Building Global Competence Dear colleague, If higher education is to be effective today, learning environments must reflect the reality that globalization does, indeed, touch studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lives and shape their future career opportunities. We developed the Global Campus model six years ago to demonstrate that reality, as well as illuminate the growing need to recognize that one educational model is not enough for todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s diverse student population. We believe our Global Campuses offer a relevant alternative to direct enrollment options available through foreign institutions, as well as increased cost control, program flexibility and academic oversight in comparison to more mainstream international study centers. Connecting Students to International Higher Education CEA Global Education recognizes the growing needs students and universities face in today's economy, which is why we've spent the last 15 years focused on building study abroad programs that offer choices, rather than unsuccessfully attempt to shoehorn students into a one-size-fits-all curriculum. CEA Global Campus: Greater Control, More Flexibility CEA created the Global Campus model to meet university faculty and advisor needs by establishing greater control of curriculum and educational space abroad. We work with university faculty to design courses that fit your institutional goals, and continually assess our programs via direct feedback from the universities we serve. Our campus locations are selected for ease of access to the local community, both its historic and contemporary culture, and equipped with the technology students require today for academic success.

CEA Oversight & Assessment Staff & Faculty Our international faculty and staff’s backgrounds – personal, educational and professional – combined with their deep knowledge and understanding of the cities wherein they live, enhance our students’ study abroad experience at the Global Campus. Available to answer many questions, or even just assuage the inevitable first wave of homesickness, our international colleagues are what set us apart from other study abroad providers in the same cities.

Director of Academics As the Director of Academic Affairs, Dr. Paige E. Sindt oversees and actively manages the day-to-day operations of CEA’s Academic Affairs team and provides leadership for global academic endeavors. Dr. Sindt is responsible for CEA’s ongoing relationship and accountabilities with its School of Record, the University of New Haven (UNH). Paige works closely with Academic Deans, Program Development, University Relations and International Academic and Operational Staff to guide the development of academic policies and procedures for all CEA Global Campuses with adherence to Standards of Good Practice in education abroad. School of Record:

University of New Haven The University of New Haven (UNH) acts as the School of Record for all Global Campuses. Global Campus courses are designed in conjunction with, approved and transcripted by UNH, which is accredited by the Commission on the Institutions of Higher Education of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (CIHE/NEASC). In addition, UNH reviews and approves all Global Campus faculty appointments. UNH and CEA also collaborate on ongoing assessment and improvement of Global Campus operations, guided by the Forum on Education Abroad’s Standards of Good Practice.

Director of Assessment As Director of Assessment, Dr. Blair has strategic responsibility for reviewing and evaluating CEA’s current learning assessment processes at CEA Global Education centers. In conjunction with CEA’s academic leadership and faculty corps around the world, Dr. Blair leads CEA’s efforts in designing, implementing and evaluating assessment tools and processes for providing improved qualitative and quantitative data on student learning outcomes and personal development in CEA’s many study abroad locations. Global Campus: Fully Equipped Facilities Each of our Global Campuses is equipped with the interactive tools and collaborative technology necessary to students’ academic success in today’s classroom. Each has been designed with consistency in quality, student and faculty support, and access in mind. The advantage to our students and faculty is the assurance that they’ll have what they need to maximize their study abroad experience, be it through one of our standard program offerings, faculty-led or group programs. CEA’s Connections in the City Our Global Campus programs are designed to integrate the local community and culture with course content, taking students out of the traditional classroom and into the socioeconomic fabric of the city. Our faculty use guest lectures by local experts, behindthe-scenes tours, off-campus workshops, cultural activities and excursions to deepen students’ understanding of the host city and culture. By turning the host city into a living classroom, students come face to face with the very issues discussed in class. Students touring an immigrant neighborhood might talk to its residents and even have dinner in the home of a community leader, allowing students to see, experience, analyze and internalize the day’s lessons. As a result, students return home more capable of adding diversity, intercultural insight and breadth of thought to the educational environment of their own home institution.

