Rooted and Growing

Imagine our surprise! I, along with others, had always pictured the tree in Psalm 1 in a very different setting-beautiful green grass, a calm stream, and a tree with shade in abundance. As we listened to the lesson from Ray, we realized that the picture David may have had was powerful--a hardy tree whose roots go down deeply and which is dependent on God supplying all the water it needs and more.

We all need roots like that as well. Deep roots digging firmly into God’s promises given to us in His Word. Roots that will sustain us in the trials of life and in the seasons of life that are dry, dusty and windy. Our theme for this year is Psalm 1:3. We want to be people who are planted in God’s Word, men and women who bear fruit in God’s kingdom and through whom God can gather His fruit. Our prayer is that we will show that fruit to the children He has

entrusted to us. The students may never see us reading, meditating on His word, or conversing with Him in prayer, but we trust they will know of our rooted faith by our reactions and responses to the challenges we all face.

God has blessed OCS with another new superintendent!

We are pleased to welcome Ms. Jenn Thompson who will be joining our community in July of 2018.

She comes to us with experience as a superintendent, a teacher, and a principal. We will be sharing more information about Ms. Thompson in our next Knightline with you. In the meantime, please thank God for answering our prayers and ask Him to prepare her for her move to the Ontario area.

We are also pleased to have experienced the groundbreaking for our new gymnasium/student center on the high school campus. I know many have been praying for this event for many years, and we are grateful that He has answered those prayers in His time and with His provision.

I remember very clearly on my first visit to Israel standing in the wilderness, the sun beating down on us, and seeing a tree with roots going through the rocks. It was clinging to the side of a wadi, one of many shallow ravines dotting the landscape. Occasionally, water filled the wadis when it rained in the mountains, which are located many miles away. One moment it was a dusty, rock strewn ravine, and the next it could be filled with rushing water. The leader of our group, Ray VanderLaan, told us that this likely was the picture David had in mind when he wrote Psalm 1. “[T] hat person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season “ (v. 3). Its roots dug deeply into the ground, holding it firm and supplying water as nourishment, even in the dry desert.

by Bernie Gabrielse, OC Athletic Boosters Club President For the past 40 plus years, Ontario Christian’s Athletic Boosters Club has held a Labor Day Pancake Breakfast at OCHS. For years it helped to usher in a new school year as yearbooks from the previous year were handed out, slightly used uniforms were sold, and the cross country team hosted a 5K run. In effect, our pancake breakfast brought a lot of people together for various reasons. It is also a great way to see familiar faces, enjoy Christian fellowship with friends, and to promote OC school spirit in a most positive way, all while enjoying a great breakfast.

success for all who attended. A special word of thanks goes to Kimberly Olvera and Gary Conrad for the work they did behind the scenes organizing and purchasing the food we needed.

This year was no different; we served 483 breakfasts, which is down a little, but considering school had already been in session for two weeks, we were pleased with the turnout, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. As we’ve heard said, the pancake breakfast is “a great PR day for our school.”

Ontario Christian’s Boosters Club continues to meet every fourth Monday of the month in the high school library at 7:00 p.m. Anyone post-high school age is welcome to join us; we are a fun group. We continue to work to raise money to enhance our athletic facilities, and just completed another edition of the athletic program, which is always a popular item. Since it is free, we encourage everyone to take a couple copies and spread them around the Chino/Ontario area. We also ask that our community supports those that so generously support our school and its boosters program with ads in the book. Our club tries to support all the sports teams at OC, including those at our middle school. Our three main fundraising events are the OC Golf Tournament held in May, the publication of the athletic program/directory, and our pancake breakfast.

The pancake breakfast brings out a lot of workers. Teachers and coaches come out to flip pancakes and past Boosters Club members show up to help and to reminisce about how much fun it is to be a part of Boosters. We get great help from our gifted cheerleaders and majorettes along with their coaches.

