As we approach the holiday season and the excitement it brings to our homes, I can’t help but notice a renewed sense of optimism across our country, and in turn across our industry. Yes, we’re seeing positive shifts in the market that are making the dream of homeownership more attainable. But beyond that, today’s homebuyers are citing emotions like joy, excitement, and hope when it comes to the process of finding a new home.
In fact, according to a recent report released by Century 21 Real Estate—“Connection, Community and Joy”—homebuyers are expanding that vision of the perfect home to include a connection to community. With eighty-eight percent of recent/intending home buyers surveyed willing to compromise on elements of their dream home to be in a community that is perfect for their family1, we started to think about how we could incorporate that concept into how we design and set up our homes. As you get to know your new neighbors, civic leaders and local business owners, you’ll inevitably want to invite them to your home. The question is, what do you want them to see and feel when they walk in the door?
We’ve gathered a team of design and home professionals to provide you with ideas and inspiration to make your home a place they’ll want to visit time and again. Did you know that something as simple as color can change the vibe of your gathering? From a tranquil oasis of soft blues and greens to the sophistication of dark and moody hues, we dive into the psychology of color. Is sipping that perfect glass of red around a crackling fire pit your idea of the perfect night? Why not elevate your home with a luxury wine cellar to ensure you have just the right bottle on hand to suit any guest’s tastes? Too cold to go outside? Gather all your friends to watch latest blockbuster with a state-of-the-art home theater experience.
Whether you’re just settling into your new home or ready to search for the next one, our CENTURY 21 Fine Homes & Estates® designated independent agents are here to help. JUSTINA BLAKENEY, FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF JUNGALOW
In 2009, artist, designer and author Justina Blakeney launched a blog that combined her love of design and writing, and showcased her colorful bohemian aesthetic.
In 2024, Blakeney’s Jungalow® has grown into a highly succesful lifestyle brand with 1.6 million Instagram followers, and high-profile collaborations with brands including Ruggable and Target.
We asked Blakeney about her home and the spaces within it that keep her inspired, energetic and connected.
In your house, which is your favorite room?
Our lanai, which is located between the living room and the courtyard and garden behind the home.
What makes this particular room special to you?
The indoor/outdoor feel of this room is what makes it really special. We installed skylights, which let in a ton of natural light from above (which the hanging plants love!), and we have a sliding glass door that opens up to our courtyard and lets in even more light. When I’m sitting in the lanai, I love looking out onto the olive tree in the courtyard and watching the birds fly overhead.
What are some things that you personally feel make your house a home?
The plants, people, and pets living in it! For me, a home is a reflection of the living energies inside of it, so I love filling our home with colorful art that I make with my kiddo, treasures we have collected on family trips, and natural elements and organic shapes that reflect our connection to nature.

BEING INTENTIONAL WITH COLOR IN YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN
Humans are visual creatures, so it’s no wonder that color has the power to shape our feelings. When you enter a room, the color of the walls, furniture, and decorative items set a tone. Close your eyes and envision a room for relaxing, elegant dinners, or lively moments; chances are, each scene evokes a distinct color palette.
Professional designers take some cues from psychology when they curate spaces for emotional tone. When approaching a new build or refreshing an existing home, color psychology can help to perfect the ambience of a home’s interiors.
PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOR
Speculations on the influences of color stretch back into antiquity. In the 1940s, building on Goethe’s pointed interest in color, Kurt Goldstein was the first modern psychologist to attempt mapping each color’s effect on the human psyche. Since then, social psychologists, occupational therapists, and marketers have sought out the secrets to color’s influence on our moods.
In a foundational study of color psychology, green and blue elicited less anxiety in participants when compared to yellow and red. Warm colors stimulate us, in both positive and negative ways, while cool colors have a tranquilizing, reassuring effect.
Blue, the color of the sky and sea, is a calming hue that is great for sleeping quarters.
“IT USUALLY STARTS WITH A FABRIC, A WALLPAPER, OR A RUG. THAT DRIVES THE REST OF THE DESIGN.” – SASHA BIKOFF, ELLE DECOR DESIGNER
Surface color can affect our perception of a room’s size. Darker colors bring the space inwards, whereas lighter colors expand it. Rich, saturated tones work well on accent walls, which help to guide our gaze through the space. Having a white opposing wall or ceiling opens that dimension, adding to a room’s perceived depth or height.
