Greater Control, Maximum Flexibility The Global Campus model was designed to meet university faculty and advisor needs by establishing greater control of curriculum and educational space abroad. We work with university faculty to design courses that fit your institutional goals, and continually assess our programs via direct feedback from the universities we serve. Our campus locations are selected for ease of access to the local community, both its historic and contemporary culture, and equipped with the technology students require today for academic success. Madrid: Capital of Spain Known for its innovation in art and culture, Spain’s capital also boasts an abundance of opportunities to engage the lifestyle of a true madrileño. Students can spend their days exploring Madrid’s magnificent and historic architecture of the Royal Palace, Santa Cruz Palace or the Telecommunications Palace. Or check out the Temple of Debod, a 2,000-year-old gift of the Egyptian government. Just steps from the Triangle of Art – Prado Museum, Reina Sofía Museum and the Thyssen Museum – students can study the artistic trends that have inspired so many, from classical Velazquez, Goya and El Greco, to Picasso and the most shocking vanguards, such as Miquel Barceló.

Active Learning Close-Up Students in the Contemporary Spain: History, Politics & Society course explore the reasons behind Spain’s transformation since 1975, growing from a modest economy on Europe’s periphery to one of the most advanced and dynamic places on the continent. Students are asked to examine, analyze and comment on the most important aspects of Spanish history, politics and society over the last 30 years during class visits to significant sites, such as Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, and the Congress of Deputies. The chamber where the President of Spain and the ministers debate the country’s political and economical issues is one of the most interesting living traces of Spain’s history in Madrid.

CEA Leadership in Madrid Your Partners in Education Alicia de la Peña Portero

Madrid Academic Dean

Alicia de la Peña Portero ensures that academic policies and procedures are followed and provides support to the faculty to ensure academic program integrity. More specifically, Ms. de la Peña makes recommendations for faculty appointments, helps scheduling courses, holds regular faculty meetings, manages student and faculty grievances, recommends curriculum updates, and oversees the day-to-day academic activities of the Madrid programs. She has been a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language for 13 years, working for universities such as Antonio de Nebrija (Madrid-Spain) and Carlos III (Madrid-Spain). Being so closely involved in Spanish universitys, she has participated in several congresses and has published a number of articles related to the teaching of foreign languages. Silvia Martinez Mata

Madrid Campus Director

Silvia Martínez Mata is responsible for ensuring that all CEA standards are maintained within Madrid. Ms. Mata oversees all educational programs - including short to long-term program planning, products and services in addition to maintaining the financial plan for Madrid. She also manages student services, host institution relations, local vendor relations, program improvements, and staff. Ms. Mata was born in Cádiz, South of Spain, but has always had close contact with the American culture and the English language. She has studied and worked in Spain, England and Canada in the fields of Administration, Tourism and Study Abroad. Before joining CEA in June 2002, Ms. Mata worked at the North American Universities and Institutions Centre at the University of Alcalá de Henares for two years. Silvia.Martinez@GoWithCEA.com

Faculty Snapshot: Your Local Colleagues

CEA’s Connections to the City CEA’s academic and professional networks in Madrid support student integration into Spanish culture through conversation exchanges, out-of-class visits to significant Spanish landmarks and historical sites, and CEA-organized cultural activities. The Global Campus in Madrid also offers a unique hybrid program, allowing students the opportunity to take additional courses on a Spanish campus, Antonio de Nebrija University. Madrid staff and faculty contribute a wide contact network in the city and country that helps students incorporate their cultural experiences with their course objectives through class visits and student research projects. Oscar Martínez-Tapia has been teaching politics for a number of years at various American universities (UC Irvine and Harvard University in the U.S. and Saint Louis and Suffolk Universities abroad programs in Madrid) and Spanish universities (Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Cesma School of Business). He currently teaches Terrorism & Global Security at the Global Campus in Madrid. In his course, students participate in case studies, simulations and roleplaying to explore the challenges members of the diplomatic, communications, security and intelligence communities face in the daily struggle against the current global threat of terrorism. Mr. Martinez-Tapia will soon obtain his PhD in Political Science from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, where he also obtained his undergraduate degree in Political Science in 1997. He received his MA in International Relations from the University of Manchester (UK) in 2000. He has conducted research at the University of Lund (Sweden), The University of California at Irvine, Harvard University, and the Advanced Center for Social Sciences at the Juan March Institute in Madrid.
