EDITOR’S LETTER To say that the year 2020 has turned out a little differently to what was envisaged would be an understatement. The global pandemic has been a life-changing event, and while Australia has fared somewhat better than the rest of the world, we’ve still had our fair share of troubles. On the Central Coast, businesses have struggled to stay afloat, some even making the devastating decision to close down. But we have had some positive stories too. From feeding hospital staff to giving a helping hand to the elderly, Coastie’s are banding together to support each other, and our local businesses. Local artist Pete Rush, who has inspired locals with his marvellous eco sculptures, has had his work photographed in some of the coast’s most well-known beach locations. If it wasn’t for COVID, Pete may not have built his first project – a warhorse in Terrigal – that popped up during the peak of the lockdowns. The Bamboo Buddha cafe and nursery increased the amount of local produce on offer during COVID and held ‘in-house concerts’ where local artists recorded music that people could enjoy at home, virtually, while the venue delivered meals to their door. It’s been heartwarming to see a community like ours stand behind each other. And with spring now in full bloom, perhaps we can all do with a bit of a fresh start, adapting and blossoming with the changes ahead, embracing all the challenges that may come our way with an optimistic outlook. Despite the uncertain future ahead, 2020 has made us appreciate the simple things, like family, creativity and getting out and about in nature more. And that to me is a blessing that many of us did not see coming.

NORAH HEAD

Quiet and unassuming, Norah Head may just be the Central Coast’s best kept secret

Norah Head, with its rugged coastline, white sand, iconic lighthouse and simplistic charm may be lesser known than buzzy tourist hubs like Terrigal or The Entrance, but for many, that is the big appeal.

Tours are available, and you can even stay in the Keepers Quarters, a truly unique place to rest and a perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.

It is one of the Central Coast’s most unspoiled hidden gems, a sleepy beach town, sitting pretty just north of the Tuggerah Lake.

A lookout near the lighthouse is probably the best position for whale spotting, a popular thing to do in Norah Head between the months of May and November.

Directly east of Lake Munmorah and Budgewoi Lake, with the Wyrrabalong National Park to the south and the Munmorah State Conservation Area just north, there is plenty of space to discover the diverse surrounding environment.

The annual Whale Dreamers Festival celebrates the wonder of these magnificent mammals, raising funds for conservation and research projects about whales.

Relish in the natural surroundings by enjoying a scenic bushwalk, discover the heritage-listed lighthouse or watch whales from several perfect vantage points. The lakes are ideal for activities like fishing, water skiing, canoeing or sailboarding. For beachgoers, Soldiers Beach is an awesome spot for swimming and surfing. The Norah Head lighthouse is perhaps what the suburb is best known for. A striking feature sitting prominently on the craggy headland overlooking the beach, it is the last colonial built lighthouse on the NSW coast and full of history. 6

A bush trail leading from the Bush Street Reserve to the Norah Head lighthouse takes about an hour to hike and offers the most incredible view over Norah Head Rock Pool and Cabbage Tree Harbour. You can also find some unique rainforest trails in the Wyrrabalong National Park near Magenta. Under a canopy of towering corkwoods, cabbage tree palms and tuckeroos you will find the Lillypilly loop trail, which includes the coast’s largest remaining stand of coastal or ‘littoral’ rainforest. Via a sandy track there is the 3.4km Red Gum trail, surrounded in majestic red gum forest backed by water views.

the island cafe frankie lifestyle Terrigal’s Yasmin Starkey always dreamed about opening her own clothing store, so in 2016 she took the plunge, opening Frankie Lifestyle – a boutique clothing and lifestyle shop in the beautiful seaside suburb of Norah Head. Named in honour of her adorable Samoyed puppy Frankie, the store offers a new style of boutique shopping to the area, with a mix of both fashion and homewares handpicked by Yas – who shares that she loves showcasing a great selection of much loved Australian brands. “Assembly Label is a favourite Aussie label of mine, it’s just such good quality and really suits the relaxed, coastal style of the store,” she said. “Superga sneakers are my everyday shoe, they go with just about any outfit. Midsummer Star is another favourite Aussie label of mine, their jewellery is just so unique and beautiful.”

