Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols?
Symbols (e.g. a thropy) is a formal representation of an object. But as part of signs, their form and content are detached, having no binding relationship. The relationship between the two is “totally arbitrary and immaterial”. In contrast, diagrams act as a bridge between physical constructs of and object and its intangible or conceptual aspects. As stated by Polo, a diagram is a “tool that describes relationships and prescribes perfoemances in space” and possesses “spatial correlation”.

The 2018 MPavilion by Carme Pinรณs has taken inspiration from origami. It becomes an interesting play of tilts and rotations to create an implied idea of folding paper. When modelling this pavilion in Rhino, it is important to be organized in terms of layers and grouping objects. Each group of object has a unique position and/ or arrangement in the structure. For example, the roof consists of two same shapes but each with their own direction and degree of tilt. The landscape also needs to be modelled as they are part of the pavilion design and structure. The detail lays on the timber cladding of the roof and walls. It is necessary to pay attention to the directions of the timber to create the same effect of light filtering which is key to this pavilion.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use.
Design should allow a degree of flexibility to facilitate different programs within the site. Carme Pinós’ MPavilion creates a sheltered open space fit for talks, small performances, and casual meetups. The design, along with the landscape, creates a secluded and intimate area which supports a condusive environment for conversations and discussions. With the filtered lighting, the pavilion becomes more welcoming and casual, as it is stilll a part of a leisure park.

Week Two
Isometric
Carme Pinรณs - MPavilion 2018 Shown here is a North-West isometric view of the pavilion, chosen to show the main entrace area. The design includes main structure of walls and roof, timber cladding details, and lanscape manipulation. Joined together, especially the structure and cladding arrangements, they create shade with interesting filtering of light. Straight away after observing photographs of the pavilion, the arrangement of timbers drew much attention in terms of starting the 3D modelling. True to this, the working drawings of the roof structure used as reference include a few different layers. Thresholds are apparent, both explicitly and implicitly. The two walls and the three elevated landscape spots provide clear and subtle thresholds respectively. However, the roof acts as the main threshold in this pavilion. Users of the space are led to define being in the pavilion area by determining whether or not they are under the roof. Circulation is denser in the main entrance area through to the shaded under-the-roof area. It is mainly showing movements of people in looking for seating areas within the pavilion. Hence, circulation is more static and slow.

Threshold formed by the landscape, wall structure, and roof structure. They act as a transition from the park into the pavilion and the other way around. Main threshold is in the roof and its detail, creating a filtered shaded area.