We also get a great turnout of many current Boosters Club members. It takes a real team effort; so a very special word of thanks goes out to all that helped make the pancake breakfast a

While we realize that athletics play only a small part in our school’s overall offerings, they are an important part of the development and growth of the students involved. We ask that everyone to remember our athletic teams, athletic directors, and coaches in prayer, as well as Ontario Christian School in its entirety. Design and Modeling

By Dan Brown, STEAM Director This fall, Ontario Christian took a big step forward in its commitment to bringing STEAM education to its families.

Design and Modeling was kicked off at the middle school, where 46 students are currently halfway through their first STEAM class. This class is the perfect blend of science, technology, engineering, art and math; it allows students to see the practical application of the concepts they are learning in relation to real world problems. Day 1 introduced students to the exciting world of engineering as teams were created to tackle our first design challenge. In this activity, students were given supplies and a task to complete. It was up to them to decide on how they were going to meet that challenge. Each student had a key role to play as they worked together to devise and build a solution, documenting their approach and sharing their prototypes with the class. This exercise focused on student’s natural problem solving skills.

In a matter of days, we had 12 great solutions.

Technology is also an important aspect of design and modeling. Students will take the engineering techniques and move from paper and pencil to the computer. We will explore computer modeling to analyze more complex problems. Students will also use Computer Aided Design and Drafting software (CADD) to build models that can be printed on a 3D printer, creating quick prototypes to their design solutions.

Now that students have had a taste for what can be accomplished, we have introduced the process of learning some engineering techniques to make them better problem solvers. Students learn to use the Engineering Design Process to generate multiple solutions to a given problem. They work with industry standard tools and techniques, such as multiview drawings, dimensioning guidelines, measuring systems, unit conversion, and precision tools like dial calipers. All of these tools illustrate the importance of precision and accuracy in communicating their design ideas to others and are critical to the successful Design and Modeling student.

Looking ahead, we will be establishing an Engineering Club for the elementary school grades 2 – 6. In this weekly club, students will meet and learn about engineering concepts.

Each month, students will immerse themselves in a different area of engineering through several activities for the students to explore. Keep your eyes open for an informational flyer and sign-up details.

Students are getting a great opportunity to apply the 4 C’s in this class as these solutions require creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration with other students to develop well thought out solutions to the challenges they are given. These problems also require our students to examine our world and encourage them to look for ways they can use their God-given talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

At Ontario Christian, we are committed to Growing Christian Leaders. Our STEAM classes are one of many paths for our students to be equipped with the skills they will need to lead them to success in high school, college, and the world. q

Recent Events at OC

Paint Night Fundraiser for Team Nicaragua

Paint and peacock feathers flew in the high school art room on a Saturday evening in September as 16 painters snacked, chatted, and created unique works of art. Student volunteers circled with snacks and sweet treats. Paint, canvas, and instruction were provided to mothers and daughters who left the night with their own creations of turquoise, blue, and gold.

The most memorable part of the night, according to OC freshman Caitlyn Campbell, was “being able to experience painting with my mom and grandma and having a good laugh at our creations.”

But they were not crafting the colorful peacocks just for themselves. The proceeds from this first-time fundraising event were donated to the team of high school students traveling to serve in Nicaragua for this year’s interim week.

Traveling January 6-13, 2018, with the missions organization Students International, 12 Ontario Christian students will serve and be blessed by the people in the town of Masaya, which is located about 40 minutes west of the capital city of Managua. These students will spend five days assisting in ongoing ministries in the areas of agriculture, appropriate technology, education, health care, microfinances, sports, and women’s counseling. They will also attend a local church service and participate in relevant cultural experiences.

The trip will be a valuable experience in the life of each student. Nothing can replace the experience of going with a group of like-minded peers to a far away place that is different from where one lives, ready to share the love of Jesus. The students will connect and share with the people in Nicaragua, who are more familiar than they realize, that we are all a part of the same Kingdom.

The main reason to attend a paint-night event is for fun, fellowship, and free delicious baked goods, but attendees to this event also had the pleasure of contributing to a cause whose reach goes beyond our comprehension.