This fresh new café on Bungary Rd offers a relaxed vibe for locals and visitors. Highlights include their veggie burgers, white chocolate raspberry Blondie, coffee, rich creamy milkshakes in mason jars, bacon and egg relish wraps and hearty soups.

the general store

It has been a whirlwind for go-getter Yas, who has recently had her second child, whilst continuing to run her business throughout COVID-19. “Covid was tough, I made the decision to close the shop for a short time until restrictions eased up, especially being pregnant, I felt like it was the right decision,” she said. “But I enjoyed focusing on my online store and personally delivering to customers via contactless delivery, all over the Central Coast.” Yasmin grew up on the northern end of the Central Coast and said the Norah Head was a real hidden gem. www.frankielifestyle.com.au Instagram: @frankielifestylestore

Previously known as the Ark café, The General Store is a well-known and cherished institution in Norah Head. Run by locals who love the area, their food philosophy is fresh, local and seasonal. Located right next to the beach and a nature trail that leads to the Lighthouse lookout, the location is perfect for exploring with a rockpool down below that is perfect for swimming with kids. Menu favourites include unique items like plant based waffles, vegetarian haloumi bowls with pumpkin hummus, burrito bowls and burgers. 7

A

Rush

OF

I N S P I R AT I O N Local artist Pete Rush had no idea about the phenomenon he was about to create during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been nothing short of incredible.

8

At a time when most of the world was locked down and despondent, Pete Rush was sculpting a little bit of magic in Terrigal.

The striking sculpture was best seen against the dusky sunset and crashing waves, which add to the dramatic effect of the moody piece.

The local artist has received a huge amount of attention since the creation of his inspirational beach sculptures, which he started constructing during the early days of the pandemic.

He fashioned a futuristic concept called ‘Humpback Whale 20 million years from now’ in Spoon Bay. The evolutionary creation symbolises a prediction of what a whale may look like in 20 million years if they evolve into land-dwelling omnivores.

“It started with the little war horse in Terrigal. I picked up a piece of effervescence and started making it. People started calling out to me, saying that it made their day,” he said. “Everyone was so depressed and worried at the time, so I decided to make more sculptures. I think the sculptures invoked this sense of going back to basics, and resonated at the right time.” The driftwood sculpture – a symbolic three dimensional riderless Anzac horse – struck a chord with locals, so soon, more artworks began to appear all over the place. Made from all natural materials, there has been a black swan made from dead vines on the mud flats in front of the Avoca Beach Scout Hall, a raven at Killcare, a pelican at the Skillion. Plus a dragon not far from that, an antelope drinking at the lagoon and more. The biggest and arguably most famous sculpture was a woolly mammoth at Copacabana, made just from driftwood and seaweed. ‘A hunch in conflict with a niggling doubt’ is one of his most unique creations featuring two fictional creatures head butting near the lake between Copacabana and Macmasters beaches. Penguin Image: Bernie Humphries

Rush said that all the sculptures would eventually be pulled down by himself, because the beach views “belong to everyone”. “I do all the work myself and don’t want help, I also don’t want these sculptures going in a gallery because they belong on the beach,” he adds. Working mostly at night, he uses only a Stanley knife and a long gardening tool to complete his masterpieces. Having done no sculpture work before, the Avoca writer previously worked on storyboards for film and advertising, along with some seascape paintings. Pete hopes to continue the project over the coming months but after an unexpected refusal from council for the funding, there are hopes that a crowdfunding campaign will keep the energy alive. “People have been so lovely – the response has been wonderful,” he adds. Take time out to visit Pete’s sculptures whilst they are on show.

Rainforest

RETREAT

Wander the tranquil grounds, enjoy a flavoursome meal and immerse yourself in another world at the Bamboo Buddha

