NEWSLETTER Lisbon Meeting 5-10 December 2011
CEMS – THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE IN MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
SB Meeting
A word from the Executive Team Dear CEMSies, We’re already a couple of months into the New Year but we are very keen on wishing you all the best as we welcome you to this first Student Board Newsletter of 2012. Firstly, I’d like to take a moment to look back, giving us a chance to thank Marco Proto and Fredrik Ahlberg, the former Executive Team, for their priceless contribution to the network. By focusing on two objectives of visibility and equality they have managed to achieve lasting results and they have influenced the way the Student Board will work from now on. The Student Board recently met in Lisbon at the end of the year for the last meeting of 2011. As our meeting coincided with the Annual Events, it offered an opportunity to discuss running projects and develop new ones, together with all the members and key decision-makers of the alliance. We would especially like to thank Wolseley & McKinsey, two longstanding partners, as well as NOVA SBE for hosting and interacting with us, and contributing to the success of this meeting. Seeing the clear commitment and dedication of the members on the board, we aim to continue to raise student voices in view of improving what we hear is relevant to you. As we rely on your input, we can’t emphasise enough for you to get in touch with your representatives or to respond to our surveys. The projects carried out are relevant to the entire community and this year we want to put even more emphasis on the involvement of all the members of the CEMS alliance in our projects and in ensuring a tangible dimension to the values of “responsible leadership” that we uphold. For those of you that read us for the first time, you will see new projects being laid out for you in this edition, but if you peek a little further you will also know which activities and regional events you will attend in the coming months. I bet we will be in touch soon! CEMSly Yours, William Coupé (LSM) President
Mihaela Pisau (CBS) Vice President/Treasurer
Update from MIM Affairs The MIM Affairs team approached the Lisbon meeting with the enthusiasm and happiness that always characterises the SB meetings. We were well aware that our leader and good friend Ă lvaro would be leaving us but, besides wishing him good luck with his future endeavours, we were determined to keep up the good work. In the end we did not receive any new members and that only left the two of us, Romain and Tommaso. We took this opportunity to refocus: MIM Affairs has been carrying on several projects, such as the feedback reports (on skill seminars and internships) and the feedback/workshop/suggestions to improve CCM, for a long time and we felt we needed to bring those to an end and move on. We sent our results to the Head Office and from now we will be following up and monitoring whether our advice has been followed and what other improvements can be adopted. The two main projects we have in the pipeline now are a survey on the use of the standard grading system, to see how many schools actually use it and what is the opinion of the teachers, and a comprehensive report, to update the HO on what some of the biggest complaints of students are at the moment: perhaps more action is needed to deliver a truly unique CEMS experience. Coordination with the HO is essential, especially because they may have more updated and detailed data than we are able to collect. We will track the progress the progress of the finished projects mentioned above, to coordinate the ones in the pipeline, and to find new ways in which we can collaborate and through which MIM Affairs can contribute to the CEMS community.
Wishing you all the best for a great 2012! MIM Affairs Get in touch with MIM Affairs? Contact Tommaso Loviscek (tommaso.loviscek@cemsmail.org)

CEMS Social Responsibility Team The CSR team’s main project during the Lisbon meeting was the Global Values Statement (GVS). In the weeks prior to the meeting the team had worked out the logistics of the signing and handing over of the GVS which took place during the graduation ceremony. Launched last year the GVS states: As a lifelong member of the CEMS community, I hereby commit to uphold and be guided by the following principles: The pursuit of excellence with the highest standards of integrity, humility, and ethical conduct. Professional responsibility and accountability in relation to society and the environment Drawing upon the value of cultural diversity with respect and empathy
Currently the CSR team is working among others on the following projects: CSR Booklet: We are collecting stories about CSR activity at all CEMS schools. These will be made into a booklet and distributed around schools. If you have been involved in a socially responsible project and you want to tell your story – get in touch at cems.csr.booklet@gmail.com! SENStation Social Business Competition: We’re helping the SENStation team in promoting the Social Business Competition that they are running this year! You can find more detail about this competition at www.senstation.org or by joining the dedicated Facebook group called “CEMS Social Business Competition at SENStation”.
