Ways to Maximize Your Outdoor Space
Use these tips to transform your backyard into a relaxing oasis. By Francia Fusik
I
s it time to update your outdoor space? Make the most of every inch of the outside of your home with these tips.
Plan with the Space in Mind
First, determine what you will be using your outdoor area for most. Do you want to entertain? Will it be more of a children’s play area? Would you prefer it to be an outdoor oasis for rest and relaxation? Once you determine the purpose of the space, it’s time to plan. Measure the entire area, factoring in windows, sliding glass doors and other small nooks. Don’t forget to take large, grassy areas into consideration. You can transform the backyard in a number of ways and make it just as beautiful as the patio.
Select the Right Furniture
Any furniture you include in your outdoor space should be durable to stand up to Florida’s unpredictable weather. Think Teak wood, all-weather wicker or aluminum for the framing

and textilene fabric, which is waterproof and fade resistant, for seating. When arranging the furniture, consider a grouping of chairs instead of a sofa. Taking this route not only allows for more seating but also versatility. You can arrange and rearrange according to the needs of your guests, creating an open space that encourages conversation. Chairs also won’t block the view from the inside as couches might do. If you would prefer to use your outdoor space for relaxation, consider an ottoman instead of a cocktail table so you can kick your feet up in a more comfortable way. Then include an end table between the chairs for drinks.
Accessorize the Way You Would Inside
When accessorizing, it’s important to connect the inside of your home with the outside. Include an outdoor rug, outdoor pillows and art that blends with your indoor decor to create a seamless transition from the inside out. This will provide a flow and harmony
to both spaces. If you can, include one or two potted plants to balance the area, using colored ceramic pots if you need to add a pop of color.
Don’t Make These Areas an Afterthought
The pool is just as important as any other part of your outdoor space. In the very least, include some chaise lounge chairs. Consider a small outdoor bed instead if you have the space, especially if you have an amazing view. A swing chair with a base or a swing chair that you can hang from your ceiling are also solid choices. Add a water fountain accessory to the pool area for a stunning effect. If you don’t have a pool, you can make your backyard area just as grand with manicured landscaping and different areas such as a fire pit, a Jacuzzi tub or a fireplace. Large, grassy areas can benefit from a small putt-putt course, which is also a fun way to entertain guests. The possibilities are endless.

hen a child walks into a classroom at Foundation Academy (FA), they walk into an extension of their home. The love and dedication that the teachers and administrators have for their students shows in the high level of care and instruction provided day in and day out. FA is a PreK3 through 12th grade private, Christ-centered college preparatory school that was founded in 1958 as a ministry of Winter Garden’s First Baptist Church. It has grown to include three campuses, including the brand new FA Lakeside campus located at Family Church (formerly First Baptist Church Windermere Lakeside).
The FA Experience
The student experience at all FA campuses is made up of four cornerstones of building a foundation for life: faith, academics, fine arts and athletics. The school is accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and AdvancED. Through a Christ-centered education, which includes weekly chapel as well as music, visual arts, technology and athletic programs, students can realize their God-given potential while developing academically, spiritually, physically and socially.
What to Expect at FA Lakeside
Easily accessible from Horizon West, Hamlin and the surrounding Windermere areas, the 40-acre Lakeside campus features a large indoor auditorium, a school office, an enrichment classroom, two soccer fields, two outdoor playgrounds and a picnic area. In addition to learning valuable life skills in subjects such as math, science, social studies and more, a school garden provides a seed-to-table experience. The time spent caring for the garden and learning about the process blossoms into both a tangible product and life lessons such as responsibility and self-confidence. Building relationships is important at FA. At this stage, students are leaving their homes for the first time. FA opens their world and space to provide families with time to adjust and grow at a manageable level. Amanda Donaho, the Lakeside campus principal, notes that the smaller class size (just one teacher for every 16 students) provides an even greater opportunity to become a family. “This family experience helps to make the transition into Kindergarten easier for both students and parents,” she says. “When parents know their child is loved and cared for each day, it provides peace of mind.” Additionally, the Lakeside Campus offers complimentary before-school care

beginning at 7:30 a.m. as well as several field trip opportunities through the year. “There are so many reasons we absolutely fell in love with this school,” the Ogeerally family says. “From feeling as though this is our extended family, to growing our daughter’s joy of learning, to the sense of security and love shown in a Christ-centered environment — all of these reasons have made our decision to send our children to FA Lakeside one of the best we’ve ever made.” Foundation Academy is more than a stop along the way in the educational process; it is an experience in learning that lasts a lifetime and beyond.

