SONA The client wanted to modernise an outdated system, which was unreliable, frustrating to use and supported by several different suppliers. As a finished, decorated property, running new cabling was not an option. The work also needed to be undertaken with the client in situ, because of Covid lockdown, with a maximum internet downtime of two hours. SONA identified and documented the existing infrastructure, to support the immediate project and to enable on-going maintenance, of the entire system, to be provided by a single source. A key component of the upgrade is a high-performance data network to support all devices within the property, including the client’s work systems, home security and AV. The Cisco Meraki network provides real-time information on connectivity and performance while also enabling remote monitoring of all systems. If any of the key devices go offline, an automatic alert is triggered which allows engineers to conduct a remote reboot. The AV has been updated to leverage the power of streaming services, including new Samsung QLED screens, combined with Sky Q and Apple TV boxes. A new Sonos sound system provides music in 8 independent areas including the patio, exterior summerhouse and swimming pool. The existing 5.1 systems, in the family room and snug, have been upgraded with new surround receivers, supporting the latest resolutions and formats; to minimise impact on the décor.

Future Automation Solutions This smart home is bursting with integrated solutions designed to make life more comfortable, safer, convenient and sustainable. All core technologies ranging from lighting to HVAC, AV and security are seamlessly integrated through Control4 combined with KNX lighting and shading. Future Automation Solutions also went above and beyond to find creative ways of deploying smart technology. The motorised front gate is triggered by car geofencing, entrance to the house is via a digital door lock, while a switchable glass window, next to the front door, maintains privacy. In the garden, motorised deck flooring slides to reveal a splash pool, while the terrace fireplace, fountains and garden irrigation are all controlled via Control4. Lighting and shading features are programmed to operate on a time schedule. Garden and façade lights are on between sunset and midnight, and entrance step lights only activate between 7pm and 6am. Curtains open at sunrise and close at noon, while sheers open during the evening. For energy efficiency, occupancy sensors are deployed across the house. The family enjoy 4K video distribution and 12 zones of audio distribution. As the client requested ‘seamless entertainment’ across the home, the bathrooms contain mirror TVs. The system is accessed through a selection of Control4 in-wall touch-panels and remotes as well as Zigbee remotes; to provide a choice of user interface. KNX keypads are also a default in every room. Selected scenes can also be initiated by voice control, using the Amazon Alexa system. 11

Smart Inside and Out TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Finite Solutions The client was looking for a robust integrated system to improve lifestyle, comfort and security in their new build. Finite Solutions designed and installed a complete Crestron system combining all AV, lighting, HVAC, access and security requirements. Entertainment is an important consideration for this family who now enjoy 4k over IP video distribution, to all TV screens, and a Sonos-based music system throughout the house and garden. The media room was initially a challenge as the owner wanted a 3m wide screen in a shallow room. This was resolved using a specialist optical lens to adjust the throw ratio of the projector. Security was high on the agenda with a requirement for a comprehensive system covering the house and grounds. Heat and motion sensors provide a 20m detection zone around the property. If an intruder is identified, the Creston system will turn on internal and exterior lighting, trigger email and text alerts, switch the NVR to the camera closest to the point of activation and display CCTV feed on selected TVs. The system is accessed through in-wall touch panels, tablets and phones. Different access levels mean only primary users can adjust core settings, such as heating or security, while ensuring ease of use for guests. For energy efficiency, once a temperature is set, the system adjusts heating and cooling systems accordingly. Automated settings combining integrated systems include ‘welcome home’, ‘garden entertaining’, ‘bedtime’ and ‘holiday’. 15

The Curved House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Homeplay Ltd The owners were renovating their home, in Southwest London, to create a contemporary living space. A key requisite for the installation was for the technology to be ‘invisible’ so as to blend in with the clean lines of the interior design. Amina Edge in-ceiling speakers, in the kitchen and living room, produce incredible sound quality but remain out of sight. The shade pockets are hidden within the reveals around the windows and the HVAC system uses discreet temperature sensors. Homeplay used DALI via Lutron HomeWorks for predictable, high-quality dimming and to create flexible lighting scenes. The property has a large window, overlooking a courtyard, where the client requested two sheers: one at 3% openness and one at 10%. As well as aesthetically enhancing the room, they reduce glare and enable privacy without obscuring the views. Control4 integrates all the sub-systems into one intuitive interface, including AV, heating and air conditioning, intercom, lighting and shading. The systems can all be accessed through touch panels while select lighting/ shading features can be operated from engraved wallplates. The intercom is integrated with the audio system so that a visitor can easily be heard. Homeplay has programmed various macros including an ‘away mode’ which turns off audio visual devices and AC and turns the lights into an ‘occupancy simulation’ mode. Heating macros allow the client to set the HVAC in various zones in a single button push, rather than coming in and out of virtual thermostats for each room. 19