Nestled into the rainforest in Holgate you will find the Bamboo Buddha, a beloved local institution that is so much more than a vegetarian café. Constructed among natural vegetation, the picturesque venue features charming little bridges, Buddha statues and a central koi and goldfish pond that will transport you to Bali. Tanya Hazlewood and her husband Oliver Kuster fell in love with the space four and a half years ago. While they have made a few small changes over the years, they have kept the overall vibe and set-up true to its core. The Bamboo Buddha is a place to be nurtured through food and the surrounding environment. There is a colourful range of delicious vegetarian and vegan food – homemade cakes and soups, slow cooked curries or the famous Buddha Burger, made from a vegan walnut patty on a whole wheat roll with salad, and a side of rosemary salted potatoes. Owner Tanya said that patrons returned to the Bamboo Buddha post the COVID-19 lockdowns, craving some much needed fresh air in the soothing space. It is a restful place to enjoy organic coffee and gorgeous teas while basking in the ambience. “We offered takeaway throughout COVID. After which, we wanted to create a comforting space for staff and the community to connect with each other, not physically but with nature,” she said. There is a strong sense here of supporting ‘local’, something that Tanya mentioned had really ramped up in recent times. There are handmade earrings and necklaces by local mum Heidi at Happy Chance Finds. Jams, relishes and fruit butters by local chef Joy from Soul Food Gluten free. Seasonal fruit and vegetable boxes fresh from the markets delivered by The Fruit Spot. As well as gluten free bread by Naturally Gluten Free and Matcham Gold Honey from BeeUtiful Honey.

The café uses the Central Coast’s famous Little Creek cheeses and you can also find a wide variety of sweet treats made locally like mouth-watering apple berry crumbles, salted caramel macadamia tarts, lemon myrtle and white chocolate brownies, vegan carrot cake, vegan cupcakes – supplied by Soul Food Gluten Free, The Brownie Lady and Constant Craving Cakes. Famous local country singer Kasey Chambers has performed at the Bamboo Buddha and regularly visits, referring to it as her ‘happy place’. The venue hosts a number of events and activities each week, and recently, during the pandemic lockdown, they held two ‘house concerts’ where local artists recorded music that people could enjoy at home while the venue delivered meals to their door. Acclaimed musician and director Andrew Worboys, sax player Paul Chennard and singers Pippa Grandison and Shauna Jensen were part of the occasion. In addition, you can partake in a range of yoga classes with experienced teachers. Styles include Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa and Kundalini. There are also monthly sound baths, a popular relaxation technique and meditative experience whereby participants ‘bathe’ in the sound waves produced by the human voice as well as instruments such as chimes, gongs, drums and singing bowls. In the future, the Bamboo Buddha plans to collaborate with Fires Creek, a Holgate winery that handcraft an innovative and diverse variety of awardwinning fruit, flower and herb wines. They also plan to offer lunch and wine tasting with local tours. If you’re in the Holgate area, we recommend paying the Bamboo Buddha a visit.

Fluffy goodness

FOR EVERYONE Welcome to Bouffant, the coast’s newest pastry franchise headed up by one of the region’s best hospitality operators Running food venues around the Central Coast for around 15 years, Andrew Mansfield is a man who knows how to satisfy a growing number of local foodies. His East Gosford café Ooomph has seen patrons queuing out the door for years, with café-goers loving the high-quality coffee, delicious flaky pastries, organic local products and buzzy atmosphere. Having previously opened Ooomph Avoca and Harryfields at Mosman, the hospitality powerhouse has now branched out on a new venture; opening three new pastry venues in East Gosford and Gosford and another soon to open its doors in Terrigal.

However, it is the signature pastry that people are really going nuts for. Made from croissant pastry, the Bouffant is a truly delectable sweet treat. Baked fresh and bursting with delicious filling, popular flavours include lemon meringue and vanilla slice. And isn’t just the sweet-tooth’s who will have a field day in here. There is freshly baked sourdough, cheese toasties, mushroom pies and of course the top quality baristamade coffee for which Ooomph is so well-known. Bouffant is opening a new bakery in Pine Tree Lane, Terrigal in October. Call in to taste Bouffants delights when you’re next in the neighborhood.

With the tagline ‘fluffy goodness for everyone’, Bouffant is a brand inspired by Mansfield’s relationship with Swiss Spanish pastry chef Markus Kunz, who has worked with him on and off for six years. The pair based the concept on the popular Spanish bakery ‘Granier’, whereby the owner mastered the formula of crafting quality pastries at an affordable price. “The croissants don’t all need to look perfect or the same, it is all about ensuring that the texture and taste are perfect, which Markus has really perfected,” Mansfield says. “So far the result in East Gosford has been phenomenal. People seem to love buying large quantities and sharing with friends. There is so much happy chatter from patrons in our establishment.” With everything made in the commercial kitchen before 5am by Markus, the bakery offers a multitude of guilty pleasure items that will leave you drooling for your next cheat meal. Think buttery, flaky almond croissants, melt in your mouth mini danishes, moreish vanilla tarts oozing with custard, perhaps a glazed caramel-filled donut.

