EDITOR’S LETTER

Welcome to the summer edition of Central Coast Life & Style. In this edition, we’re showcasing our beautiful region in all its summer splendour and suggesting ways you can re-energise and refocus yourself for the year ahead. I’m particularly fond of the summer months, and after a challenging 2020 I feel it’s time for all of us to put our feet up and take a respite, don’t you? For this edition, I was honoured to have model and TV personality Elyse Knowles, and her partner Josh Barker, stay at our newly appointed Belle Escapes holiday home, Waters Edge in Forresters Beach. It was a blessing for Elyse to take a break and be pampered, especially as she embarks on her first pregnancy. Having had four boys myself, I shared a few of my own secrets to maintaining time for yourself throughout motherhood. It’s a challenge, right! Whether you live on the Central Coast or are just visiting, we’ve included things to see, places to eat and shop, as well as insights into what inspires us about living or visiting the many beautiful pockets along our coastline. We’ve filled our pages with heaps of summertime inspiration for you, from health and wellbeing, to summer fashion, as well as food to envy and places to frolic. We’ve also included a few properties and holiday escapes to inspire visitors to invest more time on the NSW Central Coast. We will also be hosting our summer festival for the third year in a row, in conjunction with Killcare Surf Club. From the 3rd to the 8th of January, we invite you to join us in a collaboration of art, fashion, food, and fun activities for all generations. More details to follow on our socials. From my entire team at Central Coast Life & Style, I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year. Let’s make sure we continue to prioritise the safety of all members of our community, as well as spend as much quality time as possible with our family and friends. Cheers!

Cathy

YOU WON’T REGRET BUYING A

Weekender

Cathy Baker from Belle Property sheds light on the performance of holiday homes as an investment. Plus Cathy shares why she believes the NSW Central Coast is a better buy for property investors than places like Byron, Berry or the Blue Mountains. We’ve seen a significant upswing in buyer interest across all classes of property on the Central Coast in recent months – in particular with rentals, first homebuyers and prestige property. Our region’s rental vacancy rate is at an extraordinarily low 0.5 per cent and according to Domain data, median house prices rose 3.8 per cent in the past quarter. Sydneysiders are leaving the city in droves, relocating to regional areas such as the Central Coast in search of a better lifestyle, exercising their freedom provided with flexible work from home arrangements.

LET US PLAN YOUR PERFECT

The new normal sees people choosing to live and work somewhere scenic and peaceful, for almost half the price than the cost of living in Sydney – and, why wouldn’t they?

But what’s been most interesting is that there’s been a knock on effect to holiday homes, with people now purchasing a second home on the Central Coast which they rent out in between using it themselves. Of my last 90 property sales, 75 buyers were holiday house investors. These buyers share a similar tale; having found it difficult to book accommodation in Byron Bay they reconsidered places, such as the NSW Central Coast as excellent alternatives and better still only a stone’s throw from Sydney city enabling them to vacation more frequently. Plus with overseas travel off the table, government lending criteria lifted and interest rates at an all time low, buyers are finding they can save deposits and secure home loans more easily. CENTRAL COAST

As an example, an acreage we advertised at 38 Mittara Road, Terrigal received 220 inquiries in the first 24 hours, 40 inspections on the opening

weekend and we issued a couple of contracts almost immediately. Most interested parties were looking for a weekender investment. People are starting to recognise that the Central Coast is extremely well located. Gosford is just 1 hour and seven minutes from the Sydney CBD without traffic – that is closer than Leura in the Blue Mountains or Wollongong. The new Northconnex motorway is saving motorists about 15 minutes overall, alleviating pressure on Pennant Hills Road, one of the state’s most congested highways. Because people can’t travel internationally, they are looking closer to home for their holidays. Most of the holiday homes rented through my business Belle Escapes are booked several months ahead of time. Investors are therefore more comfortable investing in holiday houses whilst there’s this guaranteed return. Top end holiday homes can earn up to $250,000 per year, with entry-level cottages bringing in around $40,000 per annum. Home buyers also like having a dual living option to consider for the future. COVID has made people more conscious of their lifestyle needs, and they now see home life closer to the coast as an inspiring alternative to Sydney suburbia or Sydney city. As a long time resident of the Central Coast myself, I can tell you that you will not regret investing in a house here, or moving to the region permanently. Every day, I am inspired by the beauty of our surrounding landscape, our easy going community and ever evolving entertainment culture. With the affordability factor (in comparison to Sydney) it is a joy to sell and rent property on the NSW Central Coast. As we witness the start of a property boom across our region it’s great to see that people now recognise that it is truly a great place to invest. 7

“Josh and I usually camp, so to stay in a beautiful luxury home is a real treat for us, it is very calming,”

“When I travel like this, I love to arrive, unpack my clothes, make myself at home and then relax, which is unheard of for us.” Taking a 7.5 hour road trip from Byron Bay, the couple arrived to be greeted by a striking sunset. A palette of pink, purple and blue framed a remarkable sky above the beach house, which is located adjacent to sand dunes along ruggedly beautiful Forresters Beach.

A weekend escape with

Elyse Knowles Model Elyse Knowles and her partner Josh Barker spent a weekend relaxing on the Central Coast where they got to experience one of the region’s most phenomenal beach side holiday homes at Forresters beach. Elyse spoke exclusively with Central Coast Life & Style about her pregnancy, how she unwinds on vacation and what she loves about the region., writes Jess Verrender As a leading Australian model, reality television star, fashion designer, writer, brand ambassador and environmentalist, Elyse Knowles has built a stellar career using old fashioned hard work and her entrepreneurial instinct. As big brands clamber to work with Elyse, she finds herself as an ambassador for Myer, Land Rover and TAG Heuer, as well as the face of Aveda. She has now garnered an enviable position where she can pick and choose her partnerships and work with brands that align with her personal ethos. But the Byron Bay based fashion icon is about to embark on her biggest challenge yet – the birth of her first child. In an adorable Instagram post, 8

Elyse and Josh Barker announced that they are expecting their first baby, due in March 2021. The busy couple, who won Channel Nine’s The Block back in 2017, recently enjoyed a well-deserved break on the Central Coast, staying at one of Belle Escapes most stunning beach side holiday houses. For Elyse, having experienced some morning sickness during the first trimester, it was perfect timing to enjoy a bit of relaxation in an idyllic location. “Josh and I usually camp, so to stay in a beautiful luxury home is a real treat for us, it is very calming,” she told Central Coast Life & Style magazine.

The home, called Waters Edge at Forresters, is a truly phenomenal property offered by Belle Escapes, a premium holiday house brand that specialises in concierge services designed to deliver luxury and a personalised service to guests. Upon arrival, Elyse and Josh were fervent with excitement. This dream home boasts understated luxury and panoramic ocean views, with floor to ceiling glass and sweeping 180-degree views across one of the coast’s most incredible vistas. “We had no preconceived ideas about the location or what the house was going to be like, but we were blown away with what we found,” Elyse said. “We especially loved having private access to the beach, over the rolling grass hills. There’s a beautiful room downstairs for everyone to chill – perfect for visiting friends or family, where you can open up all the glass doors to entertain with a barbecue or a picnic.” The couple are both architecture and interior design enthusiasts. Since winning The Block, Elyse and Josh have started a building business of their own, J&E Projects, while simultaneously becoming promising investors in the Australian property market. This creative couple have a keen interest and eye for details when it comes to home renovations and styling. “We explored the property and had a good look around, looking at the way the house has been designed to capitalise on the natural light, airflow and access to the beach. We like taking into consideration all those elements of a build,” Elyse said. Designed by prominent architect Darren Tye, the newly built Waters Edge at Forresters was constructed with the view as a focal point. To stand anywhere in the house feels like being wrapped in the ocean. Upstairs you’ll find a chic modern kitchen overlooking a spacious and airy lounge, with dining area that opens to a large deck with barbecue. The blackbutt ceiling and panoramic ocean views are breathtaking.