My decisions and actions, both now and in the future, will reflect this Commitment to Global Citizenship that I make here today. In 2010 98% of graduands who received their diploma on stage signed the statement. In 2011 the rate remained constant– at 98%. Besides the GVS project the Lisbon meeting was also particularly exciting for the CSR team because of the first ever chance to meet with representatives from two of CEMS’ Social Partners. We got the chance to meet both with a representative from the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations as well as Transparency International. It was a great pleasure to meet these people in person.
If you have any questions or suggestions related to socially responsible matters please feel free to write an email to Roser Preuss – the current team leader – at roser.preuss@cemsmail.org.
Get your running shoes out… and go
Last December, at the graduation ceremony in Lisbon, some of us were lucky enough to be there to hear a graduating NOVA student speak about his view of the CEMS experience. He was focusing on the new challenges that are taken up by CEMS student across the globe. The aim to realise exceptional things outside of the boardroom and the classroom is indeed something that brings us together. Many of us aspire to cover the largest possible part of the planet at some point in their life. I have friends who hiked some of the tops of the seven summits, who are triathlethes or who still practice a sport at an exceptional level. More exceptionally, they do this while working in challenging industries or achieving strong results in class. From what I see here, we are more than just high achievers in the class- or boardroom. For more info on who’s running where and what (half-)marathons we could do together, join CEMS RUNNERS CEMS RUNNERS Facebook
To still your hunger in the coming months, we suggest going together for one of the challenges that might be on a large number of our lists… finishing a marathon! In some cities, members of the alliance, both alumni and students are already practicing. You will find more info on the Facebook group of CEMS RUNNERS. Looking at your fitness level? When will you be ready to take it on?
AGENDA Vienna City Marathon (15/4) Milan City Marathon (15/4) Barcelona Marathon (25/3)

Marketing & Communication On behalf of the Marketing and Communication Team, first I would like to wish you the best in the year 2012! I am Béatrice Hu, HEC Student Board representative and new team leader of the M&C team, and I am very happy to welcome Iveta Novakova from Prague and Pavol Dzurjanin from Rotterdam to our team. They both joined us at the Student Board meeting in Lisbon in December. We are very proud to present you our projects for the next year! One of the main tasks of the Marketing and Communication team is to offer you the opportunity to purchase CEMS branded objects. Given the recent feedback we received, we realised that the quality of the merchandise could use an upgrade, as could the designs. This is why we are undertaking two initiatives. First we are going to improve the quality of the clothing articles by changing our supplier. Second we are launching a Design Competition in January to upgrade our offering of CEMS Hoodies and CEMS T-Shirts. The competition will start before the 15th of January. All CEMSies are welcome to post a design or to vote on the Facebook page of the competition: CEMS Design Competition. The winner will get a 100€ prize to be spent in the online shop or to help reimburse travel expenses for one of the CEMS events taking place this year (regional events, sport tournament, next Career Fair, …) So be ready to post awesome designs !

For the first time this year we are also all going to invite you all to the Mercuriales which is the international sport tournament in HEC! The tournament will take place on 3rd-5th May on the HEC campus near Paris. It is going to be all about sport and partying! There are different sports available: football, handball, basketball, volleyball and rugby. You will be invited to set up teams across the whole CEMS cohort, which means that you can team up with people either from your own university or from any other CEMS school. The prize including accommodation, food, and entrance to the two parties will be around €130. We hope that many of you will register for this amazing opportunity to have fun with other CEMSies. Finally, we would like to remind you that you can share your CEMS experiences or advertise for CEMS events through the official Facebook and Google+ CEMS pages by sending us an e-mail to this address: cemsfacebookmessage@gmail.com. You just have to send the text and the link you want to publish and we will upload it for you. Examples of such notifications are invitations to an event hosted by your local CEMS Club, CEMS activity/course/skill seminar that took place in your country, link to a picture gallery of such events etc. Also we are more than happy to upload CEMS-related and funny group picture. Help us enhance the CEMS Spirit! We do hope that our projects will be successful and that you will take full advantage of them! The Marketing and Communication Team.
