Welcome to February, and Issue #32! As we roll this month of romance in we are also falling in love with the all new Second Style Island sim. We are absolutely thrilled with all the hard work the Ambiance team put into rebuilding Le Zoo, so much in fact we’ve reserved some space within the magazine to show it off. Many thanks to Prad Prathivi for sneaking into the sim and snapping some amazing shots to share with our readers! In keeping with the traditions of romance, this month we are exploring love across the ages with a special photo spread done by James Schwarz. We are happy to have Bleeding Edge back this month as well, and James look at Valentines Past. Clyde Saunders shares with us his color of the month Red, while Ana Lutetia opens our eyes to the designs of anuenue with her Fresh Faces piece. Tenshi Vielle gives us a look through the content creator’s eyes, and shows you the love, sweat and tears they put into their creations. You will also find an eye catching look at some accessories with Gabby Panacek’s To Top It Off, while Luna Jubilee gives us all JUST what we are looking for to spice up our Valentine’s with a Mini Guide on lingerie. Rounding things out for the month Brigitte Belgar is ever insightful with all things holiday in this month’s Postcards. And finally we are spicing things up with Vega Arida’s interpretation of The Look of a Spanish Romance. We hope you enjoy everything from cover to cover, AND we hope to see you at the big grand re-opening bash for the Second Style Island sim this month. There will be a day full of events, music and giveaways. We are looking forward to getting to meet some of our faithful readers!

fresh faces | Anuenue By Ana Lutetia
Anuenue isn’t exactly an unknown name in the SL fashion scene but it is still fairly new and, in my opinion, needs some publicity to become more mainstream. The attire found in store is so cute, and just so happens to have very affordable prices. I think for me, the difficulty whenever I visit the store is what to choose. If they had a ‘buy it all’ button, I would feel extremely tempted to click it. Even though the clothing is extremely rich in details and quite appealing, I’d really love to see some more layer options in each piece. Marea Kirax is the creative mind behind anuenue. This is Marea’s first attempt at desiging, and it has been over a year and a half since she opened the doors of anuenue. To create the clothing for anuenue, Marea uses both photo sourced and hand draw material. In the process of creating she usually starts with a texture and then applies it to a design. The concept behind anuenue is a shop for cheerful girls and as samples of what you can find at the shop, I’ve picked mostly dresses. However, anuenue is not only a place to buy dresses; they also have boots, pant/shirt sets and separates. One of the things that really stands out, is the quality of the sculpted work and how adorable the textures are. As mentioned previously, the only thing I would love to see is more layer options to make the pieces more versatile, otherwise they are great just as they are. pic1: “anuenue. Dear Brig, This Valentine’s Day I have arranged what promises to be a lively series of speed dates. I’ll be honest-- I don’t expect many of them to result in actual relationships or even second encounters; I just want to entertain myself to avoid self-loathing and depression on what’s usually an incredibly somber, desolate day for me. My four-course date at least offers an always welcome opportunity for wardrobe-related felicity. I don’t care about actually impressing the gentlemen (and one woman) I’ll be going out with that night-- I only care that they pick up the tab. The prospect of having to charm them into doing that with my sparkly personality and intoxicating wit is, honestly, exhausting to even think about. I’d much rather dazzle their wallets with my stimulating ensembles. Would you be willing to put together a few looks for me, keeping in mind that I’ll be changing in between each date in my car’s backseat and/or public restroom stalls? Dear Verbose Vixen, First, I applaud your zealous efforts to ensure you have a stimulating V-day. I have to confess I never really know what to say when singletons contact me to ask what they might do on February 14th besides gorge on selfpurchased chocolates, sob while watching stale romantic flicks, and type incoherent, rage-infused e-mails to ex’s. I’m no therapist, you know?
I don’t know where you’re going or what you’re doing for your dates-- dining, I presume-- but I did my best to put together four looks that are guaranteed to be crowd (and pocketbook) pleasers. I tried to keep in mind constraints on time and physical changing space, too. Good luck remembering your suitors’ names on date night. If you eve turns into a garbage dump of a situation, log onto fmylife.com for reassurance that things could always be worse-- or for an opportunity to share a colorful anecdote about how things turned out. Dear Brig, I need help deciding what to present my paramour with on Valentine’s Day. A self-diagnosed shopaholic, she spends most of her in-world time combing through shops for frocks, shoes, and non-bling accessories. Usually she has to pencil in time for me, and even when we’re together she has to multi-task, unpacking boxes or trying on new skins and heels while we embrace-- but only on pose balls that offer full-frontal views of whatever she’s wearing. I want to buy her a new pair of shoes but I’m afraid she has every pair on the grid already. Impossible as that seems, I’ve been told that her shoes account for just over 18,000 of her 60,000 item deep inventory. How can I acquire the footwear I know will (finally) score me the cyber booty I’ve been chasing for so long?

