Xavier Garza Selected to Represent the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps in Vancouver Canada
Ĺ’
by LTJG Rob Robbins, NSCC, Commanding Officer, Thomas R. Norris Battalion
Xavier Garza, left, and also shown with other cadets preparing for the United States Naval Academy summer seminar. Xavier Garza, who will be a senior this fall at Ontario Christian School, was recently selected to participate in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps International Exchange Program. As one of only nine cadets selected, he will be heading to Vancouver, Canada to work alongside cadets from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Sweden. The training will take place at the Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Training Center, HMCS Quadra in Comox, British Columbia. The Training Center is situated on Canadian Department of National Defense property at Comox Harbor and is approximately 150 miles north of Victoria on Vancouver Island. The cadets will be trained in small boat operations, sailing, firearms, shipboard and military drills. They will also travel throughout British Columbia to experience a variety of Social and cultural activities. Garza has been selected to attend the United States Naval Academy summer seminar and has also been selected to attend the Coast Guard Summer Academy Introduction Mission program which are both highly competitive. He has also received notification that he is an official candidate to West Point Air Force Naval and Coast Guard Academy. Petty Officer Garza is working towards his goal of becoming a Naval Officer and Aviator on an aircraft carrier. He earned his Bronze Wings with the FAA course / exam as

well as his Silver Wings when he acquired his student pilot license. He is currently accumulating time solo piloting so he can become a licensed private pilot when he turns 17 this summer. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally chartered nonprofit civilian youth organization for young people, ages 11 through 17. We are comprised of a junior and a senior cadet program. We are sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by both the US Navy and Coast Guard. Every year our cadets participate in training opportunities such as SCUBA, field and medical training, photojournalism, military police, science and sailing. When cadets join the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, they embark upon a path of lifelong leadership. The program will teach them how to successfully lead groups of their peers and will also Inspire them to become leaders in their schools and communities. The Desert Storm Division conducts its drill meetings at Sweeten Hall in Rancho Cucamonga. For more information on the Sea Cadet program please visit www.seacadets.org and for information about The Desert Storm Division please e-mail ENS Suzanne Kowahl-Davis at sdaviskowahl@gmail.com or desertstormdivision@gmail.com. q
Homerun!!! That’s what our 20th Annual Benefit Auction & Dinner could be compared to – we hit the ball out of the park! by Chanin Zaragoza, Director of Advancement This year’s theme, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” drew more than 300 guests, many of whom came wearing their favorite team jersey. It was great to watch a little fun rivalry going on between the fans of different teams. Our very own band director, Lance Beckford, led our entertainment with a jazz band, which included our interim superintendent, Dr. Ken Bootsma on piano. A special moment of the night came when Mrs. Krout led our choir and guests in singing our country’s National Anthem. During the “seventh-inning stretch”, the choir called everyone to their feet to join in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”. Arms around each other while swaying back and forth, the crowd got in the spirit of the night. The variety of items for silent bidding ranged from jewelry to a paddleboard to 500 homemade, made-to-order cookies. There was plenty of fun and fellowship as well as great food and scrumptious desserts. As always, the auctioneer kept the evening rolling with fun and competitive bidding. Who would have thought a jar full of coins would sell four times and make $3,750?! The “Iceman” who purchased it last, promised to bring it back to next year’s auction and begin the bidding all over again. Thanks Iceman! A very special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Kraemer, current OC family and owners of Los Serranos Golf Club, for continually donating the venue for this fundraising event. A big shout out to the generous sponsors and donors, the auction would not succeed
without you, and thank you to our bidders for helping us raise almost $190,000! May our Lord richly bless each of you in return. Thank you for continuing to support Christian education and growing God’s kingdom. Be on the lookout for your invitation for next year’s spring auction. You won’t want to miss it! q

Athletic Boosters Club Hosts 173 Golfers in its 23rd Annual Classic by Kevin Knutson, Boosters Golf Classic Committee Chairman On Friday, June 3, 173 golfers teed off at the beautiful Los Serranos Country Club for the 23rd annual OC Boosters Golf Classic.
Œ
The morning began with opening prayer and a wonderful rendition of “God Bless America” sung by Doug Westenbroek. Our annual tradition of auctioning off top members of the Ontario Christian Knight’s Golf team followed with brisk bidding on freshmen William Mouw and Hannah Zeman. Then it was time to hit the links and for the real fun to begin. Golfers filled both the north and south courses with men and women of all skill levels. Although the weather was a scorcher with temperatures approaching 100 degrees, everyone seemed to enjoy the time spent on the course. A highlight was golfer Tom Kiss making a memory of a lifetime with his hole-in-one on South Course hole #6. For his shot, Tom walked away with some nice golf gear, but alas, the hole was not designated as the win-a-car hole.
On behalf of the OC Booster’s Club, thanks to all our loyal golfers, event and tee sign sponsors, and supporters for their generosity. The Boosters expect to net around $30,000 from this key annual fundraiser. The proceeds will be used to enhance and equip our fine high school and middle school sports programs. A special thank you goes out to the club members and volunteers who made the event a huge success! We hope to see all of you again next year on Friday, May 19, 2017. q