his summer’s family vacation is going to look a little bit different. Flights to far-off destinations will be replaced by staycations and road trips. We’ve come up with two routes for the ultimate Florida road trip that can include both beach stops and museum visits. Just be sure to call ahead before you hit the road so you can map out which stops are currently open to visitors as well as any new protocols for entry, including advance reservations, mask requirements and sanitation guidelines for the facility and its guests.
The West Coast Crawl
Florida’s Gulf Coast is home to some of the country’s most beautiful beaches with its crystal clear water and sugar white sand. The stretch of I-75 south from Tampa to Fort Myers is also dotted with many museums to add an educational element to your weekend getaway. First, the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg features a collection of more than 2,100 works by Salvador Dali that represent each moment of his career housed in a building as unique
as his art. The museum hosts events for all ages, from story time and activities for kids to yoga mornings and wine nights for adults. The Dali Museum Avant-garden features local vegetation, a grotto and a Mathematical Garden for students, among other elements. Next, stop in Sarasota to visit The Ringling. While this museum offers a look at The Greatest Show on Earth through a series of artifacts, guests can also explore modern works of art and collections from a variety of cultures. Visitors can tour Thomas Edison and Henry Ford’s winter homes as well as Edison’s Botanic Research Laboratory. The property boasts 20 acres of botanical gardens, nine historic buildings and the Edison Ford Museum, which features a collection of inventions, artifacts and special exhibits. Tip! Less than 10 miles before you exit I-4 for I-75, make a pit stop at exit 17 to visit Dinosaur World. There, you can explore a prehistoric museum filled with fossils and animatronics, participate in interactive shows, play at the dinosaur-themed playground and more. It’s an exciting way to start your west coast crawl.
The East Coast Crawl
Orlando residents are used to taking day trips to Cocoa Beach to play in the waves and soak up some sun. Go a step further and go on a museum crawl up the east coast. As you travel north on I-95, the first stop is the Daytona International Speedway. This popular racing site hosts three tours that are filled on a first-come, first-served basis: Speedway, All-Access and VIP. Each tour includes access to the Motorsports Hall

of Fame of America, which showcases displays for sports cars, motorcycles, drag racing, powerboating and more. For those looking for more of a thrill, there are a variety of driving experiences available as well. Next up is the nation’s oldest city: St. Augustine. With so much history, just taking a walk around town is like exploring a museum. Flagler College, formerly Hotel Ponce de Leon, hosts a 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. tour daily, which explores the property’s past through its architecture. Then, discover the city’s maritime history (and maybe meet some ghosts) at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. Ghost tours are held at the lighthouse every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The last stop is the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Jack-
sonville. Take a docent-led tour to discover the 5,000 pieces of art that are housed in the museum, spanning from 2100 B.C. through the 21st century. The gardens were severely damaged during Hurricane Irma, so only the upper tier of each of the three gardens is open as the staff works to reconstruct them to what they were before the storm. Tip! While you can take I-4 east to I-95, consider starting off on SR528 to Cocoa Beach instead to launch into your east coast crawl with a stop at Kennedy Space Center. A daily admission ticket includes a bus tour of the facility as well as access to a variety of attractions, shows and exhibits. There are also many special tours and experiences that can be added on for an extra fee.

Tips for Summer Safety
Practice these tips to keep you and your family safe this summer.

hen you’re on vacation it’s easy to forget that you are not immune to accident, injury or illness. You’re busy having fun with loved ones. So why would you even think something bad could happen? Here, we discuss five things to do to make sure your vacation is both fun and safe this summer. 1. Don’t drink and drive. This seems like a no-brainer. Of course you take an Uber or Lyft when you go out with plans to consume alcohol. However, this doesn’t only refer to driving a car. Don’t even think about operating any type of vehicle when you’re under the influence, including boats or other types of watercraft, scooters, golf carts and even bicycles. 2. vomiting, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache and fainting. While you can relieve these symptoms by moving to a cool place, loosening clothes, sipping water or putting cool, wet cloths on your body, you should seek medical attention immediately if you’re throwing up, if your symptoms worsen or if they last longer than an hour. Individuals experiencing heat stroke have a body temperature of 103ºF or higher; hot, red, dry or damp skin; a fast, strong pulse; headache, dizziness and nausea; confusion; and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is a medical emergency, so call 9-1-1 immediately. While waiting for medical professionals to arrive, move the person to a cooler place and help lower their temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath. Never give someone with heat stroke anything to drink. 3. Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to and know the difference between beach warning flags so you don’t enter the water during dangerous conditions.