Downstairs there are four beautifully designed coastal bedrooms (three with ocean views and the fourth with a garden view). In addition, there’s a huge al fresco area with glass bifolds, ocean views and a grassy yard leading to the sand via a private sandstone path. “To be able to walk along the beach and then straight back up to your home is amazing,” Elyse said. “As we walked along the beach, we enjoyed admiring the mix of beautiful old homes and other spectacular architectural builds that stood out.” Not only did Elyse get to stay in paradise, she was also pampered by a talented group of hosts who work closely with Belle Escapes to provide personalised experiences for holiday guests. Elyse enjoyed an in-house spa treatment where massage therapist Cate used iKOU organic De-Stress massage oil and hydrating body souffle for a relaxing massage. The experience included a calming iKOU face oil infused with neroli essential oil. iKou owner Naomi Whitfeld said Elyse loved the products, designed to deeply relax and hydrate the skin. “Everything was organic and safe for Elyse’s pregnancy,” said Naomi. “Our product development has always stayed true to our personal passion for the protection of animals, the environment and being a business that benefits others. We source and research the impact of our ingredients and methods of production to ensure iKOU is an ethical and sustainable business.” Sounds perfect for Elyse, who was the face of WaterAid Australia between 2014 and 2018. A passionate environmentalist, she assisted the brand with educating the public and spread much needed awareness about giving back and taking immeasurable care of our shared planet. 9

“Being able to enjoy your career and your work life as much as possible, plus making the most of our day-to-day – that’s what Josh and I try to do on a daily, weekly, yearly basis. Making sure we’re actually living and not stressing too much about work. Plus making sure we take time-out to enjoy each other’s company, to have a holiday, and explore our beautiful country,” she shared. “And just breathe – sometimes we forget to do the simple things it seems. I think living by the coast, in Byron Bay, has helped us change our attitude a lot. We prioritise different things and make time for what makes us happy. Simple things like walking on the beach with our dogs makes us very happy.” When asked if the Central Coast trip was her ‘Babymoon’, Elyse said that she hadn’t really thought about it or planned anything specific to welcome her baby. “I don’t think we’ll get another chance to go away with Christmas coming, so maybe you could call it a Babymoon,” she laughed. “Because we live on the beach at Byron, we always have lots of people wanting to come and stay with us over the summer holidays. The baby could be here as soon as February, so we probably won’t go away again.” For two of the three evenings in which Elyse and Josh stayed at Forresters Beach, they had dinner provided by the Private Chef Catering team, local cooks who provide special private dining experiences for Central Coast residents and visitors. Owner chef Dimitris Aronis described Elyse and Josh as ‘down to earth’. He served them tapas on the first night and a full course meal on the second. The tapas evening included grazing dishes such as miso and chilli glazed eggplant, torched scampi tail and roasted ricotta filled mushroom. Dessert was roasted nectarine – a perfect stone fruit for the season – slow roasted in brown sugar with mascarpone cream. On the second night, dinner started with roasted chestnut, truffle and jerusalem artichoke soup. Entrée was caramelised onion and goat’s cheese tart, and the main was a signature eye fillet with cauliflower cream, crispy

kale and roasted baby vegetables. Dessert included the melt-in-yourmouth textures of Belgium tempered chocolate and blueberry, all broken down to look pretty on the plate. “Whilst we serve the meal, we talk to our clients about the produce we have on offer as well as how we work closely with local suppliers to utilise fresh, organic foods,” Dimitris said. “We also provide a special range of salt and oils on the table – in fact, Elyse and her guests were big fans of our charcoal black salt. We also brought along our own lemon infused verbena oil, which was also popular.” Dimitris’ fresh and healthy meals suited Elyse down to a tee, as she is well known for being an advocate of a healthy lifestyle. Eating well and exercise are an integral part to Elyse’s daily regime, and what she associates with ‘having balance’.

WATERS EDGE at Forresters

Elyse said that she thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Central Coast, stepping away from her usual stomping ground, Byron Bay. “Leaving early, we were able to arrive at Forresters Beach by the afternoon,” she said. “We enjoyed spending time in a different environment. The beaches on the Central Coast are very different from northern NSW – the colour of the sand and the terrain with the rocks and sand dunes was refreshing. “It has been nice to explore somewhere different. I think that’s what we all need to do this year, explore Australia whether it’s an hour or two from home or a big road trip in the car – go see somewhere we’ve never been before.” To find out more about the Waters Edge holiday home at Forresters Beach, contact the Belle Escapes team on 02 4360 1717.

Elyse on RENOVATING A HOLIDAY HOUSE “For me, my favourite renovation is a mix between an old heritage home or weatherboard cottage, maybe a queenslander that I can mix with a new contemporary build. I really love homes that have character and soul and I think the exterior needs to have that included also, but the interior also can’t be too cold or sparse. “You also want to design with durability in mind, you don’t want someone to come along and wreck it. You need to balance the luxury of a new build with the character of the original home, especially if the home is to accomodate a family, who want something warm, welcoming and homely. “It’s about creating character where people want to come back and enjoy and experience the home, year after year. A place to create memories and get excited to book into again.”

Paddle & Pearls

You can watch-on as pearls are harvested to see the intricate and detailed work that goes into producing a pearl.

The Central Coast is brimming with high-end holiday spoils. Just ask Elixir Journeys founder Nicola Billens.

Elixir Journeys have partnered with Belle Escapes to offer X marks the spot secret picnics, exclusive to their holiday home guests.

With a background in luxury tourism, having previously worked for Alquemie who specialise in itineraries for high profile international guests, Nicola knows exactly how to please people who want an experience that’s extra special.

Clients are whisked off for the afternoon to a beautiful nature spot, and set up with an exquisitely styled picnic that lays out a range of food and beverages from the region.

As a well connected local, Nicola has partnered with a raft of premium Central Coast tourism operators to package a unique set of daytime and evening excursions. Her well thought out formula of nature experiences coupled with great food and wine hampers ensures you don’t need to lift a finger. From private yacht charters, to mystery beach picnics, helicopter wine tours and carefully crafted luxury experiences, Nicole’s imagination and can-do approach seemingly has no limits. “No request is too much, when it comes to a luxury experience. I love taking a client’s idea and turning it into a tailored experience beyond the guest’s imagination. I get a real kick out of blowing the expectations of my clients out of the water,” Nicola said.

14

Tapping into local companies such as Bells at Killcare, Nicola has brought the best of the best together, showcasing to visitors all that the Central Coast has to offer. The best part is that the experience is a complete mystery. Arrivals from Sydney simply drop off their bags, shed their city shackles and are taken to their surprise destination to enjoy a simple yet elegant picnic in a beach, bay or bush setting. Each picnic setting is decorated to perfection, with an ambience that helps guests let go of life’s chaos and drama, and settle into a dreamlike state of relaxation. Hampers are at the waiting filled with seasonal grazing platters and healthy beverages. To book an X marks the spot secret picnic exclusively through Belle Escapes, contact the team on 02 4360 1717.

As you kayak around the uninhabited nature reserve you’ll see local wildlife such as the pelicans, or birds of prey, that thrive in this abundant natural habitat. You’ll learn how the birdlife is intertwined with the pearl farm and the surrounding ecosystems. Your kayak guide will take you past more oyster and pearl farm leases that surround the island before heading back to the pearl seeding shed. At the pearl seeding shed, what you will see will depend on the seasonal activities. This is a working pearl shed and typically off-limits to the general public. The farming of the pearl is fascinating and the pearling technicians will answer all your questions. Ending, it’s just a short kayak back to base. Price is $247 per person (when shared). More details on the Elixir Journeys website. www.elixirjourneys.com

NICOLA BILLENS Nicola moved to the coast a couple of years ago and instantly recognised hidden potential for bespoke, luxury tourism experiences in the region. Working for Alquemie, she travelled around Australia to get a grasp on the high-end holiday market and then travelled around the world pitching ideas for luxury experiences to clients. But it was only when she moved to the Bouddi Peninsula, just a stone’s throw from Palm Beach, that she realised how under appreciated the Central Coast region truly was. “Every time I visited somewhere myself, around the coast, I thought about how perfect it would be for my clients that I’ve worked with previously,” she said. “Living here has shown me that there is actually so much to offer, so close to Sydney. I’ve travelled the world to all seven continents and I can speak with confidence when I say that the NSW Central Coast really is a hidden gem just waiting to be explored by both international and domestic travellers.” 15

It is everyone’s favourite time of the year to get outside, but too much sun can wreak havoc on your skin. Local ‘skin whisperer’ Vita Catanzariti shares her expertise on caring for skin during the hotter months.

