Daci Lynne coming to Edmond The Edmond Historical Society and Museum presents the new exhibit, Darci Lynne’s Got Talent from Aug 13 thru Jan 30 2021. A virtual ribbon-cutting and live performance by Darci Lynne is Thursday, Aug 13, 2020 at 7:00 pm. Darci Lynne was just twelve when she won the NBC’s America’s Got Talent championship for her singing ventriloquist act. Incredibly, she’d only had a few years of lessons when she wowed the judges and won America’s heart. The Deer Creek student had gotten her start in 2014 by winning first place at the Edmond’s Got Talent competition. Now’s she’s a performing sensation, appearing on television shows and traveling around the county to sell-out crowds after having her own show in Las Vegas. Edmond Historical Society & Museum is proud to present America’s first-ever museum exhibit dedicated to Darci Lynne, a hometown hero. Artifacts featured include clothing from her television performances, her first practice puppets, tour posters, and scripts. Virtual Ribbon Cutting & Live Performance: As part of the show, viewers will see a video of Darci Lynne touring the new museum exhibit and sharing stories about the artifacts on display. Darci Lynne will then perform live for the audience, followed by a question and answer session. Make your reservation at edmondhistory.org or call 405-340-0078 to receive a Zoom invitation and password. Show cost: $20 each. Petunia Puppets will be available for sale at a special price of $35 (regularly $40).

LEARNING SOCCER AND LIFE SKILLS Summer Kids Painting with Pacas “Jude is in his 3rd season with Soccer Shots and he loves it! Jude was born 16 weeks premature and we were advised to keep him out of “daycare settings” until he was at least two. So, Soccer Shots was his first time being involved with a group of kids his age. The program and coaches are incredible! They treat Jude like he is the most important child in the world and Jude just adores being loved! Jude asks to go to soccer and see his coaches all the time. The program teaches him character traits, how to take turns and interact with peers, and soccer skills! I played soccer my whole life so I was beyond excited to start Jude at two years old. The coaches are so patient and they really get how kids at ages two and three can be so unpredictable, and they just roll with it! Jude has days where he really follows and listens, and days where he runs the field doing his own thing and everyone is ok with that! When he’s ready to be a part they’re right there welcoming him back to the group. This program has been just what Jude needed to give him time with other kids his age all while learning soccer and life skills! We are Soccer Shots’ biggest fan!” Traci A. (Soccer Shots Parent)

High Schooler Thrives at School for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders Tiffany Riddle says public school was always such a struggle for her son Drew, now 16. He was bullied, often became frustrated with his schoolwork and had a difficult time expressing his thoughts and feelings. Once Drew was diagnosed with ADHD and placed on the Autism spectrum, Tiffany and her husband Ronald knew something had to change. Though money was often tight — Tiffany is a dental assistant, and Ronald works at a collision center — they told each other they would do whatever it took to get Drew into a school where he could live up to his true potential. Enter in the Opportunity Scholarship Fund. Because of this scholarship granting organization, Drew’s parents are able to send him to Paths to Independence (PTI), a nonprofit, accredited private school in Bartlesville serving children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. “We are extremely grateful for the scholarship and to PTI for being an advocate for Drew,” she said. “He is thriving, expresses his emotions better and has truly blossomed.” Because of the global health crisis, Drew finished his junior year of high school online. Tiffany said he loved the Zoom calls where he could see his classmates, and he tried his best every day to help make the situation easier on his teachers. Drew also recently finished his first year at Tri-County Tech, where he participates in the culinary program.