These tragedies can be prevented simply by having at least one adult on water duty at all times. 5. S eek shelter during thunderstorms. According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes the U.S. about 25 million times a year. It kills an average of 47 people in the U.S. each year and severely injures hundreds more. You should go inside as soon as you hear thunder, as the National Weather Service notes that many lightning deaths occur ahead of storms before any rain arrives or after storms seem to have passed and the rain has ended.

Are You Covered? What you need to know about your homeowners insurance policy to ensure you’re covered in the event of a burglary. By Michael B. Brehne, Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne, P.A
I
magine packing your cooler, towels and sunscreen into the family SUV to take the kiddos to the beach. You plan to leave early and come back after a sunset dinner overlooking the water. Imagine now that somebody saw you leave, knew you were leaving or just rang the doorbell and peeked in a window to find out you were gone. What an opportunity! They go around back, break a small window, unlock your door and now have full, unfettered access to all of your personal belongings and household items. It doesn’t take long to start stuffing a pillowcase full of your jewelry, family heirlooms, cash and collectibles. Because time is of the essence and neatness doesn’t count, they cause quite a bit of damage when pillaging your household. Imagine the feelings of helplessness and vulnerability that would overcome you upon returning from your relaxing time away. Call the police? Absolutely. But what next? Most standard homeowners insurance policies will insure you against vandalism and theft. This means you will be reimbursed, subject to a deductible, for the physical damage to your dwelling, including doors, walls, floors, counters, cabinets and the personal property that was taken or destroyed. Your reimbursement depends on your coverage and the policy terms and conditions. When selecting homeowners insurance coverage, you will be offered replacement value (current market price of the item) or actual cash
value (the price someone would pay for the used item) reimbursement terms. Some policies will pay you actual cash value immediately then pay you the difference between that amount and replacement value, but only when you replace the item. Between the two choices, I recommend replacement value always. Keep in mind there are limits. The most any insurance company will pay for your loss is the amount shown on the declaration page under personal property coverage. It’s up to you to decide how much coverage to purchase. I recommend thinking about how much it would cost to put your house back the way it was if it were emptied out. But, as in all insurance cases, there are limitations and exceptions. For instance, jewelry is usually limited to a total amount and single item amount.
Some policies may have a $5,000 maximum for all your jewelry and of that $5,000, the most they will pay for any one item is $2,500 then $2,500 toward the rest. Check your declaration page to see what limitations are placed on personal property. If you own collections worth more than the maximum reimbursement amount, ask your insurance agent for a rider policy that specifies each item to be insured, the replacement value based on an appraisal, the terms and conditions for reimbursement and a premium for the total. While nothing can replace the feeling of loss and vulnerability, the proper insurance can at least replace your lost items and repair the home damage. For a free policy review or consultation after a loss, call our office so we can help you navigate the process.

Is it a Good Time to Buy? Find out why now is the perfect time for buyers to purchase a home in the Orlando real estate market.
By Gonzalo Senior, IRM Investments, Real Estate & Management
H
ome ownership is a dream that has seemed out of reach for many during the COVID-19 pandemic, as uncertainty has led the way in many aspects of life. However, now is actually a prime time to purchase a home. I’ll tell you why. As of June 6, the realtor.com Housing Recovery Index showed that the U.S. housing market continues to recover despite the global pandemic. This is mostly due to low mortgage interest rates, which are consistently hovering around the 2.5% to 3.8% range. At the current rate, buyers would be paying