The Central Coast is one of the most amazing places to be over the summer months. With incredible beaches, divine al fresco eateries and scenic spots for outdoor activities, there is no doubt that December to February is the most popular time to get outside and enjoy all that the area has to offer. Sunshine is good for the soul, and getting the right amount can have lots of mood lifting benefits. However, during the hot Aussie summer months, most people are prone to over exposure, resulting in increased dryness and dehydration. It is something that skincare professional Vita Catanzariti of Dolce Vita Skin sees a lot of at her Erina clinic. “Around 80 per cent of the guests we see have skin pigmentation issues like sunspots and sun damage. We have a beautiful lifestyle here on the Central Coast, but along with that comes irregularity when it comes to skin,” she said. “My advice, which is paramount, is to wear 30-50 per cent SPF rain, hail or shine.

16

“On top of that, I can help my clients develop a tailored treatment plan that includes diet, lifestyle and what we use on the skin. Antioxidants are really important. Considering all these things and putting a plan into place, you can truly reverse the signs of ageing.” One of the luminaries of the skincare world, Vita is a highly renowned skincare professional, whose leading treatments and superior results have earned her the name of ‘Skin Whisperer’. A highly trained Dermal Therapist and Laser Safety Officer, Vita uses many products that require therapeutic dosages and only available through her clinic. The medispa’s extensive treatment menu includes everything from facials, micro-needling and laser, through to advanced aesthetic medical treatments and holistic nutrition and wellness consultations. Vita works with Senior Cosmetic Injector and GP ‘Dr Nik’ Davies, merging her cutting edge treatments with his, to create personalised anti-ageing formulas for each unique client.

VITA’S TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS

BIOLOGIQUE RECHERCHE Biologique Recherche methodology is built upon the combination of pure, concentrated, raw ingredients, an aesthetic and clinical approach as well as rigorous and unique protocols. Each treatment starts with the Assessment Stage to personalise the requirements of each individual, then the Initialisation Stage will prepare the epidermis for the Treatment Stage. The clinical treatment programs consist of several stages during which you are pampered and in her expert hands. RATIONALE

range is defined by the Essential Six Collections, crafted around the six facets of skin luminosity: Resilience, Vitality, Brilliance, Integrity, Clarity and Renewal. Every RATIONALE Ritual is built upon these six facets and is tailored to each client’s unique skin needs. VITA’S SKIN PROTECTION TIPS Protecting your skin from the sun year-round works two-fold, with measures taken to protect the appearance of your skin also contributing to its overall health. “Many of the principles I share with clients in relation to managing their skin also contribute towards avoiding the damaging effects of the sun,” Vita said. “A lot of this advice has been drilled into us as Australians from a young age, given the environment we live in and the harsh nature of the sun. They’re measures that are so important to follow, and it’s something I’m extremely passionate about having lost my younger brother to melanoma nearly ten years ago.” Protection Do your best to avoid direct sunlight for extended periods. Tried and true solutions to protection are: sunscreen, hats, protective clothing and an umbrella or natural shade if you’re outside. Timing Remember, the sun is at its most damaging between 11am - 3pm. So, pick the right time to spend time outdoors.

Since 1992, RATIONALE has delivered Luminous Skin for Life with a luxurious suite of formulations and treatment experiences that enlighten and transform.

SUMMER FASHION FORECAST

SEGUE FROM ISO-STYLE TO IN-STYLE

UKIYO-CO Photographer: Emily Ashley Turner

When the pandemic hit, we pivoted from tailored pants to trackies and swapped stilettos for socks. Now that life is starting to return to normal, it’s time to take the lounge out of loungewear and put fashion back on the agenda. Summer on the Coast is all sun, sand, surf and sundowners, and offers the perfect segue from iso-style to in vogue summer threads.

pair perfectly with soft Ukiyo-Co tracksuits, pants, shorts, kimonos and dresses.

According to Central Coast designer Weave Dibden Neck, who has spent the past few months in Avoca preparing the perfect collection for postpandemic life, the buzzwords this summer are natural, comfortable and multifunctional.

The new collection, which was shot at stunning locations around the Coast, including Avoca lake, a Copacabana beach house and a tropical Killcare garden, can be found in local stores (stockist list available on website) and the online store at ukiyo-co.com.

Her latest ‘lifestyle’ collection for her Ukiyo-Co brand features breathable cotton and bamboo fabrics in loose-fitting yet elegant styles which easily transition from beach to bar and resort to restaurant.

Yasmin Starkey, who owns one of the Coast’s most beautiful boutiques, Frankie Lifestyle, says comfort is key after 2020 kept most of us isolated from the world.

In line with the back-to-basics ethos and slower pace of 2020, there are chic dresses that can be dressed up or down, white linen pants for every occasion, cute balconettes and crops, a wasabi-coloured bamboo bodysuit, casual cotton jackets, flowy skirts, beautiful Indian blockprinted shirts and a fabulous fluoro pinstripe white cotton suit, which is the must-have item for the modern woman this season.

She has stocked her Norah Head boutique with relaxed and casual outfit styles such as Assembly Label basics and the must-have shoes of summer - chunky sandals, which are replacing white sneakers as the shoes du jour under flowy dresses and skirts.

The summer collection also includes yoga-swim pieces, taking active wear to a new multifunctional level and combining two of the key ingredients of a balanced coastal lifestyle: yoga followed by a beach swim.

As restrictions ease and we frock up for summer fun, ‘tis the season for day dresses and Yasmin says anything with puff-sleeves is on-trend. Shop online at frankielifestyle.com.au or head in store for the latest in summer fashion trends.

The Vita Recycled lycra pieces, which come in shorts, briefs, crop tops and bodysuits, and were modelled by “it” girl Madeline Holtznagel, 20

After matching tracksuits proved popular during the pandemic, Yasmin says sets are ‘in’ this season, with plenty of outfit options in light linens.

Country & coastal day trips

NSW’s Central Coast is rapidly turning into a fashionable and popular destination. While locals have known about the many hidden gems on the Central Coast for years, visitors to the area may be pleasantly surprised. Located within easy reach for day trips from Sydney, the Central Coast offers some beautiful country and coastal day trip options.

Here Megan and Andrew Atkins, long-time Central Coast locals and owners of Audi Alto in Gosford, share some of their favourite scenic drives in the Central Coast, NSW, taking in the countryside and the coastline in the best possible way.

A COUNTRY DRIVE If beautiful scenery is something you appreciate, you’ll love this stunning route. This scenic journey takes in a 66km stretch of road, with about an hour’s drive time – but it makes an ideal day trip, as there are plenty of experiences to be had along the way. FIRST STOP: SOMERSBY Starting on Wisemans Ferry Road, head towards Somersby Falls, a beautiful National Park area where you will find yourself surrounded by lush rainforest and waterfalls. This is the ideal spot for a picnic – we recommend stopping next to Floods Creek for some truly stunning scenery. A visit to Somersby would not be complete without calling in at the Australian Reptile Park. This is one of the Central Coast’s best-known attractions and a firm favourite with families and animal lovers of all ages! Located on the Pacific Highway, the park is home to Australian animals and reptiles from around the world. You can enjoy behindthe-scenes tours and exhibitions, and learn about the important conservation work being carried out here.

