News from K-8 Nouvelles du K-8 2008/2009 is an important year for CdL, a year of changes to further strengthen our unique school. The new organizational structure in place since August, has as its objective, to seek closer ties between the Anglo-American and French sections, and to improve the articulation of curricula across programs, both vertically from Kindergarten through High School, and horizontally within given grade levels. The new organization also gives a broader responsibility to all of us, thus helping to address the continued complexity in our school, arising from our growing enrolment and the variety of programs and activities we offer. The beginning of the year was particularly stressful for our Primary School, with many new children joining the school and the delay that we encountered in obtaining construction permits for the new classrooms, which we only finally received this December. The good news is that the campus team are doing a great job in speeding up the finalization of this project. The new classrooms will be state Continued on Page 2...
L’année scolaire 2008/2009 est importante pour le Collège du Léman, car elle est synonyme de changements et d’améliorations pour notre école. La nouvelle structure mise en place depuis août dernier a pour objectif de rapprocher la section anglo-américaine et la section francophone et d’améliorer le passage de l’une à l’autre, verticalement depuis le jardin d’enfants jusqu’au secondaire et horizontalement au sein des différentes classes. La nouvelle organisation donne également une plus grande responsabilité à chacun, nous aidant dans la complexité de notre école, qui résulte de l’augmentation des inscriptions mais également de la variété dans l’offre de programmes et d’activités. Le début de l’année a été particulièrement éprouvant à l’école primaire, avec beaucoup de nouveaux enfants et le retard pour obtenir Suite page 2...

A big thank you to the teachers, administration and parents of this section for their continued patience and co-operation. We have also begun a major project to update our vision and mission at the school. With this initiative we will eventually involve representatives of all key players in the CdL community: students, parents, faculty, administration and alumni. This is a lengthy process given the size and complexity of our school. Another important change to mention at CdL this year is the introduction of Positive Discipline across the school, driven by Dr Erik Mansager and his team of counselors. The Boarding House is also undergoing a deep transformation, thanks to the new management team in place with Ms Magali Guillaume and Mr Henri Behar and Mr Paul Barrow. The new approach for our residential students is seeking stronger development of individual and social responsibility, while still improving the academic performance of each student. Finally, as indicated in the climate survey that we conducted with parents, teachers and staff last June, CdL obtained strong support for its academic programs and quality of teaching, which is reassuring given this is the essence of our task. We only rated average for communication however and therefore this has become an area of focus for us. The improvements we will bring in this area will be gradual and starting this calendar year. In January we will be inaugurating the Panthers’ Sports Café, a meeting point for the whole CdL community, a place to talk, ponder, exchange ideas and learn more about ourselves and celebrate our CdL culture. Next time you come to CdL let’s sit down together at the PSC over a cup of coffee or tea and chat about CdL and celebrate our successes. Best wishes for the New Year
le permis de construire des nouvelles salles de classe, permis que nous venons tout juste d’obtenir. La bonne nouvelle est que l’équipe de maintenance entreprend un grand travail en accélérant l’achèvement de ce projet. Les nouvelles salles de classe seront modernes et conformes au label Minergie, standard de qualité très exigeant pour la réduction de la consommation d’énergie. Un grand merci aux professeurs, à l’administration et aux parents de cette section pour leur patience et leur collaboration. Nous avons également débuté un projet important afin de mettre à jour notre vision et notre mission de l’école. Par la suite, nous impliquerons dans cette initiative des représentants de tous les acteurs principaux de la communauté du CdL : étudiants, parents, corps enseignant, administration et anciens élèves. C’est un projet à long terme, étant donné la taille et la complexité de notre école. Un autre changement important à noter au CdL cette année est l’introduction de la Discipline Positive à travers l’école, conduite par le Dr. Erik Mansager et son équipe de tuteurs. Nous avons entrepris également une profonde transformation à l’internat, grâce à la nouvelle équipe mise en place composée de Mme Magali Guillaume et Messieurs Henri Behar et Paul Barrow.
