Barbara Davis Center (BDC) are performing innovative research to understand the autoimmunity associated with type 1 diabetes (T1D), with hopes of identifying therapies to prevent the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells.
Research in Dr. Maki Nakayama’s lab uses stateof-the-art methodologies to identify the beta cell proteins that are recognized and targeted by the immune system in T1D. The goal of this research is to develop therapies that effectively “hide” these proteins from the immune system to prevent the initiation and/or progression of T1D.
Dr. Aaron Michels has discovered that small ‘drug-like’ molecules can block immune cell responses and prevent diabetes onset in animal models of T1D. Based upon these pre-clinical studies, he is now working to translate these findings to patients in attempts to prevent T1D onset and preserve beta cell function after diagnosis.
Dr. Howard Davidson is developing innovative experimental tools to more accurately identify “protein signatures” in the blood during the honeymoon period, which appears to be an attempt by the body to heal itself after insulin replacement therapy has begun. This will allow the development improved methods and drugs to boost the body’s natural protective response to the disease.
Additional research studies at the BDC are focused on how the immune system interacts with the insulin producing beta cells and how this interaction is altered in T1D. These combined research efforts are being performed by a collaborative group of outstanding investigators in an environment that combines clinical, translational and basic science programs that is unique to the BDC. Ultimately, the goal of these research endeavors is to better predict, prevent and/or reverse autoimmunity in patients with T1D.
The Latino Program serves around 80 Latino patients and over 300 family members at the Barbara Davis Center and over 80 patients and 200 family members at 4 outside major diabetes centers in the USA as an implementation project. Latino patients with type 1 face specific challenges to care related to cultural and language barriers, which puts them at high risk for poor diabetes control. The program spearheaded by Dr. Andrea Gerard Gonzalez, ensures that patients and their families are given care in a group of families with patients of similar ages and that all care and educational materials are given in their preferred language, which are adapted to be culturally appropriate. Almost all providers in the Latino Program are native speakers and are able to connect to patients through language and shared cultural values.
When a patient is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, the start-up education and appointment fees total $2,400.
Insulin is crucial for a type 1 to survive and can cost $500 per month for children and $1000 per month for adults.
People with type 1 diabetes need to test their blood sugar 4 to 10 times a day. Test strips are needed to do this and can cost up to $100 per week.
Insulin pumps allow a patient to get 1 needle every 2-3 days instead of multiple times a day and can give small doses to manage type 1 diabetes more minutely. The startup for an insulin pump can be up to $6,500. Supplies for the insulin pump cost up to $1,200 per month.
The Artificial Pancreas requires patients to start on an insulin pump and then upgrade to the automated version. This upgrade costs $2,500.
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) test a patient’s blood sugar every 5 minutes and give an immense amount of detail to better control blood sugar levels. Supplies for a CGM can cost $700 a month.
When blood sugars are too high, a patient may go into a dangerous physical state known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis. A hospital stay for this can easily cost $10,000 per day.
If blood sugars are too low, a patient may go unconscious, have a seizure, or in extreme cases, die. Glucagon kits are the last resort to save a patient when they are not able to chew or swallow carbs and sugars to raise their blood sugar. These kits cost $300 per year and need to be replaced every 12 months.
Research at the Barbara Davis Center costs about $1,000 per hour for expert staff and state-of-the-art equipment.
Stem cell research is looking incredibly promising in ways of a cure, but $35,000 is required to produce enough beta cells for one patient.
$75,000 will support a post-doctoral fellow for one year for clinical care at the Barbara Davis Center.
$100,000 is needed to establish a new, groundbreaking research project for one year.
$750,000 is needed for a state-of-the-art microscope.
Recruiting a new research faculty cost $2,000,000.
he Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes is one of the largest centers in the world specializing in type 1 diabetes research and care for children and adults. Clinicians, clinical researchers, and biomedical scientists work at the BDC to find the most effective treatment, prevention, and cure for type 1 diabetes.
The center provides state-of-the-art care for over 7,600 children and adults with diabetes. Barbara Davis Center clinics offer extensive education and support for patients and their families, as well as specialized programs such as the Pregnancy and Diabetes Clinic, the Hispanic/Latino Diabetes Care Program, and a model telehealth program. The Barbara Davis Center provides type 1 diabetes care for Children’s Hospital Colorado diabetes and endocrine program, currently ranked No. 4 in the country by US News & World Report.