If by this time you’re thinking about food, there are a number of options here to suit your tastes. The Springs on Peats Ridge Road is an upmarket venue where you can enjoy lunch and a cocktail before taking in a round of golf if you’re feeling active. Or, if you prefer a more rustic ambience, call into The Harvest Kitchen for a coffee and a delicious slice of cake.

Those wanting more activity and adventure should head south on Peats Ridge Road to Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures. A popular destination for celebrity families including the Beckhams, this delightful venue gives you the opportunity to enjoy horse riding and quad biking, as well as a glamping experience if you want an overnight stay. SECOND STOP: PEATS RIDGE Heading north on Wisemans Ferry Road, take the left turn onto Peats Ridge Road. This route takes you past the Kulnura orchards, where you can stop for fresh fruit at the side of the road. Alternatively, if you would like to spend more time in this beautiful part of the world, you can take

A COASTAL DRIVE 28km might not sound like a long or satisfying drive, but it can be when you’re on the Central Coast! This beautiful coastal route is packed with attractions to visit and things to do. FIRST STOP: PATONGA Set out early and head to the south end of Patonga Drive, where you can enjoy a wonderful drive through bushland to reach The Patonga Boathouse. Overlooking the beach, this restaurant does a delicious breakfast, ideal to set yourself up for a day’s exploring. This also puts you in the perfect location for a section of the Great North Walk that runs for 3km from Patonga Beach to Pearl Beach. Even if you don’t complete the whole route, you can enjoy some stunning views along the way. SECOND STOP: UMINA BEACH If you’re feeling in the mood for some water-based activity, head back along Patonga Drive in the direction you came. This will take you onto Mount Ettalong Road, leading to lovely Umina Beach, where you can enjoy some first-rate surfing and paddleboarding with Mana SUP.

If you follow the old Pacific Highway south, this will eventually lead you to Saddles at Mt White. Recently voted one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world by Conde Nast, the afternoon tea here is rapidly becoming legendary. On the way here, you can also pay a visit to Walkabout Wildlife Park at Calga, a quintessentially Australian experience where you can come face to face with a wide variety of native animals in a bush setting. This is a great day out for families, and the park also offers overnight stays. A great place to end a rewarding day.

Following this, you will probably have worked up an appetite! We recommend following the coastline north until you join The Esplanade at Ettalong Beach. Here you will find The Box On The Water, the ideal place to stop for a drink and a bite to eat. THIRD STOP: KILLCARE AND BOUDDI NATIONAL PARK If you drive over Rip Bridge, this will bring you to Killcare and into Bouddi National Park. If you haven’t already eaten, take advantage of a long lunch at Bells, Killcare. This famous restaurant is run by celebrity chef Sean Connolly, and the Sunday feast here is legendary! Bouddi National Park coastal walk offers a wealth of natural beauty to enjoy. Start at Putty Beach and follow the Bouddi Coastal Walk if you want to see the ocean views to best advantage. Even if you don’t complete the walk, you will be met by stunning seascapes at every turn. To complete the day, what could be better than enjoying a few cocktails as the sun goes down? The Lucky Bee is the ideal spot for dinner and drinks as you watch the setting sun. The perfect ending to a perfect day on the Central Coast.

TOP TALENT IN TERRIGAL

JOHNNY MANUEL

With incredible vocals, showcased on the 2020 season of The Voice, Terrigal talent Johnny Manuel talks to us about what’s next for him.

It is not often that an international superstar decides to put down roots on the Central Coast, so when American singer and Terrigal resident Johnny Manuel made his debut on The Voice earlier this year, locals got quite excited. Tipped to take out the top rating talent show thanks to his amazing performance of Celine Dion’s famous track ‘My Heart Will Go On’, Johnny’s runner up placing behind Guy Sebastian’s brother Chris left many viewers shocked and disappointed. But the incredible crooner is still managing to live his dream, right here in our beautiful coastal region. Since filming, Johnny has been busy writing original songs, performing around the Central Coast and Sydney, and he even got to enjoy COVID-19 lockdown as a permanent Terrigal resident. Central Coast Life & Style were lucky enough to receive a private performance from Johnny at our launch event in October and the team were blown away by the sheer depth of Johnny’s range. His talent is everything that you saw on The Voice, and more.

Johnny Manuel photographed at Terrigal Haven with the AUDI A4 45 2.0L TFSI Quattro S 26

“Through David, I continued to meet people and travelled all over the world for music. I eventually did America’s Got Talent in 2017 and my audition video went viral, so after that things really started to pick up. “One of the people I met living in LA was Hugh Sheridan, an actor here in Australia. We became really good friends and he has a band called the California Crooners Club. He would invite me every year to come to Australia and tour with him – we’d go to Perth, Melbourne, Sydney. So I was here two and a half years ago and went to a restaurant in Coogee, started a conversation with someone, and now we’re in a long term relationship and living together.” Johnny’s partner grew up on the Central Coast, hence after living in Sydney together, then London, they decided to move back to the Central Coast at the start of 2020. And what a smart move and bonus for us locals. “I’ve had so much support from local residents. I’ll go to Erina Fair or the gym and people say that they thought I should have won The Voice,” he laughs

Performing three songs, including ‘Say It’ (his original single recorded during his time on The Voice) and an original track written from his Terrigal apartment, Johnny demonstrated he has a true gift and passion for music, which comes across in his emotional performances.

“The show kept me really busy at the start of the year but now I’m getting to explore more of the coast, which is great. I love walking down to Terrigal, going to the beach and grabbing brekky. I think it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.”

Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, a small city just outside Detroit in the USA, as a kid Johnny couldn’t be pulled away from the radio, obsessed with mimicking every note he heard. His parents soon realised that Johnny had a very special gift, so to further the development of his voice they encouraged him to join the church choir. By the age of ten he had recorded his first demo; a cover of Run DMC’s ‘It’s Like That’ and by the age of 14 he had a recording contract with Warner Records.

“It is such a great location because you’re close enough to travel to Sydney and then retreat home to the peacefulness of the coast at the end of the day,” he said.

“I toured at the time with big ‘back in the day’ pop acts like NSync and Jessica Simpson,” Johnny told Central Coast Life & Style. “After that I continued singing, went to New York for a few years. Then at 17, I was introduced to David Foster who produced some big hits like ‘My Heart Will Go On’ and a bunch of songs by Whitney Houston.

Johnny mentioned that he has been visiting the area on and off for six years and was happy to now call it home.

Johnny has now written six songs from his apartment in Terrigal and has several shows on the agenda. He also hopes to work on a show at Laycock Theatre in Gosford. “I really want to see something big musically happen here on the Central Coast. I’ve got lots of new music lined up to launch throughout 2021 too.” he said. 27

Extravagance

ON THE HAWKESBURY

There are team-building exercises, and then there are team-building excursions. Hiring a private boat qualifies as the latter. Central Coast Life & Style’s team recently experienced the luxury side of promoting team spirit with a unique expedition aboard the M.V. Zephyr. A beautiful old gal, this bareboat charter offers up one of the most exceptional boutique charter boat experiences on the Pittwater.

BOUTIQUE WEDDINGS | BIRTHDAYS | TOURS | PARTIES | PHOTOSHOOTS | DINING CRUISES

One of the most unique and boutique charter boats operating in Pittwater. A beautiful 1965 classic timber cruiser with a modern and stylish touch. We can fit up to 30 people for a cocktail / canapé style event or 14 people for a sit down lunch style event. Let’s Cruise.

