Ceramics SA Western Cape July 2016 newsletter Chairman’s report Dear members I have decided to stand down as chairman and have handed over the chair to Nicolette Fourie. Nicolette has years of experience managing people, a passion for ceramics and is dedicated to making CSA relevant and successful in this tumultuous world. Nicolette’s CV can be found below. At the committee’s request I will stay on to mentor and guide the new committee as several of the new committee have not served on any CSA committees. Nicolette Fourie

Born in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng 1974 Matriculated 1991 from Riverside High School in Three Rivers, Vereeniging Studied Food Technology in Bloemfontein and worked in the food industry. Changed direction and worked for ABSA in their Life Insurance division then promoted to their Investments division. Transferred to Cape Town worked as a Business Development Manager for their Unit Trust Management Company. The job involved training financial advisors on local and international markets as well improving their knowledge of economics and different investment products. Has a Diploma in Financial Markets and Instruments from the Academy of Financial Markets as well as a certificate from the Association of Unit Trusts


Interest in ceramics began when relocated to Port Elizabeth from Bloemfontein and attended first pottery class 18 years ago with Brenda Davis at Pendragon Pottery. A pivotal moment was attending a Raku workshop with Anton van der Merwe in Hogsback “After 19 years in the financial industry I decided to follow my passion for ceramics full time. The chemistry involved in ceramics is what truly interests me as well as how far I can challenge myself. I am currently attending classes with Alessandro Pappada in Durbanville. My major aim as Chairperson is to promote all CSA Western Cape members work and to show that the Western Cape has world class ceramists. I look forward to meeting our members and seeing their wonderful work.”

NOVEMBER EVENT DETAILS; 1) Clay Museum Durbanville 27 October – 8 December: Ceramic quilts Similar pieces that together look like a quilt. Maybe a collection of say 9 potters making 10 pieces for the cube. Here are a few examples we received to explain the concept.

All items if selected needs to be delivered a week before the exhibition. Please note that all pieces must be exhibition ready, meaning all hooks or stands etc. must be included. No damaged items can be accepted

6) CSA Western Cape 2016 Regional Exhibition Selectors and award judges for this exhibition are Esther Esmyol, curator social History collections at Iziko Museum, Toni Burton director Zizamele Ceramics and Lisa Ringwood potter. Themes for Invitational Exhibition All CSA W Cape members are invited to submit 2 works ( no sets ) for this themed exhibition which forms part of the Regional exhibition. There is no selection process, you self select what you would like to have on the show. Your work however must reflect

one of the two themes chosen for this year’s Invitational exhibition; Please choose one of the themes below for your submissions; The Marine World Or Inspired by Social Media


Sculpture Garden

The sculpture garden first established in 2014 as a feature of the Western Cape Regional Exhibition will again take place this year on the beautiful green square of lawn enclosed by the Cape Dutch style white washed buildings of the Alphen hotel complex. All sculptors and potential sculptors are encouraged to submit proposals for this exhibition. These proposals will be juried, and if required, assistance and advice will be available for those potential exhibitors who may not have worked on this scale before. We look forward to a wide-ranging and varied group of ceramic sculpture for this year’s exhibition. New membership option information. Studio membership. Studio membership allows students of a teaching studio to attend workshops at member prices as well as collectively have one table at the Potters Market. Each studio teacher must submit names of the students that wish to join. The 2016 cost per student is R100 per year. Names and payment's must be organised and submitted by the studio teacher who in turn must be a member of CSA in a personal capacity Potter's markets rules: Students are limited to one table only as a group and are allowed to split the cost of the table between themselves.

We are often contacted by the public with requests for specific ceramic / pottery items e.g. tiles, plates, garden pots etc. Having a data base of member’s products will help us match customer with maker. News about our members The Potter's Gallery turns 25. Congratulations to Corrine de Haas and her team.

From humble beginnings on 1st of July 1991 when this studio opened its doors, we have grown. We are famous today for our Signature White Collection, as well as the contemporary Earth Collection. Today, our custom designs for South Africa's discerning chefs and restaurants form an exciting and large part of our workshop production. Our Terracotta pots can also be seen in some of the countries most beautiful gardens.
