A YEAR IN REVIEW CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL 2017-2018 PRESIDENTS’ REPORT

This fall, Central Catholic High School welcomed the Class of 2022 to our campus. In these first few weeks of the school year, I have been inspired by the phenomenal potential that exists within these 220 young men and women. I am reminded daily of our work, our responsibility, in partnering with our students’ parents in their development by providing them the tools to ultimately become catalysts for positive change in their communities. Our students come from all over the Portland metropolitan area. Some come to Central Catholic knowing, or at least thinking they know, what they intend to accomplish as students. Others seek to take the time to figure that out. In either case, our faculty and staff will be with them each step along their journey to support and help foster their growth. I had the chance to address the freshman class and I asked them to do three things during their time as high school students: Take Advantage of Each Day. People have sacrificed a lot to help make your attendance at Central Catholic possible. Whether it was parents or anonymous donors, individuals made the decision to help support you to be here, so I encourage you to recognize the opportunity you have been given and take full advantage of it. Take Care and Look Out For One Another. It is not expected that you will all become best of friends. However, as a class you will experience both enormous successes and also unforeseen challenges. You have the opportunity to help support one another. Leave Your Mark. Central Catholic High School has a strong and storied history, rich with an incredible sense of community. The Class of 2022 is now a part of this and you have the chance to add to the school’s story. As I meet with Central Catholic alumni and parents, they often tell me of the powerful impact the school has had in their lives, or respectively, the lives of their children. They share with me the profound influence the education they received at Central Catholic, both inside and outside of the classroom, had in their professional, personal, and spiritual lives. It is this impact that I am excited these young students get to experience and it is this impact that creates the lifelong bond our community has with the school. As members of our incredible community of alumni, parents, and friends, you know our story well. When Central Catholic first opened its doors in 1939, it did so with the conviction that a family’s financial situation not be an obstacle to a deserving child enrolling here. It is our belief that a person’s individual circumstance does not determine their potential that drives this thinking. This is only possible with the committed support that so many of you in our community provide each year. I am grateful to each of you, including the more than 2,900 individuals who have made generous and purposeful contributions to support these remarkable students and the work of Central Catholic High School. You can probably tell how proud I am of our school and how optimistic I am for its future. With the many challenges our society faces, I am surrounded each day by the solution to those issues. It is with your support and partnership that we continue the important work of Central Catholic. Gratefully,

Giving Back As soon as they walked through the doors at SE 24th and Stark, Dr. Rick and Nancy Green knew they wanted to send their kids to Central Catholic High School. The pair are transplants to the Pacific Northwest, putting down roots in Longview, Washington where Rick’s job as a plastic surgeon landed them. When it came time for their eldest, Carolyn, to start high school in 2006, they looked to the Portland area to find the right fit. “We went to the Central Catholic Open House and I remember meeting Paul O’Malley and all the students who greet you in the doorway,” Nancy says. “Rick and I looked at each other and were like, ‘Wow, can we make this work?’. Because it just felt like home from the very beginning.” All three of their children, Carolyn ‘10, Andrew ‘13, and Julia ‘15, made their way through Central Catholic. During their ten years as parents at Central Catholic, Rick and Nancy enjoyed being involved with cross country and track (“Big shout out to the distance program,” Nancy says.) and talking with their kids about their classes. Rick particularly recalls his children’s interests in their religion and social studies classes. “I always felt like those teachers are a very rare kind of teacher. They are teaching an academic subject, but they are really teaching these kids about life, teaching them how to live, [. . . ] about how to be a well-developed person and how to be a thoughtful citizen. Not every school has teachers like that.” Rick and Nancy have focused their philanthropic efforts on supporting Catholic education. Rick is a board member on the Fulcrum Foundation in Washington. The foundation’s focus is on increasing access to a faith-filled Catholic education. “We like the idea of supporting schools,” Nancy says. “We really like the idea of supporting Central Catholic, more so than maybe the colleges who have more donors. We have focused on that because we really believe in that. I don’t want other families who are thinking about [sending their kids to a Catholic high school] to have money be an obstacle.” Rick adds: “I was always taught that you proselytize by doing good works. You share your faith by being a good example. I think Central has certainly given our children, and does give its students, the opportunity to do exactly that. To share their faith by doing good work, whether it’s in school, or it’s in service, or it’s involved in the community–and going forward–whatever they happen to do with their lives. I think that’s how they are sharing their Catholic faith. That’s more of a subtle style or approach, but I think it’s a really powerful approach. We will continue to be a part of the Central Catholic community. We will help give people the opportunity to be a good example and hopefully our children will do that as well.” If you are interested in helping deserving students receive a Central Catholic education, contact Ellie Dir, Vice President of Advancement at 503.230.1056 ext. 1258 or edir@centralcatholichigh.org.