Central Coast & Style’s team boarded the charter boat on the Central Coast side of the Hawkesbury River. They enjoyed the sights and sounds of the river while indulging in some canapes. The team sailed around to the Cottage Point Inn for lunch, where they had the option of an a la carte meal or a seven-course tasting menu with vegetarian options available. The event was a huge hit. Small boats for hire are not just ideal for teambuilding events – they are also a great way to celebrate a special occasion with friends, family, colleagues, or business associates. A stylish option to the usual sit-down dinner meeting, cruising the river while snacking on canapés is the perfect opportunity to connect. Whether it is with friends and family members or a prospective client, a trip down the Hawkesbury River on a luxury yacht for hire is a grand way to make a big impression. FROM REQUESTS TO BORROW TO A BRILLIANT IDEA M.V. Zephyr is owned and operated by Marcel Dupont-Louis. After years of having friends and family members constantly asking him to borrow his personal boat, Dupont-Louis came up with a brilliant idea. He quickly determined there was a market for a private boat hire in Pittwater and then set out to open his own boat for hire business. In 2019, he purchased a fishing trawler and transformed it into the magnificence that is the M.V. Zephyr. Add in a stylist to decorate the boat, a caterer, and a cocktail maker and voila – it is the perfect recipe for a luxury outing for any occasion!

PLANNING A PRIVATE BOAT HIRE TO SAIL THE CENTRAL COAST Hiring out the M.V. Zephyr is not a luxury exclusive to Central Coasters. The same trip is available from Newport on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where the M.V. Zephyr is based. Sydneysiders have the option of accessing this same day trip by picking up the boat from Newport on the Northern Beaches. When planning a private boat hire for the M.V. Zephyr, it is important to keep the following features in mind: • The M.V. Zephyr comfortably seats up to 30 passengers. • Guests enjoy a single flat entertaining area during their cruise. • A surround-sound system brings music and other presentations to life. • The below-deck lounge room is a great place to enjoy a cocktail or canapés. Zephyr Charters catering options are available to guests who hire out the M.V. Zephyr for the day. From the grazing table to the long lunch sitdown four-course menu, there is an option to suit every taste and budget. Onboard catering is provided by Rukus Café. Cruisers are offered the option of docking at the Cottage Point Inn to enjoy a delectable offboard meal. The inn previously served as a boathouse, a general store, and a post office for the river community before transforming into a pleasant bistro inn. Current owners Shane and Ally Olesen have continued the tradition at Cottage Point Inn, turning it into a fine-dining establishment for in-the-know boaties and Sydneysiders. The inn is open for both lunch and dinner. For more information or to plan your own fabulous day trip visit: ZephyrCharters.com.au CottagePointInn.com.au 29

SUMMER HAIR

with flair

With temperatures soaring into the 40s and the Central Coast a haven for beach lovers, we share some hair care tips for summer.

For starters, you can get your hair ready by adopting a summer hair care routine, getting rid of dry, damaged strands and opting for a fun but simple, low-maintenance look. This means scaling down the styling (minimise using heat tools, please!) and going for loose romantic braids, casual updos and carefree beach-babe waves. Limit your styling products to protective hairsprays and hair-illuminating products so as not to weigh it down whilst giving it essential care. Once a week, at night, let your hair soak up the nutrients of a nourishing mask to keep your hair healthy and beautiful inside-out. GET THE BEACH LOOK For styling inspiration, master these beach beauty looks a la Jennifer Hawkins, Elle Ferguson and Jemma Rix. Jennifer Hawkins, model Jennifer Hawkins’ swirl of blonde hair has always been the envy of many, coming up as one of the most requested colours in Australia’s hairdressing salons. A Newcastle native, former Miss Universe and an international model, the blonde bombshell wears her golden locks effortlessly – ready for the beach or a fancy party.

NATURAL SOLUTIONS FOR HAIR CARE IN HOT WEATHER

TERRIGAL

Keeping things natural is key to vibrant, nourished and healthy summer hair – and there are lots of great options out there. Protect the ends of your hair from sun damage by keeping the delicate ends hidden inside a casual bun or pinned under a loose French braid. Hide your hair from the harsh rays of the sun by wearing cool, funky or stylish hats, scarves, bandannas or patterned headbands.

From humble beginnings, Arc. Est Terrigal has transformed into one of Terrigal’s most sought-after dining hot spots.

Take a break from heat styling and go for natural beach waves to avoid overdrying your tresses. Keep your hair moisturised, smooth and colourprotected with an anti-UV protective nourishing treatment. Apply a UV hair protector that also works to un-frizz hair or spritz on a mixture of sunscreen diluted in water before heading out. DIY AT-HOME HAIR HACKS Don’t you just love it when everything you need to keep your hair gorgeous is just waiting there in your pantry? Here’s how to take care of your hair in summer, DIY style: For flakiness, use a pre-shampoo hair wash made of apple cider vinegar, water and tea tree oil.

Elle Ferguson, beauty products The epitome of understated glamour and power, self-made beauty entrepreneur and influencer Elle Ferguson is the brain behind the vegan Elle Effect sunless self-tanning products. Hailing from the Central Coast, Elle usually sports the beach girl aesthetic with her long, beachy blonde locks delicately framing her face.

To add shine and softness to dry hair, mix together coconut oil, honey, and apple cider vinegar and then apply.

Jemma Rix, actress Starring as Elsa in December in the Australian production of ‘Frozen’, Jemma Rix is a natural redhead who usually wears her gorgeous tresses loose or held up in a casual ponytail. A successful actress, singer and theatre performer, Jemma grew up in Avoca Beach, on the NSW Central Coast. It’s no wonder she always looks beach-ready, whether she’s playing a witch, the girlfriend of a ghost or an Argentinian head of state.

Add some flair to your hair with a bandanna. It’ll not only look good on you but also protect your hair from sun exposure. Then layer on something sheer. Whether it’s lace, cotton or some other light and breezy fabric, you’re sure to feel a million dollars in these summer-friendly materials.

MUST-HAVE FASHION ACCESSORIES We asked Stephanie from La Boheme to give us some styling tips to match with our summer hair and beach days. Stephanie suggested upping the ante of your summer look with these must-have styling accessories: Be effortlessly femme with a skirt or long flowing kaftan or lightweight summer dress. Just put it on over your bikini set or any kind of swimwear, and you’re ready to strut your stuff beachside.

Layer on some gold. Whether it’s chunky, statement or delicate golden chains, or ornate earrings, don’t be afraid to pile on some bling to add some sizzle to your summer getup. GET SUMMER-READY Looking and feeling like a beach babe doesn’t need a lot of styling and planning. Just check out these tips as you prep your hair and yourself for a fun Central Coast summer.

Appearing on the scene in 2020, Arc. Est Terrigal started as a homewares and coffee shop that offered home meals to locals in lockdown. But as restrictions lifted, the ‘Byron meets Bali’ bistro style restaurant has flourished, becoming a household name due to its unique style and service that sets it apart as something totally different for Terrigal. Owned by hospitality veterans Ruth and Scott Macfadyen, who also run Terrigal’s beloved Chop n Grind burger joint up the street, the couple update the Arc menu in a subtle way every few weeks. With changes generally reflecting market availability for produce, as well as quality, that is coming in. Fresh seafood is a highlight, for example a new cold plate that features a vibrantly fresh beetroot cured salmon, potted smoked trout, king prawns, marinated octopus, seared tuna and natural oysters. Ruth and Scott’s aim was to create bistro style dining – not quite fine dining, but high quality food, and they have certainly hit the nail on the head. It comes as no surprise considering that the pair have run a range of restaurants and cafés on the NSW Central Coast and in Sydney, with Scott working as head chef at multiple chef hatted restaurants throughout his career. When Harrison’s closed down last year, the couple jumped at the opportunity to buy on the corner of Church and Campbell, a location they had always been interested in. “The venue needed a renovation – we wanted something simple, not too fussy and laid back,” Ruth said.

