Opening on 18 March is our first exhibition of the year, entitled Line. Do not be put off by the name as it most certainly does not limit you to just drawings. The possibilities for interpreting this theme are vast and varied! Put on your thinking caps and come up with something special.

There are no real limits of quantity or size within reasonable constraints of available space, but it must please be work that has not been shown before. We do reserve the right to selection. There will however, be a hanging fee which will be 10% of the artist’s price for each artwork to a maximum of R100. So if you value the piece at R500 the hanging fee will be R50. This amount is payable on delivery.

It would be appreciated if you would indicate your participation and if you send in images on or before 4 March we might be able to use these for the invitation and any other publicity. All work must be delivered between 12 and 14 March to Artisan Gallery and all work submitted must be ready to hang/display.

We are looking forward to a really exciting and varied exhibition! If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact Ingrid on 031 312 4364 or at artisan.ingrid@gmail.com

Opportunity to order Clay We would like to get an order together from CPS in Cape Town. I know there are a few potters and ceramists who like the Supa Porcelain and black clay so now is your chance. If we can order 1 ton of clay between all of us we will get a 20% discount. If anyone is interested please email Louise Jennings at loujen@telkomsa.net and she will send you the price list. Cut off date for our order is Friday 3rd March 2015. " 2

1)We will spend a good ½ hour discovering what the different shapes are intended for-‐whether we are ‘old’ or ‘new’ potters. That’s when we will be using the poster paint or oxides on hopefully absorbent paper (newsprint). 2) The leather hard tiles are for decorating-‐slips, comb patterns, paper resist, sgraffito and burnishing 3) You can also bring 2 or 3 leatherhard or bisque pots to decorate –if time allows. 4) The bisque tiles: painting with underglaze colours, light, medium and dark colours of your choice-‐you will probably finish them off at home with a glaze 5) I will also demonstrate one way of starting a sculpture-‐or a second way! 6) I will discuss a pot or two.

The Association will sponsor newsprint and poster paint for participating members

Mine/e’s story

C

E

I have been on the pottery scene since the start of the Association-‐APSA as it was known-‐ Association of Potters of Southern Africa-‐ 1972 At the first National meeting in Durban nogal-‐I was quite out of my depth among the well known potters. I could only think the f act that I could speak English was why my region sent me down to represent them. Anyway, I stuck it out and actually love being with fellow potters-‐planning, making the public aware of clay. At a stage Pretoria-‐then called Northern Transvaal (eventually Magalies) had over 300 members-‐not sure of the count now. “ My main interest is actually painting and drawing and teaching. It is wonderful to see how people develop-‐relax,laugh,complain, unburden their ups and downs. Clay has this healing effect-‐and levelling the playing field I have taken part in many Regional and National exhibitions (Its somehow expected from a committee member!) Also did workshops here and there and meeting wonderful people-‐the same interests-‐loves and hates! So on with clay and teaching-‐ginger tea and also red wine during evening classes. Participants are requested to bring: 1. All your brushes –old and new 2. Paper to practice on eg newsprint 3. Poster paint or cheap oxide 4. 3 or 4 leather hard tiles , appro. 20x15cm 5. 3 or 4 bisque tiles same size as above 6. Board to work on 7. Saucer or something to mix on 8. sharp tool e.g porcupine quill 9. small piece of comb 10. 3 coloured slips 11. a few small sponges-‐if we do resist patterns 12. teaspoon for burnishing

Review of one of Mine+e’s Workshops by a Gauteng Member

SCULPTURE WORKSHOP BY MINETTE ZAAIMAN Minette welcomed us and started to show us immediately how to make a round form of leather-‐hard clay. She had filled a nylon stocking with a substance called “vermiculite” of which one can form any shape one likes. She decided to make a round one, draped her slap over it and unceremoniously dropped both items on the floor and “voilà” there was a round form! Back on the table she removed the filled stocking and sculpted a tortoise with the ease as only a very experienced artist can do. She also showed us a mask ,which had been created earlier on by using the same method. Then, Minette started the preparations for the creation of a horse-‐sculpture. First of all she taped two wine bottles together and wrapped them in news paper, at the same time making a paper base. She then placed a bat, with a roughly shaped slap of leather-‐hard clay on the banding wheel, the bottles were placed on top of that and the clay wrapped around them, forming the body of the horse. The base was cut off neatly, scored and attached to the upper form, dipping her fingers in vinegar all the time. By now the bottles could be removed and the finishing of the inside, starting by rolling a coil, shaped at an angle, (tip from a German lady) in order to fit neatly into the seam. Minette made a cut at one end, roughening the edges using a little comb, vinegar to glue, creating the form of a horse’s backside . Same procedure was followed for the back and neck. The head was sculpted separately and attached later, so was the tail. There it was, Minette’s stylized horse! She mentioned how much she loved horses and also told us about this autistic boy and the great understanding between him and his horse, indeed they are special creatures!

Everyone, with great enthusiastic energy, started to make their own creation by using Minette’s method. We saw a chicken, an aloe, a modern form and of course horses. Minette was helping us all, showing how things were done and of-‐course with a big smile on her face. Thank you Minette for giving us an inside to your way of sculpting, the teaching was enjoyed by all.

Olivier Villet

Olivia Villet Biography

Olivia studied Fine Arts at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town. After completing her degree she decided to further her studies with an Honors Degree in Illustration, specializing in children’s books. Part of a local children’s writers and illustrators group, she was advised by Niki Daley (an award winning South African children’s author and illustrator) to send off one of her end of year projects to Bloomsbury Books in the UK. The project in question, initially titled Chopper’s Big Surprise, was fished out of the dreaded slush pile thanks to a painted envelope and published inMorris-Hale 2002 under the Lynette new title of Chester’s Big Surprise. Chester’s Big Surprise went on to win the Best Newcomer award at the Bologna Book Fair pre-publication in April 2000. With Bloomsbury’s book contract in one hand and a suitcase in the other, Olivia decided to take the leap and move over to the UK. Here she Maggie illustrated many books for Matthewsamongst others The Chicken House, Harper Collins and Reader’s Digest USA

In 2010 Olivia returned to South Africa, this time with a husband, two children and the contents of a shipping container. Based in Durban and wanting to join a creative class of some sort, Olivia found herself in Corrie Hook’s studio. Well and truly bitten by the clay bug, clay became as much a part of her creative expression as a pencil. Olivia now divides her time equally between illustration and ceramics and is very excited by the marriage of her two loves. She has a particular interest in mark making and is influenced by both the natural world as well as graphic patterns with a quirky twist. 2014 saw a collaborative range between Mr Price Home and Olivia, with a range of home ware inspired by her ceramic mark making. Olivia’s ceramics are stocked at ZuluLulu in the Natal Midlands.
