The fact that more than 70 percent of all young children who begin participating in youth sports quit by the age of 12 is appalling. Unfortunately, there are signs that this percentage may continue to grow, resulting in an even more sedentary lifestyle than ever for an increasing number of kids.

TIME FOR A CHANGE

• Kids are seeing no significant improvement in their skills and on-field performance. • Practices are disorganized and boring. • Too many kids are sitting on the bench with little or no opportunity to play. • There is a 15 percent chance that violence will break out at youth games or practices. • There is a greater than 70 percent chance that your child will drop out of organized team sports by the age of 12.

Perhaps, like me, you are the parent of a young child and worry about how your child will fare when he or she is ready to participate in sports. With all the negative events that occur today on our children’s playing fields, the time has come for a new and proven structure that eliminates all of the off-putting aspects from youth sports and, instead, emphasizes the positive. It’s time for real solutions – not discussions – and the solutions lie in a

Whether it’s to relive their childhood experiences or erase past athletic disappointments, some parents expect their children to excel to compensate for their own inadequacies. In order to see any improvements in youth sports, we must stop forcing kids to play adult versions of games.

here is a gaping wound in youth sports that has created a much ignored crisis. I’m referring to society’s outrageous need to take our children and create champions, MVPs and select or travel team players.

FORGET THE SCOREBOARD On October 25th, FAIR PLAY DAY, parents are being asked to forget the scoreboard and consider several non-traditional, yet tested and successful, new approaches to youth sports. Imagine for a moment a season of no games, yet plenty of healthy competition where every child plays and improves his or her skills. Discover an entirely new format for practicing that enhances every child’s ability and advances everyone to the next skill level. Take these suggested approaches and adapt them to your child’s league, discuss them with other parents or apply them to your own recreation time with your children.

GET INVOLVED

Rather than stand on the sidelines watching, become engaged as a teacher of the game. Approach your child’s league with other parents and ask to be assigned different teaching responsibilities at each practice. Gather the correct tools to teach one or two skills within an organized structure for an entire season. You will become a useful resource for your kids and help create a better and more interactive learning environment for everyone.

Individualism and creativity are missing from traditional organized sports – another reason kids get disenchanted and drop out. Letting them create their own games or work on the skill of their choice gives them an ownership stake in their own development. It makes for happy kids and happy parents.

Forget tradition. Rather than conducting single team practices, approach your child’s league about setting aside one day or evening each week in which the entire league gets together and conducts a skill-oriented practice session or clinic. As a parent volunteer, you can attend and participate with other parents and be given assigned responsibilities to teach specific fundamentals.

LET KIDS COACH

The most important role of any parent or coach is to teach and prepare players for eventual competition. Empower kids and coach them to manage their own game experiences. You will be greatly rewarded in witnessing your child taking on this responsibility, and you will be teaching your team a valuable skill. As a coach, if you have taught the game properly, there is no need for you to hang close by at game time. Take an active role as an advisor during games (timeouts, halftimes, between innings, etc.) to teach with positive reinforcement.

PARENT REPRESENTATIVE

Most parents find themselves frustrated with their child’s sports experience, yet they struggle to find tactful ways to approach the coach to create a dialogue and make suggestions. Gather all team parents together and discuss your observations and concerns. Then assign one person to sit down with the coach to talk it over. This will provide valuable feedback to a coach and open a line of communication that will prevent future misunderstandings. By following these suggestions, parents can help return youth sports to what they are supposed to be: a chance to learn new skills, develop teamwork and self-esteem and just have fun.

What do you like the most about living in Port Isabel? I like visiting the Lighthouse and that I get to volunteer at the Sea Life Center. Also, I like that we live so close to the beach.

What’s the best part of being a Girl Scout? The best part about being a girl scout is the opportunity to earn badges. Also, I like that we participate in fun activities like hiking and camping.