just over $400 per month for every $100,000 borrowed on a 30-year fixed mortgage. With a 15-year fixed mortgage, buyers would pay close to $700 per month for every $100,000 borrowed. Both options offer huge savings over this time last year, providing home buyers with the opportunity to save thousands of dollars through the life of the loan. Mortgage rates can be influenced by a variety of factors, from politics and world events to economic activity, particularly inflation. While home prices have remained level and inventory low in the Orlando market, the current real estate market environment is great for potential buyers to make a deal with a rate that works for them down the road. Doug Duncan, the senior vice president and chief economist at Fannie Mae says, “Low mortgage rates have helped cushion some of the impact of the pandemic on con-
sumer sentiment regarding whether it’s a good time to buy, which picked back up this month to late2018 levels.” Potential buyers are seeing this in the numbers as well. According to the Fannie Mae Home Purchase Sentiment Index, consumers are reporting a more optimistic view of home buying conditions. Fewer consumers are reporting expectations that mortgage rates will go up in the next 12 months, down to 25% from 33% last month. This increased 10 percentage points on the HPSI scale. With consumer confidence high and interest rates low, now is the time to start the home buying process with an experienced realtor by your side. Once your realtor helps you find the home of your dreams, be sure to work quickly with a lender to lock in these low interest rates. In this market environment, home ownership will be a more affordable reality for many.

S
ummer time, when the livin’ is easy — no early mornings and no homework lingering over head! Lazy days of summer can cause a loss of academic skills for children. For some, it can be as much as two months of math and reading skills that slide away. This is known as the “summer drain.” To avoid this, here are five simple ideas to keep your children active and engaged throughout the summer.
1. Disguise learning as fun!
Every parent has tried to hide a vegetable for nutritional value during a meal or snack from time to time. Why not do the same for learning? Camps are available that can help keep your child’s brain engaged and the creative juices flowing as well as engage problem-solving skills, and many have gone virtual this year to keep local kids learning and engaged.
22
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2020
2. H elp your child discover a new passion!
Summer is a great time to learn something new. Learn to swim, ride a bike, paint or code. Engaging the brain in learning a new skill helps build problem-solving skills, resiliency and grit in an authentic learning environment.
3. Be creative!
Summer is the perfect time to let your child’s imagination run wild and stimulate creativity. Kids. gov provides resources for arts and crafts projects that will keep children engaged and their minds active while having fun. NGA Kids offers a variety of activities or projects from the National Gallery of Art, where kids can enjoy an animated musical adventure, take a tour through the sculpture garden and more.
4. Stay Active & Healthy!
In addition to academic risks, children can also be at an increased risk of weight gain during the summer months. Keep youth active outdoors and indoors for a ton of fun this summer.
5. Read, Read, Read!
Books can be magical in the fact that they can transport you to new places. Trips to a local book store, library or allowing your child to join a book subscription service will prove to be beneficial, as students tend to be more invested in a book they selfselect. Finding time to read together is a wonderful way to bond as a family and instill the love of learning with people they love. With these five tips plus limiting screen time during the summer, everyone will be able to enjoy the time off knowing their children will be ready for the fall.

Providing Hope to Children and Families in Need For children and teens without a safe, nurturing environment, the future can seem dark and uncertain. Foster parents provide a gift of a lifetime by opening their home and their hearts. Their ongoing caring commitment is critical for giving children and teens in need a chance at fulfilling their potential and enjoying a life of success. There is a great need for foster parents in the Central Florida area. Protecting Your Health, Now More Than Ever Just because we’re in the middle of a global pandemic, doesn’t mean that the need for normal health care services gets put on hold. Family members still get sick, and need yearly checkups, urgent care and emergency services just like always. We’ve partnered with AdventHealth to take a closer look at what they’re doing to keep patients safe while getting the care they need.
“Our number one priority is the health of our patients. That’s why we’ve worked hard to create the safest, health care environment possible, so you can get the medical care you need, when you need it. We are excited to welcome our patients back into our office.” Ramchandra Siram, MD AdventHealth Medical Group Family Medicine at Waterford Lakes
PRIMARY CARE FROM THE COMFORT OF HOME As we all know by now, social distancing is a key step to staying safe these days. And AdventHealth is offering a variety of ways to protect families in this manner. At the forefront is the use of virtual technology. You can use online tools to schedule primary care appointments, check in and out of in-person doctor visits and pay your bill. You can even schedule a virtual visit with a primary care provider on your phone or tablet. Virtual visits are video calls, where the provider can talk to you about your treatment plan, renew your prescriptions and review your test results — without you ever having to leave the safety of home. If you prefer to have an in-person visit with a doctor, they are taking extraordinary measures to protect you and your family while in their offices. Virtual waiting rooms are available that allow you to wait in your car until notified when it’s time to come into the building. You are then walked directly to the examination room instead of congregating in waiting rooms and standing in lines. All staff and visitors are provided a mask to wear while in their facilities and your temperature is checked before entering. Plus, all spaces are frequently sanitized for your protection.

