PROJECT

Hobsons Bay TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Argus Technologies Argus Technologies handled literally every aspect of this home that involved power, even the electrical system in this knock-down/rebuild project. Audio distribution includes five zones with pre-wiring for five more, and there are four zones of video. Integration control is handled by Control4. The networking here is incredibly robust, with no less than 47 data points that all tie back into a rack in the study. The system was extended to incorporate devices such as in-wall touchscreens, IP cameras, and various network interfaces for the integration of the listed subsystems. Beyond the hard-wired infrastructure, Wi-Fi was configured to support three separate wireless networks: • • •

Client — for all parent devices, Kids — for the childrens’ tablets, and, Automation — for automation devices that had no Ethernet interface.

Another sprawling aspect of this project: lighting. Argus designed, wired, and installed all 67 lighting circuits throughout the home. There’s an expansive security system, too, and even the irrigation was automated by Argus. The HVAC integration solution was developed by Argus in conjunction with the builder and Control4 and features the popular Brivis system. The home also includes a number of timers that shut down rooms in the right situations. If, for example, the kids aren’t using a room for an extended period, the systems in that room go dark. The slightest bit of motion, however, restarts that timer so the room is not plunged into darkness while occupied.

Argus Technologies installed a complete CBUS lighting system throughout the home.

This project incorporates lots of cool details including a voice announcing, “Dinner’s ready!” to the kids in their study at the appropriate time via a one-button control panel touch. 7

PROJECT

Las Palmas TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Electronic Living Incorporating the latest in smart home technology from Control4 and many other class leading brands, Las Palmas is a mid-century modern smart home perched along the banks of the beautiful Noosa river. Due to the design, the client had little desire to see ‘tech’, so Electronic Living was able to balance modern amenities and technology whilst remaining true to classic ‘60s style. This is the thought process behind the TV that pops up from a sideboard, speakers mounted cleverly in the ceilings, sensors placed discreetly, and security cameras carefully selected to look like lights. Featured as a groovy retro talking piece, a premium turntable is integrated into the house system: Positioned proudly near the main entrance, it perfectly frames the mix of old and new style within the home — it all appears mid-century, but has the capabilities and qualities of a smart home straight out of The Jetsons! There were challenges along the way — Wi-Fi coverage needed careful consideration, since the home’s construction includes a great many concrete walls. The security solutions include a one-touch panic button that broadcasts the sound of barking dogs and notifies any intruder that the police have been called.

The turntable by the front door emphasises the retro vibe at work here.

There is quite a bit of automation at work here. One example: at sunset, all lights at the front of the house turn on, and upon the client’s arrival back home (after sunset), all of the lights at the front entrance of the home will turn on for 15 minutes. This is triggered by the vehicle gate. 11

PROJECT

Advanced Hilltop Living TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Boutique AV This project started with a conversation about changing a room into a dedicated home theatre — and turned into a much larger project. Through a full in-depth discovery, Boutique AV was able to connect with their clients and understand their day-to-day lifestyle patterns holistically. Designing and creating solutions for them was genuinely a pleasure as the clients implicitly believed in the technology solutions that were presented. Charged with a complete home integration project, Boutique AV created this award-winner. There’s quite a bit of voice control at work here, with simple commands tuning the lights, shades, gates, HVAC, and entertainment options. The audio/visual distribution here is extensive, with 10 interior and one exterior zone of sound and 12 video zones. No less than 80 circuits of lighting — some in key areas controlled by motion sensors — and 34 roller blinds are integrated into this home. Security, networking solutions, and even irrigation are just some of the other systems that make this project special, but what’s most striking are the details that make this home a haven. For example, note what happens in the bathrooms: Towel rails are programmed to turn on before and after shower periods to warm and dry towels. Heated flooring in the bathrooms are programmed on schedules to be warm during morning and evening shower periods during winter months. Here’s a sample of what the CEDIA judges had to say about this project: “Excellent documentation, with intuitive, easy-to-use manuals that are critical in this type of installation.” Voice commands control a broad array of systems: lights, AV, HVAC, and much more.