After play, the golfers witnessed the helicopter ball drop and made their way to the banquet room. The awards luncheon provided a nice ending to the day. The meal was great and there were plenty of silent auction and raffle prizes to go around.
Congratulations to the team of Ron Haringa, Brian Vipond, Darrell Vanden Berge, Rich Merritt and auctioned player William Mouw, who came in with a nifty First Place score of 57. Following closely with a best ball score of 58 were the team of Eric and Blake Fikse, Billy Mouw, and Bradley Fox to capture Second Place honors. Third Place winners with a final score of 59 were the team of Ed Hwang, Al Aleman, Tom Kiss, and Geoff Frazier. The Senior or Lady Winners - Al Scheenstra, Mitch De Hoog, and Chuck De Hoog – opened up their checkbooks to add Hannah Zeman and finished with a sparkling score of 64.

Grandparent’s Day by Mike Wiersma, Elementary School Principal One of the most precious things to see is your children singing and praising the name of Jesus, especially when those children are your grandchildren. On March 25 parents, grandparents, and friends were ushered into the presence of a loving, heavenly Father as our students exalted the name of Jesus. Students from kindergarten through middle school participated through song, memory verses, testimonies, and video of the holiness and majesty of Jesus Christ as well as the impact that their grandparents have had on them throughout their lives. Grandparents leave a wonderful legacy of faith, discipleship and worship and this was a special day where our students say thank you for that legacy. We then invite all our grandparents back to the campus for a chance to walk in the shoes of the students. This provides grandma and grandpa an opportunity to see the daily routines and activities of their grandchildren and the tremendous impact of Christian education woven into the daily lives of our students. Mrs. Amy Munive transforms our campus into a beautiful and colorful artistic campus which provides a glimpse into the skills and talents our students are fostering here at Ontario Christian. Psalm 100:5 reminds us that, “the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.” Grandparent’s day at Ontario Christian provides us a chance to live into this verse as we share God’s glory and love from one generation to the next. q

The Redcoats Are Coming! by Rick Jasper, 5th Grade Teacher
Œ
In fifth grade, students begin to learn about American history. A large part of the year is spent learning about the founding of the original 13 colonies and their influence in shaping the laws, traditions, and passion for religious liberties that formed the foundational roots of the United States of America. As a final project and as a fun culminating activity of 5th grade, students participate in our school’s annual Colonial Fair. On June 10, the 5th grade held its 20th annual Colonial Fair. This event has grown in scope and scale since its inception and has become a very popular annual event looked forward to by the entire grade school--but especially those 5th graders participating. Each 5th grader chooses a colonial trade or activity they want to learn more about. They then develop a character who will demonstrate and perform that skill at the fair. Costumes, props, and old English accents are all a fun part of the performance and add to the overall experience. Our school’s fair is particularly unique in that our outdoor location adds authenticity with the dust, flies, and manure smells that would most certainly have been prevalent in the original colonies. Because of our historic ties to the agricultural heritage of our valley, we are also often able to add various animals or livestock that enhance the overall experience. On the day of the fair, each class from pre-K and above as well as parents, relatives, and friends are invited to “step back in time” to the 16th century and learn a bit about what it was like to live in colonial times. Guests enjoy a variety of experiences. They might sample colonial foods, try their hand at colonial games and trades, practice writing with a quill pen, pet a pig, chicken, or calf, and perhaps even spend time in the stocks. For both actors and guests, it’s a learning experience like none other! q

Farewell Good and Faithful Servants

Sara Admiraal: HS (2004 – 2016)
Julie Bykerk: 2nd Grade (2005 – 2016)
Sara joined us in 2004 following a series of short time math teachers and brought real stability to our math department along with a work ethic and commitment to excellence. She taught almost every math class that we have at OCS at one time, but settled into her self-described dream job in 2007. Although she looks too young for this, this Math Rabbi already has Disciples teaching elsewhere because of her influence. Sara, it’s a matter of time before we get one here at OC. Sara, thank you and bless you.
A gifted and passionate second grade teacher for 11 years. Julie loved to share her enthusiasm for writing, scripture, and reading with her students. Mrs. Bykerk’s classroom was a place of joy and creativity as kids were daily encouraged to reach their full potential. We extend our blessings to her and her growing family as she remains home to nurture and grow their children.
Luke Blacquiere: HS (2005 – 2016)
Judy Hoekstra: MS SIP (1985 – 2016)
Luke joined OCS from Gallup New Mexico. Luke was one of our first traveling teachers because we had a shortage of classrooms and when given the opportunity to have his own classroom, he jumped at what he describes as the best classroom on campus. His approach to the classroom is very scientific – during observations he would have plans for changes to the lesson plan for the next class period. Lessons are experiments – it’s OK to adapt, change, and improve. We have learned much about statistics and interpreting data to improve the educational process. He has an intense commitment to preparation and excellence, both have made him an excellent teacher. Luke led the chess club here for many years. Assisted with surf club. Announced for soccer games. Luke, Thank you and we wish you God’s blessing as you leave.
Retiring after 35 years with Ontario Christian, we bid a fond farewell and Godspeed to Judy Hoekstra – middle school teacher extraordinaire! Judy is retiring from teaching after 35 years with Ontario Christian. From Bible to SIP (Student Improvement Program), Judy always gave 110% - toward her students, parents, and fellow staff. One of her many gifts was in writing encouragement notes and cards to those she ministered to. Most of us still have those cards, which are a constant reminder of how good God is, how much someone cared, and how important community was for Judy. Judy will be missed greatly, but we wish her God’s richest blessings as she heads into this new chapter of her life. We thank her for being a true example of what a Christian servant looks like. Judy’s “fingerprints” are all over our middle school… and will not soon be removed or forgotten!

