THAN HUMANIST

Not completely satisfied with Johnston’s work, Gill set out to create the perfect, legible typeface.

…Some of these letters are not entirely satisfactory, especially when it is remembered that, for such a purpose, an alphabet should be as near as possible ‘fool-proof’… as the philosophers would say—nothing should be left to the imagination of the sign-writer or enamel-plate maker.”

HING HERE ARE SOMET W O N K Y D A E R L A T YOU MIGH HUMANIST Humanist sans-serif typefaces contains typefaces in the humanist sans-serif classification. They first appeared in the early twentieth century. Humanist sans-serif typefaces are characterized by the presence of the hand, an uppercase similar in proportion to the monumental Roman capitals, a lowercase similar in form to the Carolingian script, and an overall more organic structure. Humanist sans-serif typefaces frequently have a true italic rather than a sloped roman.

HISTORY Gill Sans is a sans-serif typeface designed by Eric Gill. The original design appeared in 1926. Gill Sans was later released in 1928 by Monotype Corporation, this was followed by the Perpetua and Joanna designs. It is belong to Humanist Sans. Were it not for Stanley Morison, typographic consultant to Monotype in the early 1920s, Gill would not have produced any of the faces he did. Morison’s commanding personality, lofty scholarship and control over

what fonts were developed at Monotype, made him one of the most powerful forces in modern typeface development. After first reviving several classical type styles to serve as the foundation of the new Monotype typeface library, Morison thought that a truly modern face should be released. He also thought that Eric Gill was ideal for the job. Gill Sans typeface takes inspiration from Edward Johnston’s Johnston typeface for London Underground, which Gill had worked on while apprenticed to Johnston. Eric Gill attempted to make the ultimate legible sans-serif text face. Gill Sans was designed to function equally well as a text face and for display. It is distributed as a system font in Mac OS X and is bundled with certain versions of Microsoft products as Gill Sans MT.

DESIGNER

Arthur Eric Rowton Gill (22 February 1882 – 17 November 1940)

Arthur Eric Rowton Gill was an English sculptor, typeface designer, stonecutter and printmaker, who was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. He is a controversial figure, with his well-known religious views and subject matter being seen as at odds with his sexual and paraphiliac behaviour and erotic art. Gill was commissioned to produce a sequence of seven bas-relief panels for the facade of The People’s Palace, now the Great Hall of Queen Mary University of London, opened in 1936. In 1937, he designed the background of the first George VI definitive stamp series for the Post Office, and in 1938 produced The Creation of Adam, three bas-reliefs in stone for the Palace of Nations, the League of Nations building in Geneva, Switzerland. During this period he was made a Royal Designer for Industry, the highest British award for designers, by the Royal Society of Arts and became a founder-member of the newly established Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry.

BUT DID YOU KNOW...? Gill Sans was designed to provide beauty of form to all printed communication and maintain the dignity of hand drawn letterforms. At the same time, Gill Sans balances legibility and authority. Just as Michelangelo carved the marble until he found David in the rock, so too did Eric Gill sculpt each letterform's anatomy. Gill was a patient observer of human behavior, revelling in the dynamic and changing nature of it. Gill Sans reflects the proportions of the original humanist characters found on the Coloumn of Trajan. Unlike modern type, Gill Sans is not wholly based on vertical and horizontal lines. On the contrary, the uprightness and solidity of each character give the alfphabet as a whole a sculpted quality. Like Michaelangelo's David, Gill Sans stands poised for action, embodying the same tension tht can be seen in David's flexed arms, while still remaininxg static on the page

lowercase are the most similar forms to the Carolingian script in Humanist. The italic e is highly calligraphic, and the lowercase p has a vestigial calligraphic tail reminiscent of the italics of Caslon and Baskerville. Gill Sans serves as a model for several later humanist sans-serif typefaces. An Infant variety of the typeface with single-story versions of the letters a and g also exists.
