“Who are those guys anyway?”

In This Issue

This issue of the Central Catholic Magazine celebrates the Class of 2016 and their outstanding accomplishments during their four years here. We also say goodbye to retiring faculty members and look back on their years of service to our community. Plus, if you missed this year’s auction, we have all the highlights from Under the Big Top.

The Next Issue

Our next publication is the Presidents’ Report on Development: an overview of the 2015-2016 fundraising campaigns and distributions. We will also review all that went on at 24th and Stark throughout the year. Most importantly, the issue will serve as a big thank you to our generous donors.

Congratulations to Kathleen Gianotti who will receive a Central Catholic sweatshirt for correctly identifying the graduates in this picture published in the spring issue of the Central Catholic Magazine. 2006 Rose Festival Court (left to right): Stephanie Boyce, Megan Biles, Amanda Jacobs, Princess April Cheek, and Mindy Brakebush. Who are these guys? Identify these students, submit your guesses, and the winner will be chosen in a random drawing on July 15.

Experiencing Japan: Land of the Rising Sun During Spring Break this year, six Central Catholic students traveled to Japan with Education First Educational Tours. The group included Morgan McCurdy ‘16, Jessica Nagae ‘16, Koko White ‘16, Kirt Achterman ‘17, Josh Stirnkorb ‘17, and Josh Wood ‘18, led by Central Catholic teacher, Jane Murphy. Central Catholic students were joined by two other student groups from Florida and South Carolina. After a 14 hour flight, our students were met by a tour director at Narita airport and the adventure began. In their travels, students were able to sightsee around Tokyo with a local guide. They toured spots like Shibuya Crossing, which is comparable to New York’s Times Square. At Shibuya, an average of 400 people cross the famous intersection every 40 seconds. Students experienced the local cuisine and were willing to try everything that was served to them.

Message from the President Greetings! I have the good fortune of noting that I am nearing the conclusion of my first year in the role of president of this outstanding school. Throughout the past year, the question people have asked most often was, “How is it going?” To which I have replied, “Fast!” Indeed, the level of activity around campus is amazing. The students hit the ground running at the start of the year and they leave maintaining a frantic pace, but distinctively, a year more mature. They invest much of their time studying, participating in diverse activities, and giving thoughtful pause to decision-making. As we take a moment to celebrate our students’ promotions to their next year of high school, and for our graduates, their first year of college, we also pause to celebrate our faculty and staff.

Meanwhile, our faculty and staff demonstrated a truly solid esprit de corps as they roasted and toasted themselves at our end-ofthe-year party. The ambiance in the Weston Commons was one of camaraderie as this team celebrated the satisfaction of jobs well done. Please know, the collective energy of Central Catholic’s faculty will be re-charged during their summer break. The staff will be preparing the school for our returning and new students, who will arrive in August to kick off the 2016-2017 school year, undoubtedly another year of excellence for Central Catholic. God Bless Central Catholic,

Tony Leineweber ’62 President

The excellence demonstrated by Central Catholic’s students reflects a shared excellence with the faculty who taught, counseled, mentored and helped lead them, and responded to them as they progressed. Our faculty members are the nucleus of what Central Catholic produces: students prepared for college and life. They help shape qualities of inquisitiveness, reasoning, acceptance of others, respect, fair play . . . I could go on and on. They help produce scholarship winners, honor society members, National Merit Scholarship finalists, and students of other exceptional achievements. And on top of it all, they help nurture this caring and compassionate community. The success of our students is a team effort that starts with their home environments, beginning with the participation of parents and guardians in the financing and logistics of their child’s attendance here. This effort is further supported on campus through the coordination and efforts of staff who respond to parent inquiries and help create a successful educational path for each student. Faculty and counselors help guide the growth of our students. Our Campus Ministry team, together with the Religion Department, provide a critical resource in personal development in the Catholic faith. And our coaching staff, along with volunteer parents and alumni, provide yet another dimension in assisting the students entrusted to our care. Our faculty and staff recently celebrated the retirements of three contributors to our students’ success along with one departure to another region of the state to live and work. Retiring are Mike Macallister, 27-year physics instructor extraordinaire, Jane Murphy, 22-year combination role player in the Business Office, classroom, and Ram Store, and Nancy Vandervelde, teacher-librarian for four years at Central Catholic and educator for a total of 30 years. Jake Miller, after five years at Central Catholic as a history teacher, is moving to Bend to teach in Redmond. 2 | Central Catholic Magazine

