Dear reader, Welcome to the second Student Board Newsletter of 2012! In this newsletter we are reporting on the latest news from the Student Board. The first week of October was a chance to hold our second meeting of the year. This meeting took place in Prague and was hosted by the University of Economics Prague. We also had the chance to meet and interact with Corporate Partners ŠKODA AUTO and SABMiller. This interaction between Corporate Partners, Academics and students enabled us to clarify our roles as SB Representatives and to discuss the possibilities for further improvements. A highlight of the week was to meet the new CEMS Executive Director Roland Siegers and to learn more about his plans for the coming years. It was highly motivating for us to see some of our recommendations based on student’s voices being realized in the future strategy. Besides the ongoing work from our five teams that you will discover in the next pages we also worked together with Vojtěch Opleštil, president of the CAA Prague, to see how we can to intensify the student-alumni relations on the local and global level. Other topics of focus were the CEMS Business Project, the launch of a CEMS Phone Application and the cooperation with Social Partners. With Corporate Partners ŠKODA AUTO and SABMiller we discussed avenues of potential cooperation and how to build an effective employer branding strategy with CEMS students. Next to the news from the Student Board, you will find at the end of this newsletter a set of tips that will help you make the most out of the online resources CEMS provides. Our guess is that you will be in for a surprise! If you have any questions, ideas, suggestions please share them with us, because we are here to represent you and to improve the CEMS experience. Hoping you will enjoy the read, we look forward to seeing you at the Career Forum in Budapest or at the Annual Events in St. Gallen. Mihaela Pisau VP/Treasurer

CEMS Club Support Team

During our meeting in Prague we used our valuable time working on several projects, which will contribute to your social and professional activities during your CEMS year now: This is the fifth year in the running that we are organizing the CEMS Club Conference for all CEMS club presidents in Budapest. We will work with both Social and Corporate partners on issues such as building better interactions between the different schools and countries and how these partners can be more involved surpassing borders of their home countries. Additionally, we will also discuss ways to forge better IntraCEMS Collaborations between students, the students board, and CEMS Head office.

In times of Podio and LinkedIn virtual teams gain a stronger importance. Nobody knows this better than us, the Student Board. 97% of our work in SB we spent with our fellows from around the world, using e-mail or skype in order to finish our projects and to share future ideas about the development of CEMS.

We will keep you updated on what is going on in the conference and we are also looking forward to your feedback and your ideas about this event. So give us a heads up if you know how to enrich CEMS social and business experiences by sending us an e-mail.

4

In April 2012, we launched Podio for the Student Board and CEMS Club Presidents, a social media workspace and knowledge sharing platform designed to facilitate more effective interaction and work experience in virtual teams. We hope that in the long term we will be able to provide access of this powerful tool to every CEMS Clubs all around the world.

We are also proud to announce that CEMS Club Award 2012 is ready for launch within the next few days. Always claimed as the event of the year for all CEMS Clubs, this is where the top three CEMS Clubs will receive the highest accolades for the year, hopefully in St Gallen Annual Event. So inform your home school CEMS Club and get ready for it!

Lise will be with us till the end of CCC 2012 and we look forward to meet the whole team again in Budapest. Again, we welcome any suggestions and do contact us by sending an email to cems-club-support-team@cemsmail.org.

Last but not least, we would also like to thank and say goodbye to one of our most valuable members, Lise Jokstad Hafskjold. She has been an efficient team leader with specific portfolio of leading CEMS Club Conference 2012, Regional Events communication, and club coaching. At the same time, we would like to welcome our new member in CCS team, Guillaume Chapuis who will take over a part of Lise’ portfolio from December onwards.

Sincerely yours, CCS Team CCS MEMBER Chris Damla Dennis Guillaume/Lise

CEMS Social Responsibility (CSR) Team

The Prague meeting was an important meeting for the CSR team, since the Annual Events in St. Gallen are drawing closer. The major focus for the next few months will be the organisation and promotion of the Global Values Statement, GVS. Also, our team has evolved in the past few months, as we had one leaving member while Yekaterina and Sangram joined Sarianne and Cristina in the team. Thus Prague allowed us to create new bonds and to add fresh ideas for future projects.

