Workshop 6 Toni Pretorius

Sculpting Porcelain: Hand Modelling and Carving Bio: Toni Pretorius was born in Kimberley and completed her Diploma in Fine Art in 2006 at the University of the Free State. She went on to complete her BTech degree in Fine Art at the Central University of Technology in 2011, majoring in sculpture. She is currently employed as a fine artist in the Design Department of the National Museum in Bloemfontein. In 2016 she was declared overall winner of the Phatshoane Henney New Breed Art Competition in the Free State. Toni has a great love for porcelain and favours it in her sculptural works, priding herself on understanding the intrinsic qualities and characteristics of this demanding medium.

Workshop Description You will learn how to model a small, pendant-sized piece of porcelain from a twodimensional image. The focus will be on observing natural textures and shapes and on how to recreate these textures in clay. Each participant will ideally produce a finished product that they can then keep for themselves. You will get tips on how to streamline the process, especially when making many pieces at a time. Other points to be discussed will include tips on working with porcelain, how it differs from other clays, what effects can be achieved at the various drying stages of the clay, how to mimic various textures (with a focus on organic textures), creating focal points on a three-dimensional work, understanding how the medium works, what it will and won’t allow, and how to deal with breakages and other setbacks. Workshop 9 Toni Pretorius

Sculpting Porcelain: Hand-modelling flowers and feathers…how thin can you go? Workshop Description You will learn how to model basic natural objects, such as flowers and feathers, from a two-dimensional image. The focus will be on observing natural textures and shapes as well as on how to ‘construct’ shapes by combining simple elements such as petals. This involves understanding how porcelain ‘sticks’, also changing surface tension. Each participant will ideally produce a couple of pieces.

Workshop 7 Michelle Legg

Coiling, Impressing, Burnishing and Terra Sigillata Bio: Michelle Legg holds a Masters degree in Ceramic Design from the University of Johannesburg. Her master’s thesis focused on traditional coiling techniques and European lace decoration. Profiles and strong forms have always featured in her work. Michelle taught the art of coiling in the Ceramic Department at UJ and continues to teach studio pottery classes, private workshops and specialised ceramic workshops at The Pottery Studio in Bryanston. Michelle is a Fellow of CSA and participates in regional and national exhibitions, and has been a selector locally and in Namibia. Her work is found in many private and public collections.

Workshop Description Michelle will share her passion for coiling by demonstrating the basic techniques she learnt from rural potters when she was researching her master’s thesis. Each participant will build two small pots using these techniques. One of the forms will be used to impress and burnish, while the other will be decorated using terrasigilatta made at the workshop Workshop 15 Michelle Legg

Figure Sculpture - Sketches in Clay The human form has always fascinated artists. After gaining some insight into proportions, you will sculpt poses from a clothed model, which will not require the use of armature. You may choose a representational, completely abstract or distorted version of the human body to sculpt. The work will be kept small (approximately 20cm x 20cm) and a few different poses will be explored.

Workshop 8 Lindy van Hasselt

Sculpting Wild Animals in Clay Bio: Lindy has straddled art and science from the beginning of her career. She holds a BSc in Zoology and Psychology, as well as a post-grad teaching diploma from UCT. She began her conservation career in 1990, working for the Endangered Wildlife Trust, and spent the next 14 years initiating and developing crane conservation programmes across sub-Saharan Africa. For this work she won two international awards, the Whitley Conservation Award and the Rolex Award for Enterprise. Simultaneously, she started painting on ceramics and ran Lindy Ceramics, a small business specialising in bird designs painted on dinnerware. In 2013 Lindy joined The Pottery Studio and has exhibited solo at the Origins Centre and the Greig Gallery in Hyde Park, as well as featuring in Australia’s Ceramics Monthly. She is working towards another exhibition at Greig Gallery, which is scheduled for the end of the year.

Workshop Description After demonstrating the basics of working without armature, Lindy will assist you in making your own wild hare using paper clay. Lindy will also demonstrate the techniques she uses to colour the creatures, as well how to use decals.

Workshop 13

Lunchtime Talk Eugene Hon

Ceramics in the Digital Age Bio: Eugene is a ceramic artist with a passion for drawing. His ceramic statements are a creative response to the evocative quality of literary sources he engages with. He has work in all of the major art galleries in South Africa, including many corporate and private collections. He completed a Master in Fine Art degree at the University of Cape Town in 1986, specialising in ceramic sculpture. He is presently employed as a lecturer and as a director of the FADA gallery at the University of Johannesburg (Gauteng). This talk is free to CSA members and is R100 for non-members.

Workshop 16 John Shirley

Miraculous Paper Plaster Bio: John has been involved in ceramics in one way or another since 1970, and is both a maker and a teacher. His own work is in bone china, using a number of different surface treatments. As a teacher, his interest is in skills transfer and in assisting students to find their ‘voice’ through their clay work. John holds a BTech in Ceramic Design and is a fellow of Ceramics Southern Africa. In 2009 he was accepted into the international Academy of Ceramics.

Workshop Description In this workshop, John will demonstrate the making of a one-piece drop-out mould using paper plaster, a process that uses a lot less plaster and less equipment. The moulds are much lighter in weight and can be used far sooner than moulds made in the conventional way. He will discuss casting slip and the casting process, and will also demonstrate a method of making plaster slabs, which participants will carve or incise to decorative ceramic surfaces in relief.