Awicon Technologies This stunning hill-top house presented significant challenges in the form of aesthetics, sunlight and humidity. The brief specified four separate living areas including a lounge, with incredible sea views, for entertaining family and friends. The challenge was to create a big screen experience while keeping the stunning ‘million dollar’ outlook. The client did not want to face the internal wall, so Awicon proposed a motorised screen with a projector lift, in front of the window, which are discreetly hidden after use. The media room is an informal environment for socialising as well as viewing video content. As the lights would generally be on, the integrator chose an ambient light rejecting screen combined with an ultra-short throw projector which can function even in daylight. Control4 integrates the AV, lighting, HVAC, security, shading and security. As the morning sun causes direct glare into the home, automated sheer window coverings open and close according to the sun’s precise elevation, ensuring natural light is optimised. Sensors across the hallways, turn the lights on when motion is detected and dim the lights when ambient levels drop. A security system includes CCTV surveillance cameras with motorized zoom, biometric access control and automated gates. The integrator also created a QR code which enables guests to connect instantly to Wi-Fi.

London Mews House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

SMC This period property required a high level of integration and automation to transform it into a luxurious but practical family home. One of the most complex elements of the project was the lighting system; controlling both natural and artificial light. Each of the windows has been fitted with up to three levels of automated treatments including sheers for privacy, blackouts for comfort and curtains to match the interior design. Precise planning and design were required to accommodate the architecture of the property including sloped ceilings, recesses and space limitations, as well as the window alarm sensors. Using a Lutron control system, each room has a series of pre-programmed scenes, combining the lights and window coverings, to create the optimum personalised atmosphere. Environmental control of the property is managed through a KNX system which prevents both heating and cooling systems running concurrently. All rooms have been fitted with air temperature sensors, carefully hidden from view, while heating and cooling algorithms automatically bring each room’s temperature to the desired point. This ensures system efficiency and conserves energy while maintaining user comfort. The master bedroom transforms into a beautifully snug home cinema with a 90-inch drop-down projection screen, a ceiling mounted projector, and in-ceiling and in-wall speakers. Crestron is used to control all lighting, window treatments, AV, security and environmental management and is accessed via a bespoke user interface using in-wall touchscreens, tablets and smartphones. 27

Summer in Kent TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

New Wave AV The owner of this new build was initially looking to enhance their home with an automated lighting system. After gaining a more detailed understanding of smart technology, the brief expanded to include AV, access, security, window treatments, HVAC, irrigation and garden water features. Lutron and Control4 work together to create easily controlled lighting ‘scenes’ to suit different activities within each of the living areas. Automated features include ‘welcome home’ lighting, ‘dusk to dawn’ external lighting and ‘intruder alarm’, which initiates flashing lights. Turning the alarm on activates a ‘mockupancy’ setting, which combines lighting, blinds and curtains, that mirror normal activity for when the house is empty. Rooflights can be opened via Lutron keypads and a rain sensor has been fitted to close windows automatically. Integration with a weather service means a notification is triggered if the chance of precipitation is over 50%. Multi room audio and video is available throughout the property and includes two external zones of 8.1 audio. New Wave AV has also installed a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos home cinema in the drawing room and a 5.1 system in the family room.

Integrated lighting was the initial driver for this project.

