GET TO WHERE YOU WANT TO BE
Whether you’re returning to education after a break, want to progress your career with a higher level qualification, or are looking to learn a new skill – we have a course for you
Making the decision to study part-time is not just about gaining a qualification: it can be the first step towards securing the job you want, changing career, learning a completely new skill for pleasure or getting ahead in your chosen profession. At Central, our part-time courses offer flexible study times at venues throughout Nottinghamshire, to fit around your other commitments. We offer a choice of more than 200 courses including leisure courses, professional qualifications in hairdressing, accounting, or counselling or why not explore a work-related course in anything from care and early years to food safety?
If you’re looking to get back into work or train for a new job, a part-time course can make your CV stand out from the crowd.
So, no matter what level of study you choose, it can be a springboard to further learning and improved career prospects, as well as hugely rewarding.
For example, did you know that people who successfully complete a course at level 3 or above are more likely to find a job, with an employment rate of 81.4% compared to 59.6% for those with a qualification below level 2? *
If you simply want to try something new or improve skills such as English, maths or ICT, you can choose from a range of courses at community venues across Nottingham too.
Also, people who undertake training have reported improved communication and team working skills (which are key requirements for many employers) as well as increased confidence levels.
Throughout this course guide we’ve highlighted the courses in each area that are delivered at a professional level

HIGHER EDUCATION COURSE GUIDE
Did you know that at Central, we have a relaxed and friendly higher education (HE) study environment, with smaller class sizes than universities and supportive teaching staff? Some of our university-level courses can be studied part-time or even in the evenings, and all are relevant to the world of work. In fact, you can be confident that choosing Central for HE study will offer you a competitive edge in the employment market and many of our staff have current industry experience to share with you. Don’t have typical qualifications? Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and in many cases we can consider mature students with relevant experience. Victor Onasanya studied GCSE English part-time at Central, and fitted it around his job. He said:
Central College has helped me on my journey to university
“Central College helped me to get a grade C in GCSE English, exactly what I needed to secure my place at university to study Adult Nursing. I’ve worked in nursing and care settings for some time and decided to get a formal qualification, but to get onto the degree I needed to get an updated English qualification. I was able to study for the GCSE at Central College in the evenings, which was perfect as it fitted in with my working hours.” 5
LEARNING THAT PAYS HAVE YOU CONSIDERED AN APPRENTICESHIP? Apprenticeships are a great way to study for a nationally recognised qualification, get on-the-job training in the workplace and earn money while you learn. You will be employed by a local company in your chosen area of work. Learning for the Apprenticeship may take place either in College one day a week, or it can be done in your workplace. As an apprentice you’ll build up knowledge and develop your skills in the workplace, which will enable you to produce evidence for your qualification. The Apprenticeship qualification is made up of several different components: this includes assessing your competency within the workplace, the technical knowledge of your specific industry and a functional skills element of maths, English and ICT, if required. Apprenticeships at Central College are offered from Level 2 (Intermediate) and there is the opportunity for you to progress to a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship.
WHAT VACANCIES DOES THE COLLEGE HAVE? We work with hundreds of local employers, many of whom are looking for apprentices. If you would like to look at the vacancies we currently have available visit our website www.centralnottingham.ac.uk

JAMES’ STORY
ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP, LEVEL 3
James (27) completed his technical certificate and NVQ 3 in Engineering Technical Support at Central and is employed as a Production Controller by international boiler manufacturer and engineers, Hoval. In addition to what he learnt on his course, James has assisted in implementing a stock management (SAP) system at Hoval. He says the knowledge he gained during his programme at Central has enabled him to accurately plan and schedule activities back on the shop-floor at Hoval as well as gaining a rounded appreciation for many shop floor processes. Supported by his employer to attend college one day each week, James studied at Central for three years, He enjoyed his time at College enormously, and gradually progressed to the level 3 qualification, learning the principles of fabrication and welding techniques and the science behind it.
“I always looked forward to my days at Central.” said James. “There was a great atmosphere and I always came away with new knowledge. The tutors have industry backgrounds so they can relate what they’re teaching you to real situations in the workplace – and they’re very good at getting the information across in an understandable way.” James added: “After three years of studying I am going to focus on work for a while but I do have plans to carry on and go for the HNC in Engineering, and hope to keep progressing until I get my degree.”

DEVELOP A NEW SKILL ON YOUR DOORSTEP. COMMUNITY LEARNING INCLUDES A RANGE OF COURSES DELIVERED ACROSS THE COUNTY AT A VENUE NEAR YOU
in association with Central College Nottingham The College delivers courses in partnership with the Sherwood Textile and Cookery Workshops. They offer a wide range of accredited courses in crafts and cookery. For further details of the courses listed please check the Central College website or www.thetextileworkshop.co.uk or contact Karen Taylor on 07809 158606. Enrolment and course fees If you are paying the full course fee listed, then you have two ways to pay: •
Pay in full with a debit or credit card by calling the enrolment line: 0115 914 6414
Or •
Pay half the fee on enrolment and the second half via direct debit. To pay in two instalments you must call into a main Central College site and complete the direct debit form. No postdated cheques for second instalments are accepted.
If you are in receipt of benefits You will not be able to enrol over the phone so you will need to come to a main Central College site to complete and sign the enrolment form. Guidelines for choosing a course All learners can enrol on more than one Level 1 course, as long as the courses chosen have different qualification codes. Accredited courses are co-funded by the Skills Funding Agency. Funding rules allow each learner to complete a qualification once. To help ensure learners select a qualification once, each course title has a qualification code attached e.g. ART, HTC, COO, CAK, TEX. You should ensure that the code is different for each course you choose. The College staff who enrol you can give you guidance. About NCFE Awards (level 1) NCFE qualifications are practical courses with ongoing assessment of learning by the course tutor. There is no formal exam, but all learners are required to complete a portfolio of evidence to show the skills and techniques covered. The qualification is comparable to working at NVQ level 1 and GCSEs. Courses will allow you to work at your own pace, with your tutor’s support, to achieve the qualification. During the course you will be shown key skills and techniques associated with your chosen craft and will work towards completing an individual project of your choice, with the support of the course tutor. You will use research skills and be encouraged by your tutor to set personal challenges to ensure you make the best progress and get the most out of your course, whether you are a total beginner or already have some experience.
From unique handmade jewellery to world cookery, there is a course to cater for all creative types