This project also picked up CEDIA’s Life Lived Best at Home Award for 2020. 15

Beach Point TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Electronic Living This beautiful home called for technology integration that matched the stellar aesthetics. Connectivity was critical given the scale of the project and the concrete wall construction, so the home’s wired backbone is augmented by five wireless access points. Controls had to be simple here — the system’s users include the client’s four young children. The integration at work here really adds the ‘wow’ factor to this prestigious home. The Control4 platform allows all subsystems to be integrated together seamlessly via easy-to-use on-wall touch panels (one on each floor), plus two NEEO remotes (one in each main living room), as well as via the Control4 app on the homeowners’ mobile devices. With his Control4 4sight subscription, the client can log in and view and control their smart home from anywhere in the world. This feature is particularly useful as the client travels overseas a lot for work commitments. Zones of distributed audio that can easily be grouped or separated plus 4K distributed video are highlights of this home’s entertainment package, and the CCTV cameras can be called up on the family’s screens at a moment’s notice, adding yet another layer to the home’s robust security solutions.

CCTV cameras can be called up on the family’s screens at a moment’s notice.

Automated scenes are thoughtful — for example, the dimming of exterior lights is restricted to a Monday through Thursday schedule should the family have weekend social events. One-touch functions include ‘Holiday Mode’. Initiation of the Control4 Mokupancy driver learns the clients’ lighting habits and then plays this back when they are away to give the impression someone is home. This feature stops when the client returns and disarms their alarm system. 19

PROJECT

Floating House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Bridger Automation This waterfront home — like many contemporary builds — presented an immediate networking challenge. Wireless connections are paramount since a lot of modern devices demand solid Wi-Fi. Due to the construction of this home which includes steel, concrete, glass, and water, it presented a challenge to obtain strong Wi-Fi signals and routing cables to necessary points. The Bridger team solved the puzzle, and, along with elegant audio and video integration, provided solutions for a broad range of client needs, from security to pool and spa automation. Lighting is probably the key feature to this home as it highlights the design aspects (including all the water features) with a subtle, sophisticated look. Bridger was the sole electrical contractor for this installation (excluding solar and air conditioning systems). Having this knowledge and flexibility allowed Bridger to incorporate all relevant controls of lighting, blinds, curtains, louvres, fans, fireplaces, pool, and pond pumps.

Challenges in this project included providing rocksolid security and proper Wi-Fi coverage — and Bridger met them all.

The automated ‘scenes’ at work in this building are top-notch. Bridger worked with the client to piece together an ‘Evening’ lighting scene that automatically runs each day at sunset. This lighting scene runs for a period of time, then upon the programmed end moment, slowly ramps off all lighting circuits to leave the home dark throughout the duration of the night, to be turned on at sunrise. 23

PROJECT

Stratum TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Bridger Automation The watchwords for this elegant new construction: future upgrades. Originally the house had a lot more technology and features included during the design and rough-in phases; however, it was decided to keep it simple during the final install. This meant the house still has the potential to expand its functionality with cable provisions in place for additional video zones, audio-only zones, and more complex integration. The predictive nature of what Bridger accomplished here is part of the art of the integrator’s trade. Carpenters and masons likely never plan for a wall to be added or knocked down, for example. A quality integrator understands what systems will likely expand, and knows where to place hardware for those upgrades. Another big aspect of this integration: simplicity. An RTI XP-6S Control Processor was programmed to simplify the user interface to control lights, blinds, louvres, audio, and video zones, all from a modern tablet interface or voice control. The key point: the client wanted to simplify everything and not overwhelm the user.

This is the third project on which this client has partnered with Bridger Automation for technology integration.

There’s also something to be said for relationshipbuilding when it comes to this project. When a customer gets comfortable with an integrator, they tend to use that firm as their go-to tech experts. This client was drawn to Bridger as the preferred installation company as the firm is a loyal CEDIA member that delivers high quality projects in the South East corner of Queensland, Australia. This is the third project the client has undertaken and all three have been awarded to Bridger as they know the quality of the finished product that the company provides. 27

Bridger Automation Bridger’s client here wanted to showcase the ‘wow’ factor. With the scale of this build, Bridger was given the reins to submit a proposal for a smart home that fits everything in and appeals to the extremely high-end international buyer’s market. This turnkey solution was designed for the owner but since their field is real estate, the idea was to allow an avenue of sale to overseas buyers in the future. The big, grand open spaces include the largest jetty in the widest, deepest part of the canals here (made for a super yacht); electronic smart glass in the master en suite; a 16 car drive in, drive out garage; motorised outdoor blinds for alfresco living — all of that makes this house stand out from the rest. This magnificent smart home includes audio visual solutions, lighting control, blinds, curtains, automated fireplace, video intercom, alarm system, CCTV, access control, networking, remote access viewing and control of all systems, and kilometres of electrical wiring. In addition to automated scenes, one-touch functions include: •