In addition, the second edition of the CSR booklet will be published early next year. Prague was an important milestone in the process, since the CSR team had a chance to catch up with members from other CEMS schools and hear what kind of CSR related activities have taken place around the world. There is still time for contributions, so if you know of a cool project happening in your school, please contact our team! Already in the last Student Board meeting in Barcelona it was also decided that in the academic year 2012-2013 there will be a central CEMS CSR theme, “Education. In the past few months we have worked on explaining the theme to the CEMS community and providing ideas for projects. In Prague we had a chance to collect some initial feedback and plan our activities further. We hope to see many CSR projects related to the central theme this year.

CURRENT PROJECTS: GVS - Internship opportunity with CEMS Social Partners CSR Booklet 2012 - CEMS CSR theme projects - CEMS CSR on LinkedIn Our team is also building -together with the CEMS Head Office- a platform for active dialogue and sharing of ideas on LinkedIn for everyone in the CEMS community interested in CSR. We hope to see the community grow in the future, so please join the discussion at the CEMS Social Responsibility LinkedIn group. All in all, it was a super efficient as well as fun meeting for the CSR team. If you have any questions or suggestions related to socially responsible matters please feel free to contact us.

Globalization Team During the summer months the Globalization team had the possibility to finalize three main projects. First the CEMS Corporate Partner mapping, where we concluded that there is still room for improvement to increase the awareness of the CEMS brand. The CEMS Head Office together with us will now work on projects to turn our findings into improvements. Furthermore we looked at the partnerships with Corporate Partners on a local level and found big differences among the involvement of the Corporate Partners. We recommend to update the Corporate Partners Guide for CEMS Clubs in order to enhance interaction and leverage the advantages of the cooperation between CEMS Clubs and CPs. Finally, we helped in the selection

of new schools in Chile and South Africa and inquired insights into the problems at new joining international school to brand European schools outside of the biggest cities. The insights from these surveys are used in the CEMS Ambassador program that we just started to work on. As a quick-win after the event and with a view to sustainable globalisation, we have committed to offsetting carbon emissions from all flights by representatives to attend Student Board meetings. Rather than simply paying money to a website, we found a forward thinking Irish company and established a partnership for the future. They will offset emissions for SB and the CEMS club Dublin and in exchange Dublin CEMSies will work with Celestial Green as consultants on sustainable ventures.

8

Looking forward we are focusing on two projects. We are working hard to establish structures to ensure that the CEMS experience in the international schools can be improved. Therefore we are looking to establish the role of a CEMS Ambassador that is spending his exchange at one of the international schools in spring 2013. The Ambassador will take the opportunity to strengthen the collaboration between the visiting school, the local CEMS Club and the CEMS Head-office. Additionally we are working on the set up of a viral movie to promote CEMS to the newest generation of potential applicants. With love!! Your Globalization team! Marketing and Communication (M&C) Team The summer months passed mainly with focus on editing the latest issue of the CEMS Magazine featuring “work-life balance and in preparation for the Merchandize project. Not only the CEMS Online Store got a complete face lift, but the re-designed website presented our updated portfolio with exciting new CEMSbranded products.

For Iveta (WU) and Pavol (RSM) this was the last SB meeting but they made sure to have a flawless handover and are going to support us with their invaluable input in the future too. We are pleased to announce that we have welcomed new members: Lilli (VSE), Laura (NOVA) and Leo (Koc) have joined us. This also implies a complete turnover in the team, thus we spent quality time on involving and engaging the new-comers. The meeting was a great opportunity to evaluate our actual activities and more importantly to discuss, prioritize and agree on the concepts of the future projects. The core mission of the M&C team is to increase the visibility of CEMS inside and outside the alliance. In line with this goal we are going to further develop our social media presence and we are working on a possible CEMS mobile application. A very important workshop dealt with this app... technical requirements are to be set now!