Chromatic impressions vary across the globe. Scandinavian design employs white to compensate for the lack of winter sunlight. Yet, white in Chinese and Indian cultures is a color of mourning, and might stir a sense of grief. A psychological study looking at color–emotion associations in people from thirty different countries found that universal associations exist, but that shared culture overtakes these in predicting how a color would make someone feel.
These personal reactions to hues keep the psychology of color from being a onecolor-suits-all process. Trends come and go, but your core personality stays the same. Homeowners should keep their cultural backgrounds, aesthetic preferences, and the purpose of a room in mind when committing to a color choice.
CHOOSING COLORS FOR DESIRED EFFECTS
Deciding on the color scheme of a room goes beyond choosing paint for the walls. Lighting, ceiling height, variations in texture, and room shape will affect a color’s impact, as will its tint, shade, tone, and saturation. This is particularly true with secondary colors that can skew either warm or cool, like purple.
Complementary colors (usually one warm color paired with one cool color) amplify each other, and make a room pop when placed close together. Conversely, analogous colors (those with similar properties) provide cohesion, and visually declutter a space. Keep this in mind when choosing paint colors to match existing decor or to highlight feature items that might come in a more limited range of colors. Don’t forget to note the floor plan so that coexisting spaces remain complementary when they fall in the same line of sight.
Sasha Bikoff, a New York–based, ELLE Decor A-List designer, is well-known for her bold color choices. When talking about her process of working with color, she says, “It usually starts with a fabric, a wallpaper, or a rug. That drives the rest of the design.” Once you have a color or two in mind for the walls, “live with samples and a mood board to bring them into the space. Trust your instincts,” Bikoff advises.
A monochrome room is a great background for a splash of bright color. Yellow is a lively, fun choice for your kitchen.
TINTS FOR TRANQUILITY
It’s no surprise that the colors of the sea, sky, and forests have an immediate capacity to calm us; many studies have been done on the relaxing effects of nature on the human body. Home, for many people, is a sanctuary, and earthy, natural tones can enhance its tranquility, particularly in dedicated spaces that are designed for you to truly feel at ease. Leverage cool and neutral tones in bedrooms, bathrooms, or nooks set aside for personal reflection to craft a serene ambience.
Blue has long been one of the most popular choices for interior colors, particularly in living rooms. Indigo, navy and cobalt create striking spaces, and can be layered for effect. For greens, chartreuse is having a moment, but more muted
greens like sage have a timeless quality. Beige, taupe, or even lighter shades of terra cotta or antique rose, are also calming choices that work well in bedrooms. They help to promote a sense of relaxation that is essential for restorative sleep. In the master bathroom, they soothe you as you prepare for, or recover from, the day.
SOPHISTICATED SPACES
For depth, go dark. Midnight, slate gray, deep forest, burgundy, and black build intimacy. They suggest an air of refinement, formality, and even mystery. These shades work well in spacious rooms and with a variety of architectural styles, including Victorian and industrial chic.
High ceilings are a common feature in luxury homes that might give a feeling of a space that’s too cavernous for a convivial atmosphere. Painting ceilings a dark color brackets the space, making it cozier and more inviting. Painting an entertainment center or game room a darker color can create focus, perfect for spotlighting a large screen or pool table.
Neutral tones remind us of nature, and promote a sense of relaxation.
LIVING OUT LOUD
Some were born to be bold. Warm, saturated, and vibrant colors capture this enthusiastic, cheerful energy. These colors fit into rooms that are meant to be the heart of activity or cauldrons of creativity.
Not all warm colors work in the same way, though. While red in food stimulates a healthy appetite, a cherry-red wall in a kitchen might prove to be distracting. The same goes for canary yellow. To create a little stimulation, keep colors like this to accents: think lighting fixtures, a vintage toaster, or upholstery. Light yellow on kitchen or dining room walls can bring a buoyant feeling while remaining in the background.
Orange is a dynamic color that sparks creativity. It works well in kitchens, home offices, and gyms that have a modern look with clean lines. Pair it with stark colors like black and white or even with brown and metallic finishes for a retro look.
