Summer Maintenance
We know summer is short and you want to spend as much time as possible in the great outdoors. We get it; we are Moms and Nanas too (aren’t Grandbabies awesome?)! Before we pack up the beach bag though, it’s important to take care of the maintenance items around home. After all, a home is a big investment. For most of us, the biggest investment we make! Keeping up with our investment monthly is crucial in order to avoid major problems that may happen later. This is why we’ve created this handy checklist which highlights the most important tasks you should take care of before vacation time arrives!
Check caulking, weather stripping and exterior finishes
The sensitive wood insides of your home are prone to rot if exposed to moisture. Windowsills and doorframes are the easiest access points for water and pests. If you see any cracked caulking, remove and replace.
Dehumidify the basement
The ground retains moisture. This moisture creeps into your home, particularly the basement. Keeping a dehumidifier downstairs eliminates the moisture that can fester. Moisture that festers can cause mold, mildew and air quality problems in the rest of the house.
Check up on the roof
Your roof is your shield against nature. Now that the weather has calmed a bit, inspect your shingles from the ground first. Look for shingles that are loose or turned up. Get a closer look at these ones to see if any damage has occurred underneath. Replacing a couple of shingles now is better than replacing an entire roof before winter!
Clean your air filter
If you have a central air conditioning system, make sure you change your air filter! This should be done every 1-2 months, but in summer it’s good to change it before you leave for peace of mind and clean air. If you have a different system, clean the air filter in your air handling unit. Remember, taking the time for a small amount of maintenance now could save you precious time and dollars in the future. Take a few moments to check these off your list and then go have fun! Life is for living - enjoy it!