10

We are also aiming at fostering the relations with alumni in the form of joint projects in order to help alumni and students to get closer to each other. Therefore we are running a project to show you interesting CEMS profiles, endless career possibilities and the most appreciated CEMS aspects certain years after the graduation. In addition to this we would like to improve the current SAMP (Student Alumni Mentorship Program) activities and further encourage

students and mentors about this wonderful initiative. Lastly, there is the Newsletter that you receive three times a year following the Student Board meetings. Our goal is to give you an insight about Student Board, who we are, what are we doing and a short “update” on our projects. CURRENT PROJECTS: CEMS App - SB Newsletter - SAMP 40under40 - CEMS on social media Merchandize

We would like to remind you that you will have the chance to meet the Student Board Reps and some of the members of the Alumni Association in person at our stand during the Career Forum in Budapest and ask any questions you have in mind. This will be also the stand where you can pick up your CEMS merchandize. In case you have any questions or recommendations to the M&C Team, please do contact us and highly appreciate your input! All the best, stay tuned! MIM Affairs Team The Prague meeting was an exceptionally important meeting for our MIM Affairs team. Not only did we have an opportunity to present the results of our work, but also we discussed and shared relevant ideas that have proven crucial for our current work and further formulation of the future objectives. Last but not least, the Prague meeting served as an integration event, after which

the atmosphere within the team is very dynamic and based on a very close collaboration, despite the 50% turnover of our team members in comparison to the previous meeting. In Prague MIM Affairs presented a full report on Internship Information Policy, based on the data from the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) and preliminary report on Business Project

12

evaluation conducted among CEMS MIM Students from all over the world. Apart from that, MIM Affairs team delivered a workshop session during the Prague meeting. We will now briefly provide an overview of our work. The Internship Report on information policy at SGH was based on a survey conducted among current MIM students and the

Alumni. The aim of this report was to help local CEMS Office improve its communication policy and provide set of guidelines for the MIM students concerning the process of searching and applying for an international internship. The report is available for download on CEMS Student Board Podio platform. The results of this report encouraged us to organize a workshop session, during which we collected ideas for the possible future promotion tools that will lead to the increased ratio

of students pursuing international internship and, consequently, finishing their MIM degree. Finally, our team presented initial results of the Business Project Report. The aim of that project is to come up with the set of guidelines for particular CEMS schools aimed at improving this highly important part of CEMS MIM curriculum. Additionally, we intend that this report will serve as a source of best practices for formulating and conducting future Business Projects.

CURRENT PROJECTS: Internship Report - Business Project Report The MIM Affairs team is currently working on finishing Business Project Report due the CEMS Annual Event 2012 in St Gallen. After a necessary consultation round with the CEMS Head Office, we hope to provide Academic Director with the Executive Summary of the report to facilitate implementation of recommended best practices. We look forward to meeting you during the upcoming Career Forum and the CEMS Annual Event! Luciana Coehlo, Amir Ehsani, Karol G贸rnowicz, Paula Pitol MIM-Affairs-Team@cemsmail.org

Interview with Executive Team

Mihaela Pisau VP/Treasurer

IN DECEMBER YOU ARE GOING TO HAND OVER THE PRESIDENCY TO THE NEW BOARD. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? In all honesty, when I was reading the invitation calling for applications for the new Executive Team, I felt like I would like to run again! I am glad that me and William almost made through the year (there’s still plenty to do that’s why I said almost) and I am also happy that a new team will take over bringing fresh ideas and a new boost of energy to the SB.