La nouvelle approche est de donner à nos étudiants internes une part plus importante de responsabilités individuelles et sociales, tout en continuant à améliorer leurs performances académiques. Comme il a été révélé par l’enquête que nous avons menée auprès des parents, des professeurs et du personnel au mois de juin, le Collège du Léman a obtenu une note positive pour ses programmes académiques et pour la qualité de l’enseignement, ce qui est rassurant car c’est l’essence même de notre travail ! Cependant nous avons obtenu des remarques négatives en ce qui concerne la communication, raison pour laquelle nous allons concentrer nos efforts dans ce domaine. Les améliorations que nous apporterons dans ce secteur commenceront progressivement dès le début de l’année civile. En janvier, nous inaugurerons le « Panthers Sports Café », un point de rencontre pour toute la communauté du CdL où nous pourrons ainsi nous réunir pour parler, échanger des idées, pour mieux nous connaître et célébrer ensemble notre « culture CdL ». Lors de votre prochain passage au CdL, venez vous asseoir au PSC et prenez une tasse de café ou de thé et célébrez avec nous les succès CdL ! With the arrival of 2009 Collège du Léman will be creating numerous, new projects all bringing value to our students and their parents. One of the most symbolic to start with, one which will combine a rich history and a promising future at this school - The Panthers’ Sports Café!
Let’s start the story at the beginning, in 1972, when the Student Government created a mascot to support CdL sports teams, especially the basketball team. The panther mascot was settled upon and represents a majestic feline animal inspiring as much fear as fascination. The name Panthers was to become the emblem of a long line of girls and boys sports teams associated with a history of success. A place of quality was then needed to match the history behind it and also to carry it into the future. So two themed areas have been created in the colours of the Panthers and added on to the “Grenier”. It is primarily a place and a focal point for information on campus life with a warm, friendly atmosphere where students, parents and teachers can get together in a convivial setting. It is also a boutique selling sports articles under the name of the Panthers and Collège du Léman. This Panthers Shop will group together the kit and equipment required for the sporting activities at the school but will also offer several brand name sporting products. A final word on the Panthers’ Sports Café; when the doors open at the end of January it will be, without doubt, one of the highlights of the many memorable moments to come in 2009! If the current “Grenier” was already the trendiest area on campus what can we say about this meeting place of sharing, friendship, laughter, openness and togetherness? In plain speaking, a future place of celebration! Avec 2009, le Collège du Léman voit arriver de nombreux et nouveaux projets tous porteurs de valeur pour nos étudiants et leurs parents. A commencer par un des plus emblématiques et qui sera le trait d’union estudiantin entre une histoire riche et un futur prometteur… j’ai nommé : le Panthers Sports Café ! Si le « Grenier » actuel est déjà l’endroit à la mode sur le campus, alors que dire de ce futur lieu de rassemblement, de partage, de convivialité, de rire, de complicité, d’ouverture…en deux mots ce futur lieu de vie ! Mais reprenons l’histoire depuis le début. Tout a commencé en 1972, où le « Student Government » dessina une mascotte destinée à encourager nos équipes sportives du CdL et notamment celles de basket. L’insigne figurant ce félin majestueux inspirant tantôt la crainte tantôt la fascination était né. Le nom des Panthers allait ainsi devenir l’emblème d’une longue lignée d’équipes sportives de garçons et de filles désormais associées à d’historiques succès…

