Readers’ Choice Awards

ongratulations Weakley County! I am so proud to announce and showcase the winners of The Weakley County Press’ 9th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. I am not exaggerating when I say that The Press counted hundreds of ballots with over 80 categories submitted by you, our readers. Press manager Lynette Wagster, graphic designer Beth Cravens, editor Brad Gaskins, photographer Tammy Erwin and I truly consider this a labor of “appreciation.” We appreciate our readers’ enthusiastic participation in this process, and of course we appreciate all of the outstanding businesses and individuals in Weakley County who have made this possible. Our readers’ choice award was designed to give our readers the opSuzanne Peckham portunity to vote for their favorites by casting ballots printed in the paper. People could vote as many times as they wanted, but the ballots could not be photocopied. “We wanted to do something where our readers could be interactive and involved with the newspaper,” Wagster said. “Since 2006, Readers’ Choice has been a favorite tradition, not only for our readers, but for businesses who serve our community every day.” “What a thrill for businesses to get a pat on the back from people who really like them,” Wagster added. It really was a thrill for us, too. My favorite part of this process has been delivering and presenting awards to the recipients. Lynette and I even played some “regal” trumpet background music as we entered businesses for a full effect. The looks on some people’s faces were priceless – thank you for that! “We are so excited for our winners and all the people who were voted for,” Wagster said. “Business owners, teachers, community leaders, restaurants, it doesn’t matter, everyone wants to know they are doing a good job.” Another exciting part of the Readers’ Choice Awards are the cash prizes. Readers had a chance to win cash prizes for just voting in a random drawing from all of the ballots submitted. Our cash winners this year are Edith Adcock, Bob Hurley, who donated his winnings to a local pharmacy for those in need of prescriptions, and Gail Reese, who donated her winnings to WeCare. Again, we are so pleased that our readers decided to participate. A sincere “thank you” to all who took the time to vote, and a big congratulations to all of our winners. We look forward to doing it again next year!

The Best : The Opera House

S

ince 2004, the Opera House Restaurant has been attracting people from far and near for its succulent steaks, artfully prepared dishes and decadent desserts. Readers of the Press are no strangers to the divine cuisine and dining experience this historic establishment has to offer, as they have voted the Op-

era House best steak and best bar/lounge in Weakley County. The restaurant also boasts two award winning staff members, Brittney Prather Cole as best bar tender and Rachell Fletcher as best waitress in Weakley County. The building housing the business is a renovated opera house built in the late

1800’s and features exposed brick, pressed tin ceilings, and belt driven rotary fans in the lounge area that add to an ambience unrivaled in northwest Tennessee. The owner, Edith Adcock, has created a warm and inviting atmosphere that welcomes everyone who enters and compels them to return again. Her

son Joseph Adcock is the chef, and his talent in the kitchen has earned the restaurant quite a following. Chef Joseph Adcock strives to follow a philosophy of using only the freshest ingredients in his cuisine. Everything from compound butters, to salad dressings, to sauces and entrée items are made by hand. The Opera House has come to be best known for its steaks, hand-cut, wetaged Black Angus beef seasoned with a special blend of spices and char grilled to order. This goal of perfection leaves no question as to why they have received the Best Steak Award for the eighth time in nine years by the readers of the Weakley County Press. The staff of the Opera House Restaurant would like to take this time to thank everyone who dines

with them. “We truly enjoy being a part of your most memorable moments, from engagements and birthdays to reunions and weddings. It makes us feel very special to be chosen as a place you can come to celebrate these wonderful moments in life. We hope that these memories stay as treasured by you, as you are by us. Best Funeral Home: Murphy Funeral Home

T

here comes a time when everyone must face some difficult decisions when a loved one has passed away. Murphy Funeral Home has been helping people during those trying times since the 1930s. That long-time quality service is credited for Murphy Funeral Home of Martin being selected as the Best Funeral Home in the 9th annual Readers’ Choice Awards. The family-run business has consistently claimed that designation. David Murphy, owner and operator, is a third-generation funeral director. The business was first started by his grandfather, L.A. Winstead, in the 1930s and later taken over by Doug Murphy. Murphy Funeral Home was initially located in downtown Martin and moved to its current location in 1944. Murphy, along with staff members Donna Wilson

and Keith Pettit, said he understands the grief and trauma people go through when they have to make those tough decisions. He said he knows most families are not thinking clearly and he strives to help them cope with their grief. “Whether you want to or not, you build those relationships and it’s a great reward,” Murphy said. In June 2014, David Mur-

phy was inducted into the Tennessee Funeral Directors Association’s Hall of Honors, becoming just the 19th person to be inducted in the TFDA’s 111-year history. “That’s pretty special to me,” said Murphy, who was quick to credit his employees for making the family business successful. “If it were not for the employees that work with me, both in the funeral home and my flower shops, that give me the kind of support I need, none of this would have happened,” he said of the honor. Donna Wilson has worked with Murphy for 25 years, while Keith Pettit has worked as a funeral director for Murphy for 43 years. When the time comes to make a difficult decision when a loved one passes away, there’s no better place to call than Murphy Funeral Home, according to The Press’ readers.