WHEN LOOKING BACK ON THIS YEAR WHAT IS YOUR FIRST THOUGHT AS A PRESIDENT/VP? M: First thought in two words is: Amazing Experience! Both from a personal and professional perspective. On one hand I have met so many bright people: CEMSies from all schools, current and past members of the SB, Alumni, members of the academic staff etc. On the professional side, it has been and still is a learning experience of managing teams and projects touching all sides of CEMS. WHAT MADE YOU APPLY FOR THE VICE-PRESIDENCY A YEAR AGO? M: First ideas came as I was pleasantly surprised to find that others saw in me a good candidate and recommended me to run for a position in the team. Then I felt like during my time as a student board representative for Copenhagen Business School I have gained knowledge and some experience that I could put at

work staying longer in the SB by joining William in the Executive Team. W: A firm belief of a fit with the position, an objective that the CEMS network could and can be leveraged more and a desire to develop myself further before starting my career. I GUESS YOU HAVE TREMENDOUSLY DEVELOPED BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY DURING THIS YEAR. WHAT ARE THE ASPECTS YOU WOULD POINT OUT? M: On a personal side, I have expanded my network and gained many good friends! Also learned more about my personality, and my way of working in and with teams. Professionally again I have met professionals across industries as part of our interaction with Corporate Partners. Lastly I could count the year spend in the SB as a professional experience in all, because even though it is a fun, it also implies serious work. W: I don’t know if I realise yet what

14

IN DECEMBER YOU ARE GOING TO HAND OVER THE PRESIDENCY TO THE NEW BOARD. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT? Well, this is clearly mixed. On the one hand it feels good to see that very talented and motivated individuals arrise and take up this opportunity On the other hand, I feel that Mihaela and I as a team are now at a stage where we really perform.

William Coupé President I learned over the course of this year. I’m certainly more mature and a better moderator than I was in 2011. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY THE MOST? M: I enjoyed the most attending our meetings of course, getting to meet every time with new SB members and work with teams that are constantly evolving. W: The spirit of the group. I am amazed every time I feel the intensity of the friendships I have with current and former SB members. Prague and Milan are definite highlights. WHAT IS YOUR MESSAGE TO THE NEXT BOARD? M: Divide et Impera! Share responsibilities and work as a team! Be CEMSational! W: I have plenty of things to share and I look forward to going through the transition with the new team. For now, I wish to emphasise the balance that

the next team will need to master very well between the different perspectives that exist. While thinking about these elements I invite the women and men on the next team to still remember that results are achieved through actions A bit like in the following quote: Act as a man of thought, think as a man of action (Henri-Louis Bergson) WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN? M: Of course! W: Hell yes! No single doubt about it. The fun, the people you meet and the personal development... Thinking about this I don’t feel the workload anymore. WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? M: There were a few, but maybe one of the earliest was when we got appointed during the plenary session in Lisbon. Being on the stage in front of so many people felt overwhelming.

15

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT? W: Walking into the room of the CEMS Executive Board in Lisbon, seconds before my presentation to the Deans of all the schools. I don’t usually feel stressed... but believe me I was. WHAT ACHIEVEMENT OF THE STUDENT BOARD OR OF YOUR WORK IN THE BOARD ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? M: Having mentioned Podio to the right people at the right time. W: I can’t be the one to judge on the specific achievements of the SB teams. Every team has a considerable (yet very different) impact on the CEMS Alliance. I’m proud that I will be able to present achievements from all the teams in St. Gallen. On the side of Mihaela and me, I like that we have helped the board to move to a birds-eye view on the alliance. We take into account more than just the student view before taking up a project. I’m also happy about our involvement with the different commtittees that CEMS is rich with and especially the faculty groups. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE? M: I think communication. All the rest derives from it. W: The virtuality of the team. We meet 3 weeks a year, but work 52. Balancing the message and giving feedback over email or skype is not the easiest thing. WHAT IS THE KEY TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR YEAR? M: Busy is such a relative term. Whenever I was busy, better time management would prove me wrong – and I could find more time! W: What do you imply... it’s not over yet... Ask me again in February Let’s move some stuff before St Gallen.