Introducing LuxeHome.Shop With five distinct décor styles and a big range of luxury furniture and homewares, this Central Coast based online business is one to watch

Killcare Heights couple Geoff Gazzard and Louise Vangestel live and breathe the world of home styling. The savvy duo recently launched LuxeHome.Shop, a onestop online store featuring a range of luxury furniture and homeware sourced from some of Australia’s leading manufacturers and import wholesalers. Moving to the coast five years ago, Geoff and Louise purchased their dream beach shack with a view to renovating it, and the project has been a labour of love ever since. “During this process, we redecorated our home with furniture and decor very much with a coastal influence, but we found that no single wholesaler could offer us the variety of selection we wanted,” Louise shares. “LuxeHome.Shop has been very much born out of our own personal challenges in curating selections that not only cover our tastes but a variety of tastes.” With enormous choice in furniture, art, lighting, homewares and renovation enhancements, there are five iconic décor styles featured – Hamptons, Hollywood Regency, French Provincial, Modern Scandi and Industrial Warehouse.

14

“We believe that this range will cover about 90 percent of the market,” Louise adds. “The underlying principle is that whatever style one subscribes to, we at LuxeHome. Shop stand for quality and luxury, not only in terms of product but in service.” With Geoff ’s background as a furniture wholesaler and Louise’s experience as a corporate executive, the couple look set to achieve some big goals for 2020, despite launching amid the pandemic. “It turned out to be a great time to launch, with an increased appetite for buying online and making home improvements,” Geoff said. “The Central Coast is a great location, with more people being able to live regionally and the impending opening up of the Northconnex tunnel will make moving here permanently more viable.” LuxeHome.Shop is an online only store, visit www.luxehome.shop to see their full product range.

elegant coastal

Hamptons Inspired by the beauty of the Australian coastline, LuxeHome.Shop has curated a catalogue of Hamptons furniture and décor that stay true to the core design principles inspired by the group of villages called The Hamptons on Long Island, New York; which has come to represent elegant and relaxed coastal living. Living in beautiful Killcare this style is especially special to us as we can draw so much parallel between the retreats of these coastal havens from the stifling metropolis of New York and the sanctity of our easy/carefree coastal villages and their proximity to the metropolis of Sydney. People come here to escape the hustle and bustle of big city living and this décor style allows them to easily slip into a sense of relaxed but sophisticated comfort.

a natural palette Modern Scandi 16

Emerging in the 1950s alongside the Modernist movement in Europe and America, the style prioritized democratic, affordable, and sleek furnishings and interiors. LuxeHome.Shop has embraced this iconic design style and has assembled an enviable collection of pieces that reflect the clean lines, functional furnishings, and a neutral palette that are the hallmarks of Scandinavian Modern design and that have become so popular in homes throughout Australia.

Industrial Warehouse It’s about proudly displaying the building materials that many try to conceal. It’s about adding a raw, unfinished look to the most thoughtfully designed homes. It’s about selecting pieces that are as much about function as style. The result: a “warehouse look” that combines a true industrial feel with a range of other styles, from the earthy to the polished. With our curated range of designer furniture and décor we completely embrace this very popular décor style at LuxeHome.Shop

raw and edgy French Provincial The French Provincial style emerged from a rustic take on furnishings that were popular with the 18th-century courts of Kings Louis the XIII, XVI, XV and XIV. The goal in a French provincial design is to create an interior that is rustic and yet chic. Many design purists will argue Hamptons design had its influence from French Country and we at LuxeHome.Shop will not argue with that. This is a style that has been around for centuries with its warm, eclectic tones and we fully embrace it with our curated design catalogue.

glamour and grace

Hollywood Regency Inspired by the glamour of yesteryear Hollywood – think Casa Blanca, Gone With The Wind and other classics that have stood the test of time so too has this style of décor that had its beginnings in the 1930’s during the golden age of Hollywood. Among this glamorous range is a collection that hails all the way from Europe and new to Australian shores. This highend range is sure to turn any home into one reminiscent of the glamour and ritz associated with its namesake “Hollywood” . 17