The main technical challenge was that construction on the property had already commenced, before the integration work started, so there was no dedicated plant room. To accommodate the client’s requirements, the system has been located within a number of linked ‘mini hubs’. 31

Cornflake The brief was to provide an extensive integrated system, with an intuitive interface, to enable the client to manage his property while in residence or overseas. Ongoing support and preventative maintenance were crucial to the project’s success. Cornflake installed a Crestron system to integrate all the systems which consist of AV, HVAC, lighting, shading, access and security including video surveillance, intruder and fire alarms. A bespoke GUI enables easy control from anywhere in the world via a tablet or phone. A remote monitoring capability detects any faults, or offline devices, and automatically generates an alert so corrective action can be taken. The client also receives a notification if any security alarm is activated. The integrator created a series of automated modes for the property to reflect the different seasons and for when the client is away. For example, the house will appear lived-in even when the property is empty. At night, a single pre-set key will turn off all lights and audio visual equipment. These provide peace of mind for the owner and improve energy efficiency.

Dulwich Town House TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Glo Audio Visual Ltd The objective of this project was to integrate all systems through a single app to provide simple, convenient control of a large London town-house. Although performance was key, in particular for the audio visual components of the system, the overarching goal was ease of use. The Savant Pro system enables control of all lighting, climate, shading, access and security through an intuitive app. This means the owner has complete management of his property whether he is at home or abroad. The simplicity of the app also allows for the creation of personalised scenes, incorporating any of the integrated systems, without support from the integrator. Selecting ‘away mode’ places the lighting on an astronomical timer and adjusts the temperature of the house according to a pre-set maximum/minimum. ‘Bedtime’, for the children, turns off all lights and AV and closes the blinds.

Although performance was key, the overarching goal was ease of use.

As the rear of the property is entirely glass, Glo specified Lutron performance fabrics for the window treatments which reject heat. When activated, they descend in a straight line, fully synchronised. Glo worked closely with the architect to create a luxurious lighting experience, throughout the property, taking considerable care over colour temperature and CRI match. High-quality audio is distributed to 20 separate zones while 4K video can be accessed, from multiple sources, on all screens. When the video door entry rings, the client can communicate via two-way audio through the app. If the alarm is activated, external and ground floor lights switch on and a push notification is sent to the app. 39

Cinema Lusso Creating this striking room during the COVID-19 pandemic was a huge challenge — with UK manufacturing shut, it was impossible to get the triangle design CNC-cut, as planned. The lead fabricator had to move in with one of Cinema Lusso’s directors during the build, so he could work safely in isolation on the site, when lockdown conditions allowed. This meant that all the triangles were cut by hand on site. Each of them can be easily removed and repaired in the event of being damaged. The client wanted the room to be able to comfortably sit six adults, plus children. An inset floor cushion was used to increase the capacity for occasional use. Budget didn’t allow for a bespoke screen, so Cinema Lusso were limited to off-the-shelf sizes. A 100in screen was chosen, which meant there was a small amount of wiggle room with the seat positioning to create the ideal viewing angle. A high proportion of content watched in the room would have a native 2.4:1 aspect ratio, so a Sim2 Domino 4 projector was used, thanks to its compact size, which allowed it to be comfortably placed slightly further back in the room than many other projectors with similar throw ratios. Since the installation, the client has only watched one movie which was not in the 2.4:1 aspect ratio – The Dark Knight, filmed for IMAX. As the variable ratio provided a challenge for the 2.4:1 screen, after a discussion with the client, a ‘Batman Button’ was added to the remote, which locks the ratio to 2.4:1. 45

Cyberhomes The client wanted a redesign of their existing media room to watch movies and music videos, as well as play games. In the brief, the tech had to support the latest reference quality audio and video formats, as the room would also act as somewhere to screen music videos for guests. Design-wise, the room had to combine the functional look of a studio with a relaxing cinema environment. One of the requests was to include a pair of highperformance front speakers to complement the décor and make them a very visual part of the room. The main challenge was to create a synergy between the different elements of the room to create a visual experience with carefully chosen AV and acoustic products, but with a relaxing, yet funky vibe. A Dolby Atmos 5.2.4 speaker configuration was installed and Meridian Audio was chosen, as it met with the client’s expectations for high resolution audio and iconic speaker designs. A pair of DSP7200SE speakers sit either side of a large, acoustically transparent projector screen, and a sonically-matched DSP5000HCSE centre speaker was fitted directly behind the screen. Sub-bass was provided by two in-room subwoofers, producing optimised bass coverage in the main listening position. For the two surrounds, discreet Meridian active in-wall speakers were installed, with active in-ceiling speakers for Atmos height. A Sony VPL-VW870 laser projector and a CIW (Constant Width) 16:9 ratio screen with ample brightness were chosen. The lighting design included adding an ambient glow to the acoustic panels and projector screen, with accent downlights highlighting individual room features, such as the front floor-standing speakers and corner bass traps. 49