Globalisation The Globalisation team is off to a dynamic start during its first term of inception! After welcoming two new members, the team established a new mission statement: “Globalisation fosters equality among CEMS academic members and students worldwide by facing the challenges that the globalisation of the CEMS alliance brings about, both of an academic and extracurricular nature. In the spirit of this mission statement, the Globalisation team is currently working to analyze where the inequalities lie within the CEMS alliance. The team has chosen to prioritise three main issues: student housing, corporate partnerships and student experience. For the past few weeks, the Globalisation team has been working closely with Niels van Deuren from Housing Anywhere to work on the establishment of a CEMS-exclusive Housing Anywhere portal to help alleviate some of the headaches involved with finding housing for CEMS students on exchange.
Through Corporate Partner Mapping the team is hoping to make sure that the ties forged with current corporate partners are strong through the network. Through the mapping, the Globalisation team will be working closely with the corporate partner liaisons at each CEMS university in order to better understand each schools connection with corporate partners and how CEMS Head Office can aid in increasing corporate partner presence at each school. We hope that this project will not only increase the visibility of CEMS within our corporate partners worldwide but also that it will help to leverage currently untapped sources for business projects, internships and workshops. The Student Experience Survey will be launched this January to the entire CEMS student population. Through the survey, the Globalisation team is hoping to gain insights from students that attended non-EU universities on exchange or as a home school and benchmark those experiences against their time at EU universities. More broadly, the survey aims to get a feeling from the general CEMS student population for how they would like to see CEMS expand. How do you want CEMS to grow? This is YOUR chance to have your voice heard!

CEMS Club Support The Lisbon meeting brought the members of the team together after finishing two big projects: CEMS Club Conference held in Budapest and CEMS Club Award. Both projects were very successful and resulted in valuable insights that inspire the team to continue its efforts and innovate in providing support for the CEMS Clubs around the world. The CEMS Club Conference was successfully arranged in November before the Career Forum in Budapest. The team is proud to have gathered 24 presidents out of 26 to discuss the challenges and share experience with each other. Here the Student Board was given the opportunity to listen to the experiences of all the Clubs and enable the exchange of best practices, find opportunities for better communication and a lot more. We had great interaction with the corporate partners, including sessions with Google and P&G and everyone left the conference with new insights and ideas for future work. As a direct result of the conference the CCS team was inspired to develop an integration and communication platform kindly offered by Podio that will bring all clubs together and remove boarders for communication enabling knowledge sharing between the clubs. This platform is currently being tested by the team, who would like to take the opportunity to thank the students from Copenhagen Business School for sharing their network and putting us in contact with Podio. The CCS also organised the CEMS Club Awards for 2011, and the CEMS Club from the University of Economics in Prague won the prize this year. We would like to thank all of the students who voted, and congratulate this year’s top three clubs from the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Netherlands. The results of the Awards will be sent to the individual Clubs to provide feedback on their strong points, and also to point out possible areas for improvement. Through this work we hope to enhance the CEMS experience for the next generation of CEMSies.
The main goal of our work is to improve the communication and integration between the Clubs, the presidents and the Student Board. As the CEMS network continues to expand, this is becoming an even more important focus and the team is now getting used to working across different time zones. This will definitely be a useful experience when we help start up the CEMS Club in Japan, the newest academic partner of the network and an exciting addition to the community. The team is also continuing to provide individual Clubs, and each Club should now have a dedicated contact person to the team. Unfortunately, the meeting in Lisbon was the last for two of our devoted members, Sarah Unkelbach and Fabian Schrank, who have contributed greatly to the CCS over the last year. They will continue to support us in the beginning of 2012 and make sure that there is continuity in the work of the team. We would like to thank them for the amazing job they have done and promise that all the projects will be fulfilled. A new member, Lise Jokstad Hafskjold, joined the team, and the CCS is ready for an interesting and challenging new year. The team is looking forward to working with you in 2012. All the best from your CEMS Club Support team Sarah, Fabian, Nadya, Annie & Lise
