t is rather late to be wishing you a happy new year, but, as this is the first newsletter of 2017, we would like to send out a message of peace, joy and success in everything that comes your way. May every firing fuel the passion for the creativity we share in this world of clay.
We welcome Gill Clark as the new CSA Administrator. Gill has been an active member for several years and is well qualified to deal with all matters arising within the ambit of the Gauteng office.The newsletter will be slightly different this year. We will no longer publish articles such as profiles of members or other descriptive features – these will be covered in the National Ceramics magazine. The newsletter will concentrate on Gauteng events and matters of immediate interest. The newsletters of all the regions are published on the website, so, if you are visiting another province, look at their newsletter and see what is happening there. The Gauteng AGM was held on Saturday 11 February. The exciting Clay Festival was held at the end of March, make plans to book your tables for the Potters Markets will be held in Johannesburg and Pretoria this year and more news and information about your region of Ceramics SA. As always we would welcome input from any of our members. Tell us what you are thinking and help us to plan future activities. All it takes is an e-mail or a phone call. Keep wedging.

John’s Column
ell, the first Sandton Potters market is behind us, and what a great experience it was for all concerned. Held at the Sandton Field & Study Centre, which will regularly be used for CSA events for numerous reasons, including its idyllic setting and convenient location. We plan to make the Sandton Potters Market a permanent fixture on our ceramic calendar and it will be held twice a year. The next market is planned for November 11th.
The aim with the market is to create a highly anticipated biannual event showing work of a cross section of quality handmade ceramics which will raise the profile of ceramics as well as that of the participants, and if the first market was anything to go by it certainly looks as if this is already happening. If you missed the first one be sure you don’t miss out on the next one, and if you were there I am sure we will see you again next time. As a special offer anyone who wants to book for the November market and has not yet done so any bookings made before the end of April will be at a special discounted rate of R200.00 for a table. Look forward to seeing you next time and be sure to tell everyone you know about it.
Clay Festival 2017 Feedback

Sandton Field & Study Centre became the new venue for this year’s Clay Festival. Workshops on offer included Sculpture – Animals, Figures and small birds & flowers, also Slab boxes, Decorating techniques, Coiling, Altering thrown ware, Mould making … and for the pyromaniacs among us – Smoke firing, Raku and Beer firing. The 2 free lunch time talks were well attended and gave us lots to think about and start discussions with our peers.

ll in all, about 175 workshop attendances took place in 15 workshops. At times 4 work shops ran simultaneously. We were delighted to welcome over 20 TUT (Tshwane University of Technology) Ceramic students and one of their lecturers. This is part of CSA’s outreach program and we believe our energy should be focused on young people interested in taking ceramics seriously in their career considerations. Our 4 loyal suppliers, 2 CSA participating members and 2 product suppliers, served our visitors with warm smiles and lots of information. Grateful thanks to James Pryde from Glazecor and Noel Wood-Joubert from Ndebele Mining for their interesting displays and also for their generous donations of clay to the TUT students. Kathy Bigham, owner of KayBee Ceramics and Margaret Melville Hugo, owner of JM Craft understood our
needs well and offered great products with Festival discounted prices. Even the paramedics from St Johns commented that they had enjoyed watching the workshops! Luckily they had no serious injuries to attend to, but it makes us all feel safer having them on standby. Our 4 visitor presenters had full classes and we extend thanks to Richard Pullen from Bathurst, Catherine Brennon from Hermanus, Sharon Thompson from Mauritius and Toni Pretorius from Bloemfontein. Our own local talent consisted of Presenters Michelle Legg, John Shirley, Evette Kruger and Lindy van Hasselt. All did us proud. Lunch time duo Kim Millar and Trish Pichulik gave us food for thought on their talk “Marketing your Brand” and Eugene Hon’s talk on “Ceramics in the Digital Age” resonated with many members. >
The Gauteng Management Team is at it’s all time best. This event takes hours of hard work and lots of schlepping stuff backwards and forwards from the venue. Many hands make light work and I was very proud of the way things came together. We aren’t professional Event Organisers but we could sure give them a run for their money!! Thanks to each and every one of you on the team, and those who helped who aren’t part of the official team! Last, but definitely not least, a huge thank you to Gill Clark, our new Secretary and Administrator, for all her efforts in putting the event together; from the JOC meetings & files of information that had to be accumulated, to the many bookings and changes to bookings, to the many phone calls and meetings at Field & Study, to manning the Reception at the event, to providing a coffee/tea station, etc. etc. Gill, it hasn’t been an easy few months but you have become a pillar in the organisation and I know next time it will be a lot easier!