PROJECT

Forever Home with a View TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

West Coast Hi Fi West Coast Hi Fi had their work cut out for them here — this project is a four-and-a-half hour trip from the integrator’s home base, and that mean that as many remote service solutions as possible would be beneficial for this client. West Coast Hi Fi installed remotely controllable PDUs (power distribution units) in the house, with timed power-on sequences to ensure each piece of equipment comes on in the right order. In the event of an internet outage where West Coast cannot connect remotely, controls have been set up on the customer’s touchscreen to reboot each individual piece of equipment, which is done locally via the home’s LAN (local area network). This prevents the client from having to go to the rack to reboot any equipment. There’s a good bit of automation at work in the finished product here. Some highlights: All common areas (hallways, garage, and so on) and individual ensuites have lighting controlled by occupancy sensors. Lights automatically change their default brightness across three levels depending on the time of day and room (eg: toilets change to 7% brightness after everyone is sleeping, so as not to blind you if you need to use the bathroom at night). Heated towel rails automatically engage when the shower is running (only if the outdoors is below a certain temperature so as to not activate in summer).

All of the home’s systems can be remotely controlled should the need for troubleshooting arise.

Curtains and blinds automatically close when the last person leaves the house, and open when someone returns — unless it is night time where they stay closed and the lights come on instead. The curtains also slowly open 30 minutes prior to their alarm going off, allowing for a more natural wake up. 35

Marine Parade TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Len Wallis Audio This seaside beauty is an architectural marvel, and Len Wallis had to respect that look. The firm also had to anticipate the client’s wishes, since the homeowner had little time for consultations. Other challenges included the fact that the customer was a technophobe, so controls had to be incredibly intuitive, a robust — and highly secure — network was needed for those times when the home doubled as an office. Also, the client spends a lot of time out of the country and requested that the system should be able to be used remotely — and simple to understand by the property management team. A cutting-edge Savant and Meridian Audio smart home was designed and delivered, integrating all electrical sub-systems to ensure the simplicity of control through a true single app solution. Nine audio zones are included, five of which cater for 4K distributed video, including a near-reference immersive cinema space. Lighting control, shade control, security, CCTV, HVAC, access control, and pool control are all integrated within the Savant Pro app.

The client is a ‘technophobe’, so controls are extremely simple — and reliable.

There’s a wide array of automated scenes. For example: Wake Up — This scene slowly ramps light levels in the bedrooms from zero to 90% over the course of 30 minutes every weekday at 6 a.m. The motorised blinds all open at 6:40 a.m., waking the occupants gently. Wi-Fi Shutdown: The POE+ network ports which power the distributed WAPs are scheduled to turn off at 11 p.m. every evening, turning back on at 5 a.m. This is designed to limit exposure to any Wi-Fi radiation while the clients are sleeping. 39

Two Villas in One — 6,000 Square-Metre Villa in Tangshan TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Shanghai Sentiment Electronic Technology Co., Ltd This home is, as the name implies, two residences that have been joined by a common basement. Since the homeowner is a 60-year-old woman who likes to entertain, access control is critical for security. Only approved vehicles can enter the garage, and the home features include a security room safe from intruders. There’s enterprise-grade networking, 5,000 lights, and music is distributed to no less than 48 zones across the properties via more than 100 speakers. The electrical systems in the home — one for the network, another for the rest of the property — both have emergency backups. The network system reaches the enterprise level, covering 6,000 square metres, and allows 100 persons to use the system at once. The dedicated home cinema system is also fantastic. The sound is top-notch with the help of a Trinnov preamplier and Aurea speakers. The special Sony projector provides a great image, and the D-BOX seating system and the Moovia sofa give the owner the actual feeling of being ‘in the movie’ with the motion of the furniture that’s synced up to the film. There’s a number of one-touch functions at work here, including a ‘Party’ mode: the multi-zone music system is readied with the proper playlist, and the lighting system creates a ‘hot ambiance’. The private home theatre is powered up, and certain private rooms are completely closed off to the guests.

There are over 5,000 lights in this project.

The automation and integration in the home is superlative, and CEDIA’s judges say that the work on the pool alone was worth an honour. 43

AVD Australia Pty Ltd The AVD team had a mission here — this is an incredibly environmentally-friendly home, and CEDIA’s judges noted the tremendous solar integration in play. AVD handled full engineering of the electrical and electronic systems with a high-level focus on sustainability. The firm had control of the full lighting design with assistance from Brendan Wong for architectural fittings. The scope of work included: •

• •

Reduction in energy consumption through the implementation of smart systems to operate everything from lighting, motorised curtains and blinds, air conditioning, ventilation, and so on; Minimising heat loads by lowering blinds automatically rather than turning on the air conditioning systems; Creating automatic modes that ensure systems are energy efficient, and; Programming ‘leaving’ or ‘shut down’ modes ensuring systems are put into a hibernation state.