THE INSPIRING

DIRRAMU

Remembered by long term residents of the Central Coast as the old Bouddi Nursery, Dirramu continues to enchant these days in the form of a premium garden acreage “Dirramu”, meaning trees to the Darug Clan of the Eora Nation, is a garden-centric private residence for sale in the Killcare Heights triangle. It nestles into the native corridor between the Bouddi National Park and Hardys Bay. Set on six pristine acres, owners Susan Brooks and Janis McAloon have rebuilt an architecturally stunning four bedroom contemporary home to enhance, embrace and sit within the surrounding magnificent gardens and landscaping. Also featuring an art studio, pool and a tenanted secondary dwelling, the property presents an exceptional tree change lifestyle minutes from the communities of Hardy’s Bay and Killcare and their local beaches and national parks. Dirramu is about the garden. It was established as a nursery by Sheila and Chris Wilmott because of the exceptional horticultural properties of the deep red laterite soils and year round temperate climate. It was later taken over by renowned landscape gardener Susan MunroRoss who integrated the exotic trees and established plantings into the first stage of what it has become today. The current owners have continued the transformation. It is a seduction that starts from the minute you enter the gates. Native flora forms much of the perimeter and, as you approach the inner gardens, you notice the beautiful array of exotic trees and shrubs. Looking out from the main outdoor terrace, a South American tippuana tree and a striking canary date palm take centre stage, standing proud against the backdrop of picturesque gardens. Near the pool a Californian redwood dominates while magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and other shrubs form the basis of various formal and informal rooms of the garden. “Spring is the best season to be here”, says Janis. “It’s the time for the annual carpet of vibrant pink tassel-like flowers to burst forth on my favourite tree, a large Lorapetalum near the front door. It’s also the time for the echiums carrying hundreds of buds, to produce their stunning blue flowers.” The property has a number of distinctly different areas including lawned gardens, an enchanting sub-tropical section, a citrus grove and an area of native eucalypts, callistemons and turpentines. Embankments at the front and rear and rows of native grasses and grevilleas have been 18

designed to attract a variety of birdlife. Kookaburras, lorikeets, king parrots, brown cuckoo doves, bower birds, wrens and eastern spine bills visit Dirramu. While the grounds are something to behold, the main house holds its own. It features striking forms and minimalist interior spaces delivering a residence of zen-like simplicity and serenity. The unique and thoroughly modern design is one of clean architectural lines paired with a rich palette of natural materials and organic finishes. Galleries of glass create an immediate connection to the environment, with living spaces extending to decks overlooking the wonderful surrounds. Features include timber floors, wine cellar, kitchen with butler’s pantry and an incredible main bedroom with dressing room and all-encompassing views of the gardens. Outside on the terrace is a perfect place to dine alfresco, a glass of wine in hand and a fresh pizza cooking in the woodfire oven. “Our focus is never really on what’s inside the house, it is always on what’s happening outside. Birds, new foliage and flowers, small changes in light or wind, all captivate your attention,“ Susan said. “Self-isolating is very easy here”. Enquiries about Dirramu can be made via Cathy Baker at Belle Property Hardys Bay.

WHY SPRING IS THE PERFECT TIME TO LIST OR BUY AN ACREAGE Spring is undoubtedly the most inspiring time of the year to list or buy an acreage. It is hard not to get swept up in the idea of creating your own private sanctuary among nature, and during these times of uncertainty, people are flocking to the fresh air and open spaces on offer on the Central Coast. Dirramu occupies a special place in the hearts of Susan and Janis. When asked for her top gardening tips for Spring, Janis said “to really profit from Spring’s burst of new growth, it’s time to fertilise, mulch and restock garden beds”.

Being close to nature is scientifically proven to make you feel better emotionally, it can contribute to physical wellbeing, reduce blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. For example, close your eyes and transport yourself to an inspiring eco-friendly acreage near Copacabana Beach.

