Introducing our New Chair
A
fter a visit to the beautiful Kim Sacks Gallery about 10 years ago I started attending pottery classes. I loved my weekly lessons so much that my dear husband thought I might be having an affair. . . and an affair with clay it was. I am married to an extremely supportive man who has always encouraged all my creative endeavors. My latest role is that of a grandmother, the happiest most uplifting of times. Another great love and passion in my life are rescue animals. My most attractive old boy Jackson comes from the SPCA and my brown pavement special, well she was saved from the streets of Alexandra. On a more serious note, I decided to accept this position to give back to the ceramic family, for all the positives, the sense of community of creative people playing together for whatever reason. My most important goal is to grow our number of members in Gauteng. I must give our members quality exhibitions and workshops to inspire them all , but always maintaining a high standard of work for the more serious amongst us. I am extremely excited about our upcoming regional exhibition at GIBS and I hope this will expose the existence of our association to the broader public. To our members, please talk to other creatives in your studio and community so they too may discover the joy of working in clay. Warm Regards,

In memorium On Tuesday the 9th April our ceramic community sadly lost Colleen Lehmkuhl. She had not only been our association’s chairlady for the last 8 years but was also a passionate promoter of ceramics. She worked selflessly for our organization, always giving her best in every way she knew. Colleen was most generous too, both materially and spiritually. This aligned with her down to earth warmth and honesty as well as her intense love for her family, will forever describe the footprint that she left on this earth.

his is the first newsletter for 2019 and we have just had the Sandton Potters Market at the Field & Study centre in Sandton. This is such a great opportunity for our members to show and sell their work. The market is always well received and is gradually building up to be an event that is eagerly anticipated. And talking of eagerly anticipated, our Regional Exhibition opens next week. And what an exciting exhibition this promises to be. This year the venue is the prestigious Gordon Institute of Business Science in Illovo, and I hope you will be at the opening on Thursday 9th May. As you may know we are busy rebuilding our website with many new features. It will only be launched after the regional exhibition and will surely be a site that we can all be proud to be a part of. We will soon be calling for updated profiles of all our members who want to have theirs on the website. I will be sending out details for the new requirements for your profiles in the next newsletter and it will be great to see more of you taking this opportunity to show your work online. That’s it for now and I hope to see many of you at the opening of the Regional Exhibition on Thursday evening, 9th May at 6:30 pm.

STUDIO SPOTLIGHT

RHODA & MADELEINE HENNING’S STUDIO A formidable mother and daughter team runs a working and teaching studio in the heart of Brooklyn in Pretoria. Rhoda comes from a diverse academic background and started out as a mathematician then studied medicine and after graduation got fascinated by clay and all its possibilities. Madelaine did a degree in IT and worked overseas for a time before returning back to clay to join the studio.
Madelaine
Rhoda started her studio in the 1970s and has been running a working studio ever since. Madelaine and her sister basically grew up in the studio and around clay and there has never been a time in her life that she was not involved with clay in one way or another. Rhoda draws her inspiration from nature and is fascinated by colour and the vibrance it offers. In the early potter days there were very limited colours to work with and thus today she celebrates all the brilliant colours available to the modern potter. Madelaine is inspired by fantasy and also by colour. They focus on functional ware in their own studio work.

Rhoda
Rhoda is busy developing new glazes for the use in their studio and to extend the range of her own brand of underglaze. Madelaine is busy working on a new collection of sculptural work. They are also compiling a study plan for a certificate in ceramics. Needless to say that there are big plans in the making for this ceramic studio and a bright future ahead. The studio can facilitate up to 40 people offering corporate workshops and birthday clay parties which adds a team building dynamic and is great fun. They believe that there is a future for ceramics in South Africa and that more should be done to bring it into our schools, exposing our youth to this wonderful craft. It was great to visit a studio full of vigor and a place that is filled with people passionate about clay.
The Recent Potter’s Market
Thank you to all the stall holders who participated in the Sandton Potters Market on Saturday, 30th March. We firmly believe that the market will grow from strength to strength and attract more stall holders and customers alike as the market becomes more established and appears in the all the major Johannesburg event calendars.

Do you have any ceramics tools, books, equipment or ceramics that you no longer use?
There was a lovely ambience and camaraderie among the members which made the market very special and everyone always enjoys spending the day with fellow potters and friends.
Please donate them to the market “white elephant” stall and let someone else benefit from them.
It is very encouraging to hear that some members experienced very good sales at the market and others who made contacts for new opportunities.
Proceeds will go to the Ceramics SA Benevolent Fund.