C’est tout d’abord un espace de détente et d’information sur la vie du campus à l’ambiance chaleureuse et propice à des moments conviviaux entre étudiants, parents et enseignants. C’est ensuite une boutique d’articles de sports à l’effigie des Panthers et du CdL. Ce Panthers Shop regroupera le nécessaire à la pratique des activités sportives au Collège mais aussi quelques produits de marques référentes en la matière. Un dernier mot pour annoncer l’ouverture de ce Panthers Sport Café dès la fin janvier. A n’en pas douter, une date à retenir pour un des temps forts de 2009 ! Bonne année à tous !

Excellent Examination Results For 2007/08 Excellents résultats obtenus pour l’année 2007-2008 Giao Fehr Academic Director/Directrice Académique Yet again CdL has attained impressive examination marks across the board. At IGCSE there was a 94% pass rate. At AP well over three quarters of the students sitting the exam passed with a grade 3 or above while at International Baccalaurate the 96% pass rate was only surpassed by an outstanding total average of 33 points. In The French Section the results were as impressive. For the French Baccalaureate out of 24 candidates, 23 passed, with a total of 13 special “mentions”, 2 « Très Bien », 4 « Bien » and 7 « Assez Bien ». For the Swiss Maturité and Bilingual Swiss Maturité (English-French) 23 students sat the exams and an outstanding 21 passed, with a 100% pass rate in the Bilingual Maturité. We congratulate all graduates on their excellent results and hope that 2009 will be as fruitful!
Une fois de plus, les élèves du Collège du Léman ont obtenu d’excellents résultats aux examens officiels anglais, américains, français et suisses. Sur plus de cinquante élèves présentés, 94% ont réussi les examens du IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education). Sur plus de cinquante élèves se présentant aux examens du « AP » (Advanced Placement), trois quarts d’élèves ont obtenu une note supérieure à 3 sur 5. Quant au IB (International Baccalaureate), le taux de réussite est de 96%, le nombre d’élèves présentés étant de 51 en 2008 alors qu’en 2007, il était de 15 ! Les élèves ayant réussi ce diplôme ont obtenu en moyenne un total de 33 points alors que 24 points suffisent pour le décrocher. Les résultats de l’examen du Baccalauréat français sont tout aussi satisfaisants car sur 24 candidats présentés, 23 candidats
ont réussi dont 2 mentions « Très Bien », 4 mentions « Bien » et 7 mentions « Assez Bien ». La moyenne générale obtenue par nos candidats reçus est d’environ 12,3 sur 20 alors qu’une moyenne de 10 sur 20 suffit pour réussir. Quant à la Maturité Fédérale Suisse et la Maturité Fédérale Suisse , mention bilingue anglais-français: Vingt trois élèves se sont présentés aux examens finals des 2nds partiels en aoûtseptembre 2008, vingt et un ont réussi dont 100% en maturité bilingue (17 élèves bilingues). La moyenne générale obtenue par les élèves était d’environ 4,8 sur 6 alors qu’une moyenne générale de 4 sur 6 est requise pour réussir et être accepté dans toutes les universités. Nous félicitons tous nos candidats pour leur performance et espérons que l’année 2009 soit tout aussi fructueuse!

Nouvelles du Second cycle
‘Riding the wave’ strikes home as an apt description of the current high school mode! A ‘high’ was created by the success of the IGCSE and AP students in their exams last summer and most notably the first full cohort of IB students gaining 48 out of a possible 50 diplomas! This set the scene for the re-launch of the new school year in August when 135 new students and 8 new teachers joined the high school, which maintained its roll at 545 students. Changes in our organization have been afoot! One change of immediate impact was the introduction of ‘Discovery Week’, an opportunity for students to participate in one of a diverse range of programmes – Robotics, Wolves on the Côte d’Azur, Life Sports and Great Experiments in Physics to name but a few. Students discovered not only the thrills of working together within an exciting academic context but also the camaraderie gained through the pursuit of new experiences with like-minded individuals. The feedback was highly positive and we look forward to the second Discovery Week next September. With the term well underway and the serious business of studying

hitting the agenda further changes have been put in place with the aim of driving up our academic standards still further. We now have more academic follow-up for students by tutors, examination coordinators to give specialist guidance concerning the range of public examination programmes offered and a professional development day to provide space for teachers across the school to focus on improving practice. Balancing the academic with the extra-curricular, our sports teams continue to excel and so much exceptional talent in music and drama was showcased in the ‘Winter Concert’ and in the eye-opening, mind-expanding, end-of-term musical ‘Zero’, which was written and directed by our very own multitalented IB02 student, Maya Grodman! And so 2009 lies before us; opportunities to be grasped, academic achievement to strive for and all round commitment and satisfaction to be savored. We encourage all students to look forward to the New Year with optimism and drive, such that they continue to live their high school experience with intensity both within the classroom and without. CDL physicists question experts at CERN about the origin of the Universe! and the latest experiments at CERN using the LHC to discover the elusive Higgs Boson.
By Jiwan Park, IGCSE 2 student What are the three smallest particles needed to build all visible matter? What is the Universe, and how old is it? What is the Universe made out of? And finally, does anyone know the answer to these questions? To answer some of these questions and others, 104 physicists from CdL, from both English and French programs, went to CERN to participate in two lectures as part of the Insight Lectures promoting female scientists. The first lecture given by Professor Felicitas Pauss, Head of Particle Physics at ETH Zurich, was about the archaeology of the Universe. Deux jours de travail sérieux ponctués par un délicieux moment de convivialité assouvissant les gosiers les plus délicats. Il est certes difficile en quelques lignes de ressortir les moments forts vécus en cette première partie d’année scolaire. Toutefois, la Semaine de la Découverte en restera l’un d’eux. The second lecture by Professor Licia Verde was on ‘The Dark Side of the Universe’. She introduced herself briefly and gave a detailed speech on the Dark Matter, Dark Energy and the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation, which are her research interests. Although the CdL physicists had countless questions, time did not allow each and everyone to get a chance to question the two distinguished experts. Still, they could end the special day at CERN with the knowledge that their physics had improved and they were able to take away many questions to think about. Albert Einstein said, ‘The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.’ However, this comprehensible world is not discovered fully enough, and here is another incomprehensible thing to understand; you could become the one who makes this comprehensible world even more incomprehensible to understand. Why not try?