‘Elim’ at 310 Cullens Rd, Kincumber

was once part of a large farm where vegetables were grown before plots of land were subdivided. Acreages in the estate are largely unknown to locals. Owner Vicki Hopkins said that people were often surprised to discover her little piece of heaven near the beach. “I moved here to be with my husband four years ago and every time I travelled from Sydney I would feel so excited,” she said. “It is like a hidden Eden, there is just this sense of peace as soon as you drive in the driveway. You get this hint of the ocean in the distance that calls us for a beach walk or a swim. It is a very special place.” A Biblical term meaning oasis, Elim is an Australiana paradise with rosellas, rainbow lorikeets, bellbirds, kookaburras, wallabies and bilbies to name a few. There is a modern architect-designed single-level home, full-sized tennis court and fully selfcontained guest house that feature on the rolling green cleared lawns surrounded in bushland. Sunlit decks are immersed in stunning gardens created by Michael Cooke, a renowned landscape gardener who has created some of the Central Coast’s most beautiful and exclusive gardens. Coming to life in spring, there are a huge variety of plants and shrubs including Lord Howe irises, plumbago, bromeliads near the fish pond, and salvia’s, hydrangea and aloe’s throwing out pops of colour here and there. There are white crepe myrtles with large cycads at their base, which bring an element of tranquillity. Grevilleas, lilly pillys, banksias, gymea lilies and native grasses add to the Australiana feel. In summer the frangipani’s bloom in abundance. The home has been crafted to take full advantage of its site, oriented and constructed to provide cooling breezes and shade in the summer months while capturing abundant sun during the winter. BELLE PROPERTY CENTRAL COAST

When you talk about a good real estate agent, words like ‘professional’ or ‘driven’ often spring to mind, and while those things are certainly a big aspect of the job, it can often be the more humble qualities that appeal to people when they think about buying or selling a home.

Cathy, Kiara & Linda Kindness, authenticity and a sense of community are important elements for an allround successful real estate agent, who can often be seen as a leader or trailblazer in their local region. At Belle Property Central Coast, it all started with Principal Cathy Baker, who started a real estate office in Killcare in 2015 and has since cemented her place as a market leader in prestige homes. Over the past five years, Belle Property has seen significant expansion, growing from a Killcare based agency to adding a second team based in Terrigal. Cathy and her team of real, authentic agents will now operate under the name Belle Property Central Coast, and are excited to be able to broaden their property services across the entire region. On top of winning several prestigious awards and leading the coast as a top-selling agent, Cathy has a passion for supporting local people and small businesses, as well as fundraising for a number of local charities and volunteering efforts. Killy Cares is a registered, community based charity established by Cathy to draw on the compassion, generosity and expertise that exists within the local Bouddi community, supporting and assisting local residents in times of need. Cathy also organises a yearly event, Belles Bubbles and Boobies - a breast cancer fundraising luncheon. Cathy loves employing and working with talented individuals helping them embrace their area of property expertise and becoming involved in their individual communities, whether it be through sport, kids or just friendly social experiences with local residents. Alongside her talented personal assistant Kiara Fardnava and newly appointed buyers concierge Linda Gibbens, Cathy is constantly striving to make a difference, while growing her dynamic team.

An enthusiastic member and volunteer at Macmasters Surf Lifesaving Club, he sponsors numerous activities that benefit both the club and community and he also does a volunteer shift behind the bar at the Surf Club. Baraka has a great relationship with his clients – one example is Sharyn, a Killcare Heights resident whom he connected with over their mutual love of Samoyed dogs. Considered romantic enough for a feature on Channel Nine’s Married at First Sight, Clare De Lune is one of Belle Escape’s most popular holiday escapes.

The second level is the heart of the home with the kitchen, open plan living and dining areas. The balcony has a large dining table with uninterrupted views, and there is a hallway which leads to two beautifully styled bedrooms.

With captivating Brisbane Water views, the absolute waterfront home in Point Clare comes with a heated salt water pool, an internal lift servicing three levels, and its own jetty.

PRESTIGE PROPERTY

PROVES TO BE PANDEMIC-PROOF Cathy Baker, Principal of Belle Property Central Coast, share’s her insights on the property market’s movements throughout 2020.

The pandemic is having a once-in-a-lifetime ripple effect on the Central Coast as flexible working conditions allow workers permission to move further away from the city. Weekender homes are now becoming permanent residences and Sydneysiders are looking for luxurious ways to indulge closer to home this holiday season. While this year has presented its share of problems for all of us, the Central Coast and its stunning array of luxury homes has been a bright spot amid the COVID craziness. At Belle Property Central Coast, we’ve just had one of our busiest periods ever, transacting a year’s worth of private house sales in just two winter months.