Chairman, Department of Emergency Medicine, AdventHealth
Are ERs safe to come back to? “The Emergency Department staff is well-trained to deal with all infections. The number one priority is to keep patients safe. There are procedures in place that keep the environment sterile and germ free to protect our patients from infections. Hospitals have the most experience and practice stopping disease spread and can safely treat patients with any medical or surgical problem during this pandemic.”
TYPICAL REASONS TO VISIT THE ER • • • • •
Q & A with Regan A. Schwartz, MD
Why is it important to not delay reaching out to the ER if you are having a serious medical emergency? “Many medical conditions need to be treated early to prevent permanent damage. Patients that present to the ER with early signs of a stroke can receive medications that can prevent damage to the brain. Similarly, patients that present with early signs of heart disease can be treated to prevent them from getting a heart attack or permanent damage to the heart. Symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, imbalance, difficulty speaking or walking, and dizziness can be signs of serious illnesses that need to be treated immediately. Pain in the abdomen may be something that requires urgent surgery.” What can you expect when coming to our ERs now? “All staff, patients and visitors are screened for fevers prior to entering the ER. Everyone is provided a mask before entering the ER. All the ER staff are trained to keep patients separated to protect them from any infection. There are visitor restrictions in place to limit the number of people in the ER. Above all, we care about our patients and will take the utmost precautions to keep you safe and healthy.”