Development Updates Planned Giving: Estate Planning

Central Catholic is blessed to have a generous and tight-knit community that helps keep our traditions alive. It’s your giving that ensures that our school will thrive well into the future. With that in mind, we will be running a series of articles to discuss the ways you can include Central Catholic in your estate plans; one of the many ways people can give to our community. This article will focus on the topic of leaving a lasting legacy at Central Catholic through a gift in trust. A trust is an arrangement whereby a designated person, called the trustee, invests and manages specific assets for the express benefit of the beneficiary. A trust can be created at death, through instructions in a will, or during one’s lifetime in order to be used immediately. In recent years, an increasingly popular financial planning option is the “living trust.” By transferring the ownership of all estate assets into a living trust, it is possible to streamline financial management. A living trust also allows assets to avoid probate through the courts and ensures privacy after an individual dies. This is because a trust remains a private document, instead of becoming a public record, like a will. There are a number of ways to leave a gift in trust. For example, a trust can provide a surviving family member with income for life with the remainder going to charity after the death of the survivor. In another option, a trust may provide income to a charity for a certain number of years with the remainder ultimately going to a family member. There are many benefits to setting up a charitable trust. They include reducing gift taxes, receiving income tax deductions, and reducing estate taxes. If you would like to discuss gift opportunities, please contact Mike Pinder ’77, Director of Development at 503.230.1056 ext. 1127.

Endowed Scholarship Ceremony

The 2016-2017 Endowed Scholarship Ceremony was held May 31. There were more than 450 people in attendance as Central Catholic awarded 173 scholarships to incoming freshmen and current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors for the 2016-2017 school year. During the evening, over $390,000 in scholarships and grants were awarded. Ben Sprouse ‘16 gave a poignant speech about how receiving scholarships throughout his high school career helped form him as an individual and inspired him to perform service and give back to the community. He strongly encouraged this year’s scholarship recipients to take it upon themselves to give back to the community that has been so generous to them.

Setting Up an Endowed Scholarship

Throughout its history, Central Catholic has maintained a deep commitment to providing a quality Catholic education to students regardless of their family’s ability to meet tuition requirements. The school’s Endowment Fund was established to create a sound financial foundation which provides significant scholarship money, operating support, and tuition assistance for students in the future. The Central Catholic High School Endowment Fund was founded in 1979 with a generous gift from The Frost and Margaret Snyder Foundation and is overseen by a board of directors that manages the fund’s investments. The Endowment Fund today totals over $11 million.

Freshman Sneak Peek

Welcome Class of 2020! Incoming freshmen and their parents got a “sneak peek” into what life is like at Central Catholic. Meeting and greeting took place over a delicious barbecue dinner in the cafeteria. After everyone had their fill, it was time for students and parents to go their separate ways. Students headed to the East Gym for activities that included an obstacle course, get to know you conversations, and music and movie trivia. Meanwhile, the parents got an introduction to high school life from Admissions Director, Paul O’Malley. They received information on daily school life, campus ministry, school policies, and received a packet of materials to take home. We are excited to welcome our new students and parents to the Central Catholic community. 4 | Central Catholic Magazine

Currently, there are more than 85 established endowed scholarships at Central Catholic High School. These scholarships have been set up in honor or memory of loved ones. A new scholarship is established when the individual fund balance reaches or exceeds $25,000 and has earned interest for one year. Only a portion of the interest earned on the principal amount is used annually for scholarships, so it is a perpetual gift. Typically a $25,000 fund will produce one $1,000+ scholarship per year, although the interest amount may vary slightly from year to year. As the principal balance increases, the amount and number of scholarships also increases. If you would like more information about setting up an endowed scholarship, please call Jolyn Winczewski at 503.230.1056 ext. 1126.

Top Scholars Valedictorian: Cassandra Elizabeth Job

Cassie Job finished her four years at Central Catholic with an impressive 4.5 GPA and was recognized this year as a National Hispanic Scholar. She participated in varsity cross country and varsity track and field. She also served as a Rambassador and was a member of the Latino Student Union and MEChA. Cassie performed her senior community service with “Potluck in the Park.” This organization provides a free hot meal every week to anyone in need. About her service experience she said, “I was able to witness the relief and joy across people’s faces as they received what may have been their only hot meal all week.” This fall she will attend the University of Washington. She says she has yet to determine a major, but is on a pre-med track. Her parting words to her classmates, “Travel, find people who inspire you, and enjoy the simple moments.”