Dear Footwear Friend, Unless you’re as fluent in pixilated footwear as your lover, nothing I can tell you will help you track down a pair of shoes that would guarantee you more than G-rated pose ball action. I think I have a solution for you, though. Do you know who her favorite shoe designer is? Can you (tactfully and carefully) find out? I’d approach the designer and see if you can petition them to create a custom shoe for your lady. Naturally, this will require some powerful persuasion skills and a pocket stuffed with Linden. Even before you do that, though, ask your mate about her favorite shoes and try to jot down some observations about her taste. Does she prefer heels? Boots? Flats? Is there a specific color she seems to sport more often than others? Does she like her shoes to make sounds? Does sparkly bling make her squeal with joy (or in horror)? Compose a ‘priority’ list of the qualities you think your honey would like to see in her dream shoe and cough up the cash for as many of them as you can afford as you work with the designer. I’m pretty sure that if you can pull it off this will be an incredible Valentine’s gift. Having a short poem or ballad about shoes prepared to present to her as she unwraps her prim box might be a nice touch, too-- just none of those horrendous single red roses. Dear Brig, While my friends spend the weeks leading up to February preparing scintillating ensembles for their February 14th exploits, I devote my time to putting together an outfit to celebrate one of my favorite February holidays-Presidents Day.

A lover of anything presidential (regardless of which party holds the office at any given time), I consider President’s Day an opportunity to pay much-deserve homage to my nation’s (sometimes) honorable leaders. Unfortunately, few share my zest for the third Monday of the month. None of my favorite designers seem to offer magisterial toggery options in their shops, and they certainly don’t share such treats in the form of group gifts. Alas, I’m left alone to assemble something that pays proper tribute to my country’s leaders. Can you help me arrange something appropriate to sport at the traditional in-world reading of George Washington’s Farewell Address that I attend? Dear Dutiful Diplomat, Good for you-- I had, I admit, completely forgotten about this holiday until you reminded me. I suspect that the ideal Presidents Day outfit would have a healthy amount of red, white, and blue with a dash of autocratic stateliness. It’s not the fourth of July, so put away your glowin-the-dark American flag t-shirt and those oversized blinking sunglasses. Instead, pull out your military-style jackets, stately boots, and classic striped tops. If you have one of those oldfashioned wigs once worn by our celebrated statesmen, dress it up with a crown or sparkly clip and you’ll be golden. I put together a few looks here to serve as inspiration for your outfit which, I suspect, will do a much better job of paying tribute to our fearless leaders than mine do. Here’s hoping your celebration is filled with scads of merriment and presidential-style joy-- whatever the heck that might be. God Bless America.