Another concept in play in this building is ‘light harvesting’, which ensures that maximum use is made of natural light entering the space. That demands automated blind and sheer curtain operation based on heat levels.

The building is designed to exceed LEED Platinum certification for sustainability.

The entire home can be controlled and monitored from anywhere in the world to ensure that it’s meeting the high ecological standards in place here, and the building is designed to exceed LEED Platinum certification for sustainability. The kicker? The home performs all these functions using tech that marries beautifully with the design of the space. 47

Electric Dreams TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

The Digital Picture On occasion, a homeowner knows what they want: the sound and image of a truly great movie experience. They just don’t know how to ‘get there’. That’s exactly what happened here. The client had some knowledge from having a home cinema in a previous residence and when The Digital Picture was first introduced to them, the idea of a cinema of this performance level had not crossed their mind. After two in-depth meetings and having discussed the industry standards relating to audio and picture quality and the associated costs involved, The Digital Picture was asked to come up with something exceptional. The result: Delivering a 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos system that delivers reference-quality sound while being completely hidden from view. A BenQ 4K projector brings a brilliant image to a 158-inch Cinemascope screen, and a custom user interface, careful power management and the dark, elegant aesthetic are also part of this winner. Another key to the room’s success: sound isolation. A windowed wall was covered up (although an illusion of ‘shuttered windows’ remains on the home’s exterior), and the nearby bedrooms are completely cut off from any sound this cinema produces. A custom door helps here, too. Equipment racks are cleverly stashed away in a small space at the front of the room, and the ceiling is covered in a brilliant starfield with a deep black background that creates a convincing illusion of the night sky.

And those racks slide out easily for service or upgrades.

Careful work on the HVAC system and some custom touches to the seating (including motorised headrests) make this theatre a “clear winner”, according to CEDIA’s judges. The project also won a CEDIA trophy for Best Dressed Racks. 51

Zene Private Theater One look at this theatre and the challenge here becomes apparent: that’s a lot of seating and a big room. The Zene team was tasked with creating a space that could deliver sound that would rival that of any nearby commercial cinema — and the budget was a bit limited for that particular request. Krix X series speakers and QSC professional grade amps were chosen for this project. These products are usually used in commercial cinema’s VIP rooms, which are about the same size as this theatre room. The client was very happy about the sound performance and he spoke highly on the dynamics of the system. The Zene Private Theater team also had to be creative with sound isolation when it came to a room of this size and budget, and the construction of multiple walls inside this room’s footprint did the trick. The next challenge: delivering reliable power to all the components. Zene achieved this using three individual electric circuits for the rack and one for the projector.

Zene achieved a startling sound experience here, especially given the budget.

The result is a gorgeous cinema with a screen bright enough and sound big enough to provide an “Oh, wow!” experience to no less than 34 people. The Bunker TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

The Digital Picture This client loves to rock — and the concert sound that this room produces when the speakers and screens are full of old music videos is something. The volume won’t bother the neighbours as the sound isolation here is second to none — hence the name. Krix speakers and subwoofers are pushed hard by the Emotiva and Yamaha amps, and the room is able to stay loud for long periods without distortion. During the initial consultation the requirement for watching movies was quite low; however, during demonstration of the latest technologies The Digital Picture was tasked with including a full Dolby Atmos immersive audio system into the room so that movies could be viewed with maximum impact. Next up — the client wanted the widest screen possible. Fortunately, due to the short throw distance for the screen size, a Lumagen video processor was required to handle the aspect ratio controls and it has an aspect mode which allows for all 16:9 HDTV content to be viewed at full Cinemascope width. This allowed for the selection of a bright BenQ 4K DLP projector. All of this need for a big, bright image led the team to ask Severtson Screens to manufacture a customsized deluxe screen using its high-performance screen material.

With all of this hidden ‘heavy artillery’, sound isolation is important when it comes to keeping the neighbours happy.

