Lalage Hunter Glazecor Award 2017

Affiliate South African National Association for the Visual Arts (SANAVA)

Letter from the Chair Dear Gauteng Members, Things have been a bit hectic already this year and the time is running away! We have managed to secure a venue and pin down dates for the Gauteng Regional exhibition 2018 which I am happy to share with you. My Creative Heritage – a themed exhibition of ceramic plates by members of Gauteng Region of CSA. As our Regional exhibition runs in September – Heritage month in South Africa, we have decided to hold a special themed exhibition that will run alongside the Regional exhibition. This themed exhibition is open to all members who also enter the Regional exhibition (i.e. if work is entered for the themed exhibition, there must also be an entry for the Regional). Participants are invited to submit 1 ceramic plate that draws on this theme – •

Plates may be formed using any ceramic technique, decorated in any ceramic medium and may be in relief, (maximum 10cms relief from wall). All plates must fit into the wall space 40cms x 40 cms, absolutely no exceptions. Plates must have hanging devices and be delivered complete.

Plates can be round, square etc, providing they do not exceed 40cms x 40 cms in any direction.

Artist’s statement – A paragraph is required to give visitors a short background into the idea behind the plate.

If you are unsure or have any questions, please contact myself or John Shirley.

I look forward to seeing the usual high standard of work we have come to expect from our Gauteng members. Warm Regards,

Colleen

Heritage

Heritage is a deceptively simple idea. It can be considered to be made up of the practices and traditions that are passed on from parents to children, but it also has to do with what has been passed on from the family, community and place where people have been raised. For example, heritage can include a family’s professional history; religious affiliation; or cultural traditions. Yet heritage also includes that which is part of the national consciousness. A person who was born in South Africa, for instance, has both a national South African heritage, as well as a more personal and private one. Such a person might also be considered to have an African heritage too, because they were born on the continent of Africa.

John’s Column

T

his year in Gauteng we have a regional exhibition and in the Cape, we have the national Biennale. Both of these shows are major events on the local ceramics calendar and are incredible showcase opportunities for all ceramists.

This brings me to the work presented for these exhibitions. How often I hear people saying they hope they can get their work fired in time for submissions or waiting for the final firing before the deadline date to see if they get something suitable out of the firing. For exhibitions of this standing is this the best way to approach them. My ideal would be to hold back work that you are happy with throughout the year and then when the time comes you have a selection on hand from which you can choose your best pieces rather than waiting for the last minute with the luck of the draw attitude. Both of the above exhibitions are by online submissions and again photographs of the work must be submitted. If you are not confident about your photography skills now is the best time to start practicing. If you are not happy with the results you are getting ask a friend with more experience for assistance. Remember your entry into these shows can be turned down if the quality of your images is not up to scratch so my advice right now is to start holding back your best work and take images as you have the work. 3 images of each piece, 2 views and a detail shot. Imagine when the time comes to enter your work if you had all the pieces ready together with your images, taking the stress out of what can be a very stressful time.
