We had a really strong spring as a division and I hope to continue to build off our successes in the summer and fall! Remember, just because school is out doesn’t mean that service should stop. Try to meet up with your local Circle K or Kiwanis and continue serving over the summer. I hope you enjoy this newsletter created by the wonderful Alysha Cabarrubias! Stay cool Central Coast

SERVICE

Earth Day Beach Clean Up We attended the Surfrider Beach Cleanup where we had 42 members from both Ventura College and CLU CKI attend. The event hosted over 400 participants all working hard to clean up the beach! We handed out not only granola bars but also reusable water bottles to help reduce the use of plastic water bottles. The Surfrider Beach Cleanups was our first service event, forever giving it a special place in our club. -Sopheak Suy (Ventura College)

Best Day Best Day was an event spent at the beach where volunteers were assigned beach buddies to spend the day with. All the kids had various disabilities and we just got to talk and hang with our buddies as they did various activities around the beach. All the buddies had a lot of fun and I personally enjoyed getting to see them have a good time. -Jose Padilla (UC Santa Barbara)

Finals Care Packages

During our final club meeting of the year, we made care packages to give out to students during finals week! The biggest part of the project was making our own stress balls; we stuffed balloons with baking flour and tied them off! This was a fun service project because it was a little messy, so make sure you work over newspapers if your club tries it! We bought plastic gift bags and twisty ties, then put in the stress balls along with pencils, erasers, scantrons, candy, and handwritten notes! On the notes we wrote little messages like “Good Luck” and “Join Circle K.” Hopefully it worked as a recruitment effort for next year, too! We reserved a table on campus near the classrooms on the first day of finals week. Giving out the bags became a volunteer opportunity for club members. We planned for about four hours of tabling, but all the bags were gone in the first thirty minutes! The service project was a success and next year we plan to repeat it but triple the number of bags we make! -Olivia Becker (Cal Lutheran)

AIDS Walk This is the 2nd year we volunteered at the AIDs Walk in Ventura. Our club members served as the set up crew when different organizations came to set up their tents. We also wore some bright vests and helped with the traffic and making sure everyone stayed on the sidewalk and crossed when it was safe. -Sopheak Suy (Ventura College)

LEADERSHIP Central Coast members from UC Merced, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and UC Santa Barbara played their cards right and attended Spring Training Conference North on April 28, 2018 at CSU East Bay! These turtles spent a day full of attending workshops, partaking in a service project and bonding with each other. Shoutout to Daniela Alvarez, Gustavo Razo, Jorge Lopez, and NormaJane Soto from UC Merced who

STC North is an event that I would definitely go to again. Seeing all my friends from NorCal, taking photographs and meeting new people was an experience I would want to relive again. I would urge everyone reading this to attend next year, even if the drive is long! -Jason Tsao (UC Santa Barbara)

hosted their own workshops and helped others become better leaders in their communities! -Nicolas Wright (Cal Poly SLO)

STC SOUTH Spring Training Conference was a day full of activities! The workshops I attended, including Teamwork & Communication Skills and Maximizing Summer, were informative and enjoyable. In the Teamwork & Communication

STC, like any other district event, is always a great

to eliminate cards with duplicates and figure out

the unique card. Unfortunately, my group wasn't

because I normally would not have been able to talk

to them in person since they’re so far. I also really

goals for the summer and talked about our plans.

-Sophia Uemura (UC Santa Barbara)

Finally, Cal Lutheran had 8 members attend which is the most we've had for a district wide event since we chartered last Fall so it was definitely one to remember! -Katrina Delos Reyes (Cal Lutheran)

FELLOWSHIP End of the Year Banquet

The Circle K at UC Merced hosted its annual End-of-the-Year banquet at the UC Merced campus on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 7 PM. The banquet was hosted by former Vice-President of Administration, Jose Villata, and successor, Gustavo Razo, whom both planned the logistics of the event and worked deliberately to provide event décor, food, logistical space, and music. This event was the club’s last social event for the 2017-2018 term to recognize the achievements and work of all paid-dues members has done in the last term. The banquet featured several YouTube music video playlists requested by members and small ice-breakers in the beginning. Afterwards, members were presented with gag-awards, which are hilarious out-of-the-ordinary awards, such as Best Facial Expression, CKI Couple that never was, Secret Spy, and others. There were also formal achieving awards, such as Board Member of the Year, Most Inspirational, and Most Dedicated as examples. All awards were suggested and voted on by club members and the top choices were selected by the Banquet hosts if any discrepancies or tied votes came in. The banquet ended with the former board members describing their experience with a leadership role in CKI and the new board members describing some of their goals and aspirations. There were speeches given that gave great inspiration and happiness for club members as the club looks forward to a new term and future goals. It became a beaming joy moment for all members, however, it was a joyous event to reminisce the amazing achievements and memories the club members did for the last term. -Gustavo Razo (UC Merced)

Beach Picnic The beach picnic has been my favorite social this year because it gave me the opportunity to get to know the new members. It was held at Goleta Beach near the beginning of Spring Quarter by our Spirit and Social chair, Tara Habibi, who prepared so much food for us, including pizza, DIY sandwiches, and lots of snacks. It was such a great day to be out in the sun and we all really enjoyed the stress free environment. Regardless of the insanely strong wind and sand in our mouths, we had a great time. -Naomi Chia (UC Santa Barbara)

UCSB's Circle K club wrapped up its spring

quarter with an End of the Year Bowling night at Zodo's, a favorite spot for many SB students. Over 25 members attended and competed over a grand prize of free in n out! I had a great time at this event. It was our last big social of the year, a send off to our seniors, and a time for everyone to unwind before the last week of finals for the year. I personally got to spend time with my littles, take fun pictures in a photo booth, and win free pizza for bowling a strike! -Tara Habibi (UC Santa Barbara)

Coastal Coolness

I was so excited Central Coast was able to host its first Coastal Coolness in 2 years!! The event was hosted by Cal Poly CKI and we had an amazing turnout of members spanning from UC Merced all the way to Cal Lutheran. A Coastal Coolness is set up to incorporate all 3 tenets of our organization: service, leadership, and fellowship. The day began with a beach cleanup at the beautiful Avila Beach!! We then went downtown to eat lunch before heading onto campus for the DCM. After the DCM, Cal Poly CKI President, Weston Montgomery, led a tour around their campus while other members rested in the room. After the tour ended, some members went home to avoid a late drive while others went to Grover Beach for a nice bonfire. -Howard Wang (UC Santa Barbara)

Coastal Coolness was an amazing event, where I took some future members of the upcoming Merced College Circle K - Carrie Wee and Isaiah Jones - to have them see what Circle K has to offer as well as some new members for the upcoming semester at UC Merced. It was an overall fun event! -Julian Perez (UC Merced)