Synergy Technologies The brief from the client was to make “a space where design and performance are in perfect harmony”, so that is exactly what Synergy set out to achieve, handling both the technical and the design aspects of this home cinema project. High-performance immersive audio was one of the key requirements, so the integrators specified a Bowers & Wilkins CI 800 Diamond Series system with McIntosh electronics, including a Trinnov Altitude 16 processor to capitalise on its superlative processing and calibration capabilities. A 9.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup was chosen, with six surround speakers and four height speakers. The surround speakers were hidden behind acoustic panels by Artnovion. A Sony 4K laser VPL-VW870ES projector, a 21.9 Cinemascope screen and a 4K video processor were selected to cater for the client’s viewing needs. The customer wanted to maximise the seating capacity of the room without compromising the comfort or the feeling of space for each occupant, so a curved motorised recliner in the front was used, along with motorised reclining swivel armchairs to create somewhere for lounging, as well as provide converging sightlines for those viewers in the front.

Acoustic treatment doubles as a design feature.

A bar counter was included, as the room would not only be used for watching movies, but also for friends to gather for live sport and enjoy music videos. Large Italian bar stools, with generous back and arm support, provided additional seating. An automation and lighting system ensured the environment matched the desired mood. 53

Big Cinema, Small Space TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

BrownHen Solutions BrownHen was asked by the client to come up with ideas for how a relatively small space in their new home could be transformed into a cinema room. The customer was looking for a room that gave the impression to anyone in it that it was much more than just somewhere for watching a film — it had to give an overall feeling of excellence. BrownHen designed a solution with equal consideration to all aspects including but not limited to AV, lighting, control and comfort. To achieve this within the modest budget, their overall solution really did need to deliver more than the sum of each part! The client wanted the room to look like any other from the outside, so that when the door opened, it came as a complete surprise to any guests. It also had to feel intimate when just a couple of people were watching a film, but also support a gathering of up to 10. The challenges of including 10 seats in such a limited space were discussed with the client at length and it was agreed that other elements could be compromised to achieve this. The outcome delighted the customer “I must confess I was slightly wary of squeezing a proper cinema concept into a relatively small space. I thought the visuals could be overwhelming and the acoustics virtually impossible. However, the design you adopted, and the equipment specified is sheer genius. I love the fact that we can hear the subtleties of speech as well as the jaw-dropping, through-body bass when needed for action. The experience is totally immersive!” 57

Die Zwei – Heimkino GmbH The client already had a home cinema setup integrated into his living room, but then decided he wanted to have a dedicated home cinema room. His plan was to add an extension to his house for it. Die Zwei were asked to consult right from the beginning of the project, working with an architect and third-party construction companies. As the customer lived over 400 miles away from where Die Zwei are based, the plan was to use local construction companies they could orchestrate remotely. The customer had an audiophile setup for music in his living room and wanted uncompromised, “in-the-face” cinema sound in his new cinema room. He also requested that the image should be as large as possible within the limits of the room. He was keen for a clean and minimalist design but wanted the room to look cosy. A Crestron control system with a wall 17" wall touchscreen and a TSR-310 remote control with a custom-build user interface was installed providing a balance between automation, but also allowing for some manual control and display room and AV system status information. The client asked to be able to prepare everything — movie selection, subtitles, etc — upfront from the foyer with a live preview of the selected media and then escort his guests into the cinema room. In terms of sound, Die Zwei relied on their own brand “beckersounds” for all 17 active speakers and 8 subwoofers powered by 14 beckersounds amplifiers. In terms of screen, the client opted for a curved screen with a massive 10% curve. That required a geometry correction done by the madVR Labs Envy Extreme video processor. Overall, the client is really pleased with the outcome and is enjoying his cinema room as often as possible. 61