My role model is Heather Patterson. She is my mentor at the Sea Life Center. She teaches me about different sea animals. She has taught me why it’s important to protect the marine animals and environment.

What part about being a kid do you think you will miss the most when you grow up? I think I’ll miss my parents buying me everything I want and cooking for me. When I grow up I’ll have to do everything for myself.

This bento box is a lock&lock 4 squarebox that can be bought off of Amazon. It was customized by removing 2 upper boxes where the half sandwich is placed. The “ABC 123” was made with alphabet cutters and fruit leather. The bottom boxes held pretzels with apple-shaped marble cheese, and sliced cucumbers with 2 baby tomatoes with leaf picks.

The clear container can be bought off of easylunchboxes.com. The larger section of the lunch box held a turkey bologna sandwich that was made into a puzzle using white and brown bread with a puzzle-shaped lunch punch. The other sections held a gray silicone muffin cup with sliced baby carrots and a giraffe pick and some mini crackers with a mini baby bel cheese with the letter ‘C’ cut out of the wax using my mini metal alphabet cutters.

This piggy bento box can be bought off of Ebay. For the piggy sandwich, a cutter from Cutezcute was used. On the other side of the divider there are flower cut cucumbers, sliced baby carrots and a piggy pick.

This long rectangular bento box can be bought off of allthingsforsale.com. The car-shaped sandwiches were made with vehicle cutters. The other tier has 2 rectangle silicone containers, one with car-shaped cucumbers and the other with sliced baby carrots.

Establish lines of communication and talk for at least 15 minutes a day. Bullying can be difficult for parents to talk about, but it is important that children know they can talk to you, before they are involved in bullying in any way.

Make sure kids know safe ways to be more than a bystander. When kids witness bullying, it can affect them too. Helping kids learn what they can do to help when they see bullying can help to stop bullying. Click here for more suggestions on how bystanders can help.

Know your stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anti-bullying law and your schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s anti-bullying policy. Fortynine states have laws requiring schools to have anti-bullying policies. Know what your school policy says and how to report an incident of bullying if you ever need to.

Learn how to support kids involved in bullying. When you find out your child is involved in bullying, it is important to know how to respond. Whether your child is bullying others or is the one being bullied it is important to know what steps to take, and which to avoid, in order to resolve the situation.

eedless to say, the creation of an entire new display is both exciting and challenging. From concept to final product, this type of task sets into motion a lot of hard work and planning by many dedicated individuals. Such is the case with the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center. More than thirty years ago Martha Russell, a great Zoo supporter, Board Member and patroness, made it possible for the Zoo to create a small aquatic exhibit adjacent to the Herpetarium. The original intent was to provide Zoo visitors a glimpse at, and a chance to learn about, the unique diversity of the marine and freshwater creatures that occur in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and the adjacent waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The former Aquatic Wing did its job well. Continuing in Martha’s tradition of philanthropy, the present Russell family saw that a larger exhibit was much needed. On busy days, many visitors could not even get into the former exhibit because it was so crowded. Martha’s son, James, a former Valley Zoological Society (VZS) president and current Director on the VZS Board and

the Valley Zoological Endowment Board, is turning the idea into bricks and mortar, pumps and filters, and sharks and rays! The new Russell Aquatic Ecology Center is more than five times larger than the original exhibit and will have a traffic flow pattern and air handling system conducive to efficiently serve larger crowds.

Local artist, C.J. Mire, designed and fabricated the metal figures and letters that adorn the front of the Russell Aquatic Ecology Center.

When I described to him what I envisioned for the front of the building, Mr. Jaross said, “I know just the artist that can do that, and I will underwrite it.” Mr. Jaross was right. A few days later, my wife, Carol (a wildlife artist), and I met in Port Isabel, Texas with Mr. C.J. Mire of Laguna Madre Coastal Art. Looking around his art studio, we were overwhelmed with the quality and creativity of his work. C.J. offered several concepts and we ended up with a fantastic design