s Maternity stores are becoming more and more scarce the number of women having children hasn’t decreased. At one time, this posed a dilemma for moms to be in the region. Now in the fourth year in business in downtown Martin, the biggest wardrobe dilemma for expectant mothers is now dressy, casual or dressy casual. Moms 2B owner Myla Fuqua said the dilemma of scarcity is what prompted her decision to open a clothing store on Lindell Street in downtown Martin that caters specifically to pregnant women. “I wanted to offer a service that would allow women to have clothing that fit and they felt good in while being pregnant.” Fuqua commented. The store offers new, factory seconds and consigned maternity cloth-

ing. Fuqua said because it is costly to purchase clothing to only be worn such a short period of time, she recommends taking advantage of the consignment opportunities at Moms 2B. “I love downtown Martin. Martin has really worked hard to make downtown a beautiful place and it is very accessible. We have a door on Lindell Street and a back door with a large parking area,” Fuqua added. eakley County Motors began operations in April 1964 as a family-owned business. Fifty years later, and the business is still going strong. Horace Alexander acquired the Ford franchise located at 105 North Lindell St. in Martin. There was a full parts and service department and a used car lot. Horace was a salesman and his wife, Dorothy, served as office manager with Ronnie Alexander as the Parts manager and Max Merritt Service manager. In 1971, Larry Alexander joined the business as a salesman. Weakley County Motors relocated to a new facility in 1974 at 841 North Lindell St., which is its present location. Then, in 1976, Keith Al-

exander started working as a bookkeeper and computer controller and Ronnie moved from the parts department to new and used car sales. In 1983, Weakley County Motors added the Nissan line of cars and trucks, as well as a complete parts and service operation managed by Jerry Berry. After Horace died in 1993, Dorothy and her sons, Ronnie, Larry and Keith, continued to operate the dealership in the same fashion as was started in 1964. In 1997, Ronine’s son, Jason Alexander, took over as parts manager for Ford and Nissan operations and Danny Brown started in Parts sales after the retirement of Seldon Morris, Lionel Wheeler and Jimmy

Wheeler. In 2001, Ronnie’s wife, Pat, began working in accounting and warranty administration. Keith’s son, Justin Alexander, came to the dealership in 2004 as a salesman for both Ford and Nissan. In 2009, Larry’s son, Kyle Alexander, began selling Ford and Nissans. And in 2011, Keith’s son, Blake, joined the team and is now Service Advisor along with Tony Morris, Service Manager and Keith Trevathan, Malcolm Jay, Micky Glissen and David Winstead, Service Technicians. THE WEAKLEY COUNTY PRESS

Best Auctioneer & Real Estate Agent: Marvin Alexander

I

would like to thank all the Press Readers who voted me the Best Auctioneer in the Weakley County’s Best of the Best; I consider it an honor to receive this award. I attended Reisch Auction School in 1961 after graduating from Rives High School at 17 years of age. In 1964 I started Alexander Auction & Real Estate Sales in Martin. I Graduated from CertiďŹ ed Auctioneer Institute “CAIâ€? in 1984 Bloomington, Indiana.

During the past 50 years I have had the opportunity to sell for many clients in 5 states & sell to people all across the United States. I have had the opportunity to conduct 5000 auctions. I have been fortunate in receiving & winning State & National Awards through the National Auctioneer Association & State Association. I was inducted into National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame in 2009, consisting of a group of 145 auctioneers nationally. I was inducted into Tennessee Auction Association Hall of Fame in 1993. I was a Commissioner on the Tennessee Auction Commission for 14 years, and served 3 terms. I have won several National Bid Calling Championships including: 1989 International Auctioneer Bid Calling Champion in Cincinnati, Ohio

