Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult. As a matter of fact, an adult can read to a student, or a student can read to an adult, it still counts! The only reading that does not apply are homework or class assignments. What better way to develop a greater appreciation for books then when students see that you think read-
ing is important too! Have fun exploring the world of reading with your Ontario Christian community! For more information regarding the program and deadline, contact our Read to Succeed Coordinator, Mrs. Christie Swangel at cswangel@ocschools.org. Happy reading! q
OC Students Perform at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC by John M. Ysursa and Aline Biscaichipy Anema
Riley, Jackson & Analise Anema, Janine Dutrey and Nolan Jannen have been students at Ontario Christian since pre-school. Riley, Jackson and Analise (parents are Greg & Aline Anema) are grandchildren to immigrants Jean Guillaume and Veronique Biscaichipy who came to the United States in 1964 (after serving in the Algerian War) and 1970 (after she met Guillaume!) for a better life. They together owned and ran Brothers 3 Dairy along with two other brothers. They were instrumental, as were many others, in keeping their culture alive through food, dance, song, music, language, sports and games. Their grandchildren continue those traditions today, especially through dance. Most recently, they represented the culture on invitation from the Smithsonian at the Annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. on the mall. During the most recent Labor Day weekend, the Chino Basque Club also celebrated their 49th Annual festival which all five (Riley, Jackson, Analise, Janine & Nolan) participated in. Janine Dutrey (parents Javier “John” & Anne Dutrey) is a granddaughter to Jean & Maritchu Dutrey. They immigrated to this valley, started and ran their own motel on Mission Avenue. They too are very involved in keeping the culture alive which has now been passed down to their granddaughter. She belongs to the local Chino Basque dance group, Gauden Bat, along with Riley and Jackson. Nolan Jannen (parents Michelle Jaureguy & Richard Jannen) is grandson to Sauveur (deceased) and Marguerite Jaureguy. They immigrated in the 1960’s. Sauveur milked cows in the area and Marguerite raised the kids at home. Nolan is very proud of his heritage and loves telling his classmates about it and how he is involved. His mother Michelle is one of our musicians and plays the accordion!
The homeland of the Basques is northern Spain and southern France. Two thousand years when the Romans moved into this part of the world, they encountered a people they considered to be “strange” because of their language. One name the Romans gave them was “vascones” (from which came the Spanish version vascos, and the French version Basque). But the Basque’s name for themselves is Euskaldunak, which means one who speaks Euskara or the Basque language. It is a unique language in the world today, with no known connection with any other language and older than Spanish or French (since both those languages derived later from the Latin of the Romans). This mystery people found their way to the Americas since the time of Columbus. Closer to our own time, with the Gold Rush in California, another wave of immigration began to the American West. These early Basques moved into ranching, and then transitioned into the sheep industry which served as a conduit for further immigration into the 20th century. Today there are few Basques involved with the sheep business, but a vibrant cultural community was firmly established that endures today. The Basque-American community of Southern California has firmly established institutions, that includes social organizations (the Southern California Basque Club is 70 years old and the Chino Basque Club is coming on 50 years) that coordinate consistent cultural events. Another key element, however, that has served to sustain the community through the generations is the Christian faith. Most Basque families maintain a faith connection, and we have some of those families here at Ontario Christian. Being Basque means being American. Being Basque means being Christian. q
Basques are known as the “mystery people” of western Europe because there are more questions than answers about these people, regarding their origins and their unique language.

I Want to Do a Beautiful Work by Frances J. Roberts You are mine says the Lord. You are not your own. With a very great price I have purchased you unto Myself. I am not dismayed that you do not comprehend, but say to you, that if you simply listen to Me, I will reveal to you more fully, and then you will know more clearly how vital you are in My purpose. There is work to be done and I need you as a vessel through which to work. I want to do a beautiful work. I need an individual to use which is not only available and suitable, but one who loves Me in such a way as to enhance My creation. I desire not the kind of loyalty a soldier gives to his country, but a dedicated devotion of the type of love more like that which a mother feels toward her unborn child. There will be inconveniences to be born, self-pleasing to be laid aside, sacrifices and pain, but what a blessed reward I have in store! Yes, in store for you, if you are able to let me use you in the way which I desire to do. You are not unworthy; you are not unprepared. You have no reason to hold back unless it be that your love for Me is too small. If this is your only hindrance, draw closer to Me, and I will pour My love upon you and thereby your affection for Me will be deepened and perfected. Lo, I wait for you. Come to Me. I want to do a beautiful work!

