WHAT IS A FOUNDATION DEGREE?

WHAT IS An HND/HNC?

A foundation degree is a degree-level qualification which combines academic study with workplace learning. They are designed in association with employers and validated by local universities to help equip people with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to achieve academic results, as well as improve performance and productivity in the workplace.

HND stands for Higher National Diploma. It is awarded by Edexcel BTEC and is a two-year full-time programme of study. HNC stands for Higher National Certificate and modes of attendance can vary for this pathway. These can be full-time, part-time or evening courses. Please see the individual course listings for further details. The HND and HNC courses provide a pathway with the flexibility for you to study to meet your own specific needs. Qualifications are designed to provide students with the right balance between knowledge and work-related skills. In this way, you would gain real employment options at the end of only two years’ study, as well as opportunities to progress through Higher Education.

Foundation degrees focus on a particular job or profession and are intended to increase the professional and technical skills of current or potential staff within a profession, or to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to enter that profession. Sometimes the idea of a full honours degree can seem daunting: a foundation degree is the equivalent to the first two years of a full honours degree. It is a fully flexible qualification that allows you to study part-time or full-time to fit their lifestyle. Generally, if you are successful on your foundation degree, you will be able to progress on to the third year of a named degree at the validating university, although this can also depend on your academic performance.

2015/16 open Evenings The College encourages all potential students to visit, meet the staff and look at the facilities and resources that are available before you apply. Details of our Open Evenings can be found on our website. mature students Applications are welcome from mature students with relevant industrial or commercial experience and/or alternative qualifications and these will be considered on an individual basis. Equivalent and Lower Qualifications In 2008 the government withdrew funding to colleges and universities for the teaching of students on Higher Education courses which are at an equivalent or lower level than a qualification already held by a student. For example, if a student enrols on a HND and already holds a HND or degree the College will not receive government funding for that student. What this means is that if you plan to study for a qualification at the same level as one you already hold you may not be eligible for any Tuition Fee Loan, Maintenance Loan or grant. However, you would still be able to apply for extra support such as Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs), Parent’s Learning Allowance, Adult Dependents Grant and Childcare Grant. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Our Higher Education programmes are vocational and are usually equivalent to the first two years of a university degree course. At the end of the courses, students can choose to either go on to university for a further 1-2 years to convert their qualification to a degree, or to pursue their chosen career. Each of the courses will have its own specific entry requirements: please see the relevant page for details. You can find out if your qualifications are suitable by using the UK NARIC system to check their equivalence at: www.naric.org.uk.

For all courses you must provide evidence of your current English language level. This must be a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The most common SELT accepted for admission to courses at colleges and universities is the ‘IELTS Academic for UKVI’. Our minimum entry requirement is IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each of the four elements (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Applications for Higher Education courses can be made through the UCAS system, which you can access online at: www.ucas.co.uk. We also accept applications directly to the International Office. If you wish to apply directly you should complete an International Student Application Form (available to download from our website or from the International Office), and send it to us along with copies of your qualification certificates, school reports for the last 3 years (including English language qualifications), and a short personal statement detailing your reasons for studying your chosen course. Applications should be sent by email to: international@centralnottingham.ac.uk. The International Office will assist international students throughout the application process and to prepare for arrival at the College. NOTTINGHAM – A STUDENT CITY

Sports

Nottingham has all the facilities and entertainment a student needs – a vibrant city centre, one of the best shopping centres outside London, excellent sports facilities, a thriving arts and cultural scene and exciting nightlife. Easy to get to, Nottingham offers excellent transport links to other major cities in the UK and abroad.

Nottingham is a major sporting city and whether you are a player or spectator, there is plenty to keep you interested. Within two miles of the College are Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, Meadow Lane (the home of rivals Notts County) and Trent Bridge, the venue for County and Test Match cricket. National rugby union is played at Meadow Lane, while horse and dog racing enthusiasts can go to nearby Colwick Park. The National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont offers facilities for rowing, sailing, canoeing and water-skiing.

Nottingham is a student city, with two universities. More than one in ten of the 300,000 inhabitants are students and most of the city’s clubs, bars and restaurants hold regular student nights. Arts, Culture & Nightlife Nottingham has some of the best nightlife in the country with a number of live music venues, including Rock City and the Capital FM Arena, which attract top international bands and endless smaller venues where you can see up and coming artists. It also offers a diverse pub and club scene and hundreds of restaurants where you can sample food from around the world. There are five cinemas to choose from, including art houses and multi-screen complexes. There are two theatres featuring leading productions, from music and comedy tours to pantomimes. The Royal Concert Hall and the Capital FM Arena are major venues for rock, pop and classical, concerts. Galleries and museums provide an impressive programme of art and historical exhibitions. Many fine old buildings remain in the City and as a testament to the textile industry, the Lace Market area has been transformed into the City’s new Creative Quarter.