Colloque Wright précises. Les scientifiques, étant de branches assez diverses (cancer, sida, grippe, tuberculose...), nous avons pu avoir un exposé le plus général possible; en effet, même si certains étaient plus sollicités que d’autres, toute l’assemblée se sentait concernée par toutes les épidémies.
L’ensemble des étudiants présents a pu apprécier la disponibilité ainsi que la compétence des chercheurs
Dans le cadre du colloque Wright « Pour la Science » qui se tient à l’Université Dufour à Genève tous les deux ans, un groupe composé d’élèves préparant le Baccalauréat ou la Maturité Fédérale et portant un intérêt particulier pour les sciences s’est rendu à une rencontre avec des scientifiques de haut niveau. Ces derniers se sont prêtés au jeu des questions réponses avec les étudiants qui ont ainsi pu satisfaire une partie de leur curiosité. Le thème débattu cette année portait sur les grandes épidémies. L’ensemble des étudiants présents a pu apprécier la disponibilité ainsi que la compétence des chercheurs qui ont su faire partager leur passion. Ci-joint deux exemples des impressions retenues par les élèves : “l’organisation du colloque était très professionnelle. Quand je suis arrivé je m’attendais à une sorte de grand exposé oral agrémenté de vidéos et d’images permettant d’illustrer les commentaires des scientifiques. En réalité nous avons pu poser toutes les questions que nous avons voulue. Les explications étaient relativement claires et

D’ailleurs beaucoup d’entre nous sont allés voir les scientifiques pour les remercier et leur poser quelques questions privées. Et comme on dit, « après l’effort, le réconfort », le goûter en fut la récompense !” Alexis 17 ans “J’ai trouvé que ces conférences étaient très intéressantes. J’ai participé à trois d’entre elles en plus de l’après-midi réservée aux collégiens. J’en suis ressortie avec plus de connaissances. Ce qui était agréable c’est, qu’en plus de traiter des thèmes d’actualité, le vocabulaire était à la portée de tout auditeur. Il n’est pas si fréquent que des conférenciers désirent nous exposer leurs passions et qu’elles soient si bien vulgarisées. Je reviendrai dans deux ans pour découvrir de nouveaux horizons. 13th Annual Schools and Colleges Convention, Disneyland Paris Janet Barrow Business Studies Teacher Each year CdL students taking Business Studies courses participate in the Annual Schools and Colleges Convention that takes place at Disneyland Paris. In the last week of November thirty-three students from CdL travelled by train from Geneva to Paris in order to take part. We were one of over a hundred schools participating from throughout Europe, with a total of over a thousand students on site. For three days the marketing theory that students are learning in the classroom with Mrs Barrow and Mrs Benton is put into the real-life context of Disney’s own problems, business strategy and decisions. Students were determined to experience the full thrills of the park as well as doing their own primary research and attending seminars. They arrived back exhausted and complete with many varieties of Mickey

Mouse memorabilia of dubious future use, proving that without doubt Disney are masters of the marketing process! In the final week of school each group will do Power Point presentations of their field research. The grand finale will be on the last day of school when there will be a competition for the best TV advertisement compiled by the groups.

Climbing Mountains…
Escalader les montagnes… Contrary to what the acronym might suggest, K8 is not the last Himalayan summit to conquer. Although it is a mountain, being the collective group of Kindergarten, Primary School (grades 1 to 5) and Middle School (grades 6 to 8) full of life, activities, laughter and screams! Each level, under the leadership of motivated professionals, offers not only a high quality curriculum, but rich and varied activities, leading your children on the path to excellence and success. Not to forget all of the conscientious and dedicated teachers who are the real technicians of this journey and without whom nothing could happen. These are the sherpas of our mountain. With the teachers, we have taken the first steps towards more consistent programmes and practices, from our base camp to summit peak. Our work has been focused on the teaching of French, or English, as a foreign