BDC research goals include investigation of the causes of type 1 diabetes, the early detection of autoimmunity, prevention, and early intervention. BDC clinical faculty members are developing new strategies and treatments for improved outcomes of care, including prevention of complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Investigators of the BDC receive more than $6 million in research funding per year from the Children’s Diabetes Foundation, and other federal, foundation and industry sponsors. Research areas include:
• Artificial Pancreas/Hybrid Closed Loop Systems: Clinical trials pivotal for FDA approval of devices for continuous glucose monitoring and insulin pump therapy and their combination with computer algorithms designed to auto adjust insulin delivery
• Finding the Cause of Diabetes: The investigation of environmental and immunogenetic causes of type 1 diabetes and development of tests to predict the disease
• Finding a Cure: The development of novel ideas and discoveries in the immunology, genetics, and cell biology of diabetes
The BDC Research Division provides cytometry and islet preparation services for diabetes researchers across CU. The molecular biology service center provides basic molecular biology support, DNA sequencing, cell line authentication and mycoplasma testing. In 2019, BDC established the microscopy program providing access to equipment and expertise for better visualizing the tissues affected in type 1 diabetes. In 2021, BDC also participated in the establishment of a new human organoid core to facilitate the study of how human tissues are affected in type 1 diabetes. The CAP & CLIA certified autoantibody/ HLA service center performs studies which include assays for islet autoantibodies and markers of other autoimmune disorders, including celiac and Addison’s disease. This laboratory serves as the core laboratory for numerous national and international trials for the prevention of type 1 diabetes.
The BDC provides an outstanding training environment for developing physician-scientists, clinicians, and basic science researchers. Faculty members provide laboratory and clinical research training opportunities for young investigators from around the world including participants in the highly successful T32 Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Training Program, K12 Pediatric Endocrinologist Career Development Program, and a newly established T32 Interdisciplinary Bioengineering Research Training in Diabetes. The annual Keystone Conference remains the center’s flagship in the area of continuing medical education in management of diabetes, regularly selling out with over 600 participants.

Diabetes is an autoimmune disease that afflicts 30 million people in the United States, about 1.25 million of whom have type 1 diabetes (also known as childhood, juvenile, or insulin-dependent diabetes). Approximately 40,000 people are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes every year and this number continues to rise.
You have probably heard of insulin and glucose, but how do they work? After you eat a meal, food is broken down into glucose and nutrients, which are absorbed into the blood stream. This causes sugar levels in the blood to rise, which triggers the pancreas to make the hormone insulin and release it into the bloodstream. In people with diabetes, the body either can’t make or can’t respond to insulin properly.
Because of this, people with type 1 diabetes take artificial insulin throughout the day to counteract high blood sugars. They take the medicine through multiple doses of insulin every day, either through injections or an insulin pump worn on the body.
While these measures are certainly helpful for maintaining a steady blood sugar, they are not a perfect science. There are many variables that go into diabetes management, such as diet, exercise, hormones, stress levels, and countless others.
Another concern for diabetics is low blood sugar levels, or hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include blurred vision, shaking, sweating, slurred speech, irritability, drowsiness, and acting incoherent or spacey. If the blood sugar is severely low, the person may become unconscious or have a seizure. These low blood sugars put a diabetic in immediate danger.
Type 1 diabetes means being connected to multiple devices 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Many people use an insulin pump, which is dispensing artificial insulin throughout the day, as well as a Continuous Glucose Monitor, which measures blood sugar levels every 5 minutes to show trends and reduce finger pricks. These devices are extremely helpful for diabetes management, but often require more needles and devices to be worn. While they usually improve blood sugar levels, these medical supplies come at a huge expense for the patient or family.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for diabetes. Each child who is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes will have the disease for the rest of his or her life, unless we can find a cure. The risk of developing diabetes is higher than virtually all other childhood, chronic illnesses. It is estimated that one out of every three babies born today will have diabetes in their lifetime. For this reason, the Barbara Davis Center continues to improve diabetes care and search for a cure.

You are the most precious, wonderful, hard working girl, helping and doing so much work to help find a cure for a disease called Type 1 diabetes. When you were 7 years old, a trip to the doctor told us that you had a disease called diabetes. I called your dad from the hospital and said Dana has diabetes, your dad said, “What’s that”?
I said “it’s an illness” and he said, “Fix it.” We built the Barbara Davis Center to “fix it” and to help treat and find a cure for this disease that had just come on us.
In the years fixing it, since the day you were diagnosed, we have worked very hard and enlisted the most wonderful doctors and researchers to help fix it.
I am so proud of the work, the progress and great strides that has been achieved in the fight against diabetesmade in great part to you.
After you were diagnosed, as parents, your dad and I only wanted to help you and to assure you everything would be fine. You were a brave seven year old asking questions which had no answers - we only wanted to hold you, love you and tell you it will be alright, but in our hearts we were as lost for answers as you.
The Barbara Davis Center was built with you in mind as our guide, to do the research and clinical testing needed to help thousands, now millions of other type 1 diabetics.
You have been the inspiration, you have been the leader and now you are the Executive Director of the Children’s Diabetes Foundation. It is a legacy in your honor which never would have been possible. The world now knows more about diabetes than ever before.
Watching you as a little girl riding the carousel and reaching for the Brass Ring inspired the Carousel of Hope which we are now celebrating the 36th Annual event.
The treatment has improved greatly over the past 42 years and we are still striving for a cure. Your tireless efforts in meeting with doctors and researchers, always making time to reassure parents and their children that diabetes is not the end of the world, they will still lead healthy, productive lives and there is now so much help available... lots of it... and the Barbara Davis Center welcomes everyone with open arms. We are here to help.
The Barbara Davis Center is bigger and achieved so much of what your dad and I had hoped could be available when you were diagnosed.