Students in the Culture and Civilization of Argentina course take full advantage of the city of Buenos Aires, holding class sessions at the most significant landmarks of Argentina’s capital. The course also incorporates an academic field trip, led by the course professor, to San Antonio de Areco, considered the home of the gaucho, Argentina’s traditional horseman and folklore hero.

CEA Leadership in Buenos Aires John N. Hudson, MBA

Buenos Aires Academic Dean & Campus Director

John Hudson was born in Buenos Aires and has lived in Argentina, the U.S., Mexico, England and Hong Kong. He holds an engineering degree from Purdue University and an MBA from Duke University in the U.S. Mr. Hudson brings to the Global Campus a decade of academic experience in Latin America with extensive business experience in global corporations. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in business administration at Henley Business School in the UK, where he is researching the challenges of culture in international business. He has previously worked as a graduate program director at UADE University, as director of the Universidad de Palermoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Graduate School of Business, both in Buenos Aires, and has worked extensively with study abroad programs in Argentina with institutions both from the U.S. and Europe. Gabriela Bittleston

Buenos Aires Program Director As the Program Director for Buenos Aires, Gabriela Bittleston is responsible for day-to-day management including, but not limited to, student services, host institution relations, local vendor relations, program academics, and student evaluations. In addition, Ms. Bittleston advises students on issues related to academics, cross-cultural information and health and safety, assists in management of city finances, and hires and trains other staff (and faculty). Originally from Mar del Plata, a beach community four hours from the Capital City, she has lived and worked in Buenos Aires for most of her life. She worked as a coordinator in the International Relations office at the University of Belgrano for 13 years. Ms. Bittleston graduated in Tourism from the Instituto Superior de Turismo Perito Moreno. Active Learning Close-Up Students in the Shanghai: Imperialism, Revolution and Modernity course study

CEA Global Campus Highlights Each CEA Global Campus offers close proximity to the significant landmarks and cultural activities students encounter through their study abroad program. • Eight levels of Chinese language courses on both the regular track and accelerated track • Located on the campus of East China Normal University, opening the path for more direct student interaction with Chinese peers • Newly renovated 4,600-square-foot facility, including four “smart” classrooms, student computer lab, student lounge, resource center, office space for faculty and WiFi throughout • Located at the center of the ECNU campus, within a 5-minute walk of the student dormitory, and the back gate accessing a street with vendors

Shanghai as a microcosm of China. The city exemplifies the social consequences of change, embodied most recently by the emergence of a new entrepreneurial elite, the small but growing middle class, and the large “floating population” of rural migrants illegally residing in the city. Students visit significant locations around the city, including the Bund and the foreign concessions, the site of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party and the Pudong economic zone. The exploration, on-site discussion and analysis, led by specialists in the history of Shanghai, provide context for students’ understanding of evolving urban spaces.

CEA Leadership in Shanghai Yan Liang

Shanghai Program Director As Program Director for Shanghai, Yan is responsible for managing the CEA Global Campus to ensure academic program integrity standards are met. Her responsibilities include the maintenance of educational programs, student services, staff management, host institution relations, vendor relations, program improvement and support to the faculty. Yan, originally from Shanghai, spent seven years living and working in the U.S., where she ran a travel company specializing in business travel from China to the U.S. Additionally, Yan worked as a Senior Consultant in a leading Chinese trading company where she assisted hundreds of organizations build successful teams and train powerful leaders. Yan holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of International Business and Economics in China, and a bachelor’s degree in International Economics and Trade from Shanghai University. CEA’s Connections to the City CEA’s academic and professional networks in Shanghai support student integration into Chinese culture through conversation exchanges with local students on ECNU’s campus, international student activities, behind-the-scenes tours of Shanghai businesses, including meeting and talking with local business leaders, and opportunities to volunteer in the community. Architectural Perspective course see history by way of Paris’ architectural heritage. By studying monuments from medieval Vincennes to the modern day La Defense, students can study in person how the city of Paris has evolved over the centuries and how its architecture reflects its history and its people. Faculty engage students beyond classroom instruction by taking them to the Palais Garnier, Paris’ oldest standing opera house, and walking them through a typical night at the opera. Through on-site discussion and analysis, students incorporate their real-life experience with the course’s objectives.