As with any expedition, ours is obviously fraught with pitfalls, bridges may need to be built above raging torrents and precautions taken to avoid falling into open crevasses. Fortunately, our path is punctuated with breaks for relaxation and comfort, organised with warmth and good humour by the Parents Students Association! We do everything to lead your children, our students, to maximise their potential in all domains of their development and to become enlightened citizens of the world. Like all explorers, we set our goal to reach the summit, which is our ultimate objective. We will succeed together. No mountain is invincible. Waiting impatiently to reach the summit, I come down from my mountain for a moment to wish you a wonderful Happy New Year! Je n’oublie pas ici tous les enseignants, attentifs et dévoués, qui sont les vrais artisans de ce voyage et sans qui rien ne pourrait arriver. Ce sont les sherpas de notre montagne.
Comme tout explorateur, nous nous sommes fixé comme but d’atteindre le sommet, qui est notre objectif ultime. Nous y parviendrons, ensemble.
Avec eux, nous avons entamé les réflexions qui nous mèneront à rendre cohérents nos programmes et nos pratiques, de la vallée au sommet. Je pense notamment à l’enseignement du français ou de l’anglais comme langues étrangères et au développement du bilinguisme de toute évidence.
Aucune montagne n’est invincible.

The “Greening” of Collège du Léman Middle School Launches A Global Le Collège du Léman “se met au vert” Caroline Ross Head of Human Sciences 2009 sees the start of a new campaign to ‘green´ our campus. This has been initiated by the High School Global Issues Group and is getting the full support of the school’s management. An action group composed of teachers throughout the school, students and parents has also been formed and this group is determined to see CdL adopt more sustainable practices. The project gets underway in January with a big ‘reduce; reuse; recycle´ campaign. This is approaching the height of the Empire State Building, which was once the tallest building in the world. Also PET recycle bins will appear around campus. These bins have been bought by the Global Issues Group from funds raised this year, in conjunction with the High School Business classes. 6000 CHF of this money has already been sent to an organization called Water Aid to provide wells and hand pumps in developing countries. There are exciting new developments taking place in Middle School geography, as the first ever Middle School Global Issues Group has now been established. This new discussion based society is designed to allow students the opportunity to tackle and debate the issues that really matter, in our ever changing 21st century world. The group which meets every Tuesday lunchtime in room SL012, welcomes any motivated and open minded students from the middle school/ premier cycle Anglophone and Francophone programmes. The Middle School Global Issues Group is unique in the fact that it has been created by the students, for the students. This means that it is YOU, the students, who are the geographers, and it is YOU who decide how the group should investigate the global matters that YOU think count the most.
The group is currently investigating the topic of the global landmine crisis, which focuses upon the issues faced by communities living in some of the most heavily mined countries of the world. We aim to look into ways in which we as a group can raise awareness and produce interesting and exciting fund raising initiatives, in order to help those most affected in heavily mined areas. We welcome any new ideas or suggestions that can help us with our cause, so feel free to contact either Mr Pitchford or Madame Boisson if you are interested or just require any more information regarding global issues.

l Issues Group En Middle School et au 1er cycle, dans le département de géographie, des nouveautés voient le jour. En effet, le 1er groupe de réflexion sur l’actualité environnementale s’est créé. Ce groupe permet aux élèves de réfléchir et d’échanger leurs points de vue sur des sujets qui ont de l’importance de nos jours, dans cette société du XXIe siècle qui est en constant mouvement. Le groupe, qui se réunit tous les mardis, à l’heure du déjeuner, en SL 012, accueille tout élève motivé et ouvert d’esprit, qu’il vienne du programme francophone ou anglophone. Ce groupe est unique dans le sens où il a été créé par les élèves et pour les élèves. Cela signifie que c’est VOUS, les élèves, qui décidez du sujet qui vous intéresse le plus et sur lequel vous allez faire des recherches. En ce moment, le groupe se concentre sur le sujet brulant des mines anti-personnelles. Les élèves se penchent sur les problèmes auxquels font face les sociétés qui vivent à proximité des terrains minés les plus dangereux au monde. Notre but est de voir comment notre groupe peut éveiller l’attention et l’intérêt de nos camarades sur ce sujet en organisant des événements d’ordre caritatifs afin d’aider ceux qui sont le plus touchés par ce problème. Their vitality is soon compromised by The Others, a group of authoritarians whose performance throughout the show achieves a chilling resonance. Say Your Name, the first and last song in the show, is representative of the brilliance and energy of Maya Grodman’s music and lyrics as it punches and crashes the show to life. The cast of The People revealed an astonishing wealth of singing talent and the musicians played with effortless grace and skill. The staging and production of this musical were managed with real professionalism by Maya Grodman and her three assistant directors: Lodewijk Dekker, Tarun Uppal and Helena Barr. CDL lays down the Challenge ... are you up for it? Louise McMullen Editor The gauntlet has been well and truly thrown down by new teacher, Tony Rudall. He’s on the lookout for people willing to take on an extraordinary adventure as they test their limits and endurance in The Port Challenge, an activity that can be as fun or as demanding as you choose to make it.