LIGHT AND AIRY
Whites and other very light colors excel at reflecting light and creating a sense of expansiveness. Boundaries blur
when light walls run into a light ceiling, increasing a room’s apparent size.
Aside from being a timeless choice, white suggests simplicity and cleanliness. A thoughtfully styled white room can refresh the palette of your mind. When working with white, pay extra attention to supporting décor, windows, and textures as accents. While versatile, white runs the risk of feeling clinical or plain boring when it is overdone.
REINVIGORATE YOUR HOME WITH COLOR
Inspired color choices, beyond being beautiful, enhance the moods of a house’s interiors, and support everyday life in a home. Browse magazines, design blogs, and social media to find interiors that use colors that you like and are considering for your space. Hire an interior designer with a background in color psychology to curate each room according to how it fits into your home and lifestyle. With the right approach, the colors in your space can give you much more than a comfy home—they can improve your well-being, too.

MUST-HAVE LUXURIES
YOU NEVER KNEW YOUR HOME NEEDED
When we imagine a luxury property, many design features and accessories come to mind: a swimming pool, an enormous television, an outdoor kitchen. And then some ideas come along that take the experience to another level, making the experience of luxury at home even more grand.
Some ideas are big, but even small additions positively impact your daily life in large ways, making you feel truly pampered. Here are some solutions, ranging from big to small to mind-blowing, that make home life supremely comfortable.
INFRARED SAUNA
You have likely used a sauna before, but one with infrared technology? While it may sound futuristic, the technology has been around for sixty years, and the benefits—like relaxation, detoxification, boosted immunity and calorie burning—are supremely beneficial in the mordern world.
The specialized light heats your body rather than heating the surrounding air like a traditional sauna does, bringing on a sweat faster, penetrating the tissues more deeply, and providing a more tolerable environment.
Some designs are also attractive enough to be incorporated into your design theme. The infra-red models from Sun Home Saunas will fit seamlessly into a luxury aesthetic, with sleek black cladding and a cedar or eucalyptus wood interior.
Infra-red saunas promote a range of health benefits, and will fit seamlessly into a luxury aesthetic.
BUILT-IN SELTZER FAUCET
Enjoy seltzer water just as conveniently as filtered water. Seltza faucets resemble traditional faucets, offering a hot and cold tap, but they boast a second nozzle that attaches to a system under your sink that provides optional carbonation. These taps provide chilled sparkling and still water, as well as room-temperature filtered water, and hot and cold water from the main supply. Choose from various luxury finishes to match your kitchen: brushed satin, brushed gold, matte black, or chrome.
WATER FROM THIN AIR
A growing concern worldwide is the availability of clean water. Genesis Systems is working to solve this issue with its WaterCube 100, which pulls water directly from the air. You won’t struggle with access to water after disasters or due to local water rights. It delivers water instantly and operates consistently for 24 hours. One unit serves homes with four residents, and you can scale them to create as much water as you need.
WIRELESS CAR CHARGING
It’s the dream of an electric-car owner: no longer needing a power cord to juice up your electric car. Well, dream no more! WiTricity has made wireless EV charging a reality. The thin charger lays flat and charges your EV when you park over it. The magnetic resonance technology is tightly bound between the receiver and the vehicle, so it is safe for use in the home, and it works just as efficiently as an electric plug. No tangle of cords, no manual intervention—just attractive, easy charging.
SIMULATED GOLF COURSE
Why trek to a golf course when you can play at home? OptiShot golf simulators are an excellent choice for homes because the compact system works in smaller-than-standard spaces. Play golf on replicas of world-famous courses, get accurate swing analysis, and play with multiple players. It’s perfect for improving your game or hosting a virtual tournament with friends anytime.
SMART LAWNCARE
Want to enjoy a favorite cocktail and mow your lawn at the same time? Smart lawn mowers can
offer this luxury, with a hands-free and ultrarelaxing lawncare experience.
One mower worth recognizing is the Goat GX-600 by ECOVACS. It works like a robotic vacuum, cutting your grass at accurate intervals and stopping short at obstructions such as sidewalks and tree trunks. It can also traverse up 40-degree hills, making it an easy choice for sloped lawns.
