Another Monumental Trip! The Algarve Archaelogical Association by Jane Robertson

f you have an interest in archaeology or history, you could consider joining the Algarve Archaelogical Association (AAA) or perhaps attend one of our interesting lectures (see box below).

Recently the AAA organised a 4-day trip to the lovely town of Castelo de Vide (see map). This area is well known for the purity of its water, and there are fountains from which we could collect our own fresh supplies. The countryside was beautifully enhanced by the spring rains, and there were fields of wild flowers and sparkling streams dominated by huge outcrops of granite. After fully exploring the town and its castle, we spent the next days visiting interesting sites in the area. At the nearby old Roman town of Ammaia, we could see the remains of the forum, baths and southern gateway of the town and visited the museum which displayed interesting finds revealing much about the daily lives of local inhabitants from those times. We then crossed the border to Spain to visit Valencia de Alcantara where guides showed us some fantastic megalithic monuments. These granite dolmen tombs are over 5,000 years old. As an interesting aside, in 1762, the town featured in a battle where an Anglo-Portuguese force defeated the Spanish to take the town during the Seven Years War.

On our ﬁnal day, we had an excellent visit to Viana do Alentejo to tour the castle and its church. On our return to the Algarve, all agreed that this had been an excellent tour to an area of great interest with beautiful and tranquil countryside. Another trip is being organised in October.