The Port (née Castle) Challenge was created by Mr Rudall during his years in Spain and involved running along the paseo, crossing the Rio Fuengirola as it slipped into the sea, waist deep in winter, on to the top of a hill and a sprint round the castle before finishing with a traverse off one of the walls, holding onto window ledges! Primary school children, parents and even a granny enthusiastically completed it and were awarded Bronze Certificates. The Challenge is done in stages
A different version of the challenge continued at Mr Rudall’s next school in Dorset and then at another in Okehampton. Unfortunately, English Heritage banned the group from the castle there so they moved the venue to the edge of the moors and found a real rock traverse! Now Mr Rudall has brought the challenge to CdL and many students have already been awarded Bronze certificates while Coach Pierre even broke 2 records and achieved a Gold! Students, staff and parents who would like to try the Port Challenge here in Versoix can sign up at tony.rudall@cdl.ch The exact route is top secret – that’s all part of the fun but you will get your feet wet so shorts are advisable!

Robert Brady Head of Sports The coaches of our sports team are extremely pleased with the start of CdL‘s 49th season. This is not only because of outstanding, possibly record breaking, first term inter-scholastic results, but more importantly down to the enthusiasm, dedication and large participation of students this year. SOCCER CdL has had a long tradition of excellence in soccer and our combined boys / girls all ages teams, have continued our winning ways with exceptional results. Out of 16 competitions so far our teams have won 9 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze putting us on pace for one of the most successful seasons in recent times.

RUGBY With many experienced players graduating from last year’s powerful team, this year’s main objective was “re-building” and learning. Younger students were recruited and with the team’s motiviation and desire to improve, they have exceeded expectations. They finished in 5th place out of 10 schools in the SGIS tournament and should be congratulated for the excellent effort and spirit demonstrated throughout the season. RUNNING Well done to all the CdL community, students, parents, staff and alumni who have participated and gave their best effort in the Swiss circuit of organized competitions, most notably the Carouge “Run To Run” and L‘escalade Race.
BASKETBALL In the history of competitions organized VOLLEYBALL by sports associations SGIS and ADISR, The season has just begun for our our teams, boys and girls, all age The record breaking Varsity Boys Basketball SGIS gold boys and girls varsity teams. The boys medalists categories, have won more tournaments played excellent volleyball in the SGIS than all the other member schools tournament as they lost in the quarter finals and finished 5th overall combined. So far, this year is no exception. Our school entered 6 of the out of 10 teams. The girls team has a series of upcoming practice games 8 competitions and won 5. Certainly one of the highlights is our J.V scheduled and the coaching staff is very pleased with the large turnout for boys team winning the “Above The Rim” (SGIS) for a phenomenal 17 the first ever middle school practices, with 15 students preparing for the straight years in a row! Large crowds were on hand to watch both our future. boys and girls dominate these tournaments hosted by CdL. Our Varsity boys team has also won the SGIS and will be travelling to Miami during TENNIS the winter vacation to test their skills against some top USA teams in the Congratulations to Valeria CLIVAZ who was crowned Swiss Champion large “Rock Tournament”. The CdL/Versoix club team is also playing well in the Junior girls category with the Tennis Versoix-Club in October 2008 ! as they strive to defend their title as Swiss Champions!

Geneva, Switzerland Football Fun For The Primary CdL football in the primary school has enjoyed amazing success so far this year. The boys’ and girls’ teams seem to be matching each others results and accomplishments. The two teams opened the year by winning the ADISR tournaments in Florimont for the boys and Versoix for the girls. December saw similar results in the SGIS indoor tournaments at the Nations campus in Geneva as the boys and girls played with determination and skill. The teams passed well and scored at opportune times. In the end, both teams again took home trophies and 1st place medals. Bravo! We are very proud of you!

