Activity One: ‘WORKSHOP EXERCISE’
We were asked to make a beam with 2 different type wood materials. One of them is a thin plywood board and the other is pine.
Constructing process
Crack easily
Not easy to crack
We top-nailed the plywood board using square-headed cut nails
Constructing Process
We fixed short pine in the above plywood board
When our beam was under force‌‌. The first crack appeared on the top pine wood.
Then the sheets and the bottom timber cracked as well. The cracks on the sheets are different to shoes on pine wood, because of the internal shear forces.
It was interesting that the bottom timber wasn’t cracked in the middle were force applied, instead it cracked along the wood knot