Salutatorian: Erin Nicole Santos

Erin Santos says her favorite aspect of the Central Catholic community is how easy it is to get involved in elective classes, clubs, and athletics. During her time here, Erin participated in varsity soccer and basketball, was president of the math club, and Sergeant at Arms of the National Honor Society. She has a 4.48 GPA and has been commended as a National Merit Scholar. Erin’s favorite teacher is Mr. Workman, even though his class could be “brutally hard” at times. She says the way he taught made her want to overcome the challenge. She advises, “Don’t be afraid of your teachers. They are there to help and are genuinely interested in getting to know you. Take advantage of their knowledge and experience.” Erin will be heading to Colgate University, a private liberal arts college in New York. She plans to study biochemistry and eventually work in the field of medical research.

Words of Wisdom Keynote Speaker: Kay D. Toran

This year’s commencement address was given by Kay D. Toran. She is the President and CEO of Volunteers of America Oregon, a broadbased human services organization that aims to improve the lives of Oregon’s children, families, and seniors. Her granddaughter, Ally Rossi graduated from Central Catholic in 2015 and her grandson, Josh Rossi is currently a sophomore. Kay began her address by inviting the seniors to look around and find their parents in the crowd and asked them to say “thank you” in unison. Kay has lived her life in service to others. In her address, she spoke about her journey from NE Hancock Street in Portland to directing Oregon’s second largest agency, Children Services Division. She currently provides the overall leadership and strategic direction for Volunteers of America Oregon. Here is the conclusion of her address: Have the courage to commit to living a disciplined and principled life driven by your values and beliefs. Have the courage to embrace, appreciate, and respect all that has been given to us in nature, in our environment, and with people. Have the courage to embrace diversity! Sing it from the rooftops. Shout it from the mountain tops. Lead the change to fix this problem. It is within our diversity that we are stronger as a nation, as a people and as a world. [...] Class of 2016 - You are now ready to step into your future, be prepared to take on the world, and make a positive, dynamic contribution. You are poised to write your own . . . story and open many doors. So, as you leave here today: Dream big! Lead the change! Spread your wings wide! And soar! The wind you feel behind you is all of our love and best wishes.

Retirement: And So the Adventure Begins! This year we are saying goodbye to three retiring faculty members, Mike Macallister, Jane Murphy, and Nancy Vandervelde. We want to thank each of them for their many years in the Central Catholic community and wish them the best in the future.

Mike Macallister

Mike Macallister has been challenging his students to be great at science since 1989. He came to us from California where he graduated from University of California Long Beach with a degree in psychology. He began his career as a medical technician at the Long Beach VA Medical Center clinical laboratory and later worked as a medical technologist at Tuality Hospital in Hillsboro. He says that his interest in this “waned” and he made the decision to go back to school to get an education degree. Mike was hired at Central Catholic to teach senior Physics, PhyChem (a semester of physics and a semester of chemistry) and Algebra II. Looking back he says, “My first year was the worst year of my life, I must admit. I was having serious doubts as to the wisdom in my choice of professions. However, I have loved every minute of it since.” He says teaching has provided him with a lifetime of working with and learning about the subjects that he loves. During his time here he also taught Conceptual Physics and Biology, and served as Chair of the Science Department. He also served as the moderator of the Quiz Bowl off and on from 1994-2014. He finished his career teaching Advanced Placement (AP) Physics, Honors and AP Chemistry, and Theoretical Physics. When reflecting on his greatest accomplishment during his 27 years at Central Catholic, Mike talks about his former students. “Many, many of my former students have come back from college to tell me how well I prepared them for the next level and that I made a difference in their lives. This, to me, is the finest reward I could ever get as an educator.” As for the future, Mike is looking forward to hiking, biking, and traveling more with his wife, Carmen. They are planning a month-long trip to Italy in September. He is hoping to dive into some reading and studying on advanced topics in science. And you may even see him back around the Central Catholic hallways; he hopes to come back as a substitute teacher every once and a while.