Growing Middle School Leaders

by Aaron Genzink, Eighth Grade Science Teacher/Middle School Coordinator Are you a leader? Do you want to be? These are pretty powerful questions to ask, but the way we answer them will impact ourselves and others in a multitude of ways. Most of us will admit that we are leaders, whether we want to be or not. The true question should be this: what type of leader are you?

In September, the 8th grade students went to Thousand Pines Christian Camp in Crestline on a day-long retreat where the main focus was answering the question, “What does it take to be a good leader?” Miss Wynia, Mr. Piper, Mrs. Powell, and Mr. Genzink shared some pretty key aspects of good, strong, Christian leaders. These can apply to students as well as adults in almost every walk of life.

Leaders are disciples.

Leaders are servants.

Leaders are humble.

Leaders have influence.

Leaders are rooted in the word and growing in Christ.

Leaders pray.

Students didn’t waste any time to practice some of these leadership skills as they encouraged and supported each other on rock walls, ziplines, and low ropes courses. They served and influenced each other while problem-solving in other team activities. They spent time worshipping, journaling, and praying communally and individually, and reflected on God’s word.

During the weeks following the retreat, the students have been putting these skills to use both in and out of the classroom. In student council, the 8th grade leaders are having positive impacts on the 7th grade council members as they work together to find ways to unify the middle schoolers. In the peer tutoring exploratory class, both 7th and 8th grade students serve as tutors for elementary students. Volleyball, football, and cross country team members encourage, support, and work together for the benefit of their team, trying to live out these leadership traits and glorify God in the process.

On the first Wednesday of October, the 8th graders had a very tangible way to live out their calling as servant-leaders as they participated in their first service day of the year. A group of students went to Isaiah’s Rock where they set up food for their weekly food drives for community members in need. Another group went to serve at Feed the Children as they packed boxes of supplies to be sent around the country to those hit by recent hurricanes. Finally, another group of students stayed on campus and served as helpers in preschool and elementary classrooms. q

Rooted and Growing: Recent Events at OC

Ontario Christian Middle School student, Lilyan Chu, has always been into drawing. In fact, she has been attending Pony Art House for the last five years to perfect her craft. Lilyan chose to utilize a few techniques she learned from Pony Art House as inspiration for her Rooted and Growing art piece.

For the first time in Ontario Christian Schools history, the Knightline cover was opened up to the Ontario Christian students. Students had the opportunity to submit an art piece (graphic design, digital photography, black and white photography, drawing, painting, and printmaking) for the chance to have their masterpiece seen by the masses on the front cover of the Knightline Fall Edition magazine.

The art piece had to be centered around this year’s school theme, Rooted and Growing, and based on Psalm 1:3. Students were encouraged to be creative and think outside of the box to interpret what Rooted and Growing looked like and meant to them.

After receiving nearly 100 beautiful submissions from various age groups, Ontario Christian Schools is proud to introduce to you our Knightline cover contest winner, Lilyan Chu!

The first technique she used was the hatching technique. Hatching is derived from the French word hachure and is an artistic technique that emphasizes the effects of shading by the use of closely spaced parallel lines.

When creating her art piece, Lilyan chose this technique to help emphasize movement in her tree. Lilyan said, “The movement in the tree represents the hardships in life that may sway us. But if we are rooted in Christ, we will stay planted and continue to grow through it.”

Lilyan also employed the artistic technique called pointillism, which uses small dots to form a pattern. Rather then drawing normal leaves, Lilyan wanted to think outside of the box and utilize dots to represent the leaves.

Along with her tree and leaves, Lilyan wanted to include a few more key pieces in her art to help represent life in her tree--fruit and new branches. The fruit in the art piece represents the fruit that is borne in Christ. The new branches growing on the tree, though small and ever so noticeable, represent new life that is found in Christ.

“If people can get one message from this piece,” says Lilyan, “I hope it will encourage them to stay rooted and growing in Christ, even when there are storms that knock them down.”

Meet Sophia Chen (Contest Runner-Up) Sophia is an 11th grade Ontario Christian international student from Shenzhen, China. She has been attending Ontario Christian since 8th grade and attributes her growth and maturity to the community she has here at OC, which played a huge role of inspiration when creating this art piece.