Solutions for a Pain-Free Life Through a variety of regenerative medicine treatments, Phoenix Integrated Medical Center helps patients get back to their life.
I
n the blink of an eye, one experience can make a lasting impression on your life. Several years ago, Steve Gunter was riding his bike when he was hit with a pole that was extending from the back of a truck. Its impact knocked him about 20 feet off his bike, causing injury to his shoulder and neck. He immediately went to see Dr. Troy Yeomans, who put him on a treatment plan that combined chiropractic care with non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. This therapy gently stretches the spine to relieve pressure on the affected spinal discs. Gunter visited Phoenix Integrated Medical Center several times a week initially before shifting to weekly treatments as he progressed. “He is, without question, the very best chiropractor I’ve had,” Gunter says. “He diagnoses thoroughly and has the right touch. He fixed me so well I don’t even need to go back.” Dr. Yeomans has spent years researching other integrative methods that help patients who have experienced an injury or pain that comes with aging. Ruth Campbell travels from Clermont for viscosupplementation on her knee. She remembers feeling immediate relief after the first treatment.
“It gives me the opportunity to walk more, and I feel good with it,” Campbell says. “Dr. Yeomans is just a fine doctor.” She continues to receive the treatment on an as-needed basis, usually with several years in between. During the viscosupplementation procedure, hyaluronate is injected into the knee to stimulate the cells so they create better lubrication fluid to cushion the joint. Dr. Yeomans believes pain isn’t something that you have to experience on a daily basis. Visit PhoenixIMC.com to schedule an appointment and get back to a pain-free life.
Meet Dr. Troy Yeomans As a Winter Park native, Dr. Troy Yeomans is committed to the wellness of his patients and his community. The Edgewater High School alum’s interest in sports followed him through college and into adulthood, and like many other athletes, he experienced an unexpected injury. During a game of softball, the familiar motion of picking up a ground ball caused a herniated disc in his back. He traveled to a doctor who worked with him on a treatment plan that included spinal decompression therapy and class IV laser therapy, a plan that he credits with completely healing him without surgical intervention. “I knew, at that point, that I needed to be able to treat my patients the way that I would treat myself,” Dr. Yeomans says. He has been practicing in Central Florida for 20 years. He started Phoenix Integrated Medical Center as a metaphor for his life, rebirth in his practice and a symbol for how he wants his patients to feel. He believes that nobody should live in pain and everybody should take their health very seriously. The NBA Arrives in
Orlando Starting this month, the NBA’s season will resume at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Here’s what you can expect. By Nick Moore
T
his month, the NBA’s 2019-20 season resumes and concludes at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, with games beginning on July 30. If necessary, Game 7 of the NBA Finals will occur no later than Oct. 12. While fans won’t be in attendance, games will be televised.
Why Orlando?
State and local officials have always prioritized the importance of big sporting events as a fabric of our community. As is often the case, Orlando was among the first cities rumored to host the resumption of the NBA. Las Vegas was also considered as a host site for Western Conference teams. Disney’s relationship with the NBA through its ownership of ESPN/ABC gave Orlando an extreme advantage for hosting events of this magnitude.
How it Will Work
The league has invited 22 of 30 teams — nine from the Eastern Conference and 13 from the Western Conference. Teams six and a half games out of the playoffs prior to the suspension of play will not attend. Each of the 22 teams will play eight games for playoff seeding. If at the end of the eight games, the ninth seed, which is typically eliminated from playoff consideration at season’s end, is within four games of the number eight
32
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2020
seed, there will be a play-in tournament to decide who earns the final playoff spots in each conference.
What it Means for the Magic
Currently the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, the Magic are five and a half games ahead of the Washington Wizards. If the Wizards can’t make up at least one and a half games in the standings, the Magic will represent the Eastern Conference as the eighth seed. There is still hope for the Magic to earn the seventh seed, as they sit just one half of a game behind the current seventh seed, the Brooklyn Nets.
Playoff Structure
The playoff format will remain the same as it has in prior years, with teams competing in a best-of-seven series for all rounds. As of press time, it was still unclear if and how higher-seeded teams would be rewarded with an alternative to the typical home-court advantage. However, teams that make it through the first round can reserve up to 17 rooms for guests of players.
What it Will Look Like
The NBA has outlined its health and safety protocols in a 113page handbook. For players, this includes self-isolation upon arrival
and a requirement of two negative COVID-19 tests at least 24 hours apart before they can access the campus. They also have the option of wearing a proximity alarm that notifies them if they’re within 6 feet of someone else who’s wearing one (something that team and league staff are required to wear). Off the court, teams are split between three deluxe Disney resorts — Gran Destino, Grand Floridian and Yacht Club — based on their standings. And, yes, the Magic will be required to stay within the Disney bubble, too. Players will have access to entertainment and recreational activities on campus and can socialize as long as they’re following social distancing protocol.

Turn a Cocktail
Into a Mocktail How to put a non-alcoholic twist on your favorite poolside beverage.
By Lyndsay Fogarty
I
t’s summertime, and there’s nothing like sipping on a cool, refreshing drink poolside. Make one for the adults then turn it into a mocktail for the kiddos so everyone can enjoy a taste of summer. When you think about the cocktails that are best savored poolside or while lounging on the beach, fruity drinks probably come to mind. The best part about these cocktails is that they’re easy to turn into mocktails for the people in your life who can’t or just aren’t interested in drinking alcohol. That includes the kids, too, so everyone can get in on the fun. Frozen drinks are typically the go-to for mocktails. Pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris are just like smoothies when you omit the alcohol. You can even go all out by mixing the two together for an alcohol-

free Miami Vice. Similarly, when you make a mudslide without the vodka, Kahlua and Bailey’s, you’re left with a chocolate shake. Be sure to decorate the glassware with a rim of sugar for virgin pina coladas and daiquiris and a swirl of chocolate for virgin mudslides to make them feel like true mocktails. Frozen may be the usual route, but cocktails served on the rocks can work just as well. Mixers for these types of cocktails typically include a mixture of fruit juices or a combination of club soda and flavored simple syrup. While these sweet concoctions taste great when you include vodka, tequila or your favorite liquor, they can stand on their own as a refreshing mocktail without them. The possibilities for turning your favorite cocktail into a mocktail are endless.
Watermelon Paloma Courtesy of the Watermelon Board Serves 2 Cling to summer just a little bit longer with this refreshing, watermelonbased cocktail. Make it a mocktail by adding extra juice or club soda to replace the tequila. INGREDIENTS: • 3 ounces silver tequila • 1/4 cup grapefruit juice • 1/2 cup cubed watermelon • 1 cup watermelon juice, frozen in ice cube tray (optional) • 2 teaspoons agave nectar • 1 tablespoon lime juice • Varied amount club soda • Varied amount kosher salt • Sprigs mint or basil for garnish •T wo wedges watermelon for garnish DIRECTIONS: Pour a generous amount of salt on a small plate. Line the rims of two glasses with lime juice and gently dip the rims into the salt. Combine the silver tequila, grapefruit juice, watermelon and agave in a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to mash the watermelon with the rest of the ingredients. Add ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Carefully add ice cubes of choice to the glass and, using a strainer, pour the tequila mixture over the ice. Top with club soda and garnish with mint or basil and a small watermelon wedge.

