hird-country nationals often turn to job centres to find a job. After registration at Lithuanian Labour Exchange territorial office, they, like all other citizens of the Republic of Lithuania, have equal access to all labour exchange services and can participate in all programs of integration into the labour market. Twenty-eight-year-old man from Tunisia F. M. came to Lithuania five years ago and at the beginning with his family lived in Panevėžys. He could not find a job for a long time
and registered as unemployed at Panevėžys labour exchange office. The man was regularly meeting with his consultant and after a short time he was offered a job in a hotel. He took the job, but after family`s decision to move to Vilnius, he left his job. F. M. said, that after arriving in Vilnius he had immediately felt more confident and had found up wider possibilities: “Vilnius is the capital, where demand for labour force is higher, and it is easier for foreigners to find a job.
” At the moment the man is successfully working in a restaurant and in the near future does not intend to change his job.His experience also shared the Egyptian A. D. The man came to Lithuania in February, 2010, and immediately registered at Lithuanian Labour Exchange. He was interested in jobs, where the dominant languages were English or French, but such work was not offered to him, because there were not many proposals of that kind.
The man positively characterized employment advisers:“The consultant, with whom I have met was very nice and sophisticated. But since I had already had a university education, and they could offer me only the jobs of lower position, eventually I have found a job on my own.” Egyptian emphasized that his visits to the labour exchange office had been a useful experience. Z. is living in Lithuania for seven years now. He came to Lithuania on the basis of family reunification.At the end of 2010 he registered at a labour exchange office. According to him, the first meeting with a job adviser was unwelcome: “The first question I was asked was: “Do you speak Lithuanian?
” When I said that I did not then I heard the comment: “It will be very difficult to find a job.” The man told us that each month he had been visiting the Labour Exchange office and meeting with the job adviser. Those meetings took place only in theoretical way: the adviser was not interacting and interested how it goes to his client. I. Z. told that after four formal meetings, he did not go for the fifth and only then he received a call from his adviser. I. Z. said that his first experience at the labour exchange office had formed a rather negative attitude towards the Lithuanian authorities. The man pointed out that there was the lack of clear and comprehensive information in English language at labour exchange because the staff `s level of English was low or they did not speak English at all. Currently I.Z. is successfully employed, and when asked, if he would turn to the labour exchange sometime, he answered: “I really hope that it will be no need and I will be able to solve everything by myself.”
Meanwhile, Inga Liubertė the manager of Job Resources Division at Lithuanian Labour Exchange pointed out that the large part of successful job search depended on the aliens themselves: “If a person comes up with the idea that somebody will find a job for him, he is wrong and has the wrong attitude. If an alien comes without motivation and makes no efforts, no one consultant will find a “proper” job for him.” I. Liubertė said that the biggest shortage of workers was in transport, board and shipping (in Klaipėda region), while the main challenges were to match qualification and speak the language. Special programs of integration into the Lithuanian labour market, various training and retraining courses held at labour exchange offices are some of tools to help foreigners to find work and establish themselves in Lithuania. Consequently, thirdcountry nationals who come to Lithuania should exhaust all the possibilities.