February is a month of love and romance, so red just seemed like the best color to showcase some the newest creations from Second Life® designers. The color red is also symbolic of passion. Those of you who know me, know I certainly have a passion for fashion. Instead of preparing outfits for your Valentine’s Day date, I took a high fashion approach with some amazing new releases from Risey Arai of Sey. If you are unfamiliar with Sey, it is an amazing brand which iswell known for their unique lines of male, female, and unisex items. Risey Arai is the Japanese designer of the trendy Sey store which constantly releases new items almost on a weekly basis. His unique and extremely detailed designs are sure to capture your attention. I love when designer’s incorporate lots of sculpted or prim items into their work. It just gives such a more realistic feel in this virtual environment. Sey is a perfect example of this. Their jackets, sweaters, hoodies, pants, and accessories are not only well made, but have incorporated the resize script, making it just a bit easier for those of you who dislike manual resizing. These innovative creations are definitely worth checking out. The first outfit was the most challenging to pull together. This jacket is so unique; I had some troubles thinking of possibilities to pair it with. It comes with fur, and no fur options, as well as a pocket, and pocketless option. Its combination of different tones of red and the zig-zag pattern make it one of a kind. I decided to pair this jacket with a knit top from Argrace in light gray, and pants from LeLutka in black. The belt, from Sey, tied everything together perfectly. A classic pair of aviator sunglasses from FNKY added another red element that complimented the outfit. The second outfit was a total blast to work with and style. It is a really fun outfit with a lot of great stylistic elements. The vest is really easy to wear, just one piece that can easily be resized in seconds to ensure a perfect fit. It also comes in different colors and patterns, so it is sure to appeal to everyone. Similar elements are also replicated in a pair of matching boots. The pattern, color, fur, and easy sizing capability are all in this pair of boots. These are so much fun to wear, so be sure to grab them before the end of winter! The chaps are one of the latest releases that work great with this outfit. The gray jeans are worn underneath the red chaps. Like many of the creations from Sey, there are multiple wear options, so you are sure to get several unique combinations. The third and final outfit features another amazing item from Sey. This jacket is one of my favorites from the entire collection. The tone on tone red with the black accents and gray collar create an intriguing combination. I paired it with the gray jeans, a layer from the chaps, which compliments the jacket. It is definitely an everyday jacket, which can be worn with some great accessories like a necklace. No matter which combination of Risey Arai’s amazing items you decide, you can not go wrong!

The First Look at Second Style Island Photography by Prad Prathavi The long awaited arrival of the all new Second Style Island is upon us. This is your only chance to get a sneak preview of what the new sim looks like before the grand re-opening on February 12th 2010. You can see our lovely new park in the center of the sim, as well as catching a glimpse at what our new stores look like. The sim is loaded with places for photo opportunities, complete with pose balls! You will also be able to rez while visiting, and take landmarks to your favorite shops. Many thanks to our amazing building team Ambiance, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve taken our visions and brought them to fruition. On February 12th the sim will be open for business, and the day will be packed with special treats! We will be giving away prizes to random shoppers all day, as well as having a DJ in the evening hours and some *special* gifts for all of the attendees. However, we will keep some of the fun a secret yet! In the meantime, please enjoy this glimpse...

LINGERIE By Luna Jubilee
Valentine’s Day coming around the corner is the perfect excuse to buy more lingerie for yourself. In this edition of the miniguide, we’ll take a look at a few lingerie brands you might not have heard of before.
DE Designs Tyran from DE Designs is a modest option that is part of a multi-piece outfit. You can wear it by itself as lingerie or incorporate it with other parts including pants and skirts. The lingere is available by itself as well, but not in all colors. Shown: DE Tyran Outfit, 499L (invidual lingerie 225L).
5th & Oxford 5th & Oxford’s Little Miss line was one of the brand’s first clothing offerings, and is one of my favorite lingerie sets. Zaara Intimates Zaara’s first foray into lingerie, the Kanti set delivers all of her signature bold colors and beautiful texture work in a sexy package that covers just the right amount. Fishy Strawberry At first glance, this set from Fishy Strawberry offers the most coverage of all the sets featured, but a closer look shows it’s actually the most revealing. Have you ever wondered how long a piece took a designer? What went into the piece? I found a few designers from around the grid and photographed them in a few of their favorite pieces as well as interviewed them about the time and effort that went into the design. Sachi Vixen, designer at Adam & Eve in SL, presented me with her Rosamund wedding dress along with one of her own skins and hair designs. Adam & Eve is a store in SL that caters to an avatar head to toe – both men and women. Adam & Eve has been previously contracted in Second Life by major corporations to work on such Second Life projects as the Transformers sim (Sachi and her partner Damen made Megan Fox’s avatar as well as Michael Bay’s, and the gigantic Megatron that existed at the sim) and the avatar costumes for the famous movie “300” starring Gerard Butler at the “300” sim.