AN ELEVATOR
They say life is a journey. Why not travel in style? A residential elevator makes accessing different stories of a home a breeze for everyone, while extending the luxury experience of your home.
Some designs discreetly hide away behind doors, but others are so beautiful that they work as the crown jewel of a home. Savaria designs elevators that work as a stunning addition to any luxury house. The panoramic
Hot, chilled, still, sparkling: the Seltza faucets deliver various water options.
elevators feature glass on all sides, ensuring that you make a truly grand entrance.
HOME GYM
You might imagine owning a home gym but find that designing and installing one is too much of a hassle—they can take up a lot of space, and deciding on the right equipment is a headache. But what if you could get an allin-one gym that saves space and provides a tailored workout?
The Tonal home gym is ultra compact, allowing you to change any space into an exercise haven. Its adjustable arms allow for 245 body movements, with the workout weight adjusted according to your fitness goals. You also get access to instructors who keep you inspired and moving, and smart technology that tracks your progress.
HOME THEATER SYSTEM
A projector system turns any room into a theater, and its portability means that you can take advantage of existing comfortable furniture anywhere in the house.
Projector technology also continues to improve each year, and a top offering is the LG CineBeam HU915QE Premium 4K UHD Laser UST Projector. This state-of-the-art device delivers stunning 4K UHD resolution and vibrant colors, even in well-lit rooms. Its ultra-short throw design allows for easy placement, while smart TV features provide access to streaming services without additional devices. This model also comes with a stereo speaker.
The Tonal home gym provides a huge range of exercise options in a stylish package.

SMART TOILET
If you want to add more luxury to your home, why not incorporate something that you can enjoy multiple times a day? A smart toilet offers everything from a heated seat and automatic lid operation to night lighting, bidet features, and blow-drying. It transforms your bathroom experience from a nuisance to something you look forward to.
The Badeloft ST-01 model checks all the boxes in a clean and attractive design. You can even control the features with your feet, ensuring a completely hands-free experience.
SMART SAFE
A luxury property often houses high-value items, making a safe an intelligent addition for any homeowner.
A smart toilet, like the ST-01 from Badeloft, is a luxury in which you can indulge every day.
Keep your valuables safe with the stylish, smart and secure MyCube safe.
Luxury outdoor living with furniture from Bassett.
Smart technology continues to make life at home easier and safer (in this case, literally). MyCube offers smart safes that open and close with smartphone or fingerprint technology (standard electronic code models are also available). Gone are the days of bulky, unsightly hunks of metal—these safes look good, too. Choose from different sizes and colors, and add accessories like trays, a watch winder, jewelry cases, and fireproof bags.
INDOOR INFINITY TUB
The beauty of an infinity pool is now available for your bathroom. This year, Kohler debuted two infinity tubs that flow water over the edges without wasting it. The water pumps back into the tub from the bottom, avoiding the need for a faucet.
The cube-shaped Stillness Experience model is a gorgeous addition to your bathroom, striking in its looks, and deep enough for a full soak. A
tray-like tower houses programmable lighting and dual fog and aroma settings that work with your favorite essential oils for the ultimate luxurious bath experience.
LUXURY OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Remember the days when outdoor furniture looked and felt like outdoor furniture, never to be confused with comfy indoor lounge seating? Now, you can dress up the outdoors and maximize your real estate with beautiful and comfortable outdoor designs of a quality comparable to indoor products.
HEAT LAMPS
Heat lamps let you enjoy your outdoor areas year-round, making them a worthy addition to a luxury patio. But you may not be a fan of the clunky, unattractive designs you often see at restaurants.
These days, there are many attractive options that will heat your space while almost disappearing into your decor. One example is the Platinum Smart Heat Electric heater by Bromic. The streamlined design can be flush mounted into your ceiling, providing effective and efficient heat without any intrusion into your space. Your eyes won’t know it’s there, but the rest of your body will.
Sure, you probably don’t need every item on this list. But need and want are close enough!
Bassett offers luxurious and highly functional furniture for outdoor spaces. At first glance, you would never know that it is made for the outdoors. The soft and inviting materials will make you think twice about what makes a good outdoor fabric, and the collection—much like an indoor setting—includes modular chair sections and ottomans, letting you create as much or as little seating as you need.