THE ROCK VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT Our Champion Varsity Boys Basketball team had the experience to show case their skills during the Christmas vacation in the Rock Basketball tournament which was held in Boca Raton, Florida, hosted by fellow Meritas school, North Broward Preparatory School. The team played more than honorably, despite the fact that they did not advance to the final round, in this prestigious tournament in which sixteen schools competed.
A special mention of thanks goes to the members of the CdL Student Coaching Association, the volunteer parents and staff who assisted with the coaching and organisational tasks. This help is greatly appreciated and has helped the sports department become a leader among Swiss international schools, allowing us to organise 5 inter-scholastic competitions in the sports of soccer, basketball, floor hockey, track, and golf. Next term basketball, volleyball, floor hockey and snow sports will dominate the sports scene. Parents, family and friends are welcome and encouraged to come and support our teams. Dr Erik Mansager Dr Erik Mansager joined CdL in September as Director of Counselling. One of his roles is to coordinate the various services of psychological counselling, learning support and the discipline and safety of the school under the umbrella of a guidance perspective. Dr Mansager gained his Batchelor’s and Master’s in the United States before coming to Europe and being awarded his Phd at Louvain, in Belgium. He has worked in a wide range of educational situations, both in teaching and guidance and brings an exciting new concept of Positive Discipline to CdL. This system aims to empower students and develop their self-control while raising self-esteem and developing their sense of social and academic responsibility within CdL and the wider community.
Not perfection but responsible interaction we pursue Dr Erik Mansager Director of Counselling The positive behavioural direction Collège du Léman is promoting this year is not altogether new. But the effort and enthusiasm being applied since the past summer is perhaps something CdL has not seen in such measure. Slowly but surely, the discipline structure is changing from one of punishment and sanctions to one of instilling personal and social responsibility. This is being done in a number of ways and we wanted to share some of these with you here. From an encouraging perspective (such as our students’ health) or from a constructively negative perspective (how to manage even rare expulsions respectfully) the following examples highlight the involvement of our whole learning community. We hope to