CEDIA’s judges were impressed by this audio system’s ‘heavy artillery’, noting that this project is one that other integrators should look to as instructional — it’s a great example of getting maximum performance out of a set budget. 63

Boutique AV Boutique AV took the wishes of the homeowners — combining his desire for three big screens that could operate independently and her love of beautiful Art Deco finishes — and combined them all into this masterpiece. CEDIA’s judges noted immediately that this media room, with its fantastically intuitive user interface, clever audio delivery, and brilliant — pun intended — lighting solutions, was as they put it, “SUPER creative”. ‘Mr. Client’ wanted to work from home a bit more, and replicate his three-screen computer station at work (on a larger scale). He further thought this design could seamlessly cater to the media requirements of his two other family members of the home (his wife and son), to be able to creatively watch TV together as a family, whether it be different or the same content. Boutique AV listened carefully and designed a carefully tailored 84-inch Tri-Display AV solution. The family can now individually or collectively watch and listen to any of the AV sources. They can watch and listen to a matrix of options through the surround-sound system or on one of three dedicated headphones which can be individually switched to the AV source they are interested in. Of course, the other challenge here was created by the design and lighting that ‘Mrs. Client’ desired — a build that perfectly reflects her love of the Art Deco aesthetic in a space that never compromises this heritage-listed home.

This project also picked up CEDIA trophies for Best Lighting System and Best Documentation.

This project also picked up CEDIA trophies for Best Lighting System and Best Documentation, and the Technology Meets Design Award. CEDIA’s judges were so impressed, they further awarded this project the CEDIA Global Award for Media Room — this room is, literally, the ‘best of the best’ in the world. 67

1. The lighting in this Art Deco Room designed by Boutique AV not only complemented the room, but added an extra dimension of character which brought the room to life. The judges were so impressed they awarded the room for Best Lighting. 2. The Judges also commented on the great workmanship of the rack and how it has been designed discreetly into the stage. 3. Boutique AV certainly impressed all with this project submission. Every detail in this room, no matter how big, or small had to be considered, and that was evident in the their delivery. The Director at Boutique AV, Reuben Rego says “We are so grateful to work with creative, open minded Clients that truly value the artistry of our work and utilize our team’s collaborative ingenuity.” Details like those pictured indicate why this project took so many honours.

M/Y The Beast TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Liquid Automation This yacht — designed to anchor for long periods — features critical security and navigation system integration along with networking and distributed audio and video. CEDIA’s judges couldn’t stop talking about this project. Some quotes: “This is a really good job of power management. There’s great cable work in this rack, especially as compact as it is. Masterful”. Marine integration can be especially tricky: spaces are tight, and electronics and humidity are natural enemies. In this yacht, living quarters for guests and the owners give a comfortable and private space to get away and relax, while common/social areas give complete entertainment and ambiance solutions. The vessel is available for charter in the South Pacific so it will play host to several guests. This requires a system as discreet and simple to use as possible without compromising any features or functionality. There were challenges here, but despite the tight time frame and the constantly evolving system requirements, Liquid Automation has engineered a truly immersive and engaging system. The project includes five zones of audio and video, fives zones of audio-only with hidden speakers, two navigation stations, a robust networking system with remote monitoring to update and troubleshoot, rocksolid security solutions, and a user interface that’s second to none. The interface was designed to guide the user through the process with the addition of simple questions and prompts. Any delays associated with equipment turning on are displayed to the user, and a countdown timer is shown so they know exactly what is going on.

CEDIA’s judges were impressed by the attention to detail here, calling the project “masterful”.

Liquid Automation was involved in this catamaran’s build from the beginning, and the documentation really shows the complexity of this project. This project also won the 2020 CEDIA Award for Best Innovative Solution. 71

PROJECT

Melbourne Experience Centre TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Wired Life This 100-square-metre space has been designed to show off residential tech to both potential clients and the design/build community. Wired Life decided to collaborate with a lot of nearby partners (architects, interior designers, cabinet makers, light suppliers, and so on) to build on relationships, and leveraged their industry contacts. It’s a real testament to the manner in which the firm has built a trusted network among the other trades. When an integration firm builds a showroom, they generally proceed in one of two ways: either the room feels like a retail space, full of speakers and lights and gadgetry, or it’s more of an ‘experience centre’, hence the name here. Wired Life was aiming to provide a true and extensive representation of automation within a real home environment, to better explain what it is that integrators do and how this can benefit clients’ lives in day to day situations. User controls are a key part of this showroom — it’s designed so that literally anyone can walk in and take command of the space with very little instruction. Whether a potential client is using a smartphone or the sound of his or her voice, the interface options are varied and intuitive.

The space is used to educate architects and designers about tech possibilities — and perhaps for the occasional tipple.

This showroom — built for roughly $120,000 — has given the firm a return-on-investment of $1.2 million since it was completed just over a year ago. CEDIA’s judges said this project was, “a lot packed into a small space, and done very well.” 75