THE FINE ART OF WINE STORAGE
Elevate your home with a luxury wine cellar.
Turning your passion for wine into a noteworthy feature of your home starts with the perfect wine cellar, where function and artistry merge to create a defining design statement. A highend residential wine cellar isn’t just a storage solution—it’s a statement about luxury, craftsmanship, and appreciation for the fine wines of the world.
Whether you are a wine enthusiast who wants to enjoy your favorite bottles for years to come, you have a yen for investing in high-end wines for resale, or you want to add a new design element to your home while increasing its value, there are several factors to consider before you get started on your wine cellar. We’re here to guide you through the daunting but exciting project of creating one of your own for your home.
MASTERING THE ART OF CLIMATE CONTROL
As every wine drinker knows, wine is perishable. When exposed to external influences such as heat, humidity, light, fluctuations in temperature and even vibrations, wine can spoil.
Wine cellars of today are a quantum leap from their forebears, which were first constructed by the Neolithic people in Iran around 7000 BC. They have evolved from being merely a protection against the environment into a complex combination of advanced technology, design statement, and display case.
Temperature: Experts and wine enthusiasts tend to agree that the ideal temperature for storing wine is 55 degrees Fahrenheit . More specifically, the temperature should range from 50 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit for short-term storage and 53 to 57 degrees for long-term.
Above: Take advantage of available space in your home to create a designer wine cellar.
Below: Wine racks come in a variety of designs.
Opposite page: This Signature Wine Cellars space incorporates comfortable seating for a tasting experience.
Humidity: The goal of controlling your wine cellar’s humidity is to prevent corks from drying out, because a dry cork will allow oxygen to enter the bottle. Too much humidity can also damage the labels, which could have an impact on the wine’s resale value, as well as creating the risk of mildew formation on the cork. The standard for a wine cellar’s relative humidity (RH) is an average of 70 percent.
Light: Wine should be kept away from direct sunlight and all types of artificial light, because light can interact with the phenolic compounds in the wine, causing its flavor or aroma to change. The golden rule in wine cellar design is that the space should be kept completely dark.
Vibration: Many wine collectors believe that vibrations disturb the sediments in fine wine and therefore the process
of biochemical evolution, causing premature ageing. Avoid placing your wine cellar where there is exposure to vibrations, such as washing machines, tumble dryers, and even loud music. It is imperative to ensure that your prized collection experiences as little movement as possible.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE FOR YOUR WINE CELLAR
The best place to start is to take stock of your current collection and consider your plans for the future. Your space can be as small as twenty-five square feet, which offers nineteen feet of usable space and can hold as many as 375 bottles. Increasing it to 100 square feet will allow you to accommodate somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 bottles. A useful rule of thumb: You can stock ten to fifteen bottles of wine per square foot in your wine cellar.
A WINE CELLAR ... PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE NOT ONLY YOUR WINES, BUT ALSO YOUR TASTE IN DÉCOR.
PROPER WINE STORAGE: POSITION MATTERS
Wine bottles should be stored on their side to keep the cork in constant contact with the wine, keeping it moist. Positioning the bottles at a slight angle allows the cork to maintain partial contact with the wine, so that air bubbles are formed at the top rather than the middle of the bottle to allow for a more gradual oxidation and maturation process.
DESIGNING A WINE CELLAR THAT REFLECTS YOUR STYLE
A wine cellar is not just a storage space. It presents an opportunity to showcase not only your wines, but also your taste in décor. It should be designed to complement your home décor and according to your personal style, whether your aesthetic is modern, transitional or traditional. For example, if you have classical tastes, choose warm wood, intricate details, stone columns, and barreled ceilings. If they lean towards contemporary, opt for clean lines, and materials like stainless steel, acrylic and unframed glass.
According to Adam Soto, the founder and owner of Signature Wine Cellar, which has specialized in designing and installing custom wine cellars for more than 20 years, the most recent trend in wine cellar design is a contemporary look. “Clients are getting younger,” he says. “They don’t want the traditional cellar with barrels and grape vines. The look is more clean and modern.” One of the biggest changes he has seen over the years is that the basement is no longer the preferred location
for a wine cellar. He explains, “We’re installing them on the main floor of homes, in kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms. They function more as an art installation than as a place for storage.”