Celebrating Summer From nature parks to theme parks, the West Orange Chamber of Commerce shares ideas for things to do this summer. By Stina D’Uva, West Orange Chamber of Commerce COURTESY OF SEAWORLD® ORLANDO
T
he month of July, vacations and American pride go hand-in-hand. Just because these summer months are not the ordinary lazy, carefree days of summer, there is no reason that many of us cannot still celebrate and enjoy much-needed time off. The physical and economic environment may cause us to rethink more normal vacation plans, yet we’re resilient and creative. That, coupled with living in the wonderful region of West Orange surrounded by a beautiful state, affords us many opportunities. Even if we only have a few days off, healthy, safe and affordable options abound in our very own backyard. Keeping in mind the need to social distance and wear masks in public, we still have many options, including parks throughout our municipalities and Orange County.

We are fortunate to have two preserves as well: Oakland Nature Preserve and Tibet Butler Preserve. These allow us to explore old and natural Florida. There are also historic spots to be found in Ocoee, Oakland, Orlando, Windermere and Winter Garden. You can explore 19th century buildings, including a school house, town hall and other structures designated on the National Registry of Historic Places. We also have museums and miles and miles of recreational trails. For those wanting even more adventure, we have the best theme parks in the world: Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Orlando. These are only miles from our homes. We don’t have to fly or cruise to enjoy and experience the faraway lands that have
been created for us within their parks and resorts. We’re fortunate to have these amenities at our fingertips while other vacationers have to drive or fly to get here. Just let your imagination take you away and enjoy a staycation or a stay healthy vacation, which I call a “stealthcation.” Let us not forget, however, that the reason we have these choices is because of the freedom we enjoy as Americans. Some of us are more fortunate than others, and that’s why voting is important. On July 30, the chamber will once again host a political Hobnob and Straw Poll at Ocoee’s Lakeshore Center, sponsored by Orlando Health, Walt Disney World, Ocoee and the West Orange Political Alliance. Join us to learn about our local candidates, the people who have the potential for making decisions that will influence our daily lives. For more information, visit WOChamber.com. Stay healthy, stay safe, stay distanced, yet close to home!

Embrace Families
Hosts Graduation Parades
W
ith many milestones being put on hold amid the pandemic, Embrace Families wanted to make sure 40 youths in foster care received the recognition they deserved. On June 9, 16 and 17, the nonprofit agency overseeing foster care, adoption and child services in Central Florida hosted drive-by graduation parades in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. All students, who were honored with car honking, sign waving and “contactless” gift delivery, either graduated from high school, college or vocational school. According to the National Foster Youth Institute, approximately 50% of youth in foster care complete high school. However, young adults in foster care in Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties have a higher success
rate of completing high school and pursuing secondary education. More than 76% of young people ages 1822 under the care of Embrace Fami-
lies have earned a high school or equivalent degree. Congratulations to these students on their accomplishments!
Local Students Earn
Empowering Greatness Scholarship
S
tudents have faced obstacles through the COVID-19 pandemic, including loss of internships and job opportunities, leading to an increased need of financial support. Farah & Farah, a Florida and Georgia law firm, announced last month that three exceptional Orlando students are among the 20 recipients of the firm’s inaugural Empowering Greatness Scholarship Program. The students were selected for their outstanding academic success and community service and will receive a $5,000 scholarship to further their post-secondary education. The selected Orlando students include Evan Thompson of Evans High School, who is off to Harvard; Sarah Louis, who is currently attending University of Florida; and Darius Turner of South Lake High School. “The high cost of postsecondary education is one of 50