1997 All ‘Round World Champion Bid Calling Auctioneer, Calgary, Canada I have won ďŹ rst and second in the Eastern Region of the World Livestock Auctioneer Championship more than once. I have been a part of & witnessed many changes in the auction profession. Auctioneers must be knowledgeable in conducting & selling auctions & promotion and advertising auctions. Bid calling does not make a complete auctioneer. Auctions are one of the leading ways to sell real estate, equipment, businesses, collectibles & every other item that exists. Alexander Auctions joined MarkNet Alliance Auctions in 2013. MarkNet Alliance is a group of 61 auction companies across the United States. Alexander Auctions sell live auctions which are simulcast live over the internet where we have bidders

from everywhere during the auction. We conduct online only auctions now without conducting a live auction. We allow a pre-auction bidding before the auction if you can’t attend. We may sell to someone in California, Iowa, Texas or any other state. Demand is probably the largest inuence. Prices are inuenced by people’s desire to own certain items in certain areas of the country, during a certain time period. The greatest reward to be an auctioneer & in the auction business is being able to conduct someone’s auction & sell their assets for more money than they ever expected. Best of the Best Award for Best Real Estate Agent Thank you and thanks again to all the Press Readers who voted me the Best Real Estate Agent in Weakley County’s Best of the Best. I cherish this honor very

much. Alexander Auction & Real Estate Sales has provided a Real Estate Brokerage & Auction Business in Martin since the early 1960’s. I received my 45 year Tennessee Real Estate Broker Pin in 2012. I received a 50 year plaque from Reelfoot Regional Association of REALTORS, Inc. in 2014. The goals of a professional real estate broker or afďŹ liate broker, is to assist buyers & sellers in achieving their goals whether selling or buying. I try to assist a seller in establishing the market value of their property where there is a realistic chance of selling the property within a reasonable marketing time. I use comparable sales to help establish a market range for someone’s property. No one knows exactly what a property is worth or what it will sell for, however research of recent sales will indicate

the market value or a market value range. A broker’s market analysis or a licensed appraiser’s market value does not mean a property will sell for that amount. Both of these values are only personal opinions from a certain individual. With proper research the value should be relative to the property if you know all the expenses of sale deducted from the comparable’ s sales price. A real estate agent can represent the seller or the buyer. My goal when working with buyers is to assist them in ďŹ nding the property which ďŹ ts their needs and desires. I truly appreciate all my past clients, whether you have been a buyer, seller at private treaty or at auction. Alexander Auctions and Real Estate Sales is ready to assist you in any way they can.

otary International (RI) was founded on February 23, 1905 and the Rotary Club of Martin was chartered on March 14, 1928 [sponsored by the Rotary Club of Paris, Tennessee]. Our club was the 15th to be chartered in Rotary District 6760 (Nashville was the first). Charter members of the new club included officers: D. Walter Harper, President; T. L. Bearce, VicePresident; A.B. Adams, Secretary; John M. Martin, Treasurer; L.E. Taylor, Sgtat-Arms; F.J. Duke, Director; Karl Warren, Director and members: W. M. Wells, P.M. Fitts, Dr. R.M. Little, J.E. Jenkins, A.S. Johnston, George M. Brooks, E.M. Burge, and L.F. Hicks. Throughout its history, club membership has waxed and waned and dur-

ing World War II the club nearly disbanded. Members have always met at noon on Thursdays and various locations around the town of Martin have served as club meeting sites. Martin Rotarians have always engaged in service projects designed to improve the community and through Rotary International to address solutions to major issues throughout the world. Locally, notable projects included support for University of Tennessee at Martin scholarships, funds to construct the Hardy M. Graham Stadium, establishment and improvement of community parks and recreational facilities, and donations to social service projects and activities. Local fundraisers included beauty pageants,

community-wide drives, ham breakfasts, golf tournaments, singing competitions, horse shows, and special celebrations. Martin Rotarians historically have supported youth activities including cooperative ventures with UT Martin, hosting and providing foreign exchange students, sponsorship of Interact/Rotaract clubs, and establishment of youth recreational opportunities. Internationally, the club has joined Rotary International projects related to the eradication of polio, literacy initiatives, and humanitarian relief throughout the world. Since 1987, the previous all-male Rotary clubs have admitted women members and the Rotary Club of Martin’s current membership is a diverse mix and

cross-section of the local community. Two Martin Rotarians have served as District Governor – E.B. “Bud” Pritchett (1956-57) and Norman Campbell (197879) – both were affiliated with the University of Tennessee at Martin. Rotary’s primary charitable arm is The Rotary Foundation and major donors are recognized as Paul Harris Fellows (Paul Harris was Rotary’s founder). Twenty-three members of the Rotary Club of Martin are current Paul Harris Fellows. Martin Rotarians have historically and presently embraced the RI motto Service Above Self through their unselfish participation in volunteer service activities, programs, and projects.