Dark Side of the Room A spectacular, purpose-built home cinema, within a new build, for watching movies and sporting events as well as playing computer games. The integrator, Dark Side of the Room, was designated an empty space, with no real constraints on layout or technology, to create the client’s dream entertainment area. As the original concrete room had high, sloped ceilings, an internal room was built to allow the system to be fully hidden. Six different types of acoustic panels have been used throughout the space to optimise the audio. Phenomenal sound quality has been achieved through a Divatech MACH 5 acoustic wall, consisting of 350kg of speakers on the front wall and 14 speakers spread across the walls and ceiling. The configuration delivers high SPL, without distortion, through the number of medium and bass speakers. A Trinnov Altitude 32 processor has been integrated for fully immersive sound. The cinematic visual experience is delivered through a Sony 4K projector, which produces images with extraordinary clarity and colour, combined with an impressive 4.5m-wide screen. The owner requested three rows of seating: couches for relaxed movie viewing; luxurious armchairs for films and games; and a bar with stools for watching sports. The viewing experienced is further enhanced through motion actuators, fitted to the cinema seats and beds, which respond realistically to bass noise. The room’s décor has a sophisticated contemporary style. For ease of use, the cinema is controlled through a Savant home automation system. 65

The company had to install the entire smart tech system across its client’s 1500 sq ft. new build, at the heart of which was to be a stunning basement home cinema. The bar for performance was set extraordinarily high. Having shown the client a range of demos, Meridian Audio largest’s demo theatre was the one that truly blew him away. He then tasked the integrators to match the quality and scale of the demo room and gave them a significant degree of creative freedom to do so. New Land Solutions described this as a “dream commission”. For them, the project wasn’t just about meeting its clients’ high expectations — it was about pushing the limits of what can be achieved with private home cinemas. The only constraints were the four walls they had to work with and the client’s preference for control via a remote rather than an iPad. The lavish carpet, curtain, custom red seating and brass furniture give the cinema an opulent, retro feel, but there’s nothing retro about the tech — subtly concealed Atmos 9.4 loudspeakers accompany the Meridian Audio DSP8000SE twinned behind the screen. Superb image quality is provided by a mirror-mount Barco Loki projector, suspended in the ceiling.

The room is illuminated by KNX lighting, with six circuits for separate scenes, complete with row lamps, LED strips and step lights to lead you out of the room. All are controllable using the Savant Pro remote. 69

De Opera Domotica Converting a client’s indoor swimming pool to a highend, big-screen cinema wasn’t without its challenges for integrators De Opera Domotica. The customer wanted around 10 seating places for him, his wife and his family and their kids. One of the main things to take into account was to provide a screen large enough to watch 16:9 TV but also cinemascope movies. Due to high groundwater levels, the right lower side of the screen was below the water level, so part of the floor was taken away and the area was sealed to prevent water coming in. The objective for this project was to create a designer home cinema with little or no compromise in performance and a sound system for live concerts, football and movies that would achieve goose bumps every time. Cinema standards dictated it would be 3.1xH for Full HD while watching TV and 1.5xH for Kaleidescape movies. This meant an ideal viewing distance of 5.9 metres or 2.9 metres, respectively. As the client wanted to view football games in Full HD with his friends for 60% of the time, the last row was the primary seating position. For experiencing Kaleidescape films in 4K, the dual seating position in the front row was the primary seating position — this was the best compromise to achieve the best of both worlds. The design of the room was achieved by collaborating with the Studio Piet Boon design agency. When choosing light colours for wall fabrics and the custom-built cinema chairs, ‘light output headroom’ for the projector was considered. The original Barco Loki projector was replaced by a Barco Njord with 1200 lumens (adjustable). 73

The Camellias TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Macbee Macbee were in charge of this entire project from start to finish — the goal was to create a unique, discrete, worldclass private cinema with the largest screen possible and seating capacity for 45-50 people. If that wasn’t enough, the client also wanted the space to double up as an auditorium for live performances. All the cinema features had to be controlled from a single device at the touch of a button and the room needed to be audio-video calibrated. The integrators were given unrestricted access to the budget and timeline but were told that the space had to be one of the best designed in the world and offer an immersive experience like no other. A virtual reality (VR) version of the room was created, so the client could ‘step’ into the space and anticipate the final design. Macbee fitted a 550in floor-to-ceiling screen and additional seating was placed on the side of the room — it was mainly designed for use during the live performances. The 32-channel audio setup is capable of playing Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D and DTS:X, and the home cinema system includes a Trinnov layout of 21.6.10. A centralised control panel with an easy-to-use GUI was installed and the projector and equipment rack were placed in an individual room. All the sub-woofers were positioned in the corners of the room, and in the front of the room, Macbee used two subs on each side, to get more gain. A total of six subs were used — four in the front and two in the rear. 77