Some of their most popular menu items at Arc include a 100 day grain fed sirloin or prawns wrapped in crispy noodles. Both have stayed on the menu, with some subtle changes. On the dinner menu, there are two and three courses available. Carpaccio was recently added as an alternative to the very popular beetroot carpaccio and a yellowfin tataki tuna with gazpacho salsa (to the entrée) along with the option to add the cold seafood plate (to the mains). The zucchini flowers are popular, as well as the slow roasted pork belly and the oysters are a must for any seating. Desserts are fabulous and made in house. It is too difficult to pick a favourite, but the Chocolate mousse with salted caramel meringue is a decadence that should not be missed. Ruth is very much involved with the wine list, ensuring there is a large selection of varieties. She pursues labels that are not widely stocked such as their Epsilon Shiraz (also pouring by the glass) as a value drop. Another popular red is the Salomon Finniss Cabernet Sauvignon which is by the bottle. The popular white at the moment is the Jim Barry Assyrtiko, which is available by the glass and the Kooyong Estate Chardonnay which is by the bottle. They also have a wonderful Trial Batch Nebbiolo Rose from Pyrenees, which is available by the glass and very popular.

Built TO INSPIRE It doesn’t get much more exciting than renovating homes with potential in stunning NSW Central Coast locations. Renovating and home styling is a real obsession for so many Australians. We love watching an old outdated home transform into something special on shows like The Block. Well, we have our own home transformation team right here on the NSW Central Coast. Today, local businessman, Michael Baker and his team from Built to Inspire take us through a property makeover they’ve been focused on recently that helped blend a unique home into its bush setting, in Killcare.

700 THE SCENIC RD, MACMASTERS BEACH

Killcare’s Built to Inspire team are a local family-run business who specialise in high quality home and retail building solutions. Working alongside many prestige architects, Michael and his team are exceptionally skilled in ensuring a building, whether it’s a home or shop, has a connection with its surrounding and draws attention from the street.

Set just five minutes from Macmasters Beach and offering ocean views from the ridge line of the property, this is 35 acres of absolute heaven. Packed with potential, the property has DA approval for a four-part subdivision of 2.5 acres each. The property includes two comfortable dwellings along with generous paddocks, established orchards and extra-wide street frontage. This is a prime parcel that offers unlimited opportunity, less than 90 mins from Sydney’s CBD (STCA). Contact Baraka Leporte on 0459 996 464

Transforming tired houses located in lifestyle suburbs like Killcare and Copacabana, the team focuses on opening up spaces, expanding and adding value to a home while creating something unique and beautiful. Owner Michael Baker said that he gets a buzz producing something new and different for his clients. “I love working with a building’s structural potential. We’re able to change the look of a house completely and give it a high end feel, through some well considered structural or visual changes. Building in a coastal environment, homes here have their own character and our carpenters gain immense satisfaction using hardwood timbers, to give a home that natural finish,” he said.

An exciting example is a recent upgrade to a Killcare beach house where the Built to Inspire team gave the façade and roof of the building a complete overhaul. The house was initially designed by a Sydney architect as a natural tree house to blend into the bush. The original owner created a contemporary holiday house using a combination of reclaimed floors, custom built cabinetry and an array of natural materials that give the illusion of living outdoors. The house’s generous open plan living was designed to capture the ocean glimpses and breezes, whilst providing a wonderful extension to living space with the generous deck. Built to Inspire were hired to transform the exterior, and uplift an iconic holiday home so that it better complemented the stunning bushland environment within which the home resides. Renovated with vertical blackbutt cladding, the house on Grandview Crescent now appears at one with its surroundings. Using natural looking timber battens on the outside and a brand new flat pan and high rib roof in woodland grey, the result is an eye catching home that stands out from the norm. “This is not your standard roof and what we have achieved really changes the look of the property. It’s the first thing you see when you walk down to the house, and it’s the start of a journey into a unique home that provides tranquility and calm to anyone that stays here,” Mr Baker said. “The clients love it and while it’s currently a weekender for the owners, they plan to eventually make Killcare their permanent address.” Another of Mr Baker’s recent projects includes a new shop fit out for Bouffant in Terrigal, a French inspired patisserie that serves delicious baked goods, such as croissants, donuts, tarts and danishes to enjoy with a perfectly brewed coffee.

‘OSKARS’ AT 21 THE SCENIC RD, KILLCARE HEIGHTS The inspirational Oskars at Killcare Heights will soon hit the market with Belle Property Central Coast. A property like none other in the area, the Tuscan style estate has an iconic history as the original home of adventurer Oskar Speck. It includes breathtaking 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean and Brisbane Waters and an infinity pool. 34

The retail store fit out has unique external features like aluminium bronze finishes, curved joinery and internal stone benches that, again, aim to be eye catching and draw people’s attention from the street into the store. “These projects require creative thinking and structural building expertise, but the result and value derived in terms of making your home or retail store stand out and have a key point of difference is something well worth considering,” Michael said. CENTRAL COAST ACTIVITIES

through summer If you are looking for things to do on the NSW Central Coast over the summer months, we have you covered. Whilst beaches are a main draw for the Central Coast, they are not the only highlight. Locals and tourists alike can enjoy some of the other activities happening in the area. The sunniest time of the year is perfect for outdoor activities and events. From biking and hiking to taking in the local culture, there is no shortage of activities to keep you occupied. We’ve hand-picked some of the best places to shop, get your culture fix or enjoy the outdoor lifestyle for which the Central Coast is renowned. Some events may be off-limits and the information here may be out of date due to COVID-19 restrictions, so confirm details with event organisers before attending.

Summer Markets

THE AVOCA BEACHSIDE MARKETS are one of the highlights of living on the Central Coast. Located on Avoca Beach, the market operates on the fourth Sunday of every month with slight variations over the school holidays.

Physical Activities It’s ‘the great outdoors’ that drew many of us to the beautiful Central Coast. Of course, the beaches and the NSW coastal lifestyle are the main attraction but there’s much more to this beautiful region. GLENWORTH VALLEY OUTDOOR ADVENTURES offers guests a full day of activities, from horse riding, quad biking and abseiling to laser skirmish. Camping and other accommodations are available, so visitors can take their time trying out all the fun outdoor adventures at Glenworth Valley. Visit: glenworth.com.au A tandem flight with CC PARAGLIDING could be your introduction to this thrilling experience, with tandem flights from $185. Devotees of flying this way call it one of the purest forms of human flight. So if you’ve always fancied yourself soaring through the air with an eagle’s perspective of the land, this is your chance. Visit: ccparagliding.com.au Closer to the ground, summer is an ideal time to learn to surf (mainly because generally the surf isn’t as heavy over summer so busting out through the breakers won’t break you). Popular surfing schools include Pines Surfing Academy at Shelly Beach and the Central Coast Surf School that operates mainly in the Avoca, Terrigal and Umina areas. PINES SURFING ACADEMY (owned and operated by Tamati Tapara, a former elite competitive surfer) is geared towards kids, is ASI accredited and also accredited to work with NDIS recipients and disadvantaged youth. Visit: visitcentralcoast.com.au/things-to-do and www.psacentralcoast.com The CENTRAL COAST SURF SCHOOL has a range of lesson configurations and prices, from $50 per person in a group lesson to $100 for a private one-hour surf lesson. The kids aren’t forgotten, either, with school holiday courses available over the summer. Board and wetsuit hire included in the price. Visit: centralcoastsurfschool.com.au

Due to the pandemic, the number of vendors is limited this year, but it is still worthwhile if you enjoy bespoke items and a selection of food and beverages. Follow The Avoca Beachside Markets Facebook page for more information about this and other events throughout the summer. Visit facebook.com/AvocaBeachsideMarkets

At the Copa,

Copacabana...

It is almost impossible to mention Copacabana Beach on the Central Coast without the Barry Manilow song of the same name popping into your head. After all, it is a catchy tune.

