MAKING HISTORY

TOGETHER It’s a milestone year for ISE. As the show celebrates its 20th anniversary, we stand as proud original partners, eager to engage with the industry through a myriad of education, certification, and networking opportunities. As your anticipation builds for this year’s show, take a walk down memory lane in an exclusive interview with Mike Blackman and enjoy a preview of CEDIA’s most can’t-miss moments, including our Annual Meeting, which will recap the past year and take a look ahead at what’s to come. As an association, CEDIA has also been celebrating several milestones of its own. The launch of the Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice (RP22) in Sept. 2023 has been met with resounding success from the entire industry. To date, RP22 is CEDIA’s most downloaded resource, and the accompanying workshops on the subject are consistently sell-out events. This revolutionary document is the product of several years’ worth of research and collaboration from global volunteer experts across the industry. I stand in awe of their efforts, and I know you will too.

This past year has also reaffirmed the importance of showing up. At ISE 2023, we presented the NextGen Toolkit with the goal of inspiring our members to share this valuable resource to young people in their communities. Fast forward a year, and the impact has been remarkable. Students from around the world have had the opportunity to learn about the industry firsthand from integrators, sparking enthusiasm and a thirst for more knowledge. This past fall, I was honored to join in the live celebrations of all three CEDIA Smart Home Awards ceremonies for the first time. Shaking hands with the award winners in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia Pacific regions and witnessing the look on their faces as their names were called was truly irreplaceable. To add to that, this year’s awards saw the most entries since 2018. As you catch up on all the fun and dive into the details about the winners, I encourage you to consider entering our 2024 CEDIA Smart Home Awards. While the ceremonies are always a fun occasion, the true value of our awards lies in their year-round ability to amplify your brand and display your expertise to clients and partners. As you seek more information on these CEDIA initiatives, I hope you’ll enjoy navigating our new website: www.cedia.org. You’ll notice the reimagined pages provide a more seamless experience for accessing what you need. The website’s refreshed performance is already yielding positive results in traffic and search, and I’m grateful to our team for consistently working to improve our digital presence. With the start of the new year, I’m looking forward to engaging with the industry in Barcelona. If you’re at ISE, I invite you to visit the CEDIA booth (2H500). I’ll be there daily to catch up over a drink during our Connection Hour drinks reception on Tuesday and Thursday from 5-6 p.m. I rely on your thoughtful insight on how to strengthen our association and continue to make history together. While expressing support for the concept of the Cyber Trust Mark, CEDIA also emphasized the importance of professional installation by qualified integrators as a necessary means of safeguarding homeowners. The association asserts that integrators are key in the mitigation of security risks because of their extensive knowledge on how to install, maintain, connect, and deploy technology systems in the home. I AM CEDIA

I A M CED I A

I AM

BEN GOFF Technical Director, Cinema Lusso

INTERVIEW BY: JESSICA GUYON

How long have you been in the industry and how did you break into this career?

Describe your current role and what a typical day looks like for you.

I’ve been interested in AV from quite a young age. In fact, I bought my first surround sound system from Richer Sounds with money I saved up from my paper round. That system evolved over a few years, with a chunk of my first-year student loans going towards a new subwoofer and another fairly significant amount going towards a projector the following year. At least it’s fair to say that my wife, who I met at university, knew what she was getting into from the moment we met.

When Cinema Lusso was in its infancy, I wore a lot of different hats to keep up with the demands of business, so there wasn’t really a “typical day” for quite some time. Some days were spent selling, others were spent designing and fitting, but most days it was like spinning plates.

After receiving my first marketing job offer after graduation, I immediately began planning how to spend my salary on the next round of upgrades. I went straight to the website for my local HiFi store where I saw a list of job vacancies. As if by fate, Wayne Hyde, who’s now at Custom AV Distribution, had just accepted a new role in London and was leaving the shop. I jumped on the opportunity and spent a week learning under Wayne before taking over the position. While I never ended up starting at that original job, I did spend my salary like I’d planned on a seriously nice 2-channel system (with my staff discount, of course).