There is a vibrant new addition to the Central Catholic hallways: a six-foot by eight-foot mural, designed and completed by students in the Art Club, graces the entryway to the Weston Commons. Anna Ferroggiaro ’19 has worked on the mural with the club since the project began in February 2017. “A lot of other elementary schools and high schools have colorful artwork and our school didn’t have that kind of color use.” The club sought to change that. They sectioned the mural into “frames” representing different aspects of the Central Catholic community, our city, and the state. Anna says one of her favorite parts of the mural is the flags. From a design perspective, she says she loves how fluid they are. She also really likes that the flags represent everyone and expand on the aspect of diversity at Central Catholic. Students who worked on the mural, Morgan Ruff ’19, Claire Hery ’19, Anna Ferroggiaro ’19, Anna Donnelly ’20, and Brianna Perkins ’20, celebrate its completion with a “toast.” Not pictured: Emma Dyer ’18. 2 | Central Catholic Magazine

WELCOME

Ellie Dir Over the summer, we welcomed a new member to the Development Team: Ellie Dir was hired as the Vice President of Advancement.

Dir has worked in the fundraising and development sphere for the last twentythree years and comes to Central Catholic with extensive experience in strategic philanthropy, prospect management, and stewardship. Most recently, she was the Associate Director of Philanthropy at the Nature Conservancy where she managed a portfolio of major donors and worked with staff on donor development and stewardship. She has also served as a Major Gift Officer at the OHSU Foundation, Associate Director of Major Gifts and Associate Director of Parent Giving at the University of Portland, and the Director of Development at La Salle Catholic College Prep. Dir has a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Portland and has earned her Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential. She

CC Magazine: What is your connection to Central Catholic? Ellie Dir: While I have many friends who work (or worked) at Central Catholic, or who have sent their children to school here, my closest connection is through my sister, Stephanie Dir-Halewyn ‘84. She graduated in the second class of girls at Central Catholic. (She was Central Catholic’s first Rose Festival princess and first Rose Festival queen. We are very proud of her for this, and for many other reasons.) She loved her experience here, the academics, the faith-based community, the school spirit, the whole thing. My whole family, by extension, loves Central Catholic as well. CCM: What drew you to the world of fundraising and development? ED: Initially, I was drawn to the world of nonprofit because I just wanted the opportunity to work in a mission-driven organization. I ended up working in fundraising almost by accident. Over time, I learned that I really enjoy interacting with people who care deeply about making a difference and who want to do something meaningful with their resources, whether that’s time, talent, or treasure. Helping people align with their passion is so gratifying. Working in development means that there is lots of variety. No two days are ever the same, and there are always opportunities to draw on different skills and past experiences. Every day provides new challenges, fun surprises, and opportunities for growth. CCM: What are three traits that define you: ED: Relational. Disciplined. Thoughtful. CCM: What do you see as Central Catholic’s greatest strength and how do you plan to build on it? ED: Hands down, it’s all about the Central Catholic community. It’s hard to describe, but the feel of it is almost tangible. I noticed it the minute I entered the building. It has to do with the age of the school (almost 80 years), and the multiple generations of families who’ve attended here. It’s

about the traditions and the decades of friendships and shared experiences that bind everyone together in this amazing web of connection. It’s about the dedication of our current parents AND our past parents, whose commitment to the school is unwavering, sometimes decades after their children graduate. In terms of harnessing this strength for fundraising, I am standing on the broad shoulders of my predecessors, who have done a great job of engaging alumni and parents in the work of advancing the school. I would like to continue to build on their great work. I’m also excited about the team in the Development office. They are passionate about Central Catholic and incredibly talented. My focus in the next few months will be on deploying their skills in engaging more people in our work, through our messaging, our events, and in working with our many generous supporters. The faculty and staff here make my job easier and our leadership, Colin McGinty, John Garrow ‘76, and Monsignor Tim Murphy ‘58, bring their vision, wisdom, and perspective in setting our course for the future. It is a very good time to be working at Central Catholic High School. CCM: What are you most excited about as you take on this new role? ED: Education, Catholic education in particular, has been a theme throughout my career and I am thrilled to be working in a school community again. I love how passionate the faculty and staff are about the school, and the happy, crazy energy the kids bring to the hallways. I’m really looking forward to getting to know people, our volunteers, our donors, our staff, and all the people who have contributed to making Central Catholic such an amazing community. CCM: What advice would you give to your high school self? ED: Relax and quit worrying about what other people think. Trust me, no one cares (or notices) that you’re having a bad hair day.

