DCM Our next Divisional Council Meeting is THIS SATUDAY DECEMBER 10, 2016! We will meet at Mozart’s Coffee (3825 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703) from 4:30-5:30, but feel free to stay later as Mozart’s is super lovely when it’s dark! Don’t forget to invite members to come as well and advisors, if they are free! Bring $$ to buy hot chocolate or any sweet pastries.

DEC It is officailly election season in Key Club! Clubs and divisions will be having elections within the next three months. We, Division 24S, will be having our election in late January, probably January 28th! I will be telling/contacting all of you soon about choosing a candidate from your club to run for Divison 24S Lieutenant Governor that we can elect at our Divisional Election Conference (DEC) on 1/28. DECs are held so early in the year because in February is when all LTG-elects go to Dallas for their training! We must elect our next year’s LTG so they can be properly trained! If you already have a potential LTG, please let me know so I can forward required documents and guidelines that must be followed.

Task of the Month The Task of the Month for December: Seasons Greetings! This time of year is all about giving and loving others, so explain, or show, at least 2 ways your club has actively attempted to give joy to others during this holiday season. Remember to put your division number on the front of your Monthly Report when submitting. Remember to write the number of members on your activity sheet. Also, be sure to send your monthly reports to Kennie’s home address– not the Immediate Past District Secretary’s address. Thanks! Suggested Prompts Every month, the District Editor Sophia Tran will accept articles written BY YOU to be possibly included in the Tex-O Key publication. This is a great way to get points for your club. If you are already in the groove of your position, try challenging yourself to do more for yoru club by completing these articles! November Suggested Article Prompts will be found at the Editor’s Blog at http://tokeyclub.com/category/edi-blog/ Anyone in your club is welcome to complete them, not just club editors. However, it must only be editors who submit them. Make sure that: - articles are 400+ words - they are about a suggested prompt or about Key Club - attached to an email as a Microsoft Word document - author, division, school, and article title at the top - at least 1 photo per article posted in Word document - all monthly articles need to be attached to 1 email in separate word documents

2017 CONVENTION: JULY 5 - 9 Why go to the convention? Because it’s the biggest event of the Key Club year! Imagine celebrating the amazing things Key Club does with more than 1,600 Key Clubbers from all across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. You’ll also have the opportunity to: • Bond with your people. Travel to and from International Convention with your district. • Share innovative service project and fundraising ideas. • Learn about servant leadership. • Elect next year’s Key Club International Board. • Hear about our success so far with The Eliminate Project—and how you can help eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. • Discover new charities and organizations you and your club can team up with. 8
District Project Operation Education: National Reading Day January 23rd, 2017 is National Reading Day! Get your club involvedon thedistrict level and in improvingthe lives of kids in your community by participating. We encourage clubs to get involved by going to read to childrenat a local elementary school. Ideally, clubs could raise or collect books by donation that could be read to these childrenand then donated to the school’s library. Get connected with Scholastic, our partner in Operation Education, if your club is in need of books! By participating, your club is on its way to getting a District Project Participation Patch at D-CON. If you get 15 total service hoursand 25% of your clubto participate on this one day, you will qualify for a patch! Let us know you participated by tagging @tokeyclub on Twitter, todistrictkeyclub on Instagram, or with the hashtag #tokeyclubreads. Governor's Project
This year, the Governor’s project for the Texas-Oklahoma District, is tosupport the American Cancer Society both directly, hands on, and indirectly, financially. The title of the project this year is “Cancer Out.” The American Cancer Society, is dedicated to eliminating cancer which is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Personally, cancer has impacted my life greatly. I lost my grandfather to lung, liver, pancreatic, and bone cancer. One day when it was time for him to change his liquid back from his liver, he had kicked everyone out of the house besides my aunt who changed the bag for him, and myself who had been taking a nap. I woke up and as soon as I took a step out the door, I saw the hole which allowed for the tubes to drain his liver of all the liquids. That was the last week that I saw my grandfather. It was hard for me to cope with what I had saw and I still remember it as if I were reliving that very moment. To see someone who you love and look up too so much suffer, is painful to go through. Two months after his death, cancer came back into my life. I went to he doctor after feeling pain for two weeks. As soon as she evaluated me, she set up an appointment with a specialist, and injected me with two doses of antibiotics. For four months, I went to a total of four different specialists, and received two doeses of antibiotics each week. 10
Every time I walked into each different specialists offices, I was out of place, a thirteen year old surrounded by women in their forties in a breast cancer center. For the four specialists I visited, they all evaluated me with a mammogram and a computer aided detection (CAD). For the first two months, the cyst in my breast kept on growing and would not react to the antibiotics. On the third month with the third specialist, the CAD showed that the cyst was finally starting to shrink. On the fourth month, the cyst had finally gone down to a non-cancerous level. On my last visit for the antibiotics, my doctor told me that had I not gone to her at the time I had, there would have been little. that she or the specialists could have done for me. Even though this was four years ago, it still feels as if it were yesterday. I am thankful for all the people who helped me throughout this process and didn’t disregard my complains as just another thing a child does for attention. There are so many cases where people disregard their pain and don’t go to their doctor until it is too late, and the cancer can not be treated. The American Cancer Society, is an organization that helps people be more aware about cancer. They offer a variety of programs that help people learn how to prevent cancer, people going through cancer, and help raise funds for research intended to find cures. With our involvement this year, a spreadsheet will be sent to all clubs containing information of local Relay for Life events, such as locations, dates, and how to form your own team. Clubs may also fundraise, and even possibly hold a hair donation drive through Pantene Beautiful Lengths an American Cancer Society partner. In addition This year’s project will be divided into four categories. Honorable mention, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Clubs will be placed in each category depending on their club size. Honor the 15 million babies born too soon worldwide this Fall by Coloring Your School Purple to help end Prematurity during Prematurity Awareness Month in November. In the Spring, continue your efforts with March for Babies – our signature fundraising event.