Thankfully, that’s changed over the last few years. We’ve made a very intentional shift away from whole home AV in order to specialise in cinema and entertainment rooms. Since my focus is on technical design, a typical day for me now revolves around research and drawings. The work has become an equal split between projects we’re building ourselves and ones we’re consulting on for other integrators. You were recently named the Standards Volunteer of the Year at the 2023 CEDIA Smart Home Awards. Why is volunteering so important to you? Do any particular moments or projects stand out when you reflect on your volunteerism? Up until I joined the R10 standards group, I’d been guilty of paying our membership dues but not really interacting with the organisation from one year to the next. I’d done the COI course, taught it once, but didn’t give it the time or attention it deserved. When I joined R10, I immediately knew I had found my place inside CEDIA. Coincidently, it was Wayne Hyde who told me about the RP22 project and arranged for me to join, so that was the second door he’d opened for me. The recommended practice for immersive audio took a total of three years to complete, and I couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of that effort. RP22 is a fantastic resource for everybody involved in designing

entertainment spaces, but also a major step forward in gaining respect for our profession. Standards and recommended practices bring us immense credibility with the design and build community as well as our clients. In all, this work has never felt like volunteering because I take away more than I give. Every week, I catch up with friends and learn something new. It’s probably the most valuable hour of the week for me, quite frankly. So, I’m still not really sure I even accept the term “volunteer,” but the award is welcomed, nonetheless. What is the most rewarding part of your job? Our company’s purpose is to provide entertainment. Nobody needs a private cinema, so I’m under no illusion that the work we do is going to change the world. But I do see value in the two hours of escapism afforded by a great movie. That can be powerful. It may be the only time in the week a busy family sits down together or the highlight of someone’s tough day. I find it particularly rewarding when I receive photos and messages from clients about the films or sporting events they’re watching with friends and family. We’re not changing the world, but we’re delivering rooms that people make lifelong memories in.

RP22 is a fantastic resource for everybody involved in designing entertainment spaces, but also a major step forward in gaining

respect for our profession.

C E D I A AT I SE 2024

CEDIA CELEBRATES THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ISE Daryl Friedman

Wendy Griffiths

Matt Nimmons

CEDIA Global President and CEO

Senior Vice President of Membership & Global Development at CEDIA

Managing Director of CEDIA EMEA

“My inaugural experience at ISE was the rescheduled show in May of 2022. It held special significance for me as it marked my first largescale gathering since the pandemicinduced lockdowns. What struck me most vividly was the palpable want for face-to-face interactions, and the collective sense of longing that had built up during the period of isolation. It was a heartening reminder of the power of in-person connections and the invaluable role that events like ISE play in our industry. ISE is undoubtedly a prominent event in the industry, and my experience being a part of CEDIA has provided me with a unique vantage point to appreciate its significance. Being on the inside at CEDIA has deepened my understanding of the collaborative spirit that permeates the event. I’ve come to see ISE as not just an exhibition of cuttingedge technology but also as a forum for thought leadership, knowledge sharing, and industry networking.

“I have been with CEDIA for over 23 years and in the pro-audio, hi-fi, and smart homes industry for even longer than that. I got involved with ISE at the very beginning – attending the first show in Geneva and only missing one edition in the last 20 years. I have witnessed how ISE has evolved over the years to meet industry transitions. For the smart homes industry, this has meant an expansion into the lighting, security and networking sectors. The show has gone from being very European focussed to now a global show that has expanded from an exhibition to a platform for content and learning. The first edition of ISE is still one that I hold dear to my heart, where a small number of exhibitors arrived with very little expectations and left with a feeling of elation and excitement for the next edition. Seeing how it has grown year on year has been fantastic.”