CEA Leadership in Paris Christopher Edwards, MA

Paris Assistant Academic Dean

As the Assistant Academic Dean in Paris, Christopher Edwards supports the Academic Dean in ensuring that academic policies and procedures are followed and provides support to the faculty to ensure academic program integrity. More specifically, Mr. Edwards assists in managing faculty relationships, scheduling courses, managing student and faculty grievances, recommending curriculum updates, providing academic advising and overseeing the day-to-day academic activities of the Paris program. Mr. Edwards earned an MA in French from New York University (NY) and a dual BA in French and Economics from Auburn University (AL). His studies for the MA were completed through NYU’s Paris campus. Alexandra Mitchell

Paris Campus Director Alexandra Mitchell was drawn to becoming a professional in the field of study abroad following her extensive first-hand experience as a student abroad: an initial travel program in Western Europe as a high school student led to two university programs as an undergraduate in Florence, Italy, and Caen, France. As a graduate student, she chose to integrate directly into the French university system. There she received a D.E.A. (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) from the Université de Paris-IV Sorbonne (France) in Art History, after receiving her MA in Art History at the same institution. Before relocating to Paris, Alexandra had completed a BA in French and Art History at Washington University in St. Louis (MO). Alexandra.Mitchell@GoWithCEA.com

CEA Leadership in Dublin Darragh O Briain

Dublin Academic Dean Darragh O Briain has vast lecturing experience in Market Research, Event Management, Marketing Communications, Sales Management and Entrepreneurship with a wide range of institutions including American College Dublin, Griffith College and the European Business School. In 2005, he became Academic Director of the European Business School, where he was responsible for overseeing faculty and academia for visiting U.S. and European semester students. As well as being Academic Dean with CEA, Mr. O Briain is also the Academic Dean of The International School of Business, where he is responsible for faculty, students, curriculum development, assessments and course validation. Francis Kelly

Dublin Campus Director Prior to joining CEA, Francis Kelly was Director of Development for the Dublin Business School (Ireland’s largest private business school) and Director of the European Business School, a private institute he founded in 1993 specializing in study abroad programs for European students. He has also extensive teaching experience in Ireland and France (where he lived for seven years) in a wide range of subject areas. His professional experience has made him keenly sensitive to the needs of study abroad students from around the world. Dr. Kevin J.F. Murphy moved to Tuscany from his native England in 1996. His doctoral studies while at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London concentrated on the history of Florentine squares. He has published on Florentine art, architecture and urbanism, and presented his findings at international conferences including the College Art Association (CAA) and Renaissance Society of America (RSA). Dr. Murphy has more than 15 years of experience in higher education teaching and administration of American and UK institutions in Italy. He is an active member of professional associations including EAIE (European Association for International Education) where he is a board member of SAFSA (Study Abroad and Foreign Student Advisorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Professional Section). Grayson Splane

Florence Program Director Grayson Splane holds an MA in Italian Language and Literature from Middlebury College, specializing in the translation of contemporary Italian poetry. She studied in Florence as an undergraduate, and since 1999 has made the city her permanent home. Before joining CEA in 2001, Ms. Splane worked in publishing as an Assistant Photography Editor and Editor for the southern literary magazine, The Oxford American. Upon her return to Italy, she also spent time as an editor and translator in the film industry. Students in the Art & Archaeology of Ancient Rome course take full advantage of the city of Rome and nearby Ostia, holding class sessions at the most significant landmarks of the Roman Republic and Empire. Rome Program Director Anna Felberbaum has lived in Rome for most of her life. Work and study have brought her at various times to both London and the U.S. She is a graduate of John Cabot University, where she earned a BA in English Literature. Ms. Felberbaum has many years of experience in the field of study abroad. She worked as the Coordinator for Student Services at John Cabot University, and joined CEA in 2004 as Rome Program Director. She has directed the Rome Global Campus since its foundation in 2008. Previously, she also managed Romeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main English bookstore and worked as a translator. Active Learning Close-Up Students in the Contemporary Spain course at the Global Campus in Barcelona explore the recent events in Spanish history, visiting the political institutions that play a vital role in understanding the Spain that emerged following Franco’s death in 1975. The Parlament de Catalunya symbolizes the recovery of political freedom and the lost identity of the people of Catalonia. Students tour the building and attend an open session to better examine and understand the political dynamics of the region.