SELECTING THE BEST MATERIALS FOR FUNCTIONALITY AND AESTHETICS
While options include stone masonry, steel, aluminum, glass and acrylic, as well as tile, stone and sealed concrete as flooring, wood is a perennial favorite because it is resilient, attractive, and easy to customize. Signature Wine Cellars prefers white oak, black walnut and sapele mahogany. “They work well in a cool and moist environment,” Soto explains. “They won’t splinter, rot or become moldy.” As for doors, Soto mentions that ninety-nine percent of his clients opt for glass so that the interior serves as a design statement.
SHELVING SOLUTIONS: PRACTICALITY MEETS ELEGANCE
Don’t underestimate the importance of shelving, or racking, in your wine cellar. The design should be both functional and attractive, while layout will depend on the size of your collection and the shape of the bottles.
A properly built wine rack will help wine age correctly. Many are made from wood that is mildew resistant and moisture retentive, which helps keep the corks moist.
Wine racks are available in an unlimited selection of sizes and configurations. Stackable ones allow you to add additional storage as needed, while those with double depth can be designed to fit any bottle size, from splits to magnums.
LIGHTING YOUR WINE CELLAR: FUNCTIONALITY WITH FLAIR
A wine cellar should be dark when unoccupied to allow the wine to rest and mature under the best conditions. But to maximize the pleasure and efficiency of your visits, make sure that the lighting is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Overhead lighting can serve as general illumination for your wine cellar, but there are many choices for personalizing this important space. They include LED and fiber optic lighting, as well as positioning options such as recessed and shelf lighting, chandeliers and pendants, spotlights, accent lights, and under-cabinet and backlighting. “LED is our most popular type of lighting,” says Soto. “It displays the bottles well, doesn’t produce much heat, and is very cost-effective.”
RAISE A GLASS
Incorporating a wine cellar into your home isn’t simply a practical solution for racking and temperature control; it presents an opportunity to showcase your personal taste and elevate your living space. Whether your goal is to preserve your wines under ideal conditions, enhance your home’s aesthetics, or make a smart investment, a well-designed wine cellar offers both luxury and functionality. Crafted from a careful selection of materials with a design that suits your style, your wine cellar will not only protect your finest bottles, but it will also provide a striking focal point in your home for years to come. Let’s raise a glass to the art of wine storage!

BRINGING WALLS TO LIFE THE BOLD TREND OF MURAL ART
Make your space a true reflection of your personality with custom mural artwork.
In a world of Pinterest-inspired interiors, it can be hard to find your own look and style—particularly when it comes to the walls of your home. Paint colors, wallpaper, artwork and shelving are all popular options to customize your space, but chances are that the look you end up with won’t be completely unique.
What is guaranteed to set your home apart from everyone else’s is a custom mural, designed in collaboration with an artist to suit your aesthetic preferences, your unique space and your personality.
To get the lowdown on mural art in the home, we spoke with Jeanine Hattas Wilson, CEO and Creative Director of Los Angeles–based Hattas Studios. Jeanine’s company has been working with homeowners for more than two decades to create beautiful, personalized mural artwork for their homes, from initial consultation through concept and design to delivery of the custom work. The art can be anything that a person desires for their home, from abstract patterns to realistic landscapes, and even faux marble or wood grain.
Murals can be painted in any space, from living rooms to wine cellars, bathrooms, gazebos and garages. You can even paint floors, furniture and windows—the only limit is your imagination.
To begin the process of bringing a mural into your home, you should have an in-depth consultation with the artist to make sure that your vision is honored, as well as bringing the artist into your space to understand your style. The architectural and décor features of your home will also give the artist better insight into what you’re looking for.
If you want a little drama in your interiors, a mural will not disappoint.
“We can learn a lot from asking the homeowner questions, discussing their interests, likes and dislikes,” Jeanine says. “And by seeing the home, we can gather a sense of the homeowner’s style. We notice the types of art they have already collected, the colors that keep appearing in their decor, and the vibe they’ve created. We look closely at the interior design elements, including patterns, textures, scale and colors, along with themes and motifs.
