Brand Navigator 2011 “We define a brand as a trademark, which to consumers represents a particular and appealing set of values and attributes. It’s much more than a product. A key point to remember is that brands are not created by the manufacturer. They exist only in the eye of the beholder, the customer.” —Charles Brymer, CEO of Interbrand Schecter Navigate your way through some of the best brands in the business, listed A to Z...

CEDIA has brought together its most in-demand courses and encourages you to take advantage of these outstanding educational opportunities during your time at the expo.

How To Plan Your Training The following information will enable you to customise training for you and your staff, according to level of skill and area of expertise, and make best use of your time at the CEDIA Expo.

Course Levels Core Courses: Courses marked as Core Courses encompass the essential knowledge necessary in order to undertake CEDIA Certification. The courses relevant to each certification level are described in the individual certification curriculum. These courses make up the knowledge-base that CEDIA considers essential for an individual working within the residential custom integration market. 100 Level Courses: Courses marked as 100 level introduce concepts and discussions where there is no prior knowledge required about the subject being taught. These courses are not necessarily ‘easy’ but discuss a subject from first principles. They are knowledge-based and designed to teach fundamentals necessary to perform as a technician or designer. 200 Level Courses: Courses marked as 200 level discuss subjects to a more advanced level. They do not teach basic principles and are designed to build upon existing knowledge. 300 Level Courses: Courses marked as 300 level introduce advanced design concepts. They require that participants already have a good level of knowledge underpinning the subject being taught. These courses are not suitable as introductions to a subject area and are mostly targeted toward design. 400 Level Courses: Courses marked as 400 are advanced courses and are targeted at experienced candidates. Courses at this level teach the syntheses of existing and new knowledge that enable candidates to master a subject area.

Seminars These are education courses outside the CEDIA Education curriculum. They often allow the instructor to relate personal experiences, through ideas and options with students. CEDIA Education is not responsible for the content or its delivery in the seminar offerings; the instructors hold that responsibility. cedia expo Show Guide 2011

Certification CEDIA Certification is recognised throughout the industry and increasingly by construction professionals, as the established mark of quality and expertise within the residential custom installation sector. CEDIA Certification brings the industry in line with other construction professionals by introducing recognised mandatory qualifications. It also gives prospective clients the confidence to appoint CEDIA Certified businesses and provides the installer with a competitive edge.

CEU Points For CEDIA Members, attending both CEDIA’s own courses and those presented by manufacturers, you can be rewarded with important CEU’s (Continuing Education Units) to help maintain this valued accreditation. Many CEDIA courses at this year’s Expo have a CEU allocation attached to them. This is to help certified individuals meet the requirement of gaining 30 CEU points within the three-year period following gaining their certified status. Please note that CEU points are only valid once certification has been gained.

cedia certification Electronic Systems Technician 2 Certification Code: Time:

EST2C Friday 2.00pm – 5.00pm

EST2 is equivalent to the old Level One Certification. The CEDIA Certified Professional EST2 is an individual with at least 12–16 months of experience and wishes to advance their extra low-voltage career. This person works under the direction of a supervisor, has a firm understanding of what to do and how to do it, but not always why. This person is assumed to have become proficient at most Prewire and Trim duties and is in training in all other areas. As a result, the majority of questions on this exam are “Application” based, meaning the candidate will need to be able to “apply” existing knowledge to a specific problem. This person has completed the appropriate Level 200 CEDIA courseware (or equivalent). CEDIA Electronic Systems Technician Workshop is also strongly recommended. The exam is held at the Convention Centre on the Friday afternoon. The exam comprises 125 multiple-choice questions to be completed in three hours. Major content areas covered by the examination are as follows: • General Technician Roles and Responsibilities • Equipment Mounting • Communications (telephony and data) • Integrated Control Systems Setup • System Verification and Testing.