Nathan Kok: HS (2003 – 2016)
Kim Swanson: HS Librarian
Nathan came to the middle school for two years and then moved to the high school. He followed his first class to high school, then spoke at the graduation. Nate has been a leader in our social studies department the past 10+ years, teaching AP US History and AP Government. Nate sits down amongst his students, prodding and challenging them to grasp the information and skills they need for AP tests and life. He is a Godly example for our students to be mentored by. He has helped with our Leadership Endorsement Program. He has coached baseball and basketball, inspiring students and athletes to success. We are excited for the opportunity you have to grow and learn in your school in Indonesia and look forward to having you rejoin us in a couple of years. Bless you and April. We’ll see you soon.
Sue Roeda: ES Librarian
(2007 – 2016)
Kim came to us from Valley Christian and called this her dream job because she loves books. It doesn’t hurt that it shortened her commute from 1 hour or more to a 5 minute walk. Crossing Philadelphia was her biggest challenge. The Library has always been a safe haven for students. Kim maintained that presence for OCHS and our students. Kim first helped, then took leadership of the Renaissance program and would say she finally has it organized. She offered us quick wit and a pun for the day which was a good way to begin any day. Kim had much to offer us about our Hebrew roots because she has lived in Jerusalem. Her husband is an OT scholar and we benefitted from that as well as the tie to Providence Christian College. Thank you for expanding or understanding. Bless you Kim.
(1994 – 2016)
Every day students were welcomed into the library by the warm smiles of Mrs. Roeda. She could make any story book come to life with her animated voices and enthusiasm for reading. Mrs. Roeda helped create the beautiful library that we enjoy today, a place where the love of reading is kindled every day. We extend our blessing to her and her family as she enters the world of retirement.
Thoughtful and loving friends who wish to honor either living or departed friends and family, may give gifts of remembrance to the Ontario Christian School Foundation. Those honored by such gifts at the commemoration of a wedding, birth, anniversary, retirement, or other events will be notified by an appropriate note as will the family of those honored in death. The name of the person remembered will be listed in our newsletter unless requested otherwise. The amount of the gift is kept confidential and is tax deductible.

GAME SHOW
by Jonathan Schaap, High School English Teacher Come on down Ontario Christian! You’re the next contestant on The Price Is Right, Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Jeopardy, and So You Think You Can’t Dance!
Œ
This year’s 14th annual talent show (Gameshow) literally pulled audience members from their seats and into the games. The stage in the Albers Chapel became a social gaming platform as almost 60 seniors hosted a variety of Acts for this year’s show. Their multiple talents were on display as the tech booth was occupied, decorations/artwork were exhibited, and lines were memorized. A live stream video really amplified the show this year also. The props were fully immersive as we had a working Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud buzzers, a new car, and a Price Is Right showcase showdown wheel outside as well. It seems a majority of students and teachers have a hand in each year’s talent show in one way or another – this year was no exception… A big thank you to everyone involved! It really brings our campus/community together and celebrates the vast variety of skills (sometimes newly discovered) that God has given us. It is a fitting event to end the school year and especially for the seniors who host the show and who are concluding their careers here at Ontario Christian – it’s a memory that lasts a lifetime. The talent show may be one of the best ways one can spend a Thursday – it pulls in students of course but also parents, alumni, and people from the community. Many theater productions require the price of an admission ticket, but our goal is to keep this school event free for as long as possible (we actually gave out cash prizes and so forth to contestants and audience members just for coming). We were thrilled that both shows filled the auditorium to capacity – the Acts and hosts feed off the energy of the crowd! We had more Acts audition this year than ever before, and it was thrilling to see such a variety of talents this year – we had musicians, martial artists, dancers, a launchpad engineer, bucket percussion, and more! This year’s show had plenty of opportunities to laugh at ourselves as well. Ultimately, through all the fun, fanfare, and fellowship, the message of this year’s theme/script articulated that amidst a world/culture that constantly seeks to undermine God’s Word by redefining what is right and wrong or seeking after humanism/pluralism or escaping through apathy/those ever-ready hand-held devices we hold so dear – amidst the fray, Ontario Christian professes a reality/worldview that is grounded in Scripture, that gives joyful purpose, and that is so much better than what the world has to offer. The realities that we create so quickly entice then crumble, accelerate our ruin, and distract us from the Truth, the truth of Jesus Christ and who He is and what He has done. I pray that we embrace His reality and seek to glorify Him through the beautiful talents He has equipped in each of us. Game on OCHS! Game on. q