Camp-in-Place #AtHomeArt: Abstract Art Game
Roll the dice with Camp Contemporary instructor Katelynn Noel Knick Camp-in-Place #AtHomeArt project engages movement, color and chance. Camp-in-Place #AtHomeArt projects from Camp Contemporary instructors and Youth and Family staff. Sponsored by SONIC Drive-In. Even during this time of physical distancing, playing games with friends is one of summer’s biggest perks. To help keep your kids engaged with art through play, today's Camp-inPlace #AtHomeArt project offers a fun way to connect with friends at a distance or virtually. The rules for today's Abstract Art Dice Game are simple. Using everyday household materials, this game engages movement and color for hours of entertainment. Roll the dice, and let's get started! Gather a variety of objects that can be used to paint with: leaves, sponges, sticks or whatever you can find. Materials • A workspace that can get messy • 1-2 sets of dice • Large sheets of paper • Paint (watercolor, acrylic or tempera) • Variety of objects to paint with: sticks, a ball, paint brushes, a sponge, feathers, a piece of fabric, cotton balls, crumpled pieces of paper, leaves or whatever you can find! • Cup of water • Paper towels • Piece of copy paper • Pen or pencil • Timer or smartphone timer Be sure to share your finished abstract painting using #AtHomeArt. Directions and rules As a group, come up with a set of rules for each die. One die will determine the object you paint with and the other one determines the style of mark that you will make. Assign specific objects and marks for each number on each die. For example: Object die • 1 = paintbrush • 2 = ball • 3 = feather And so on Mark-making die • 1 = zigzag • 2 = loop-de-loop • 3 = crosshatch And so on Write the rules down where everyone can see them easily. The group leader will set the timer for two minutes. The artists will each roll their dice and follow the numbers they roll
to see what object they will paint with and what mark they will make. Once time is up, each artist will stop and roll their dice again. Continue until everyone’s pages are full of colorful layers. As always, don't forget to share you unique abstract painting using #AtHomeArt! www.oklahomacontemporary.org

GOLDFISH SWIM SCHOOL - Edmond
Summer is fast-approaching, and usually involves day trips to the local pool, picnics in the park, and intense games of tag on the playground. Although this summer will play out a little differently this year, it won’t stop kids’ imagination from flowing. Pool days can happen in the backyard, picnics can be made for imaginary friends, and nature is one big playground to explore. Despite all the change, some things we know will stay the same: the weather will be hot, and kids love splashing around in the water any chance they get. To help prepare for a safe summer ahead, now is the perfect time to brush up on water safety tips for drowning prevention. Drowning remains the #1 cause of unintentional injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4, taking the lives of three children in the Unites States every day. Even during these unprecedented times, drowning prevention remains a top priority, as more than 70% of childhood drowning incidents occur at homes. 10 NW 146th St., Edmond, Oklahoma 73013 (405) 696-7500 www.goldfishswimschool.com/edmond

Dean McGee Eye Institute’s Specialist Provides Visual Exam for OKC Zoo’s Senior Chimp, Cindy
Last month, Cindy, the Oklahoma City Zoo’s oldest chimpanzee, was involved in an incident while outside in her habitat with her troop that resulted in her experiencing vision loss. The Zoo’s veterinary team performed an eye exam and after monitoring Cindy for a few days realized she was having significant challenges with her vision and consulted Dr. R. Michael Siatkowski, an ophthalmologist with Dean McGee Eye Institute, about performing a visual assessment on Cindy. Dr. Siatkowski performed a visual acuity test – that’s the same as reading an eye chart for humans – on Cindy at the Zoo’s Great EscApe habitat. Using Teller acuity cards designed for infants, young children and non-verbal humans, Dr. Siatkowski confirmed that Cindy’s vision had decreased in both eyes. Her vision is currently equivalent to a 3-month-old human infant. Cindy voluntarily participated in the entire exam thanks to the trust and bond she has with her caretakers through ongoing training.
Photo by Andrea Johnson At 52, Cindy is a geriatric animal and her caretakers have modified her daily routine to accommodate her diminished vision. Cindy continues to be in good spirits, enjoying her favorite treats (like sugar-free, blue raspberry Kool-Aid!) and training with her caretakers. The Zoo will share updates about Cindy on social media. For more info about Dean McGee Eye Institute, visit dmei.org