Although the two share a name, that is where the similarity ends. Manilow’s song was not inspired by the famous NSW beach, but rather a popular beachside hotel in Rio de Janeiro. There is far more to this fantastic little beach town than the words of that famous song. With everything centred around the seafront, there are plenty of things to do in Copacabana on the NSW Central Coast. CATCHING SOME WAVES We would be remiss if we did not recommend catching a wave or two whilst visiting the sandy beaches and crystal blue waters of Copacabana Beach. Pro surfer Matt Wilkinson grew up surfing here, and the beach is popular for good reason. Located away from the noise and traffic of populated towns, it is considered one of the most relaxing holiday spots on the Central Coast. Some of the best swells are found at the northern point of the bay. VIP APPEAL Barry Manilow may not have had our Copacabana in mind when he penned his famous song, but that does not mean we are without VIP appeal. Country music fans will recognise Kasey Chambers who has been one of our local residents since 2018. Originally from Mount Gambier, Kasey is yet another musician who’s chosen to allow the beauty of the NSW Central Coast to inspire her creatively. See her at the Byron Bay Bluesfest in the first week of April 2021. TAKING IN A SHOW After a long day of hiking or surfing, relax and take in a quality film at the nearby Avoca Beach Picture Theatre. Family-owned and operated, the theatre brings a diverse range of top-notch entertainment to discerning viewers. WATCHING THE WHALES Another popular activity at Copacabana Beach is whale watching. Whales migrate along the NSW coastline between May and November, making it an ideal time to catch them in action. For those interested in seeing the whales and other coastal views, Captain Cook Lookout is one of the best places to do so. Located just 20 minutes from Gosford, the lookout affords breathtaking views that can extend from North Head to the Sydney CBD.

BURNT HONEY BAKERY This trendy beachfront bakery, Burnt Honey Bakery, is so popular with locals and tourists that it is not uncommon to find queues out the door. Burnt Honey Bakery ethically sources and serves an amazing selection of coffees, pastries, and foods. Owners Hayley Thorncraft and Joanna Fairall are committed to community, using local suppliers when possible and creating a laid-back atmosphere for gatherings with friends. From the café’s signature cassina bark and lemon zest custard tarts to some of the flakiest croissants outside of France, the offerings won’t disappoint patrons. Stop by to enjoy a café and snack whilst taking in some of the most spectacular coastal views.

HOW TO STAY

FORGET TEQUILA SHOTS, HOW ABOUT SOME VITALITY?

y h t l a e h l l e d w n a

If you’ve spent a bit too much time at the pub this year, you won’t need to be told that alcohol is a real menace when it comes to feeling healthy. Ready to take a bit of a step away from the booze bloat and find some new energy? How about switching the tequila for a healthy tonic shot? Modern Organic at Long Jetty have teamed up with Naturopath Scott Collins from Grasses of Life to create ‘Vitality shots’, with the menu using Scott’s concentrated superfood elixirs. There are four types of shots, and they are all packed full of the good stuff. The Rehydration is made from Australian black sea minerals, sea salt and orange extract topped with coconut water. The drink is a complete source of natural electrolytes and is perfect after working up a sweat in a hot yoga class or after a big night out.

OVER SUMMER After a tough year, now is the right time to shift the focus back to health. Some of the coast’s top health gurus are offering advice on how to stay physically and spiritually well over the summer, with some fun ideas thrown into the mix.

The year 2020 has really shown us who’s boss, hasn’t it? No matter how hard we might try to control our individual worlds, we just don’t get to decide on how everything pans out. For many of us, health and wellbeing were shifted to the back seat. The struggle is incredibly understandable but, as the famous Thomas Jefferson quote suggests, ‘without health, there is no happiness’. So with plenty of warm days left to inspire a reset, perhaps now is the time to make a change? Central Coast Life & Style teamed up with some inspiring local businesses to suggest some fun ways to stay healthy this summer.

Central Coast health gurus Scott Madden and Elle Nielsen know all about how good being fit and healthy feels.

“You’ll have energy to do more and feel healthy and happy as opposed to tired and lethargic. It is just mood boosting,” she remarked.

The Central Coast-based pair started a smoothie bowl business called Bowlarama in 2019 and also run a gym called Body Movement, with both businesses next door to each other in Kincumber. Their mission is simple

Bowlarama launched their Kincumber store in June 2019, Long Jetty in November 2019 and are due to launch in Terrigal in December 2020. Follow on Instagram: bowlarama_bowls

The Fire Bowl is made with dragonfruit, mango, raspberries and coconut milk. Their most popular is the Ocean Bowl, a tropical blend of fruits with blue spirulina. Elle commented it was important to stay healthy over summer because when you look after your mind and body, you feel lighter and happier.

Built and owned by local couple Kiran and Kirt Mallie, the café is tucked away from the main road in an aptly named Zen garden, where flavourful and creative food will leave your taste buds dancing. 1. GET MOVING! The best way to keep active over the summer period is by exploring the local area (if you’re away on holidays or kicking back at home over the break) and walking! Finding national parks, bushwalks and waterfalls off the beaten track always makes you feel alive. 2. START YOUR DAY RIGHT Setting your day up for success starts with what you do first. We love getting up early, walking to our local coffee shop and nourishing our bodies with a fresh and healthy breakfast. Plus, you can’t go past the sweetness and juiciness of those summer fruits. It’s always a great idea to hit the gym first thing in the morning before it gets too hot, and you get too tired after being in the sun all day! 3. MAKE YOUR FRIDGE COLOURFUL AND VIBRANT Stock up on all the fresh fruit and veggies so you always have something nourishing to grab. There are also so many amazing health-food cafés and kiosks popping up all the time as we become a more health-conscious society, so do your research and check out what’s available in your local area. 4. STAY HYDRATED AND PROTECTED As the weather heats up, it is even more important to ensure you are drinking enough water to keep your energy up. We are very conscious of wearing sunscreen every day, packing a hat, sunnies and beach umbrella for outdoor adventures, and get regular check-ups at the skin cancer clinic. 5. HAVE FUN! Relax, kick back and make activities part of your summer plan. There are so many ways to remain active outside of the gym, such as taking a frisbee or ball to the beach, surfing, swimming and adventuring to somewhere we have never been before.

Holidaying WITH PETS

Want to escape to the NSW Central Coast, but worried about leaving your furry friend behind? There are plenty of pedigree options for pets. It’s official, Australians are obsessed with their pets. Around 65 per cent of Aussie households have a pet. 2020 saw a sharp increase in pet ownership with our canine friend by far the most popular at almost 72 per cent. As employees grow accustomed to working from home, having a little companion by our sides has become more and more appealing. After all, playing with pets helps increase our feel good chemicals, namely dopamine, that boosts happiness in our brains. So no wonder dogs (as adorable as they are) have been so highly sought after in recent times. Whilst many of us were tethered to our local suburb, animal shelters and breeders reported a huge spike in demand for dogs and cats, as people who had put off adding a pet to their household made animal rescue or adoption a reality. This summer many Sydneysiders will be looking to venture out of the city and the NSW Central Coast is a premier location with so much vacation variety on offer. Pet owners are on the hunt for pet friendly holiday destinations. So much so that entire websites and Facebook groups have appeared dedicated to the topic. Luckily for us, the NSW Central Coast offers plenty of pet friendly holiday options. Holiday house owners on the Central Coast are becoming more flexible, with many more allowing pets in their homes. Belle Escapes offer a number of properties in Killcare, Pretty Beach and Macmasters Beach that allow pets to stay too. So that’s an easy one, just find a fabulous holiday house that allows you to take the dog with you! Belle Escapes Central Coast properties that are pet-friendly include: Casa De Pueblo, Killcare Indys Beach House, Killcare Ocean Eyes, Macmasters Beach Pretty Beach Escape, Pretty Beach Salhia Beachhouse, Macmasters Beach Sunset Retreat, Killcare Simply visit www.belleescapes.com.au and plug in your dates and properties or call the Belle Escapes Central Coast booking team on (02) 4360 1717, who’ll help you find your perfect match. Alternatively, if pet-friendly accommodation is unavailable, or you just want a break from having to think of holiday activities that can include your pet, there is an animal care facility in Terrigal that is the creme de la creme – Pet Resorts, a state of the art pet hotel with features that could rival a five star ‘human resort’. 42