CEA Leadership in Barcelona Ana Martínez, PhD

Barcelona Academic Dean Ana Martínez is CEA Global Education’s Academic Dean for Barcelona. She manages faculty relationships, scheduling courses, addressing student and faculty grievances, recommending curriculum updates, providing academic advising and overseeing the day-to-day academic activities of the Barcelona program. Ms. Martínez has taught Spanish as a foreign language and linguistics at several universities in the U.S. and in Spain, such as Middlebury College (VT), Georgetown University (DC), and Antonio de Nebrija University (Madrid, Spain). She served as the Assistant Director of the Advanced Spanish Language Program at Georgetown University, collaborated with Instituto Cervantes in different academic projects, and has extensive experience in the study abroad field. Barcelona Campus Director Enric Figueras is originally from Tarragona, Catalonia. He taught at Boise State University, where he created an online language teaching program and developed the Spanish course curriculum in the fields of Spanish Linguistics and Spanish for Heritage Learners. He also coordinated the Spanish Language Program and served as the Director of the Undergraduate Spanish Program. Mr. Figueras holds an Executive MBA from La Salle (Universitat Ramon Llull, Spain), a Masters degree in Spanish from Middlebury College in Vermont, and a Bachelors degree in Communications/Journalism from Boise State University. Students in the Contemporary Spain: History, Politics & Society course explore the reasons behind Spain’s transformation since 1975, growing from a modest economy on Europe’s periphery to one of the most advanced and dynamic places on the continent. CEA Leadership in Madrid Silvia Martínez Mata

Madrid Campus Director Silvia Martínez Mata is responsible for ensuring that all CEA standards are maintained within Madrid. Silvia oversees all educational programs - including short to long-term program planning, products and services in addition to maintaining the financial plan for Madrid. She also manages student services, host institution relations, local vendor relations, program improvements, and staff. Ms. Mata was born in Cádiz, South of Spain, but has always had close contact with the American culture and the English language. She has studied and worked in Spain, England and Canada in the fields of Administration, Tourism and Study Abroad. CEA Leadership in Seville Jesús Díaz Vidal

Seville Academic Dean As an enthusiastic teacher, Mr. Jesús Díaz Vidal first came in contact with CEA Global Education as a language instructor at the University of Seville, teaching English and collaborating with several study abroad programs. Currently, Mr. Díaz teaches at CEA in unison with his academic duties. Mr. Díaz works closely with the Campus Director and ensures that academic policies and procedures are followed and provides support to the faculty to ensure academic program integrity. Mr. Díaz majored in Linguistic Studies from the University of Seville and is pursuing his doctorate in the same field, specifically in the teaching of the spoken component of a second language to deaf learners. Juan Ignacio de la Fuente

Seville Campus Director

Juan Ignacio de la Fuente is responsible for day-to-day management including, but not limited to, student services, host institution relations, local vendor relations, program academics, and student evaluations. In addition, he advises students on issues related to academics, cross-cultural information and health and safety. Originally from Seville, Mr. de la Fuente has dedicated most of his career to the field of study abroad. Before joining CEA, he worked for two years at CLIC International House in the Housing Department, assisting in the placement of international students, as well as acting as a general student advisor. CEA Global Campus Case Study: What One University Member Has to Say University of San Diego Global Campus Flexibility and Connections to the Host City Situation: The University of San Diego wanted to create a summer, faculty-led study abroad program for USD students, where USD’s faculty would teach their own courses abroad. USD needed assistance to ensure academic quality abroad by managing logistics on site, from identifying appropriate academic facilities to planning cultural activities and risk management, to ensure their students had the best possible study abroad experience. Solution: CEA worked with its international staff in Paris and USD’s Dr. Kira Espiritu to examine USD curriculum for five courses – including French language, communication, art history, photography and political science – to offer suggestions for incorporating CEA’s signature “active learning” component for each course, including guest lectures from local experts, museum visits and local site visits to significant Paris landmarks. CEA staff in Paris made arrangements to accommodate USD’s facility needs, allowing for classroom space, visiting faculty office space and extended office hours for a later class. CEA Paris staff organized on-site orientations for both USD’s faculty and students; cultural activities including a boat cruise, bike tour and crepe making event; and student housing in homestays, apartments and residence halls. They also organized a day-trip to Versailles, plus an optional trip to Loire Valley for interested students. Altogether, CEA accommodated 50 USD students and six faculty members at the Global Campus in Paris.