Tenshi Vielle: So tell me about this wonderful dress... and I think that skin and hair is yours as well, isn’t it? sachi Vixen: yes they all are, the skin is Amanda which is one of my new skins, with enhanced cleavage, the hair is Darci in golden which is my favourite colour. Its a mixture of sculpts and regular prims. The dress is called Rosamund and its named after my real life best friends daughter. Its a bridal gown but I’d wear it for period too, I like the accents and the saprkles on the texture. Rosamund is amazing, procotious little girl with asbergers and she’s amazing to be around. I love her name because its romantic. Tenshi Vielle: What about the creation of the dress? Where did the idea start, what kind of efforts do you go into creating the piece? sachi Vixen: I made the dress after spending the day with Rosamund and her mother, she said I should make a princess dress and I don’t many bridal dresses so I started out by making a silk under dress in photoshop. I made a sparkle layer to lay over the top and decided to make pink accents because pink is a very girly colour. The little pink roses are actually photos of a rose I have on a little silk bag in my bedroom I make lacy and sparkly over lays by drawing a shape and then distorting it.Then when I’m happy I’ll flood fill a blank canvas and start again. I do this process several times, turning and changing and using warp until I have a look I want. When I am satisfied with my over lays I’ll lay them on top of the silk fabric I’ve made. Tenshi Vielle: About how long would you say the dress took you, time wise, from start to finish? sachi Vixen: A gown like this would take me one to 2 days, about 16-20 hours. Often there is a lot of hand work involved, particularly when making lacy things. I tend to make a ton. There are always things you discover during the process and thing that’s not right for now, but I’ll keep it for later. Tenshi Vielle: In general, how long does it take to create skins and hair for you? sachi Vixen: Well a new skin range (new body) takes a few months development. I can probably do a new collection, new face etc in about a week, maybe 3 or 4 days... I might make 8 faces but the overall body would be similar. It lakes longer to develop a good body. I can make a hair in a day, but if it has new sculpts it will be longer. Maybe a couple of days to develop those. When you make new hair textures you are talking about a month to make them, colours, different alpha options etc, but obviously once done you’d reuse those.

Katey Coppola, pose maker in Second Life, has provided poses for Linden Lab’s SL6B, (Second Life’s 6th Birthday Party in-world) and recently won “Best Pose Maker” award by the blog/mag Vain, Inc. She is presenting five “curvy” poses she has made for people with larger avatars. Tenshi Vielle: Katey, how much effort goes into your poses? What’s your creative process? Katey Coppola: Making a pose is the easy part - I use a combination of Poser and Qavimator depending on what it is I’m doing. If any readers would like to try it, Ryker Beck’s tutorials for Qavimator are amazing. It’s figuring out what to make that’s the hard bit. My friend Kendra said she wanted some pin up poses, which I had always steered clear of because they’ve been done before and very well, and it was around the same time that Glamour magazine started featuring “plus size” models. I figured it would be so useful to people to have poses with variations, so that their hands wouldn’t jam through their hips just because they choose for their avatar to represent a more curvy woman. It was a bit of a nightmare to do - a pose takes me about ten minutes to make, but then I go throughrepeated uploads and tweaks inworld and that can take ages. But I love doing this, making flexible poses and seeing how people interpret them, and I’m just really happy that curvier avatars can put their hands on their hips without performing surgery on themselves. Tenshi Vielle: Okay, so it takes you about an hour or two to make one pose? Katey Coppola: An hour, yeah Tenshi Vielle: have you done any major SL projects? Katey Coppola: I collaborate with people a lot though, which I loooove doing. And I supplied a lot of poses for SL6B which were apparently littered around the place for people to take pics with. Tenshi Vielle: So Linden Lab contracted you for that? And you won VAIN best poses, didn’t you? Katey Coppola: Naw no contracts, there were just a few days where there were tons of Lindens in my store, declining giftcards when I tried to send them. Yeah! Vain gave me best couples poses, which was insane. So honoured, it probably doesn’t seem like a big deal to anyone else but because it was all voted for by their readers, it felt like an awesome validation of the time I’ve spent working on my store.