“We’ve had our busiest winter ever, closing a year’s worth of property sales in two months.” I started my real estate career in 2009 when the world was still reeling from the GFC, so I’ve seen the property market at its worst, as well as its best, and while some other parts of the country might be suffering from a pandemic property slump, there’s no doubt that the Central Coast’s prestige property market is having its moment in the sun. THE COAST WITH THE MOST At a time when social distancing, lockdowns, masks and travel bans have become the norm, luxury isn’t just a beautiful waterfront property, it is also about finding plenty of space and freedom away from the congestion of the city. 38

With its endless string of pristine coastline to the east, tranquil bushland and hinterland to the west and picturesque waterways woven in-between, the Central Coast is a natural wonderland that has provided the perfect antidote to the anxiety and stress of these past six months. Unsurprisingly, there has been an upswing in Sydneysiders taking refuge on the Central Coast and in an interesting new trend, many weekenders have reversed their lifestyle so that the coast is home and Sydney receives the occasional weekend visit. Others have taken the opportunity to finally cut ties with the city and make the Central Coast their one and only home, with the current conditions providing the right moment to buy in anticipation of a potential recession.

“With overseas holidays off the cards, there has never been a better time to immerse in the Central Coast’s idyllic lifestyle.” There have been plenty of retirees downsizing to smaller homes and swanky apartments, and families, largely migrating from the Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches are choosing to upsize to larger properties with plenty of outdoor space. With overseas holidays off the cards and lucrative rental returns on the Central Coast, there has never been a better time to purchase a holiday home in our idyllic region. Even better, make a permanent move here. Every week I’m adding more stunning waterfront properties and country acreages to our books, with Tumbi Umbi, Holgate and Matcham all vying to be the northern Bowral.

STAY OR PLAY The Central Coast is home to some of the world’s most exquisite luxury holiday houses and here at Belle Property, my team and I look after the crème de la crème as part of Belle Property Escapes. With the pandemic closing borders and grinding overseas travel to a halt, the Central Coast’s luxury accommodation has been more popular than ever, producing one of the best winter holiday seasons we’ve seen. We like to think Belle Property’s concierge service will smooth over any disappointment from missing an overseas holiday. That might be touching down in a helicopter at one of our exclusive Killcare Heights acreages or gliding into one of the Central Coast’s newest and most prestigious beachfront holiday homes on a seaplane. Followed by a private yoga class and a meal prepared by a chef, luxury holidays just don’t get much better. THE PLACE TO BE Over the years I’ve sold many exclusive waterfront properties and hinterland hideaways to celebrities, CEOs, Sydney buyer’s agents and through partnerships such as Darren Curtis from Christie’s International. Since COVID hit, there has been an increase in top end buyers wanting a getaway or home with more space and privacy. Despite the pandemic, we’ve witnessed a significant amount of interest in prestige Central Coast properties, with more than $80 million in sales throughout July and August 2020 including a new record for the Central Coast as well as several other suburb records, with some exceeding previous records by over a million.

My prediction is that buyer interest will continue to grow as we approach the school holidays and summer season. Whilst interstate and overseas travel restrictions remain in place Sydneysiders will be visiting the Central Coast in droves, with most holiday accommodation now at capacity. ON ROUTE TO GREATER ACCESS There’s no denying that the Central Coast’s popularity started prepandemic. It has always been a sought-after destination but with more flexible working conditions meaning less time commuting, it has become that much easier to live here. Express trains and the NorthConnex tunnel (close to completion) only improve this further. Perhaps the biggest silver lining to the pandemic is that it’s expedited this trend to live, stay and play north of Sydney. And as the region evolves and grows with the influx of Sydneysiders, we’re seeing the arrival of more luxuries one might be accustomed to in the city – small bars, celebrity chef restaurants, art galleries and great coffee – all the trimmings but with less traffic and more space. If you’re thinking of buying, selling or escaping to the NSW Central Coast, get in touch with me or my team at Belle Property Central Coast. COVID has given us all a rare opportunity to reevaluate life, make some big changes and create more balance. I know I’ve enjoyed the additional unexpected time with my boys these past six months – it is a rare opportunity that we have made the most of as a family.