ENROL
If you find a course you’re interested in and would like further information, please note the course code and either phone our Telephone Enquiry Centre on 0115 914 6414 or visit our website at www.centralnottingham.ac.uk
If a course is marked with an ‘A’ you’ll need to complete an online or paper application form. If a course is marked with a ‘G’, you will need to call the Telephone Enquiry Centre to get further information on how to proceed with your enrolment.
You can easily enrol on most of the courses in this guide over the telephone with a debit or credit card by phoning 0115 914 6414. If you are in receipt of a means tested benefit and believe that this entitles you to a reduction in your course fees, you will need to bring the relevant documentation in person to one of our main sites. You will not be able to enrol over the phone with your benefits.
For courses over £100, you can spread the cost by paying in instalments. Ask for details.
FEES AND PAYMENT The course fee listed in this Guide is the one you pay, unless you are eligible for fee reductions (see fee waiver table on page 13). There are a number of ways that students can pay their course fees:
12
•
Cheques - to be made payable to “Central College Nottingham”
•
Credit /debit card - minimum payment of £10
•
Cash - this should be paid in person at College sites (please do not send cash through the post)
•
Employer paying for fees – the College will require full payment or a letter from the employer, on company headed paper, requesting that an invoice be raised and sent to them for the relevant fee(s). This should be produced at the time of enrolment.
HELP WITH COURSE FEE PAYMENTS
Instalment payments may be made by direct debit where the total course fees are £100 or more. Agreement forms and direct debit authorisations are issued at the College’s main receptions. For courses of 25 weeks or more, an initial deposit is required, and then three further payments will be collected during the course. Instalments are available for shorter courses but these payments are collected by deposit and one further instalment midway through the course. The deposit must be paid at enrolment. An administration fee of £20 is made where instalments are taken out and you choose to be invoiced rather than use the direct debit system. This charge is payable with the deposit. There is no administration fee if you pay by direct debit.
Some part-time courses will need you to purchase additional materials which are linked to your studies, such as books, consumables or the cost of trips. Where applicable these are included in the prices shown. The College will attempt to inform you of such costs at the start of the course. If you have lived outside of the UK/EU or are a national of a country outside of the UK/EU and European Economic Area, you will need to be assessed for fee status as you may not qualify as having “home status” as defined by our Funding Agencies. If assessed as not having “home status” you will need to be referred to the College’s International Office who will be able to advise on fees and other requirements. If this applies to you, just contact the Telephone Enquiry Centre on 0115 914 6414 who will put you through to the International Team.
FEE REDUCTION/REMISSION •
If you are 16-18 (as of 31st August 2015) you will not be required to pay tuition/exam/registration fees. You will only be liable for any course related costs, e.g. uniform, equipment, etc.

•

Safeguarding
COURSES THAT CLOSE
Central College Nottingham is committed to the safeguarding of all the members of its community. We have a statutory and moral duty to ensure that we protect against harm and/or abuse, as well as promote the welfare of our students when they are receiving education and training at the College. The designated person and lead for Safeguarding is the Head of Learner Services, who can be contacted on 0115 914 6376.
If the College closes a course, a full refund will be given. In all other cases, refunds will NOT be given unless written proof of exceptional circumstances can be given to the College. Exceptional circumstances include health, maternity and employment grounds. In this case, a refund will be given on a pro-rata basis from the date of receipt of the written notification of withdrawal from the student. Refunds will be for tuition fees only. The College cannot refund other costs which may have already been incurred such as materials, examination and registration fees. The College refund policy is available on request or as part of the College’s terms and conditions provided at enrolment. 17

About NCFE Awards (level 1): NCFE qualifications are practical courses with ongoing assessment of learning by the course tutor. There is no formal exam, but all learners are required to complete a portfolio of evidence to show the skills and techniques covered. The qualification is comparable to working at NVQ level 1 and GCSEs. Courses will allow you to work at your own pace, with your tutor’s support, to achieve the qualification. Summary of course content: You will be shown key skills and techniques associated with your chosen craft. You will work towards completing an individual project of your choice, with the support of the course tutor. You will use research skills and be encouraged by your tutor to set personal challenges to ensure you make the best progress and get the most out of your course, whether you are a total beginner or already have some experience. 21

TAKE A LOOK AT OUR OTHER COURSES FURTHER EDUCATION Further education is essentially “post-school” level so from aged 16+. You don’t have to stay at school until you are 18 so College offers an opportunity to study a vocational course in a subject you enjoy e.g engineering, hairdressing, sport or IT. However College is not just a place for young people, many of our learners are now 19+
