How They Met

Michael and I met at an Arkansas Travelers baseball game at Dickey Stephens Park. Our friends “set us up but neglected to tell us what they were doing. It worked though, and a month later, we were inseparable. Five years and one 130-year-old home purchase later, we decided to get married.

What Made the

Wedding Special Michael and I both wanted something relaxed and nontraditional for family and friends just to have a really good time. We chose the Terry House as our venue because we love downtown Little Rock where we live. I decided to forgo the big white dress, and my mom made a beautiful long teal skirt and lace top for me to wear. My mom played a very big role in the whole day. She and I together designed the table centerpieces from vintage items we found at flea markets. She built my bouquet from vintage broaches. She also created “flowers” from burlap and lace for my Matron of Honor and Michael’s groomswoman. We provided navy blue ties for Michael’s Man of Honor and my bridesman. Michael and I also decided to be a bit non-traditional in our ceremony music choices. I walked down the aisle with both of my parents to “The Book of Love” by the Magnetics. We recessed to “The Throne Room” from the 1977 Star Wars movie “A New Hope.” Our amazing band, The Lockhouse Orchestra, also gave a nod to our quirky tastes during the reception by playing “Ghostbusters” alongside Huey Lewis and the News and Smashing Pumpkins.

We also decided to skip the wedding cake and had Loblolly Creamery bring their ice cream truck. They designed a special lemon basil ice cream flavor just for us. At the end of the night, instead of throwing a garter and bouquet, Michael and I both threw weddingthemed Mardi Gras beads. I’m so lucky to have had Tony Baker taking our photos. I have so many gorgeous shots to help me remember the day. Our wedding was so perfect, special and reflective of who Michael and I are as individuals and as a couple. Thank you to everyone who made it happen!

A Perfect Day with Alda A Little Paperwork… The Marriage License! To be legally married, there must be a little legal paper work…a marriage license! More than once, I have had a bride get so busy with pre-wedding festivities that the most important item of all has been forgotten! A trip to the County Clerk’s office is a must to sig and obtain a legal marriage license. For destination weddings, you do not have to even be a legal resident of Arkansas to obtain a license. Since you will apply for the license before you marry, you will sign it with your maiden name, or, for the groom, current name. You'll need a government-issued photo identification (such as a driver's license or passport), Social Security card, or a combination of documents. No blood test is required, but there will be a fee. The Pulaski County fee for a marriage license is $60.00, cash only (no checks). After coming home from the honeymoon, don’t forget that you must return the signed marriage license within 60 days.

If you are going out of the country for a honeymoon, take only a copy of your original, and leave the original at home in a safe place until you return. Should a disaster strike in a foreign country, you could prove you were married since most flights would be made in your maiden name. After the wedding, when you notify the Social Security Administration, your banks, and the like of the name change, it's your marriage certificate that serves as proof. It's a good idea to request at least two certified copies of the marriage certificate for all your offici name changes: some places accept photocopies, while others must see a document with an original government seal. Requirements differ by locale. Only the county clerk's office can tell yo the specific paperwork you will have to provide, when it's needed, and other pertinent details.