The day before Sophia drew this piece, Sophia was having a really tough day. She decided to contact her parents in China, and was immediately met with love, comfort, and support. Overwhelmed by the love and support she felt from her parents, that night Sophia had a dream about herself as a baby, being in her mother’s womb, receiving that same love and support from not only her parents, but also from the family and friends that surrounded her life. Sophia immediately woke up from the dream and decided to sketch a representation of this dream on a sticky note. As Sophia began to meditate on her dream, she realized that her dream was a representation of her own life. The love she received in the dream represented the love she continues to receive from her family, friends, and Ontario Christian community. Sophia took this dream, and Post-it sketch, and created her interpretation of Rooted and Growing, which is what we see here. The baby represents life, and the colorful leaves represent God, family, friends, teachers, principals, and the whole Ontario Christian community in which she is rooted.

Sophia has a huge passion in drawing and hopes to attend an art school after she graduates from Ontario Christian. “Drawing is just like writing,” says Sophia. “ I need to give the world a message and that message is through art.”

How 3 Way Thrift Works 3 Way Thrift

For many years Ontario Christian has enjoyed partnering with 3 Way Thrift Store, a Biblically-based nonprofit committed to supporting three organizations: Inland Christian Home, Ontario Christian Schools, and Salem Christian Homes. Since 2008 the organization has more than doubled its size, and their support for the three organizations has remained steady. This year OC received $150,000 from 3 Way. We are grateful for this lasting relationship.

Every other Monday, Bill and Joanne Boersma come to Ontario Christian to pick up the donations from OC families. The Boersmas are huge OC fans; they have three children who graduated from OC and six grandchildren currently at OC. Their daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and David Belden, both teach here.

The donations are taken to 3 Way’s Donation Center headquarters in Chino.

The donations go to the Processing Department and are sorted into different areas, such as clothing, electronics, decoration, books, jewelry, and shoes.

Harvest Festival and Groundbreaking Ceremony

Recent Events at OC

This year’s OC Harvest Festival was unlike any other. With food trucks, game booths, pony rides, Cow Plop Bingo, and more, the feeling of Fall was definitely in the air. But what made this year’s festival so unique was the momentous ceremony that took place at the center of the festival.

vest Festival on October 27, the school performed a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the upcoming high school gymnasium and student center. The Board of Trustee’s President, Christine Koontz, set the stage by welcoming and thanking all of the attendees. Attendees also took a moment to reflect on all that God has done, and continues to do, at Ontario Christian School. Interim Superintendent, Jim Hofman, led the ceremony in this time of reflection, and also took the opportunity to introduce the school’s new superintendent, Jennifer Thompson, who will step in next school year, 20182019. The Ontario Christian High School Chorale led the attendees in a song of praise and thanksgiving, the “Doxology”, to remind everyone that none of these blessings would be possible without our Lord and Savior. The ceremony ended with donors, student athletes, and coaches utilizing shovels to symbolize the official breaking of the ground.

Ontario Christian Schools would like to thank every single person who has selflessly given their time, money, prayer, and efforts to make the Ontario Christian School dream a reality. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. q

Back-to-School Bingo Fundraiser

A huge thank you to all family, friends, and local businesses who contributed to this fundraising effort; we will be excited to see these school improvements made. This year, our students each received their own Bingo cards to collect the goal amount toward a potential new school benefit: elementary toward new playground flooring (no more wood chips!) and middle school toward new iPads and classroom technology. The students were also able to earn prizes like certificates to Yogurtland, lunch with principal, or Harvest Festival tickets

To celebrate funds raised, the students dressed up in their favorite superhero outfit and gathered on the field for our first ever life-size Bingo event to compete against the other classes in their grade. The event brought much anticipation as kids waited for their number to be called and excitement as their life-size cards began filling up as they stood in their squares, bringing them closer to calling out “BINGO!” The winning classes won cotton candy and were deemed the ultimate Bingo champions of their grade! Thanks to all who came and volunteered for this event, making it a memorable experience for the kids; hopefully, this will be the first of many more improvements and exciting developments to come. q