“The journey we have been on with Mike and his team over the last 20 years has been truly unbelievable. My very first ISE with CEDIA was in Brussels in 2006 and I have seen some remarkable changes over these years, as has the systems integration market. From modest beginnings – where the show floor was made up of simple shell schemes – to the incredible eye-catching booths over eight halls in our new home in a modern, purpose-built facility – it has been a truly global growth and a remarkable journey. ISE, and the industries it serves, has brought people together from all over the world, and I am delighted it has found such a great new home in Barcelona. I cannot wait to see how the show continues to evolve over the next few decades and look forward to many more successful years ahead.”

One of the most notable changes in my opinion is the recognition of ISE as a hub for innovation and a platform that fosters meaningful partnerships. CEDIA and ISE share a commitment to pushing the boundaries of (smart home) technology and the opportunity it provides for professionals to come together, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations is a testament to its importance in advancing our industry. It’s given me a deeper appreciation for ISE’s role as a unifying force in the industry and it’s not merely a trade show but a catalyst for progress, education, and collaboration.”

IS E 2 024

Mike Blackman on 20 years of ISE In the realm of integrated systems technology, one event has stood as a beacon for the industry, drawing exhibitors and attendees from all corners of the globe. For two decades, the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) show has played a pivotal role in shaping the pro AV and systems integration landscape. While ISE celebrates its 20th anniversary, Mike takes us on a remarkable trip down memory lane, revealing the fascinating story behind the formation of ISE and his own journey over the decades. The Birth of ISE

Choosing the Venue and Date

The real first mover was Randy Lemke of InfoComm (later AVIXA) – he had the idea. While there had been previous InfoComm shows in Germany, in collaboration with the Photokina show and with exhibitors such as Kodak, Randy recognised that the AV industry was changing, and a new exhibition was needed to cater to these changes. Randy reached out to Billilynne Keller from CEDIA and Chuck Wilson from NSCA, and together they hatched the plan to create ISE.

One critical aspect of ISE’s success is its choice of venue and date. Mike reveals that the initial venue, Geneva, was chosen for its neutral location.

The Early Days and Formation of ISE Mike officially joined Integrated Systems Events in 2003, and the journey to launch the show began. In the early days, he had just two team members, Godwin Demicoli and a trainee. Together, they laid the groundwork for the inaugural event in January 2004. The team started small but with a big vision, and they gradually expanded as the show grew. After using a logistics agency for a few years, the organisation recruited Martine Niermans and Daniëlle Inostroza as the in-house operations team began to take shape. In the marketing department, the team continued to expand with the addition of Dan Goldstein and Stefanie Span (formerly Hanel).

20

However, exhibitors had to deal with Swiss import and export requirements; the clear message after the show was to move away from Geneva, based on logistical considerations. After a European road trip that Mike undertook with Jason McGraw of InfoComm, Amsterdam became the new home for ISE. Evolution and Growth ISE continued to evolve over the years. As the show expanded and matured, new areas and opportunities emerged. Mike reflects on the early days and how the team learned from each experience, saying, “Do you know, I’ve seen everything as evolution. Launching in Geneva was not a mistake. It wasn’t the right place to launch, but it helped because it kept the show neutral.” Despite the challenges, every experience contributed to ISE’s growth and success. The Impact of ISE on the Industry Mike notes that brands have adapted their programmes to achieve maximum impact at ISE. He explains: “ISE provides

the opportunity for companies to do market research with customers and potential customers to find out what they want and learn. Over the years, we’ve seen a change in the R&D process in that more and more companies are focussing their product launches for January/February. For display companies, it makes a lot of sense because they’re taking some equipment to CES in the U.S. and then shipping it straight to ISE afterwards. So, within a two-week window, they get the opportunity to launch products in two continents. We see the same for our pro audio companies as well. It helps them to present their products in the marketplace.”

The Future of ISE

I see ISE as being even more important in the future.