Emma Gilmour owns Surf Shack Co. and also works for Armidi as Hudsen Armidi, doing contracted work for them in Second Life. Surf Shack Company (also known as Surf Couture) has been around in Second Life since 2007. Emma’s older, first shop designs can be found at the Gnubie store in Second Life. She is showing a dress and flip-flops from Surf Co. Emma Gilmour: This dress.. it took me about 3 days. The sculpts took the longest, I finished all the texturing in about a day Tenshi Vielle: How many hours? Emma Gilmour: well i’ll say on day 1 i took about 4 hours doing the sculpts... on day 2 i took about 3 more hours tweaking the sculpts and getting the right lighting on them... on day 3 i did all textures for the dress and the sculpts... probably total 20 hours of work for this, spread over 3 days. Emma Gilmour: Yes. Those took me probably about the same amount of time, getting the sculpts right... i’d say in the ballpark of 20 hours. I was inspired by dirty old flipflops in my closet :) Only i think the sandals spread that 20 hours over about a week, instead of 3 days as the dress was.

Kesseret Steeplechase has been in Second Life for a long time. She has owned Kess Kreations for several years, making fancy, perfect jewelry pieces. This year she opened Hilarious, her clothing branch. She is exhibiting a necklace and a ring she made for Kess Kreations, and a coat she created for Hilarious. Tenshi Vielle: Okay, let’s start with the necklace, ring, then coat. Tell me what inspired you, what you had to do to make the piece, how long it took you. Kesseret Steeplechase: Necklace: I love making lockets. I don’t know why, but they fascinate me. What inspired this one was a timepiece I had bought a long time ago. I am sure it’s long since lost but I always wanted to add gemstones and flare to it so I thought I’d just make it. To make the piece I have the same creative process- I draw a picture of the item- roughly- they never look the same. I start to make objects in my head- that I do while working or cleaning, it’s good mind exercise. Then I sit down and make it. This necklace took maybe an hour, I spend most of the time lining up my textures and making sure the script works right. Kesseret Steeplechase: Ring: this ring is probably 2 years old now. It’s one of the first rings I made. This one took 3 hours I was so anal about how it was put together. My husband got tired of hearing the clicking of the mouse when I made this. It was originally going to be a wedding ring for me to wear but I ended up selling it. It is loosely based off my grandmother’s wedding set and I named it after my sister- who happens to carry my grandmothers name - Frances. (the ring is called Mary Frances) Kesseret Steeplechase: The coat was inspired by the fact that I read somewhere that military coats were going to be ‘in’ winter 2009. Were they? Who knows I honestly still wear the same coat I got in 2000! Anyway, so I thought about this one a lot. I wanted it to swing “just right” but I don’t like long coats (I’m short in both lives) so I wanted it to be short. The coat took me about 2 hours. The hardest part was the prims. I wear a shape just for fitting stuff because my shape is not the norm in SL Tenshi Vielle: Hour-wise, how long did each piece take you? Kesseret Steeplechase: each piece takes between 1 - 3 hours total. That’s total work. Sometimes I put stuff away for a time period... the necklace took me about an hour to make in SL. The ring took 3 hours just to align the prims, and the coat took about two hours in photoshop. I mostly think it out in my head for a long time... so I’ve drawn the coat in my head already- it’s just a matter of photoshop. I totally wish I could run my computer with my brain! We will wrap up this piece exhibiting the efforts of Second Life’s content creators with Vintage McMillan, a relatively new creator with an amazing accessories shop called Epoque. Vintage showed me a pair of sunglasses she is particularly proud of. Tenshi Vielle: What was your inspiration, what’s your building process, how long did it take you? Vintage McMillan: Well my inspiration was a pair of glasses was pair that I own in real life. I have cheapycheap plastic ones that I have, but the real style has been around for ages. I really really like the handle detail, and I knew that was going to be a big tackle. Tenshi Vielle: They remind me of mid-50s style. Vintage McMillan: Right – big, obnoxious old lady glasses! So normally I make the frame and lens sculpts, hop on a pose stand, and situate them on my face. From there I just pop on the handles and attach everything, but I had the handle sculpts to do. In all, I think this pair took me about 3-4 hours.
Creators put a lot of love and effort into their stores. Please support them by only purchasing from known, legitimate stores in Second Life. When in doubt, use Google – search for the store name and “Second Life”, or the creator name and “Second Life”. Many blogs keep track of content theft, and using Google before purchasing from an unknown store is one step closer to minimizing content theft and boosting the sales of our legitimate, creative content creators.