The 2017 District Convention Theme is… The Wizarding World of Service! The idea of this theme was based on an adventurous tale loved by many – Harry Potter. The theme will invoke a sense of enchantment and will require a bit of wizardry as well and service will become thrilling for all attendees. For those who have yet to attend DCON, it is a multi-day event on April 20th-23rd, 2017 at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Dallas, Texas. It’s a time for Texas-Oklahoma Key Clubbers to unite, celebrate a year of service, learn new ways to benefit the community, and make memories that will last a lifetime. Interesting aspects of the event include forums, district staff elections, the welcoming activity, service fair, contests and awards, and so much more! Start preparing today, and be ready to attend the unforgettable DCON 2017, a place where we can all be spellbound together at The Wizarding World of Service! 14
House Crest Contest! Howdy Texas-Oklahoma District, Are you the type that’s creative, tech-savvy with graphics, and want to contribute to District Convention 2017? Here’s the contest for you! This contest shows the awesome side of our district by allowing you; the members to be able to contribute to District Convention 2017 by creating and designing the official house crests used at convention. How does this contest work? Use your creative ability to design four creative, unique, and professional looking house crests that will be used throughout convention and to represent the houses that attendees will be ‘sorted’ into. This addition to convention will bring a unique twist and these houses will go headto-head in a battle of the best to see which house will win the most points at the end of convention. What are you waiting for? Here are the requirements and regulations: The application form and (4) designs are due no later than January 5th, 2017 at 12:00 PM CST and late submissions will not be processed. If you have any questions, feel free to email Convention Liaison, Chris Do, at CL@tokeyclub.com. In order to properly submit the house crest designs to Convention Liaison, Chris Do, please submit your designs to ‘CL@tokeyclub.com’ in ‘PNG’ format that include four separate files for each crest design with transparent background. The size dimensions of these designs should be limited to ’20×20′ inches. Please be aware that these designs should reflect your cognitive ability to be creative and unique BUT crest designs MUST incorporate a shield outline/design into the house as well. As a suggestion, you may stick with ‘traditional’ colors and aspects of the original house crests, but overall these designs should be creative and done with whatever comes to mind. 1. Fill out the ‘House Crest Contest’ google form here. 2. Create your (4) creative, unique, and professional looking house crest. 3.