Explore the city of Prague while studying art and architecture spanning more than 10 centuries, from the styles of Romanesque through the various stages of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and into the 20th century (including art nouveau, Czech cubism and socialist realism). Students explore first-hand Prague’s Castle and many of the city’s glorious churches and monuments as examples of Europe’s most important architectural styles. Through a combination of lectures and excursions into the city, including numerous museums and galleries, the aim of the course is to have students develop an understanding of art and architecture in Prague as products not only of individual artists, but also of the larger cultural influences of their age.

CEA’s Connections to the City As a part of the CEA Global Alliance semester curriculum in Prague, students take a site- or region-based course as a part of their studies. Site visits, fieldwork, and student projects in these courses take students out of the classroom and into the city beyond the university’s walls. Examples of these courses include Czech Language & Literature, UNESCO Sites of the Czech Republic, Jewish Experience in Central Europe, and Politics of the EU. Through guest lecturers, class visits to significant Prague landmarks, followed by on-site discussion and analysis of class lessons, students are able to incorporate first-hand observations with their course objectives, taking away a deeper understanding of their cultural experience.

Prague Academic Dean & Campus Director As the Academic Dean & Campus Director for Prague, Dr. William Barnard works closely with the senior leadership and faculty of CEA’s Global Alliance, Anglo-American University. Dr. Barnard has extensive academic leadership experience in Prague, where he has lived for more than 10 years. He has experience managing academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in cooperation with academic partner institutions in the U.S., England, France, and Switzerland, as well as accrediting new study programs within the Czech higher education system. In addition, he has worked with multinational companies in Prague to develop corporate training programs for their managers and junior executives. Dr. Barnard received his doctorate in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan, an MA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and an AB from Princeton University in Classics. Sandra Hamissová, MBA

Prague Program Director

As the Program Director for Prague, Sandra Hamissová is responsible for day-to-day management of program operations. Originally from Prague, Ms. Hamissová has worked in various positions related to international journalism and customer service. During her studies, she worked as a researcher for The Prague Post, and after graduating moved on to TV journalism, film production and then to customer service with a major American multinational company, where she worked for Spanish and Portuguese VIP clients. Ms. Hamissová received her MBA degree in marketing and management from the Czech Management Institute in Prague, a partner of the Spanish institute ESMA (Escuela Superior de Marketing y Administracion) in Barcelona. Through the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) network, CEA Global Education is able to academically align students’ study abroad experiences by collaborating with their universities’ international education administrators. With 16 different program destinations, CEA Global Education has an extensive presence in Europe that necessitates close partnership and collaboration with our European international education colleagues. The European Association of International Educators (EAIE) comprises hundreds of members worldwide whose goal is to further internationalize higher education around the globe. Our European academic deans are active members and leaders, and utilize the association’s various professional development opportunities, such as forums, training courses, seminars, publications, listservs, and conferences.

CEA Global Education is a recognized member of the Association of American College and University Programs in Italy (AACUPI) by virtue of our US-based University of Record. Consequently, the two Global Campus programs in Italy are identified by AACUPI as the Italian programs of the University of New Haven. AACUPI’s membership includes 134 North American college and university programs located throughout Italy, providing university-level courses, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as post-doctoral research opportunities, to students enrolled in member institutions.