LEGACY SOCIETY MEMBERS:

Bill ’58 and Jane Murphy Bill ’58 and Jane Murphy could easily be defined as Central Catholic boosters. They are generous benefactors and devoted fans whether it be an event on the field, court, or stage, and are unwavering in their support of the school. They practically bleed cardinal and gold.

through their will, estate plan, life income agreement, or other planned gift arrangements. Membership in the Legacy Society is dependent on the type of gift plan, not the amount of the gift.

The Murphy clan includes three generations of Rams: Bill, his son Kevin ’87 and daughter Erin (’89), his granddaughter Hailey ’18, and Jane’s children, Brian Barkdoll ’07 and Kara Barkdoll ’11.

“People who are 50 years old and older should really be looking at this and considering a gift to Central,” Bill says. “[. . .] We need more alumni to step forward and acknowledge that there is going to be something in their will for Central Catholic. [It] doesn’t have to be a dollar amount, just an intent to give.”

Jane has held various positions at Central Catholic from Business Manager to classroom teacher. Most recently, she used her business expertise to grow and improve the Ram Store. For Bill’s 60th birthday, Jane established a named family scholarship in his honor, the William P. Murphy ’58 Scholarship.

In addition to potential tax breaks, including Central Catholic in your longterm financial planning provides an opportunity to make a significant gift without affecting your current income. A bequest to Central Catholic will help ensure the best possible education for future generations of Rams.

For his part, Bill organized the first auction in 1995 and has attended every one since. He has served on two capital campaigns, the first in 2002-2004 and the second in 2013-2015. He and Jane became members of the Legacy Society in 2008 when Bill informed the school that he included Central Catholic in his estate plans.

Pat Hainley ‘69 concurs. A certified public accountant, Hainley says, “The first rule of estate planning is, ‘Clean up your mess before you go.’ If you don’t write a will yourself, the state writes one for you. The allure of making a gift to Central Catholic is generally for tax purposes and paying back the education you received.” Leaving a bequest to Central Catholic will also help ensure the best possible education and opportunities for future generations of Rams.

The Legacy Society recognizes those who provide for Central Catholic 8 | Central Catholic Magazine

Bill and Jane’s motivation comes from their desire to provide students the best in educational opportunities. “You support Catholic education because you see all the success stories,” Bill says. “There are so many students that come from poor backgrounds, it’s great to see the ones that make it out and succeed.” Jane adds, “You also hope that [students] will develop into a faith-filled life. It’s important for me that these young people develop their faith.”

Legacy Society Members The Legacy Society is comprised of generous benefactors of Central Catholic who made a planned gift or have included provisions for a testamentary gift from the assets of their estate. Create your Legacy My wife, Mary, and I chose to be members of the legacy society because we want others who may not be able to attend Central Catholic to be given the opportunity to receive the same type of education our children, Mark ‘83 and Meleah ‘86, and grandchildren, Allie ‘17 and Megan ‘19, received at Central Catholic. To us, Catholic Education is a more well-rounded education. In addition to teaching academics, it gives students the life skills we believe in, as summarized in Micah 6:8; “This is what the Lord asks of you: To act justly, walk humbly and love tenderly.” -Rick Potter

Include Central Catholic in your will or trust today and make a powerful impact on tomorrow’s students. Including Central Catholic in your long term financial plan allows you to: • Make a significant gift without affecting your current income • Provide a charitable tax deduction for your estate • Ensure the best possible education and opportunities for future generations