Consexto The client gave Consexto a tough assignment — to create a James Bond-themed room with a luxurious cinema that could adapt depending on the configuration of the space and the audience in it. The speaker layout moves and the picture changes accordingly — Consexto made calculations to take into account the room modes and also trusted the calibration of the audio processor to achieve what was required. Two Audioquest Niagara 7000 power conditioners were added to give the Mark Levinson amps more punch. A controlled power distribution unit from Pakedge was used for the network and control system. To achieve a wow factor, in true Bond style, mechanisms were included — a motorised double door entrance hides the cinema behind a bookshelf, and the way to enter the room is to move a scale model of an Aston Martin car or say: “Moneypenny — open door.” A moving platform changes the configuration of the cinema from three to seven or 11 seats — this was a major challenge, but four seats are hidden under the room and move when the room is altered. There’s also a hidden bar with an integrated mini bar that has two bottles — one for Vodka and the other for Martini — a shaker and two glasses. Aston Martin buttons from the car seats are builtin to the cinema seats and connected to KNX input modules, enabling control of different functions, including volume, open / close doors, lights and seating positions. Apparently, Aston Martin’s designers were very impressed by the cinema. 81

One is never enough — Cornflake created this additional relaxed viewing space for someone who already had a high-performance cinema room

Clink Wharf – “my other home cinema room” TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Cornflake For some clients, one home cinema room just isn’t enough. This project already included a reference level, high-performance cinema space, but the customer also wanted a more relaxed and flexible big-screen viewing experience for entertaining, as well as highperformance audio. As integrator Cornflake says, a dedicated home cinema space can be all-encompassing and immersive, which is ideal for a purist home cinema experience, but maybe not suitable for socialising. This large, open-plan space needed to be subtly fitted out with a flexible TV and projection combination. All the AV equipment was installed in a centralised rack with UPS and power monitoring part of the wholehome integrated system. All centralised equipment had dedicated active cooling for optimal performance and longevity. All areas in the house, including this space, with HVAC were included on the Cornflake Crestron GUI for secondary thermostatic controls in each area. Unfortunately, the space wasn’t ideal for surround sound speakers, due to exposed brickwork and reduced ceiling depth, so Cornflake worked with the client to achieve the best ‘bang for buck’ front channel audio configuration. A 16:9 projector screen was supplied, which was ideal for viewing sport — the client was an avid Aston Villa fan — as well as more casual everyday background viewing. Ambient light conditions were challenging — three of the four walls featured large windows, so automated blackout blinds were required for use with the projection system. 85

London Penthouse Media Room TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

GLO The client’s brief was to create a design-led media room that complemented the contemporary design of the space. They also wanted a high level of audio performance, video fidelity and flexible control. The speakers had to blend in with the furniture and finishings, so GLO took a lot of time to ensure the speakers were compatible with the joinery and were perfectly RAL-matched to the other finishes. Multiple samples were obtained from Artcoustic on finished surfaces, to compare and sign off with the client and designer. Video fidelity was key — there was a lot of light in the room, even with KNX-controlled drapery, so having a dual video end-point system was deemed essential. This meant the client could still enjoy their view of the city while using the system with an OLED TV. For dark evenings, the user could switch to a hidden projection screen and projector, which descended from the ceiling. GLO received a very specific control system brief from the client, who was a huge sports fan. The system needed to be able to have multiple video streams on the screen at any one time, but also have the controlled flexibility to switch between the audio for each stream. GLO designed a Savant Pro AV system that allowed for eight sources on the screen at once. The client could then set up the sports content on various devices and switch the audio as required. A 10Gb IP network was created to support the Savant Pro AV, allowing for 4K/60 4:4:4 and HDR video distribution for all the connected sources. 89

