NU STUDENT CENTER Ruggles Station Boston, MA Innovative Wood Construction This project challenges the structural limits of a typical post-and-lintel wooden structure. The span capabilities increased exponentially, with the help of glue-laminated wood and a gridshell structure. The roof creates an open floor plan with unobstructed view, which allows sunlight to penetrate through the building and enables the school to hold various events at different scale.

GRIDSHELL - Shearing Support
node
lath shear block
normal force
I. Double layer to increase thickness and support
17
II. Distortion happens when force is not applied in the direction of the lath
III. Gridshell can only resist forces along its load path
CONCEPTUALIZING ROOF FORM
single dome
series of dome
voided domes, result in vault-like structure
recreating vaults with gridshell columns
widened columns to acheive longer span, and free up spaces on the plan
LOAD PATH
compression tension
GRIDSHELL - Mesh Geometry
HEXAGONAL GRID - 6 nodes - 3 layer gridshell - tighter grid pattern - can resist forces perpendicular to member
NU Student Center
LATTICE GRID - 4 nodes - 2 layer gridshell - looser grid pattern - cannot resist shear force