“Leo was the most honest, up front, happy man because he knew what was in here,” his wife, Elaine Garrow, says as she motions to her heart. “He had an incredibly deep faith that carried him through.” Leo passed away in 2015, at which time Elaine and their seven children set up a memorial scholarship in his honor. “He let it be known that he would certainly love to have a scholarship someday. [. . .] It was a great focus for us after Leo’s death. He was a very, very humble man. His humility stood out at every turn and he would have been in awe [to know that there is a scholarship at his alma mater in his name].” Leo grew up in southeast Portland, having attended St. Stephen’s Catholic School before heading to the newly opened Central Catholic. Elaine says he was an athletic young man, playing football and basketball for the school. She says that he used to tell her this story, which is a familiar tale of the time: “It was World War II time, his birthday was coming up and the war was still going on. He was soon to be drafted. He did not want to be in the army. So he enlisted in the Navy and they took him right away, right off the basketball court. He told me he was just broken-hearted to leave during basketball season. He went into the Navy in probably February, he didn’t get to graduate. His mother came [to the school] and picked up his diploma.” After returning from the war, Leo headed to the University of Portland to study engineering. During his college years, he met Elaine and they married during his senior year. The two started their family which grew to include seven children. All six of their boys would also attend Central Catholic: Dan ’69, Phil ’71, Nick ’72, Pete ’73, John ’76, and Ed ’84. Their daughter Mary graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in 1979. The third generation of Garrows followed with the graduations of Emily Randazzo ’06, PJ Garrow ’09, Liz Randazzo ’10, Zach Garrow ’14, and Sarah Garrow ’15. Elaine says it was always important to them to send their kids to Catholic schools. “We are both products of twelve years of [Catholic education]. It was in complement to our faith. Both of us believed in the quality of a strong, Catholic education and in the sisters and priests available at the time to do the job.” So it was only natural for the family to want to help others receive a Catholic education as well. The Leo Garrow ’45 Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to students interested in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. However, the scholarship has not yet reached the necessary $25,000 level required for distribution. As we go to print, it is about $5,000 short. “We are hoping that it reaches it soon,” Elaine says. “I tell my sons that I hope that it reaches the [minimum amount] before I die, so that I can hand it out at least once.” 10 | Central Catholic Magazine

Throughout its history, Central Catholic High School has maintained a deep commitment to providing a college preparatory Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s General Endowment Fund provides a sound financial foundation, which in turn provides significant scholarship money and tuition assistance for students in the future. Only a portion of the earnings on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships and tuition assistance, making this a perpetual gift. The endowment fund generated $467,521 in scholarships and tuition assistance for our students for the 2018-2019 school year. * Indicates the scholarship is pending and has not yet reached $25,000, the minimum balance for distribution. † Deceased

Honor Roll of Donors We offer sincere thanks to all who have made financial contributions to Central Catholic High School over the past fiscal year. We would not be the school we are without you. Thank you for all the ways you contribute, for the role you play in the Central Catholic tradition, and for ensuring our mission continues today and into the future. The following donors made gifts between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2018 in response to various efforts including (but not limited to): the Annual Appeal, Capital Campaign, estate gifts, memorial gifts, Parent Investment Program, Presidents’ Dinner and Auction, students 4 students fundraiser, matching gift companies, and other unsolicited gifts. We strive to correctly recognize each of our generous donors. Please notify the Development Office at 503.230.1056 with any corrections or omissions. We are tremendously grateful for your support. * Bricks and Mortar Club: Through donations made in monthly installments, these donors have gone above and beyond to help build a financial foundation that our school can depend on month after month. †

The Point System

Central Catholic maintains a partnership between co-curricular programs in the school, volunteer forces of current parents, and the formal structure of the Development Office to create a winning situation for all. By creating volunteer opportunities for parents to earn points for their designated program, Central Catholic was able to raise more funds overall. Each program received the funding they needed without organizing and running individual fundraisers. These volunteers performed nearly 2,000 hours for the Central Catholic community. Central Catholic distributed $80,000 to the following programs for the direct benefit of current students: Football Softball Art Club Boys’ Golf Songleading Baseball Girls’ Golf Swimming Boys’ Basketball Japan Club Boys’ Tennis Girls’ Basketball Boys’ Lacrosse Girls’ Tennis Cheer Music Track and Field Constitution Team Boys’ Soccer Ultimate Frisbee Boys’ Cross Country Girls’ Soccer Girls’ Cross Country Ski Team Drama Annual Report | 29

students 4 students Fundraiser Revenue: $156,211

The students 4 students Fundraiser is a Central Catholic tradition, and our current students stand on the shoulders of past generations of Rams who for decades sold thousands of cases of Almond Roca each year. Today this tradition of students helping students continues with Central Catholic students raising money for tuition assistance and student-focused projects and activities. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who stepped forward to assist our students in this important effort. students 4 students Fundraiser Patron Sponsors Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to the following donors who sponsored Central Catholic students at the Patron level ($500 and above) during the students 4 students fundraiser. Our student body brought the Christian Service message home when they asked sponsors to help them raise over $175,000 in support of their own classmates whose families struggle to provide a Central Catholic education for their children. If you have the opportunity, please help us thank these sponsors and patronize any businesses listed here.