inspire you to think of ways to similarly stimulate personal responsibility among our faculty and students. Campus-wide Health Initiative – Our campus physician and nursing team, our health educator, Student Government and several pastoral service staff are engaged in efforts to help our students and staff become more conscious of what they can do to live healthily. Inspirational speakers, development of video series, posters, group sessions and classroom presentations will all highlight information about the social, emotional, physical and sexual health of our community. One very practical approach will be the rededication of CdL as a non-smoking campus. For example, we are engaging parents, faculty, staff and students to help us define our campus perimeters so that we all can be assured that within these bounds clean air and strong bodies are the norm. Implementing an Appeal Process – Recently, after the unfortunate but necessary removal of two students found in possession of drugs, the expulsion process was reviewed. It was determined that an appeal process could assure the integrity of such decisions. Such an appeal intends to allow previously undiscovered circumstances to be reviewed, but also to provide a community-based review of those students wishing to return to CdL. Quite specifically, in mid-December parents, students, faculty and administration engaged one of the expelled students (the other chose not to avail himself of the process) to determine whether as a community they were thoroughly convinced that the return of the student would result in our school taking a step forward in endorsing personal and social responsibility. In the end, the student’s expulsion was not overturned. Nonetheless, our process was an effective forum and one we have available should it be necessary again. Visioning Project – With our new administration comes a new energy and interest in revitalizing the grassroots commitment that started CdL on the road to excellence in international education. Growing from a school of hundreds to one of thousands can leave one wondering how to move forward without losing what wisdom we have gained over the years. CdL’s Visioning Project entails a series of focus groups among faculty, staff, students, alumni and parents to look at how we see ourselves now and to what values we intend to hold fast in our bright future. Vision and mission come together in this effort, as well as a series of principles to guide our every action. These are just a few of the many initiatives occurring within our CdL community that give us pause to appreciate as we build a very real and very positive sense of empowerment. Dr. Erik Mansager a rejoint le Collège du Léman en septembre 2008 en tant que Directeur du « Counselling ». Un de ses rôles est de coordonner les divers services, à savoir les conseils psychologiques, le soutien aux élèves en difficulté, la discipline et la sécurité à l’école. Dr. Mansager a obtenu un Bachelor et un Master aux Etats-Unis puis un doctorat en Europe, à Louvain en Belgique. Il a travaillé dans divers domaines liés à l’éducation et au conseil aux élèves, et apporte au Collège du Léman un nouveau concept de Discipline Positive. Ce concept vise à donner aux élèves plus d’autonomie et à développer en eux une maitrise de soi tout en sollicitant leur sens des responsabilités au sein du Collège du Léman et de la communauté au sens large.
Nous ne poursuivons pas la perfection mais l’interaction responsable Dr. Erik Mansager Directeur du Counselling La direction sur le comportement que le Collège du Léman met en avant cette année n’est pas tout à fait nouvelle. Mais l’effort et l’enthousiasme appliqués depuis l’été dernier sont sans doute quelque chose que le Collège du Léman n’a jamais expérimenté dans une telle mesure. Lentement mais sûrement, la structure disciplinaire est en train de prendre forme. Au lieu de punitions et sanctions nous aimerions arriver à une responsabilité personnelle de l’élève. Cela se fait de différentes manières et nous avons voulu partager quelques exemples avec vous. Dans une perspective encourageante (comme la santé de nos élèves par exemple) ou peu positive mais non moins constructive (comment gérer les rares renvois de manière respectueuse) les exemples suivants démontrent la participation active de notre communauté. Nous espérons vous inciter à penser aux différents moyens pour stimuler la responsabilité personnelle parmi le corps enseignant et les élèves. Initiative Campus-Santé - Notre médecin scolaire et notre équipe de soins médicaux, le Conseil des élèves et plusieurs personnes responsables de tutorat se sont engagés à aider nos élèves et les membres de notre équipe à leur faire prendre conscience de ce qu’
ils peuvent faire pour vivre sainement. Des discours, des vidéos, des affiches, des discussions de groupe et des présentations dans les salles de classe accentuent davantage les informations reçues sur le plan social, émotif, physique et sexuel. Une approche très pratique sera le maintien du Collège du Léman comme campus non-fumeur. Pour ce faire, nous allons solliciter des parents, des membres du corps enseignant, du personnel et des élèves afin de définir les limites du campus, pour nous assurer que, dans ce périmètre, l’air que nous respirons est sain ! Mettre en application un processus d’appel - Récemment, après le malheureux mais nécessaire renvoi de deux élèves trouvés en possession de drogue, le processus d’expulsion a été révisé. Il a été convenu qu’un processus d’appel pouvait assurer l’intégrité de telles décisions. Un tel appel tend à revoir les circonstances qui pourraient ne pas être élucidées auparavant mais aussi à procurer une base de discussion pour les élèves qui auraient l’intention de revenir au CdL après s’être fait renvoyer. Plus exactement, courant décembre, quelques parents, élèves, ainsi que quelques membres du corps enseignant et de l’administration ont participé à une présentation d’un des deux élèves renvoyés sur « la drogue et ses conséquences » (l’autre ayant choisi de ne pas faire appel). Cette présentation avait pour but de démontrer qu’en cas de ré-acceptation de l’élève, l’école aurait fait un pas en avant. En fin de compte, le renvoi de l’élève n’a pas été remis en question. Néanmoins, le processus d’appel fut efficace et reste valable pour le futur. Projets à venir – La nouvelle structure de l’administration donne un nouvel essor à l’engagement que le Collège du Léman continue à poursuivre pour arriver à l’excellence dans l’éducation au niveau international. D’une école de centaines à une école de milliers d’élèves, nous restons pensifs sur son développement sans prendre le risque de perdre la sagesse acquise à travers toutes ces années. Les projets à venir au Collège du Léman entraînent parmi le corps enseignant, l’administration, les actuels et anciens élèves ainsi que les parents une remise en question sur le regard que nous portons sur nous-mêmes et les valeurs à retenir pour notre futur. Vision et mission vont de pair dans cet effort, comme toute une série de principes qui nous guident dans chacune de nos actions. Voilà quelques unes des initiatives proposées au sein de notre communauté qui nous permettent d’apprécier le sens vrai et positif de la maitrise de soi. Merci de faire partie de ce mouvement.

ACLA’s Alumni Survey By Alexis Boyer Meyerman “CdL is where I first experienced the meaning of community. The education I received broadened my mind and spirit; it taught me to respect others and myself and, last but not least, it made me understand that freedom comes with responsibility. My time as a student at Collège du Léman was one of the most defining experiences of my life.” CdL alum, Class of 1973. The Association of Collège du Léman Alumni ran its first large scale alumni survey in December 2008. Entitled “Who are you now?”, the survey gathered comments from alumni all over the world about their experience at CdL, as well as their suggestions concerning the current services of the alumni association. Alumni of all ages and of all origins responded to ACLA’s online survey, reporting a very high level of satisfaction with the school and its programs. Of all factors, those ranked highest were the boarding experience, the academic quality, and the importance of studentfaculty interaction outside of class. With regards to alumni services, survey respondents indicated a strong and enduring attachment to the school, as well as a desire to become more involved in activities and events organized by the alumni association.