Pinball Power TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Finite Solutions This space was previously used as a pinball machine room — the client wanted to keep several of the machines on display, so a lot of the design considerations were around fitting them in and having a suitable playing area at the front. The performance objectives for the design were to deliver a Dolby Atmos 7.4.4 theatre as close as possible to CEDIA guidelines, to achieve the best sound quality possible within budget, and a 4K HDR image in a 16:9 screen format. The room would be used to watch TV and sport just as much as movies. A Control4 system was chosen to control the AV and the Lutron RA2 lighting, as this was considered the most cost-effective solution. The performance of the room was based on Finite Solutions’ very first dem room, which the client visited several years ago. Most of the challenges were in the build design — staging and screen positioning were difficult because of the client’s pinball machines. This meant regular adjustments were needed, but everything worked in pre- and post-sale renders and build drawings. Integrator Finite Solutions said while this wasn’t the most challenging room to deal with, the AV system is rock solid and performs fantastically. Plus there’s the fun factor of the pinball machines — the client has more than 40 and swaps them in and out of the room. 93

The Arabian TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

BNC Technology This client’s goal was to have a multipurpose space that was suitable for a young family. The room in the house was located next to the outdoor entertainment area, by the pool. It was initially designed as a TV room, so the client could watch content while overseeing his kids, but, at night, or when the family wanted to transform the space, it needed to be turned into an immersive media room. Design was key — the client didn’t want it to look like a typical cinema room and they didn’t want to see bulky equipment anywhere in the space. The tech had to be integrated into the existing design. Two of the walls in the media room were glass — this posed a massive threat to the amount of ambient light coming into the room. BNC Technology recommended the installation of a 75in screen for daytime viewing and a motorised high-gain screen for the evening, or when the light was at a tolerable level. The customer didn’t want curtains, so blinds were the only option. When it came to speakers, conventional subwoofer placement was impossible, as the front cabinets which housed the equipment rack could not accommodate them without losing further space in the room. This meant BNC Technology had to create an acoustically transparent ceiling and then mount all the subwoofers from it. Rear and surround sound speakers were all mounted in the ceiling as wall space was not available. Removable ceiling panels in sections were installed, allowing access if required. With all the tech hidden away, the room looked ultraclean from a design perspective, which was one of the main objectives. 97

Synergy Technologies This client had a longstanding relationship with Synergy, and he’d always encouraged them to push the envelope when it came to design and performance. That’s certainly true of this latest project — an immersive AV media room with a showstopping ceiling star light panel system. The starting point was the customer’s decade-old Meridian Digital Theatre system — he loved the sound signature of it and had developed an affinity for his Meridian DSP8000 speakers. This meant the client wanted to retain his old system, but also embrace the latest immersive AV tech. Synergy opted for a large 200in diagonal Screen Innovations CinemaScope curved fixed screen coupled with a Sony VPL-VW870ES 4K projector and added a Lumagen Radiance Pro 4K scaler for up-conversion of HD content and aspect ratio control. The speaker system had an SE (Special Edition) upgrade, with superior amplification and beryllium tweeters, and additional surround sound and ceiling speakers from Meridian, as well as four Bowers & Wilkins DB1D subwoofers — all room-corrected and bass-managed by Trinnov’s sophisticated and powerful processing. A Kaleidescape Strato 4K movie player complemented the 4K Apple TV. The overall look and feel of the room were enhanced by the ceiling star light panel, Italian furniture, architectural lighting with an invisible source and concealed acoustic treatment. Full automation of the media room was enabled by Crestron.

Synergy partnered with interior design company YOCA to create the interior décor, which included exotic marble and metal. Acoustic performance was optimised and visible reflections and distractions, thanks to the glossy materials, were avoided. 101