The National Ice Centre based in the city plays host to the Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey Club as well as public ice skating. You can also enjoy international tennis at the Nottingham Tennis Centre, one of the largest such facilities in Europe. As part of our partnership with Nottingham Trent University, all students on NTU-validated higher education courses are eligible to participate in university sport and to play for NTU in BUCS competitions. A Diverse Economy The diverse Nottinghamshire economy provides excellent career prospects, while the area’s small and medium-sized businesses possess potential for job creation. Nottingham has many hi-tech and internationally renowned companies including Boots, Capital One, E.ON and Experian. A high percentage of students stay on in the area after they finish their studies which has helped to boost local business.

If you are experiencing financial hardship and you need extra support, the College may be able to assist you through the Access to Learning Fund. You can apply if you are a full or part-time student. The College will look at your individual circumstances, but you may, for example, be able to get help for:

Course tutors and library staff have worked together to ensure that the most relevant and up-to-date books and journals are available to you from our College libraries. There should be the items on your reading lists as well as other titles to support the course.

Online Resources

Accommodation Nottingham has a wide selection of private self-catering accommodation, usually a furnished house or flat shared with other students. You can expect to pay a weekly rent of between £50-75 per week per person excluding bills. Additional Support for Students with Disabilities and/or Learning Difficulties Students, before entry and while on a course, can apply for the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs). This will enable them to access support for their additional needs. We can arrange specialist support tuition, communication support workers, note-takers etc. where the DSAs have been approved. Tuition Fees Our fees for full-time university-level courses were £5995 in the 2015/16 academic year. Please contact us for details of our full-time HE fees for 2016/17. sUPPORT FROM THE GOVERNMENT Students will be able to apply for a loan to cover the cost of their tuition and they will only start to pay this back once they are earning over £21,000. To offset the cost of tuition fees and living costs, non-repayable grants will be available for students who qualify. Non-repayable grants will be subject to means testing, based on household income. Information Technology The College believes that all students should be equipped with the computing skills they will need whatever their course of study. As well as the libraries and learning resources centres, you will find everything you need at College in terms of hardware, software and tutor support. Modern networked PC and Apple Mac suites ensure that, wherever you are based in the College, you can get online. You can also access many of the services and materials from your own computer at home. Access to the IT facilities, internet and email services are available to all students on completion of an induction training package. Library Services

Nottingham is a vibrant city for leisure and sporting activities and the College prides itself on its links and commitment to this growing and expanding environment. Open to all students, we offer Sport Academies in football, hockey and rugby attracting some of the best young athletes in the country. Other sports can be organised if individuals or groups express an interest. There are regular fixtures with other colleges in a range of sports and in particular local football leagues. There are also hairdressing and beauty therapy salons at the Beeston centre and on Wheeler Gate in the City Centre.

WHAT ARE HIGHER APPRENTICESHIPS?

The benefits for apprentices

An Apprenticeship is a way for you to earn while you learn in a real job, gaining a real qualification and a real future. Like Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships, Higher Apprenticeships combine a range of on and off-the-job training and take between one and four years to complete. Higher Apprenticeships are critical to the economy: they respond to employers’ higher level skill needs, support business growth, meet individuals’ career aspirations and enhance opportunities for social mobility by combining work and higher level study.

Higher apprenticeships allow young people and adults to earn while they learn at the highest level and progress into higher skilled occupations.

Access to Higher Education

Access to HE Programme

Access to HE Diploma programmes are designed for adults who may wish to return to education after a break. They provide a supportive academic programme that will prepare you for study in Higher Education or in developing a new career. The Access Diplomas are designed for people who wish to go to university but lack the usual qualifications, such as A Levels, BTECs and GCSEs.

Course Content Each pathway is made up of 60 credits at Level 3, with at least 36 credits being made up of core subjects. Credits are awarded pass, merit and distinction.

The specific academic, professional or vocational pathway appears in the title e.g. Access to HE Social Sciences or Access to HE Diploma Nursing & Midwifery. The Access to HE Diploma is accepted by universities as an appropriate entry qualification for most undergraduate courses. Many of our successful Access students have gone on to study degrees at local and national universities. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are now available for students aged 24 or over at the start of their course, studying at Level 3 or 4. Foundation degree in fine Art Course Content This multi-disciplinary Fine Art course embraces a full range of disciplines, allowing students to work in the materials and methods of their choice, including drawing, painting, printmaking, illustration, photography, installation, intervention, performance and digital technologies. You will develop your creativity through projects that stimulate, challenge and allow you time and space to develop your work. All our students have large individual purpose-built studio spaces in which to explore and create artwork. Workshops in Printmaking, Photography, Silkscreen, 3D, Drawing and Installation enable all students to explore materials and processes with encouragement and support from course tutors, who all are highly experienced educators and practising Fine Artists, with national reputations for excellence in their field. Alongside practical workshops and personal studio work, students will develop their own creative practices with an academic understanding of both historical and contemporary ideas and issues. There is also important focus upon how to survive as a practising artist or an arts-related worker in the 21st century. Business and entrepreneurial studies will include e-commerce, self-promotion, portfolio preparation, how to exhibit and be shown as an artist in traditional and non-traditional art spaces, how to organise exhibitions, applying for funding/grants and the law for visual artists. These aspects will be delivered in collaboration with external partners and guest speakers. All students will participate in a live group project, giving individuals a real world perspective on working with clients and on exhibiting.