As the show grew, the concept of Technology Zones emerged to help attendees navigate the vast array of offerings. These zones, such as the Content Production & Distribution Zone introduced in 2023, serve to group related technologies and make it easier for attendees to explore specific areas of interest. Exhibitors also benefit from being clustered together, fostering collaboration, and attracting visitors with complementary needs.

Technology Zones and Clustering

As ISE celebrates its 20th anniversary, the show is set to be its biggest and most impactful yet. Mike emphasises the importance of in-person events and the value they provide to the industry. He sees ISE evolving in a way that incorporates a blend of physical and digital elements to cater to the needs of the modern world.

He envisions ISE continuing to be a platform for innovation and growth, stating, “I see ISE as being even more important in the future. I think the show is still going to be here in 20 years’ time, but it will have evolved into something more. I see ISE influencing the industry to a greater extent and helping the industry to move forward, which is what I’ve always wanted.” As ISE looks ahead to the next 20 years and beyond, one thing remains clear: the show will continue to be a driving force in the industry, shaping its future and bringing together professionals from around the world to celebrate integrated systems technology. www.iseurope.org

IVY COTTAGE MEDIA LOUNGE

T

The challenging brief was to create a media room in a modest lounge, in a Victorian house, while maintaining the original styling and features of the property. The client is a musician and wanted a dedicated cinema plus the ability to play music very loudly,

whereas his wife wanted a warm and cosy space to relax, with no visible technology, and did not want music reverberating around the home. Taking into consideration the goals of the installation, and the space limitations, The Big Picture designed bespoke cabinets,

in American Black Walnut and fumed Louro Faia, to house the core AV equipment. A purpose-built screen wall sits above them. When the screen is not in use, it is covered by a roller blind with specially commissioned artwork. Hiding the projector within the room took ingenuity. It has been mounted vertically within the back wall, with the images projected via a specialist angled mirror. A piece of art, to match the room’s décor, covers the projector’s insulated housing.

Cladding the ceiling and walls in ROCKWOOL provides both acoustic insulation and makes the room considerably warmer. A 6mm pegboard reflects and diffuses sound back into the room. Huge bass traps are sited in four of the six vertical corners and the cornice has been extended for bass diffusion. Stylish specialist acoustic fabric, in teal velvet, provides the desired cosiness, and additional sound insulation. The subwoofers have been fixed to the solid chimney breast, to avoid vibrations on the wooden floors, and disguised using fake doors. On winning the Best Global Media Room, Ciaran Wilkins, owner of The Big Picture, commented: “Having Ivy Cottage named Best Global Media Room is among the most gratifying moments of my career; the space is one of which I’m immensely proud. My vision for Ivy Cottage was to prove that it’s possible to deliver a truly contemporary, no-compromise sound and vision experience in a space that communicates its heritage and supports day-to-day family life. I hope that the Best Global Media Room award shows how it can be done, and inspires other clients to create their own accessible, inspiring spaces.”

WHY EVERYONE SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT THE IMMERSIVE AUDIO SYSTEM DESIGN RECOMMENDED PRACTICE [RP22] B Y W A LT Z E R B E

The new recommended practice for immersive audio is redefining how we quantify system performance and educating customers on how to hold us accountable to the highest professional standard.

T

he CEDIA/CTA-RP22 Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice (or simply, RP22) is a document that was designed to level the immersive audio playing field by focusing on system design and performance. This is the first time in our industry where system performance metrics are defined by four levels instead of vague “good, better, best packages” or “low, middle, high-cost models.” And the new definitions aren’t just for integrators’ benefit. Shoppers today are more informed than ever, and rarely make purchasing decisions without first conducting some form of research. From small purchases like a drill to large investments like a car, customers want to see reviews, read about interesting features, and compare a product or service to others in the market. So, why shouldn’t the customer of an immersive audio system have access to the same information about the professional they are looking to hire?