“We also get a sense of the architectural lines and structure of the room, to ensure that our work looks purposeful and balanced within the space. All of these elements can help direct the elements found in the artwork, and ensure that the look and style work well in the room, and also help to tie the room together.
“This allows us to create something that is specifically created for each homeowner. This is the great thing about custom artwork and murals: each is one-of-a-kind, made specifically for each space.”
If you require a little direction for your artwork, there are universal and timeless themes that can help kick-start your artistic vision.
“Bringing the outside in is always a good call,” Jeanine says. “Nature is universally beautiful, and nothing says luxury like a great view! Another popular trend is using either neutral color palettes, or rich jewel tones. You really can’t go wrong with light tans, creams, whites and grays; and painting entire murals in these light tones creates soft and sophisticated
results. We also see the use of dark teals, green and blues mixed with metallics for a high-end sense of elegance. Another trend we’re enjoying is maximalism, with layered elements, colors and textures in the decor, furniture and artwork. This is a bold and dramatic look that is fun, personal and engaging.”
As murals are designed to adorn your walls for a long time, it’s also important to consider what you will be happy looking at for years to come.
“In order to create timeless art, we consider using universal themes, such as love and beauty,” Jeanine says. “And we try to evoke an emotional response in the viewer, such as a sense of wonder or reflection. These emotional responses transcend time.”
Once the artist has a good idea of your vision, they will create concept sketches and mood boards, followed by a digital mock-up of the artwork that is superimposed onto a photo of the room. At this point, adjustments can be made before the painting begins.
Jeanine Hattas Wilson
Jeanine Hattas Wilson says bringing the outdoors in is always a good option for mural artwork.
During the mural-painting process, many precautions are taken to make sure the residents’ home and belongings are protected, and that the home remains comfortable for its residents. Spaces are masked with plastic, paper and cloth, and artists don’t wear shoes, or they wear booties to cover them. Any music is played through earbuds so as not to disturb the residents.
The surface for the art is then prepared: wall damage is repaired, and the surface is cleaned and primed before the paint is applied. Jeanine’s company uses high-end paint that is intended for exterior use, for longevity, and she recommends a UV clear coat to protect the art from sun and dirt. The final result is a vibrant piece with a consistent finish that will last for a long time to come.
We asked Jeanine about some of the most memorable pieces her company has worked on.
“We worked with homeowners who bought a castle in Alhambra, California,” Jeanine says. “They wanted to update the castle, while
IN ORDER TO CREATE TIMELESS ART, WE CONSIDER USING UNIVERSAL THEMES, SUCH AS LOVE AND BEAUTY.
keeping the integrity of its historical look. They had us design and paint a gorgeous landscape on the walls that resembled the property’s original landscape, which used to be a pastoral sheep farm. The mural turned out stunning. The colors were toned down to fit the 1920s look of the home, and we included several bird species in the scene that relate to the names of the guest rooms in the home.
“Another client just purchased a new mansion in Anaheim Hills, California. The place was beautiful and had a two-story music room with a grand piano. There were four giant picture-frame moldings on the walls with nothing in the center—each was fourteen feet tall. Considering the scale and the frames, the only way to address them was with custom
artwork. Our team created four stunning landscape scenes with an angel or two playing music in each section. The murals are beautifully designed, and create a heavenly and relaxing music-themed atmosphere.”
If you’re trying to decide if a mural is the direction you want to take for your interiors, Jeanine has some advice.
“Since custom art is a collaboration, you want to make sure you’re hiring someone you jive with—someone who listens to you and understands your vision. Make sure that they offer designs and mock-ups, so you can see the final work before the painting starts. And look closely at their past work. You are not comparing apples to apples here. No two artists are the same. Make sure they are experienced and highly skilled, and that they practice excellent prep work and craftsmanship.”
The most important thing, though, Jeanine says, is ensuring that what you end up with brings you joy.
“Having custom artwork created is not just about the final product, it’s also about the experience. The artwork is inspired by you; it’s your own personal expression and it’s personal. You’ll want to make sure the process is smooth and joyful, and the results are long-lasting and beautiful.”