OC ANNUAL REPORT c 2017
High School Report Tim Hoekstra, High School Principal At Ontario Christian High School, we are continually Growing Christian Leaders. How this happens includes: Identifying a passion you see growing in a student, a word of encouragement after a tough day, a favorite verse for the day, sharing a college acceptance celebration. Experiences like these are daily occurrences on our campus. Our mission is to provide Biblically based education for the children of Christian parents. Our focus is to equip them with the vision and skills to engage all relationships and culture under the authority of Jesus Christ. Ontario Christian’s class of 2016 graduated in June and over ninety-five percent of them went on to college to continue their education. We added Art History and English Language and Composition to our Advanced Placement offerings for a total of ten AP courses. We continue to strive for excellence in how to prepare students for the academic challenges they will face in college. Graduate surveys of our most recent graduates indicate that they believe they were well prepared for college level coursework. Over ninety percent of our 2015 graduates responded that they were glad they attended Ontario Christian for their high school education.
Tim Hoekstra
In January of 2017 we offered our inaugural Interim experience. This program allowed teachers and students to both live out and explore their passions in a less traditional school setting. Students participated in three different kinds of experiences including courses taught by OC teachers, courses taught by outside instructors from the OCS school community, and off-campus job shadow opportunities. We believe these Interim experiences serve to nurture students to grow in knowledge, conviction, and maturity as stated in our mission statement. Did you know that OCHS has: 1. Ten AP classes and three Honors courses included in a strong college preparatory academic program. 2. OCHS teachers meet weekly in Professional Learning Communities where they look at best teaching practices and student data. All to collaborate and improve their teaching strategies and improve student achievement. 3. Outstanding graduates who are accepted at prestigious colleges all over the United States. The class of 2017 has students accepted at Cornell and the US Coast Guard Academy. 4. Awesome teachers who love and care for their students. 5. Strong athletic programs competing in the Ambassador League which is one of the best small school leagues in California. Our teams compete against schools with Division I athletes every year. 6. The best food of any school provided by JoAnn Vander Meulen and the Knights’ Corner Kitchen. 7. Many, many opportunities for students to get involved and grow academically, personally, and spiritually. Ontario Christian continues to offer a variety of clubs that meet on and off campus planning activities for students both during and outside the school day. We appreciate our Mom’s In Prayer, parents, and grandparents for their continued prayers on behalf of the students and staff of Ontario Christian High School. We know that your prayers make a difference! q

Middle School Report Bob De Groot, Middle School Principal
Ontario Christian Middle School continues to be richly blessed! We don’t take that for granted and intentionally show our gratitude by being a blessing to others.
Bob DeGroot

We recently took some time to celebrate those blessings. Here are some examples of the excellent things happening on our campus. We recently aligned our curriculum to the College Readiness Standards. Our 1-1 Chromebook program continues to thrive and expand. We continue to look at support systems to help us use student data to inform teacher instruction, which increases the level at which we are meeting our students’ needs. This moves us towards a 21st century focus, while maintaining our deep roots and commitment to our Reformed tradition. We’ve added some 21st century exploratories… e.g. Advanced Engineering, 3D Printing, and Makerspace. Our Peer Tutoring exploratory does an excellent job of supporting the K-6 Response to Intervention Program.
Ontario christian schools
Our J-Term during January saw our students involved in a variety of excellent exploratory options. Adding an Algebra class to our 7th grade curriculum and a Geometry class to our 8th grade curriculum provides greater options for our more advanced math students. Ministering to a growing number of I-20 students remains a high priority. Our Yearbook Club now helps our sponsor put that important work together. Increasing staff and student awareness to potential emergencies on campus has been a priority with our ALICE training. Our high standards for academics and the responsibility and communication that entails from students, parents, and teachers is a cause for celebration. Our Professional Learning Teams continue their excellent work as they analyze student data and plan for student improvement. Our SIP Math and Reading departments continue to be the best there is! As a Christian school, we are blessed to be able to target the whole student and not just focus on core curriculum. Our PE, Spanish, Computer, and Arts departments remain strong and effective. Our choir and band concerts are consistently outstanding examples of our students using their God-given talents to glorify Him. The support
OC ANNUAL REPORT c 2017
services we offer, including SIP, study skills and math help exploratories, minister to each student where they are in their academic journey. The Middle School Advisement groups that meet four times per week continue to be the backbone of our ministry to students. In addition to excellent times of devotions and prayer, this is a time for teachers to connect directly to students and look for ways to advocate for them. “Curriculum” for this time includes our Sex Ed. units, anti-bullying units, a detailed look at media, a time to have some intramurals, a time for guided study… just to name a few! In addition to our advisement groups, time is intentionally built into our daily schedule for each grade-level group of core teachers to meet and plan. This is a huge blessing and one our excellent teachers don’t take for granted. Included in this meeting time is an opportunity to address tech integration – a way to stay ahead of the technology curve. Our students each have their own Chromebook and we want that blessing to be used effectively.
The most important asset we have at Ontario Christian Middle School is our teachers. Not only are they excellent, they do a fantastic job of holding our students accountable for their work and integrity, setting high standards for our students. Helping our students meet those expectations is their ministry and desire. In addition to our excellent, upbeat, and contemporary chapels each week, our continued support for two Compassion International kids, the service days and projects throughout the year, our 8th grade spiritual retreat, our enthusiastic and hard-working Student Council, and our excellent athletic program, there continues to be some intentional efforts made by our students and staff toward being the blessing to others God wants us to be. As you can see, we’ve been blessed at OCMS! It is exciting to be part of a team that intentionally ministers to the whole kid, the whole time, and with our whole heart. God is good! q