34

RP22

5

Yes, there are technical elements outlined in the document and yes, there are underlying skills an integrator will need to possess to understand and implement RP22. But ultimately, it’s about designing and delivering a level of performance for the customer and preserving creative intent. As professionals, we have a responsibility to deliver exceptional experiences at every level, starting at Level 1.

and delivering a level of performance for the

It’s about designing

customer and preserving creative intent.

Level 1 addresses the minimum level of performance and could be accomplished with simply an AVR and bookshelf speakers, in the appropriate space of course, while Level 4 would be a state-of-the art experience. Simply put, it’s about designing a system to deliver the chosen performance level for the intended space. With RP22, manufacturers know their products are functioning as intended while customers understand the breadth of what they are paying for. Having clearly defined levels not only holds integrators accountable, it also elevates our industry to the highest professional standard, so in the end, everyone wins.

Under the leadership of CEDIA Director of Government Affairs, Darren Reaman, and CEDIA Global President and CEO, Daryl Friedman, this event underscored the critical role of skilled trades in Michigan and the need for a conducive regulatory environment that bolsters the smart home technology industry.

37

Ahead of the day, CEDIA issued a resounding call to its members and fellow residential technology

professionals in Michigan to unite and amplify their collective voice – and they answered.

Michigan is one of 24 states that has neither licensing nor exemptions for Class 2 and Class 3 power limited circuits as defined by the National Electrical Code, causing ambiguity as to what an integrator is permitted to perform within the home environment. CEDIA’s primary goal was to introduce the industry’s vital work and the critical contributions of integrators throughout Michigan to legislative leaders. The event also emphasized the overall importance of supporting skilled trades industries.

Throughout the day, 21 different legislative meetings were held, including one with leaders from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) on the importance of a supportive regulatory environment for the industry. A special lunchtime session provided a platform for CEDIA leaders and Senator Mark Huizenga to share invaluable insights on home technology policy. The day’s proceedings concluded with a closing session at the Michigan Legislative Consultants offices where the group shared their experiences and developed plans for future legislative days. This pioneering in-person state lobby day is part of a broader expansion of CEDIA’s government affairs efforts. The expansion includes the recruitment of statewide leaders and another upcoming advocacy day in 2024 in Washington, D.C.

CEDIA MEMBER OF EXCELLENCE ALAN MATTHEWS HAS BEEN MAKING HUGE STRIDES IN ACCESSIBILITY FOR THE HOME TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY OVER THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS.

M

atthews owns the integration business Automated Spaces, which focuses on smart home, home cinemas and independent living technologies. After hearing about the Policy Connect – Smarter Homes for Independent Living Report at a CEDIA Tech Summit in early 2022, he decided to focus more of his business efforts on independent living technologies. In fact, it has since become a major pillar of the business. CEDIA’s involvement in the new guidance interested him because he was a CEDIA Member of Excellence. The report offered new advice about what the governmentprovided disabled facilities grant (DFG) funds could be used for, which he knew it was a big deal. “If the disabled facilities grant changed, the delivery guidance for local authorities also changed.” Suddenly, the DFG could be used for many elements traditional smart home installers were already installing.

Some of the most important changes Matthews noticed in the DFG guidance: •

The business is in early-stage discussions with a group of Care Homes to create a demonstration room in a residential care home setting. Matthews visited a care home to provide an in-person technology demonstration, particularly focusing on TV, radio, light, and curtain control. The care home was impressed with the potential capabilities and has since begun exploring setting up a demonstration room in one of their three care homes to gently introduce residents to the technology.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INTEGRATED TECH & ACCESSIBILITY Matthews is changing how smart home technology is seen, particularly in his home country England. Automated Spaces became a CEDIA Member of Excellence and won awards during 2022. Matthews won the 2023 Education Volunteer of the Year award. For integrators, he emphasizes the importance of taking time to read the updated guidance. Once you understand the changes, reach out to your local care providers, home improvement agencies, and occupational therapists to start having conversations with them. “They’re very keen to understand,” he says. If you have a showroom, use it to help the carers and community partners in your area understand the good you can do with the technology you’re already installing. This work can drastically improve quality of life, which is what the industry is all about.