The course will culminate in a final course exhibition showcasing studio practice. Foundation degree in Photography Practice Course Content This course aims to provide aspiring professional photographers an extended understanding of their medium and to prepare them for the demands of a rapidly changing industry. Emphasis is placed upon the development of a creative approach to image making, excellent technical skills, a professional attitude and good business practices i.e. the skills and knowledge to pursue commercial practice. The course has been designed in consultation with industry partners, as well as with Nottingham Trent University, our validating Higher Education institution. Learners have the opportunity to go on a number of trips, take part in live assignments and visit exhibitions. This year learners have visited Berlin and Edinburgh and the live assignments have included Attenborough Nature Reserve and Notts County. The course has great links with the professional industry and this is reflected in the quality of guest speakers that deliver sessions to the course. HNC/HND in Construction & the Built Environment

Construction is more than just making things – our Higher Education courses are designed for Construction Technicians and those working towards a professional career that have completed the National Certificate or Diploma in Construction or other approved Level 3 qualifications. The courses enable students to develop their expertise to meet the requirements at a higher technician level within the construction industry.

Course Content The course is based on a core curriculum that supports the specialist content for the construction pathway. The course develops learners’ knowledge, understanding, skills and awareness necessary to provide them with the potential to progress to technical, supervisory and managerial positions in construction, building services engineering and civil engineering.

Construction courses are delivered at our purpose built construction centre based at Beeston in Nottingham, which has been highly recommended by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The School of Technology offers a range of vocational qualifications at Higher Education level which complement its strong base and reputation at Further Education level. Based at the iconic Highfields Centre located at the Nottingham Science Park, students are able to study in our state-of-the-art engineering facilities.

Course Content The programme is ideal for students who have completed studies at an advanced level, or who have more varied experience and want to pursue a career in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering.

We are conscious that modern engineering training requires a flexible approach, which we can provide through part-time and full-time courses, allowing working professionals an opportunity to gain further qualifications. The Travel and Tourism department runs a wide range of Travel, Tourism and Aviation courses. We work closely with local, national and international employers including a variety of independent and well-known hotel chains in the UK, Europe and Africa, a host of visitor attractions in the UK and East Midlands Airport. The department has built up a strong reputation for high quality course delivery culminating in the LSIS STAR Award for Innovative Teaching and Learning. The Tourism department at Central helped to set up the Institute of Travel and Tourism of The Gambia (ITTOG) which was the first specific travel and tourism college in The Gambia. In recognition of this, the College achieved the Virgin Holidays 2012 Responsible Tourism Award for Best Engagement with Peoples and Cultures. Through this fantastic College project we can provide our learners with the opportunity to study, volunteer and/or link directly with the Gambian learners.

HNC/HND IN Travel & Tourism Management Using holistic learning approaches we ensure each learner is fully supported to develop higher level skills required for supervisory/managerial roles and we will ensure learners develop many transferable skills that will enable them to work in a variety of sectors. This course will offer access to a variety of international trips and will develop learners’ global and sustainability awareness which are key subjects for employment in the Travel & Tourism sector. The Tourism team have a wide range of academic and industrial experience and we are passionate about the success of our learners and their progression.

This course provides the knowledge, understanding and academic skills to provide the potential necessary for employment in this sector at a supervisory or management level. Learners will be expected to take part in trips including an overseas residential to either China or The Gambia. Modules The course covers a range of related units which may include: HNC units: • The developing manager • Hospitality provision • Heritage and cultural tourism

Course Content The travel and tourism and visitor economy sector is one of the most exciting, vibrant and growing industries in the world, with a multibillion pound estimated revenue that generates millions of related jobs and occupations.

• Marketing • Finance and funding • Visitor attraction management HND units: • Sustainable tourism development • Contemporary issues in travel and tourism • Legislation and ethics in the travel and tourism sector • Research project

Entry Requirements Applicants should have successfully completed the following: • A minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) grade C or above including English and 160 UCAS points at A level. or • MPP in BTEC Extended Diploma or • an Access to Higher Education Certificate in a related field e.g. Business. Mature applicants with relevant experience are encouraged to apply and will be considered on a case by case basis and will be subject to interview. Assessment A combination of continuous assessment which includes assignments, research projects, case studies, presentations and study trips. Progression HNC and HND are both stand-alone qualifications. Successful HNC students can progress to the HND or progress into a broad range of related managerial opportunities within the visitor economy. Successful HND students can progress also to a wide range of related managerial opportunities within the visitor economy or it can be used to access additional Higher Education qualifications.