With a staff of friendly pet care professionals, cat lovers and qualified dog trainers it’s the purrrrrfect place to spoil your feline friend or pet pooch. The facility is set in a tranquil tropical surrounding with features such as a supervised lap pool, lagoon side walks, spacious courtyards for playtime and a day spa and dog groomer parlour on site. Sydney mum Melanie Hoole recently visited Terrigal with her kids and couldn’t believe it when she saw where her dog Ariel was staying. “It was like a Bali resort but for dogs, I was lost for words,” she said. Melanie and her family are particularly attached to Ariel, a staffy cross kelpie that was rescued last Christmas from Monika’s Rescue in Ingleside. “I initially felt really bad about leaving our dog somewhere unfamiliar to her while we holidayed with friends, but when I saw the facilities at Pet Resort, the guilt disappeared completely – I figured Ariel was going to be spoilt for fun with other doggy guests.” For supremely pampered pooches, a Royal Private Suite is on offer at Pet Resorts for dogs who require a room with their own TV, human-sized bed, and grass terrace. Can you believe that there is also a daily maid with linen service, in-room dining, aircon with heat and humidity control, a hydro bath and blowdry option, plus unlimited TLC and cuddles. Pet Resorts also offer a Pet Taxi to pick up and drop off your feline or canine pet from your home, holiday house or local vet, and there are even dedicated pet nannies available if you just need pet sitting service for a few hours. What more could you ask! To book, visit www.petresortsaustralia.com/pet-resorts-terrigal or call 02 4367 1200

Shady Palms CENTRAL COAST DINING SCENE GOES TROPPO

An Avoca restaurant that has housed two of the Coast’s most legendary dining experiences is embarking on its next exciting chapter as Shady Palms. The bar and restaurant occupying the leafy two-acre homestead at 366 Avoca Drive was a riot of colour as Rojo Rocket and then offered a contemporary slice of Italy as Bombini. Now, it’s been reimagined as Shady Palms. The restaurant is the latest Central Coast business from the team behind Mumbo Jumbos, and while there are still plenty of colourful cocktails inducing laidback island feels, Shady Palms emanates more of a vintage surf vibe than the Jamaican shack setting of its beachfront brother. As a born-and-bred Coastie, Shady Palms co-owner Justin Hyland said the site has been home to some of the Coast’s most memorable drinking and dining, and they weren’t going to let a pandemic get in the way of securing their turn at the property. “I grew up on the Coast and I’ve loved this location from Rojo through to Bombini. It’s such a great space and we really believed it was perfect for our next venture, regardless of the situation with COVID,” he said.

The menu has been designed to transport diners to an island paradise with fun and fresh flavours inspired by the Pacific. While the tacos, burgers and seafood might seem familiar to fans of Mumbos, there are also juicy steaks and woodfired pizzas on offer at Shady Palms. The tropical drinks couldn’t be more befitting of the tropical setting and, like the food, are designed to trigger relaxing holiday vibes the moment a cocktail arrives. From the everyday soundtrack to DJs and live music on the weekends, rest assured that the Palms is always pumping. Opening in time for summer, this new bar and restaurant located under Avoca’s ‘shady palms’ is the slice of paradise the Coast needs after 2020. For more information visit shadypalms.com.au

Already home to a beautiful old homestead with a wraparound verandah, an upstairs bar complete with pizza oven, acres of lush gardens and palm trees galore, the team behind the aptly named Shady Palms simply added some private al fresco pockets among the greenery and some shaded outdoor booths, making the most of the garden oasis. In line with the owners’ sustainability ethos, all the furniture is upcycled from the stools in the bar to the decking and tables made with timber from an old jetty. 43

Belle Escapes Central Coast offers a range of holiday homes in some of the region’s most scenic locations. Forresters FORRESTERS BEACH

HOLIDAY HOUSES ON OFFER: BLUE WATER

Known to locals simply as ‘Forries’, this ruggedly beautiful beach town is quickly emerging as one of the trendiest suburbs to holiday on the Central Coast.

This ultra-contemporary residence, designed and engineered by awardwinning architect Matt Thitchener, enjoys spectacular views stretching across Forresters Beach all the way to Terrigal.

Offering dramatic views from the cliff tops across Wyrrabalong National Park to the waters below, Forresters Beach is the quiet alternative to Terrigal, which is conveniently just ten minutes away.

With three glass-wrapped levels for living and entertaining, the home is finished with an array of premium-quality inclusions throughout including an integrated sound system, underfloor heating and decks on each level.

The reef breaks are popular with local and visiting surfers. The southern end of the beach is more protected (where people swim), and there are plenty of nearby walking trails for those who enjoy the great outdoors. There are some gorgeous local cafés, or jump in the car for five or ten minutes and you will find an array of venues in nearby Terrigal and Wamberal. Head north and visit the sleepy lighthouse town of Norah Head, the Munmorah State Recreation Area or head to The Entrance for some pelican feeding with the kids. With plenty of idyllic beach towns and nearby countryside to roam, Forresters Beach is the perfect midpoint for weekend getaways.

BLUE WATER

EXPLORE: Crackneck Lookout coastal walk Stretching north for about 1.5km, The Coast walking track offers some of the most breathtaking ocean views that the Central Coast has to offer. Arrive at Crackneck Lookout for a photo opportunity and spread out a rug on the grass or set up at one of the picnic tables. You’ll be surrounded by panoramic views of Shelly Beach, views that continue along the Central Coast past Norah Head, Tuggerah Lake and The Entrance. EAT: di Matteos café This Modern Australian restaurant and café has some strong Italian leanings, which means one thing – great coffee.

CASA BIANCA With enough space for families or large groups, this classic Hamptonsstyle home has been designed to capture beautiful ocean breezes. Set in a calm leafy setting, the location could not be better with views that look out towards an endless stretch of sparkling coastline. FABULOUS FICTION

MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE

Trent Dalton’s All Our Shimmering Skies is the book everyone will be talking about this summer. It’s the follow up to Dalton’s award-winning debut novel, Boy Swallows Universe, and from what the critics are saying, this magical story (set against the backdrop of Darwin during WW2) is set to be another Aussie classic.

Navy Seals are known for achieving the impossible and that’s exactly what David Goggins, author of Can’t Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds, is known for. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, Goggins does more than motivate and inspire in his book, he teaches readers to push aside fear, pain and doubts to reach their full potential.

The Vanishing Half was one of the most anticipated fiction books of the year. Author Brit Bennett delves into what happens when 16-yearold twin sisters run away from their Southern black town and end up going down different paths as adults which sees their lives separated into black and white communities.

Central Coast photographer Ken Duncan used his COVID time wisely, collating a beautiful new coffee table book devoted exclusively to wildlife. Best known for his colourful landscapes, this is his first wildlife book and the 168 fullcolour pages were 15 years in the making. Walking in the Wild features spectacular images of animals captured on every continent and is the escape into a world of wanderlust we all need this summer.

SUMMERTIME SELF-CARE

REAL-LIFE READS

Joy at Work: Organizing Your Professional Life is a NY Times bestseller that takes the KonMari Method into the office promising the kind of improvements in productivity that can only come with a tidy desk and mind.

As far as Hollywood bios go, 2020 was a year that saw Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey and Matthew McConaughey all release memoirs but it’s the latter who seems to be surprising audiences the most. McConaughey’s Greenlights shares candid and entertaining stories and insights from the actor’s life, including a few unexpected revelations.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson is a fire-starter for anyone looking to use the summer break to make some big life changes. Just as it sounds, this book is about figuring out what’s important and not worrying so much about what’s not.