OC ANNUAL REPORT c 2017
Elementary School Report Mike Wiersma, Elementary School Principal
Each year is unique and special at Ontario Christian. Each year God has something new and exciting planned for His school. We see the enthusiasm and joy for learning and play when we welcome a new kindergarten class. We rejoice that God continues to bring families to OC as we welcome new and returning students each fall. This year, 2016 – 2017, is no exception; God has been moving among our campus, making a difference in the lives of children and their families. Below are some stories and examples of the ways God is being made famous through the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and families who sacrifice greatly to allow Ontario Christian to walk beside them as we raise God’s children to see His Sovereignty in all subject areas. Praise God that we welcomed over 60 brand new families to the Ontario Christian family this year in grades K - 6. Thank you for your continued sacrifice to send your kids to Ontario Christian. This year we have four healthy sections of kindergarten, first, and third grades. Praise God that we welcomed over 60 brand new families to the Ontario Christian family this year in grades K - 6, says Principal Mike Wiersma.
Our commitment to the academic growth of each student remains a top priority as we align our curriculum to 21st century skills as well as implement a response to intervention (RtI) model into our schedule. This enables our teachers to intentionally group students to differentiate their instruction and meet individual needs. The Ontario Christian family expanded this year when we opened our first ever special education program. The inaugural class consists of nine students with mild to moderate learning needs, each uniquely and wonderfully made in the image of God. It is exciting to see the learning opportunities of all students enhanced when they learn side by side with children who learn differently. God is made famous when we serve all of His children well. We continue to enhance the intersections between faith and learning through daily scripture based devotionals, Bible classes, and chapel. Each subject is an opportunity to learn of the majesty of Jesus Christ. God is ruling the throne and our students are learning to examine all areas of their learning and life in light of God’s desires for them. Passing our faith to the next generation requires a community of believers praying the Holy Spirit into the lives of children. Thank you for allowing OC to partner with you in this area. We are all created unique with various gifts and talents; for some that is most demonstrated through art, music, writing, physical education, math, language, athletics, or a wonderful blending of several different areas. Our specials programs remain a hallmark of our commitment to teach to the whole child, providing them the opportunities to use all their gifts as an offering to God. q

Preschool Report Jane Reichert, Preschool Director
The OC Preschool and Jr. K (Transitional Kindergarten) has had a very busy year in 2016-17! The enrollment has hit record levels of 175 children. There is a waiting list of more than 50 children. For the first time, we are filling the full preschool building. God has blessed us with many wonderful families. Eventful days are filled with field trips to the Pumpkin Patch at Amy’s Farm. We enjoyed performing the Christmas Program; “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. We are looking forward to Grandparents Teas and our Spring Program and Open House. Of course it snowed once again in January for the preschoolers to play. We thank our OCPA for helping us out with the cost of the snow. We added some extra security to the front of the preschool. There is a central check in and sign in area in the front preschool building lobby. Fences have been added to the front of the building. Parents enter through the front preschool lobby doors, sign in and go out the added doors behind the fences and continue to their child’s classrooms. This is a more secure area that regulates those who are coming and going onto the preschool campus. Let us celebrate and pray that God will bless us with some wonderful new families to Ontario Christian School! God has richly blessed this school, the families and staff involved with OCS. To God be the glory! q Jane Reichert

OC ANNUAL REPORT c 2017
Admissions and Development Report by Chanin Zaragoza, Director of Advancement
“Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good. His love endures forever.” – Psalm 136:1 Much of the joy from being the Director of Advancement is speaking and visiting with OC families and donors; to hear stories of how Ontario Christian Schools has impacted their lives is the greatest blessing of my job. The most common feedback parents share is that they know their children are loved and valued, they know their children are safe on campus and that they are taught from a Biblical perspective. One parent, Danielle Jorgenson said, “The benefits and blessings we have experienced at OC have long since surpassed any of our expectations”. That is our goal here as teachers, staff and administrators. We are thankful that the Lord continues to send new families. It is equally wonderful to see our OC families dedicated to welcoming these new families into our community. As you find ways to get involved, you will see that you are part of what makes OC so special. I am also humbled by the stories I hear from donors. They have given and continue to give so generously of their time and resources. They share that by their giving, they are the ones who are blessed. How faithful are God’s people to the mission of “Growing Christian Leaders”. Thank you to our financial supporters for making such an impact in so many lives. Chanin Zaragoza
14
By providing Christian education, showing love to others and shining Christ’s light, our hope is that we are making a positive difference in our communities. What an honor and privilege it is to be a part of this mission. We give thanks to God, our Father, for his continued faithfulness to OC. q