Designer Level 1 Certification Code: Time:

ESD1C Friday 2.00pm – 6.00pm

The CEDIA Certified Professional Designer Certification is for an individual who communicates with clients and design and installation professionals. Also, a certified designer selects the appropriate products and materials to design individual (integrated) residential systems (including alarm, telephone, cable television, satellite, television, data, audio, video, home theatre, HVAC and lighting control). This person has at least 3+ years of related field experience prior to taking the examination. The exam comprises 200 multiple-choice questions to be completed in four hours. Major content areas covered by the examination are as follows: • Needs analysis (project evaluation, installation criteria, budgets, contractor management and client relations) • Design documentation (generating equipment detail, generating facilities plans, creating wire schedules, block diagrams and schematic drawings) • Project design (understanding needs analysis, using contractors, developing programming and overseeing projects) • Design management (orders, technology, prototypes, mockups, communication and validating system performance). 50

Become a CEDIA Certified Professional CEDIA Professional Certification allows technicians and designers the chance to qualify and quantify what they know and demonstrate that they are committed to maintaining the highest quality standards for performance. Professional certification creates a path for career minded individuals who expect to reap the rewards from their efforts and expertise.

Electronic Systems Technician 3 (Advanced) Certification Code: Time:

EST3C Friday 2.00pm – 5.00pm

The EST3 exam covers the technical body of knowledge expected for an employee with approximately 3–5 years experience. CEDIA’s Electronic Systems Technician 3 Certification is for individuals who assist in the training and mentoring of new technicians, interacts with others, installs, troubleshoots, calibrates, programs remotes, works with sub-system integration and control and ensures that the installation meets the design specifications. The exam comprises 150 multiple-choice questions to be completed in three hours. Minimum recommended prerequisite: Open Cable Registration Major content areas covered by the examination are as follows: • Documentation (engineering documents), repairs requests, punch lists, time cards, work requests and variations • Supervision (OH&S) • Codes and standards (building codes and communication standards) • Installation and set-up (wiring, devices and components) • Calibration and verification (testing instruments, data collection, adjustment methods and verifications process) • Troubleshooting (testing process for hardware/software, power, wiring, devices and component issues and communications).

THX Video Calibration 1 Professional Workshop

NEW

Video is a communication system. As such there must be rules defining how the system is to work. The rules are necessary in order for communication to take place. By way of illustration, if program content is in a language not understood by the viewer then not a lot of information can be conveyed. Similar losses occur in the technical performance of the equipment within the communication system. If the receiver doesn’t understand the transmitter then something is lost along the way. The video communication system is becoming so diverse in options for receiving and processing source materials that often, valuable parts of the content are lost. Often times equipment manufacturers will provide options that are correct but don’t tell you what they are or how to access them. The best way to find these options is to do a proof of performance on the individual piece of equipment. Knowing what might be wrong should make it easier to find the solution. This course will show installers how to check out their equipment before integrating it into a video system.

education presenters Joe kane Joe Kane Productions Mr. Kane specialises in the sciences of electronic imaging and accurately reproducing video signals on display devices. These efforts have been the focus of his company, Joe Kane Productions, since its founding in 1982. Mr. Kane joined and later became chair of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Working Group on Professional and Studio Monitors. That effort in the late 1980’s brought organisation and consistency to displaying standard definition video images in the professional and broadcast worlds. Members of the SMPTE Working Group challenged Mr. Kane to communicate a similar message to consumers, which was first realised in 1989 in the laserdisc format. It was also the start of his long-term involvement in consumer electronics and home theater in addition to continued work in the broadcast and post-production communities. Through presentations and demonstrations, Mr. Kane supported efforts to make the video community aware of the advantages of progressive high definition images. He wrote articles, presented seminars for system installers and worked with manufacturers and program production facilities to further those efforts. There were additional video tutorials in thencurrent video distribution formats as new developments occurred in the industry. As CEO of Joe Kane Productions, Mr. Kane continues his efforts in supervising the design of progressive digital HD displays, working on image quality in methods of digital compression, helping with video quality capability in optical media players, and presenting lectures and demonstrations about the real capability of high definition technology.
