A. My name is Consquilla Carey. I am the owner of Affordable styles Hair Salon in Baltimore, Md and CC’s Beauty Institute LLC in Richmond. I am a licensed cosmetologist instructor and a Certified Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher. I graduated from Morgan State University with a B.S in Family and Consumer Sciences. I have a Masters in Education from Cambridge College. I am a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. I have 14 years of teaching experience in the public schools. I have 30 plus years of experience as a hairstylist. I combined both careers and created a beauty and career school.

Q. What are you most proud of in your motherhood journey?

A. I enjoy watching my son become independent. He has autism. He is developing into his own person. I›ve worked very hard to help him grow. He is very respectful. I am proud of how respectful he is.

Q. Let’s talk about your business and the motivation behind it.

A. I always wanted to educate. My business allows me to educate and give back. I give out scholarships to students.

Q. What are some things that you teach women about beauty?

A. I offer a 1500-hour program in cosmetology. Students will learn sew-ins, relaxers, cuts and prepare for the state board exam.

Q. What has been the hardest thing about motherhood?

A. Raising a son with a disability.

Q. How do you keep up with new styles trending in 2022?

A. I constantly educate myself and collaborate with other beauty industry professionals.

Q. Let’s discuss some of the successful things you’ve accomplished despite life obstacles.

A. I graduated from college in three years with a B.S. I opened a beauty school during the pandemic. I have had a lot of struggles financially. I worked multiple jobs until I could establish financial freedom.

Q. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

A. I would love to travel to Africa. I would love to connect with nature and see the historical landmarks.

Q. If you could choose one parenting mantra for yourself, what would it be?

A. I can do anything, but can’t do everything.

Q. Are you working on any projects or upcoming events?

A. I will be an educator at the Bronner Brothers Hair Show in Miami. I will offer a business class to a licensed cosmetologist. I have a nail technology program starting in September. Participants will have the opportunity to become a licensed nail tech.