OC ANNUAL REPORT c 2017
Security Report Darin Slocum, Systems Administrator
Since the beginning of this school year, there have been significant changes to security across Ontario Christian: • We now have over 60 video cameras live, watching and recording the campuses. • Every member of the faculty and staff has a 2-way radio to aid in any emergency communications. • The preschool entry has been completely remodeled to provide far better security. • The two entrances to the elementary school now have more secure gating to prohibit trespassing and enhance the safety of the school. • We have a group of parents that are present at each elementary campus event to provide safety for the faculty, students and parents. (A special “thank you” to those who have given generously of your time to be a part of this effort!). • The business office has been redesigned to allow for greater protection of staff and data. Once completed, the high school office will be remodeled next.
Darin Slocum
But perhaps the most significant change has also been the most dramatic. During the Thanksgiving break, all of us went through active shooter training, including drills simulating how to deal with various scenarios of an active shooter on campus. The thought of this happening at our school is truly abhorrent but the trust given to us by each OC parent calls for us to be diligent and prepared. The training lasted 4 hours with 1.5 hours dedicated to reinforcing the online teaching we had already received and the final 2.5 hours dedicated to different scenarios. It was a time of hands-on learning and practical measures as we learned some new methods of protecting ourselves and our students. The training was both potent and sobering. Yet it was also a time to come together realizing that the preparations we were making were for the betterment of our entire community—a necessary measure in our society today. q

The Board of Trustees are all members of churches with a Reformed perspective. Ontario Christian School was founded by Reformed churches and continues to provide for the future of the organization by selecting board members from these churches. The Board of Trustees is pleased that Ontario Christian has a student body that comes from over 200 churches. It is a tremendous blessing to have such a wonderful diversity of Christians involved in the life of Ontario Christian. We are very appreciative of the time and wisdom that you have invested and would like to thank you for all the dedication and years of service to Ontario Christian Schools.

by Bernie Gabrielse, Boosters President Does everyone know Gary Conrad? Gary has been an active member of the OC Boosters Club for nearly 4 years. He is a man of action and he loves OC’s athletic program. His daughter graduated from Ontario Christian and his son is a senior. Gary wants to see our club grow, so he wants YOU to join our club.

Keeping Pace with Your OC Athletic Boosters Club
Gary Conrad
Beginning January 1, 2017, Gary Conrad will take over as president of Boosters. It has been a privilege to serve as Boosters Club president and I will continue to be an active member of our club. We have had a smooth transition as Gary moves into the Boosters White House.
Save The Date!
Please give Gary the support he needs by joining our club, and being a part of the best Boosters Club around. We have members who are parents of OC students, but we also have members that have been supporting Ontario Christian for a long time and simply love the program. Gary’s first big job will be chairing the 24th Annual OC Boosters Golf Classic; he will have his hands full as we are looking at making some changes. Please mark your calendar for this huge event which will take place on May 19, 2017. As soon as the golf tournament is over we will begin working on the 2017 athletic program and all school directory. We will need the support of the entire OC community for these projects. Our club continues to meet every month, typically on the 4th Monday in the high school library. We usually have visits from the coaches, who come to report on their teams and answer general questions that we might have. It’s really a fun time. Ontario Christian has awesome, Christian coaches that teach Christian values through athletics. It’s great to hear from them. We also get full reports from the middle school and high school athletic directors, which is where we get our requests for things that different teams might need. We recently bought a basketball shooting machine, as well as some weights for the weight room, but our main goal is to raise money to enhance the athletic facilities at Ontario Christian. It is important to note that our Boosters Club supports all sports at OC middle school and high school. Often people think we only support football, but we help where needed. If you are a middle school parent, you will see a nice baseball field at the middle school and a scoreboard, both put up by our Boosters Club. We also help all sports at the high school when they need special items not covered in their team budget. So friends of OC, when looking for a way to pitch in and help, OC Boosters is a great place to turn to. Remember, we hold our monthly Boosters Club meeting every 4th Monday of each month in our high school library. We look forward to seeing you at our next Boosters Club meeting. There is nothing like being an OC Booster! q