Jane Murphy

Jane Murphy is one of the most familiar faces around Central Catholic. Most recently she’s been the smiling face behind the counter of the Ram Store or cheering with her cardinal and gold pom poms at athletic events. Jane started at Central Catholic as the Business Manager in July 1993. Before she joined our community, Jane worked as an accountant for Atlantic Richfield Company, as Manager of Accounting for Wonder Bread Hostess Cakes, and later as Bakery Controller for Hostess Cakes’ Portland Operation. When the bakery

closed their Portland offices and moved to Seattle, Jane decided she wouldn’t be following the company north. She interviewed at Central Catholic and as she says, “the rest is history!” Jane was the Business Manager for five years before she decided she wanted to work with students. She obtained her Master of Arts in Teaching at Pacific University in 1999. Since 2000, Jane has taught many classes including Spanish, Yearbook, and Computer Applications. She introduced two new classes to the curriculum: Sports Marketing and Financing Your Future, which she also taught. During her time here she also served as Administrative Assistant to Sr. Maureen Kalsch, SSMO and on the Accreditation Team in 2005-2006 and 2012-2013. Jane says her greatest accomplishment during her time at Central Catholic was in her early days in the Business Office. She got the school back on track financially after a disastrous fundraiser in her second year. During her five years as Business Manager, she provided monthly financial reports to the school board and worked to restore the school to a financially sound condition. Jane’s husband Bill ’58 graduated from Central Catholic along with Jane’s children, Brian ’07 and Kara ‘11 who both went on to play sports in college. She says, “It was rewarding for me to have them attend here where I dedicated so much of my time.”

Nancy Vandervelde

Nancy Vandervelde joined the Central Catholic community in 2012 as a Library Media Specialist. She began her career at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin in 1976. She taught Spanish and was the first lay female hired at the school. She moved to Oregon in 1980 to complete her masters degree at the University of Oregon. Nancy taught for several years in the Portland area before she decided it was time for a change and began working in the travel industry. This allowed her to experience many beautiful places around the world including snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and exploring Machu Picchu in Peru. In 2000, she returned to the world of academia and completed an endorsement in Library Media. She spent the last 15 years working as a teacher-librarian in both middle and high school libraries. She says libraries and the role of a librarian has changed significantly since she started teaching. For the past four years Nancy has enjoyed creating a warm, welcoming environment in our library, developing a collection to meet the needs of the curriculum, and collaborating and teaching lessons that help students develop skills to find, select, evaluate, and use information. Nancy’s retirement plans include travel and cycling. She will be jetsetting to southeast Asia and will spend one of her two months there touring the country by bike. She also plans to stay connected to libraries and hopes to teach Spanish again. Nancy says, “Be open to serendipity!” Summer 2016 | 9

Team 2005 took home the top spot in the Championship bracket by defeating Team 1998-1999. The top spot in the Consolation bracket went to Team 2006-2010. Congratulations to our winners! Next year’s tournament will be May 15-20, 2017. Start stretching and working on your lay-ups! The Alumni Board is making changes to the 2017 tournament. A planning committee will be established to help identify team captains in order to increase participation and contribute new ideas. Each year we strive to keep the tournament fresh while maintaining the history of the JSC tournament. If you are interested in being on the committee or in being a team captain, contact Lynn McFarland in the Development Office, 503.230.1056 ext. 1243 or e-mail lmcfarland@centralcatholichigh.org. Let’s make the 37th annual John Shepard Classic the premier alumni tournament in Oregon once again! Lynn offered, “The John Shepard Classic is a longstanding tradition that alumni look forward to year after year. We want to strengthen the ties between alumni and the school by bringing in new ideas to this annual tournament.”

Member of the Legends teams 1958-1972 and 1973-1976 visit with Coach John Shepard.

The Twenty-first Annual Presidents’ Dinner and Auction was held on April 23, 2016 at the Oregon Convention Center. Guests were entertained and delighted as circus performers filled the Portland Ballroom with daring feats of acrobatics, juggling, and stilt walking! In addition to the Silent and Live Auctions, there was a ring toss for the Wall of Wine, raffle for a 2016 Honda Civic, and the popular Golden Ticket raffle, which gave the winner their pick of a Live Auction package. During dinner, students showcased their talents, which is everyone’s favorite part of the program. Thanks to everyone who attended, and especially our sponsors, for such a memorable and successful evening!