IMMERSIVE AUDIO DESIGN RECOMMENDED PRACTICE

The new recommended practice for immersive audio design (RP22) redefines how we quantify system performance. This is the first time that system performance metrics are defined by four distinct levels, instead of vague “good, better, best" packages or “low, middle, high" cost models.

ENDORSED BY INDUSTRY LEADING BRANDS

And the new definitions aren’t just for integrators’ benefit... With RP22, manufacturers know their products are functioning as intended; customers understand the breadth of what they are paying for. Having clearly defined levels not only holds integrators accountable, it also elevates our industry to the highest professional standard.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – STEVE MOORE Steve Moore decided against a career in architecture to launch a business selling high-end AV to music-loving homeowners nearly 40 years ago. He then left to set up SMC in 1993 and, inspired by a visit to CEDIA Expo that year, helped to launch CEDIA in the UK, running it alongside his own company from his London dining room, subsequently teaching at numerous CEDIA events worldwide. SMC, like the industry in general, has grown enormously since then, and Moore has consulted for a wide variety of technology businesses, large and small, along the way. With strong successors running SMC, Moore is now semi-retired, and continues to support others operating in the connected home space.

CEDIA FELLOW – JAMES CHEN James Chen is a US-Australian entrepreneur and global technology thought leader with over 30 years of experience in the AV industry. He began his career as an integrator, and is now the Managing Director of cable manufacturer, Kordz. Since joining the company in 2008, Chen has spearheaded Kordz’ development of multi-award-winning and patented cable innovation and expanded distribution to more than 40 countries. Chen serves on CEDIA’s Technology Education Committee and Governance Committee. A technology enthusiast, Chen recently completed his study of Artificial Intelligence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He regularly authors and presents on topics regarding technology to audiences around the world.

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN TECH BY JESSICA GUYON CEDIA makes global strides in creating a sense of community among women in the maledominated smart home technology industry Over the past year, CEDIA has been intensifying its focus on supporting women in the smart home technology industry. In November, the Women in Consumer Technology (WiCT) group organized a full-day networking event at the CEDIA headquarters titled “New Year, New You! The Power of Executive Coaching.” Through breakout sessions and speaker presentations, CEDIA members and staff gained valuable insights into the world of coaching and how a professional coach can elevate their careers and lives. Now, similar efforts have extended across the pond. Following on the success of the Women in AV breakfast at the recent CEDIA Tech Summit and Conference, Dr. Hailey Daly, Business Development Manager for Wired By MJD, and Paul Skelton, CEDIA’s Regional Development Consultant for Australia and New Zealand, came up with an idea to keep the momentum going. They decided to launch the Australian Women in Residential Technology group for women to come together and access support as well as to discuss ways to attract more women into the industry.

54

“This is such an important initiative, and I look forward to learning about the ideas the members of this group will bring forward,” said Paul Skelton. “I believe the Australian Women in Residential Technology group will help to attract new talent to our industry and empower the women in our market to speak and be heard.” Under Paul and Hailey’s leadership, this community will work closely to ensure women are represented in all of CEDIA’s local initiatives as course instructors, awards judges, subject matter experts, and more. The group will also help to coordinate the Women in Residential Technology networking event at the annual Australian Tech Summit & Conference. “I wanted to start this community as a way to ensure that the future generation of women coming into our industry don’t have to go through the same difficulties that many of us have experienced to date,” said Dr. Hailey Daly. “I want this to be a safe space where everybody can share ideas without judgement; it’s a platform for us to learn, laugh, encourage, support, and celebrate one another. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, I figured it would be nice to build a community of like-minded women who could discuss the mental load associated with trying to balance our work and private lives.” For more information about the Australian Women in Residential Technology group and to join, please contact Paul Skelton at pskelton@cedia.org or Dr. Hailey Daly at hailey@wiredbymjd.com.au.