Avant-garde Media Room TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

White Noise (Sound & Acoustic Designs) White Noise (Sound & Acoustic Designs) were lucky enough to have a client give them free rein when it came to the design and execution of this media room. The client was well-travelled and had an eclectic taste in design — they wanted the space to look unconventional. What they didn’t want for their newly built luxury home was the blind emulation of a commercial cinema or typical home theatre. The brief was for an informal space that was interesting aesthetically and could also function acoustically as a multipurpose entertainment media room. The client opted for a striking, curved panel design but was concerned about the wall looking too busy. White Noise provided 3D renderings and even made a scale model of a panel to allay their fears. The biggest challenge was to execute the design, so White Noise collaborated with its sister company, Avantgarde Design Studios. Waterproof Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) foam boards of 11ft were custommade for the project to avoid rattling and paint cracking at joints due to vibrations in the room. A Live End Dead End (LEDE) acoustic design concept was employed, where the front of the room is deadened, using ample absorption — this makes the space feel wider and bigger than it is. The client loved entertaining and had multiple dogs that were free to roam around the house, so in-wall and inceiling speakers were used for aesthetic reasons and low maintenance. The project demonstrated how acoustics and aesthetics can work well together. 105

This innovative project aimed to provide accessible technology for QEF’s new 48-room Care and Rehabilitation Centre in Surrey. The goal was to increase residents’ independence by enabling them to control their own home environment and entertainment; where they would otherwise be reliant on care providers or family. Crestron Home integrates all the current core systems including AV, intercom, lighting, HVAC and shading. The scalability of the system means that additional components such as motorised windows, door controllers or smart sockets, can be added in the future if required. The primary user interface is Amazon Echo/Alexa using voice control. To ensure accessibility for any physical or mental disability, the interface has been enhanced to include alternative interface options such as eye-gaze solutions and text to speech apps, such as Speak4Me, which enable Alexa voice commands to be triggered via a touch-pad. As each resident has unique needs, automated changes of environmental conditions are unsuitable for the facility. It was essential therefore for the solution to be easily customisable for each individual. This is achieved via the Alexa app and has the advantage that it can be undertaken by the client, family or QEF within minutes. Bespoke routines, incorporating any of the integrated platforms, are also simple to set-up and activate using a single button press or voice command, such as “good morning”. 109

Haven Pastures TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Jooced Custom Sound and Vision Haven Pastures is an exclusive collection of new properties set in the stunning countryside of North Warwickshire. The prestigious development consists of six large family homes, all finished to a luxury specification, with a complete home automation solution being integral to the design. Key requisites, from the developer, were a single interface for control of all systems along with an expandable infrastructure to incorporate systems in the future. Budget was also a significant factor to ensure return on investment. Jooced Custom Sound and Vision selected Control 4 to integrate the core systems which include AV lighting, shades, HVAC, access and security for all internal and external areas. As specified, audio and video distribution is available throughout the property with discreet in-ceiling speakers in each of the living areas and bedrooms. The kitchen and lounge each have a 5.1 surround sound system. For simplicity of use, lighting scenes have been pre-programmed for each area while remote temperature sensors facilitate climate control. The main user interface is a 10" touch screen in the kitchen, with remote controls and keypads in each room. The owners also have the option to manage devices through a mobile phone app which means that when they’re away from home they can control access to the house and receive alarm notifications. A site-wide fibre optic network links all the entrances, call points and houses. As a result, the development offers residents a high level of security with automated gates, alarms, CCTV and NVR. 113

The Experience TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATOR

Jooced Custom Sound and Vision Jooced Custom Sound and Vision wanted to create an exceptional showroom to help clients visualise how modern technology can be incorporated seamlessly into a home. The resulting “experience centre” comprises a 100sqm area where visitors can sample a range of home entertainment and automation options within a variety of different living spaces. These include a dining room, open-plan kitchen, media room, home cinema, and outdoors. Behind an electric sliding door, a tiered 4K cinema room features 9.1.4 surround sound, motorised screen and Fortress seats. It houses a selection of projectors to demonstrate different options side by side. In contrast, a small media room, designed to feel like a ski lodge, uses 5.1 to display the sound quality that can be achieved in a typical living room rather than a purpose-built space. A Crestron Home automation system is used to demonstrate video content distribution, as well as the automated home cinema, and various speaker options throughout the living spaces. The main cinema and media room can also be operated by Control4 to allow users to get a feel for different interfaces. Clients can experience personalised lighting through a Lutron Control system along with automated curtains and blinds. The outdoor area highlights options available for lighting, AV and security. Each space has been exquisitely designed and reflects how technology can be discreetly installed within a home. For example, the equipment rack has been cleverly integrated into the kitchen furniture. Overall, this highly successful installation has proved popular with customers. 117
